Season Review

Team of the Season – Luis Suarez

For all his undoubted talents, Luis Suarez had failed to really flourish as a Fantasy force until Brendan Rodgers rolled up to Merseyside. Arriving at Liverpool midway through the 2010/11 campaign from Dutch outfit Ajax, the Uruguayan had delivered just 15 goals and 11 assists in a season-and-a-half and was resultantly priced at 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) before last term got underway:

While previous boss Kenny Dalglish seemed determined to forge an up-front partnership between Suarez and £35m signing Andy Carroll, Rodgers decided to cut his losses and farmed the big Geordie out to West Ham on loan. Installed as the lone striker in a 4-3-3 system, Suarez thrived from a more possession-based style of play and finally became a serious contender for our three man front lines until the decision to sink his teeth into the arm of Branislav Ivanovic ended his season abruptly.

The Statistics

Initially, Suarez was slow out the blocks as Liverpool struggled with a new change in tactics. By the end of Gameweek 5, the Reds had picked up just two points and found the net on just four occasions; although the Uruguayan had managed to notch twice – at home to City and at Sunderland – faith in his Fantasy potential had already taken a dive, as his FPL price slipped to 9.4 by the time Rodgers’ team rolled up to Carrow Road in Gameweek 6.

Away to Norwich, however, Suarez served up a sensational hat-trick and assist as the Reds ran riot in a 5-2 win. With the maximum FPL bonus points also accrued, the Uruguayan registered a 20 point haul and kicked off a run which produced returns in six of seven appearances –with eight goals, four assists and 10 bonus points picked up over that period, the bandwagon quickly hit top speed as Fantasy managers juggled budgets in order to find him a place alongside Robin Van Persie in their front three.

Even the arrival of Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea in the winter transfer window failed to dent his potential. Suarez was initially shifted to “the hole” as Liverpool trialled a 4-2-3-1 system with the former Chelsea man leading the line but when Rodgers reverted to a 4-3-3, Sturridge found himself reprising his Stamford Bridge role of bench-warmer again.

Then came Gameweek 34. Prior to the home clash with Liverpool, the press mainly focussed on Rafa Benitez’s return to Anfield but by the time the final whistle blew, it was all about Suarez. The biting incident with Ivanovic resulted in a second lengthy ban for the Uruguayan as his uncanny ability to hog the headlines for all the wrong reasons earned him a 10-match ban.

Despite accusations of inconsistency, Suarez managed to deliver attacking points in 19 of his 33 appearances last time out, with eight double figure returns an example of his explosive potential. With 23 goals, 10 assists and 34 bonus points to his name, he finished the season on 212 points – joint third overall with Juan Mata and second top forward behind Van Persie.

The Prospects

With six games of his suspension still left to serve, Suarez may still have a significant effect on how we assess the Fantasy landscape for the season ahead. Crucially, much depends if he’s still at Anfield when the player price lists are revealed in July – with Suarez still in the mix, Fantasy games are likely to afford him a premium price in spite of his remaining ban, whereas if he’s already left, Sturridge would then be seen as the club’s number one forward and be valued accordingly.

It’s believed Suarez has a clause in his contract which forces Liverpool to listen to any bid in excess of £40m and at a press conference in his homeland last week, he made his intentions of engineering a move away from Merseyside clear, citing the British press as key to his decision:

“It is a difficult moment for me. My coach and my colleagues know that they [the media] didn’t treat me well. Because of the paparazzi I could not go in my garden, I could not go to the supermarket. My reason for leaving is not the money. It’s my family and image. I don’t feel comfortable here anymore.”

With the likes of Real Madrid already linked with a move for his services, it may well be that we’ve seen the last of Suarez on these shores. Certainly, if he remains at Anfield, his form over the previous campaign suggests a price tag of around the 12.0 mark in FPL would be on the cards but with Van Persie’s consistency far superior, the Liverpool forward would perhaps struggle to find a place in many squads, given that plenty will also be earmarking Gareth Bale for their midfields.

From a Fantasy perspective, then, the ideal scenario would be for Suarez to exit Anfield after the price lists are rolled out. As mentioned above, such a scenario should see Sturridge handed a more budget friendly price tag – a potential cost in the region of 9.5 would still look strong value for a player who racked up 10 goals, five assists and eight bonus points in just 14 appearances for Rodgers’ side.

Having scored five goals, an assist and five bonus points in four games without Suarez, Sturridge’s exceptional end to the previous campaign is highly encouraging but, according to reports, he may be facing up to four months on the sidelines with an ankle problem sustained in England’s friendly draw with Republic of Ireland last week. With Carroll also expected to depart Merseyside, Sturridge certainly has the potential to become a major player across the Fantasy games next time around but if the early prognosis proves correct, Rodgers will certainly look to revitalise his forward options before entertaining the idea of Suarez departing Anfield.

Sounds like a cracking atmosphere at the Japan - Australia match. Still 0-0 halfway through the second half, Japan dominating but failing to create many clear cut chances.

The German U-21 press conference in Israel this morning told us virtually nothing. The questions really centred around German aspirations for the tournament and explaining why Gündogan, Götze, Kroos, ter Stegen et al. weren't there.

The only possible line-up clue was coach Rainer Adrion's response to the question as to whether there is a clear hierarchy in the team. Adrion said that, despite the recent injuries, a number of "reliable performers had emerged during qualification" who "stand out on the pitch".

So it would seem that he's going to stick with several (sadly unnamed!) key players from qualification. This will disappoint most German observers, who reckon that quite a few of the new additions that Adrion has been forced to bring into the squad due to injuries to Kirchhoff, Jung & Arslan are much better than the players that he'd already got, particularly in defence.

I asked five colleagues, for example, which team they would personally pick from this 23-man squad if they had the choice and everyone agreed on eight starters (only disagreements were goalkeeper, right-back and one defensive midfielder). No-one's team looked anything like Adrion's qualification line-ups though, so there's a sense of gloom about the team's prospects in Israel.

Still, Adrion also said today that "he had nothing against one of the younger players forcing themselves into the foreground", so let's see whether he can go with the form players after all. Tomorrow's press conference may tell us more.

He wasn't really settled in Roma, he should never have gone there really. Part of it appears to have been his own mistake, with not learning italian, but his qualities are beyond doubt for me. I've seen him do incredible things for both Ajax and the national team.

no, did you get to many games? He played less than 20 matches. I did watch him play 'in the flesh' more than 50 times for Ajax though. Just seemed the move didn't work out for him.

Just thinking about a team structure for next season

    4.5 4.0-4.5M (8.5-9M)
    Che 5.0 4.5 4.0 4.0 (23-24M)
    Bale(11-12) Coutinho(8M) 10M 6M 5M
    RVP(13.5) 9M 6M

Looking at a structure similar to this you think?

Looks good. I'll hopefully find a bargain elsewhere that allows me to spend a bit more in defense if needed (maybe on a keeper and/or the £5m defender, although it all depends on pricing obviously!

One thing I would say is that you'll probably end up having 3 or 4 players who you want no matter what (maybe more if we get some really generous pricing for one or two players) and the challenge will be to fit a team around them.

Personally I think next year may see tye return of the budget striker and big mid template.

I don't think I will be going with rvp next season due to budget restrictions and tge fact I think Chelsea and Liverpool will have very solid defences that I will want a piece of.

Something like bent (possibly at fulham), sturridge and maybe lukaku (if on loan somewgere he will start)/odemwingie (at a club that will create chances) might be the way to go

I didn't realise how much he goes up, I mean I watch ligue 1 a lot an when he first arrived everyone was calling him as the new "Sergio Ramos" and he got a lot of media coverage in France. That's the badger, just a quick question: if a team gets 3 bids accepted on gk which do they not keep. Is there an option or is it still the most expensive bid which is voided?

            - If the club exceeds its tokens budget, the most expensive successful bid (in tokens) will be considered void and goes to the club with the next highest bid. If this is unable to settle equal bids from the same team, the bidding order (1st, 2nd and 3rd) in the weekly submission shall determine the preference of each team

            - If the club exceeds its player position limit, the bidding order (1st, 2nd and 3rd) in the weekly submission shall determine the preference of each team

You are unlikely to exceed your 100 token budget in the first round, so it goes down to bidding order. The rules were clarified last night.

I guess it's too late to change the rules but would have been nice if it means they win all 3 knowing they'll have to release on at some stage of the game? It's like a consequence of betting so aggressively.

My understanding is that the most expensive is voided only if by winning all three you exceed your 100 token budget (why you would do this on GKs is beyond me 😀 ).

            Could be totally wrong though...

Great insight PB, so are you confident in your side qualifying?

With the keys players missing and uncertainty over the lineup I get the feeling you feel a bit dubious

Just thought I'd condense the important bits.

    • On Sunday, midfielder Luca Marrone (thigh) started to train with the Azzurrini, and while attacking midfielder Insigne picked up a little knock to the knee, he said on Monday that "the problem is getting better, I will see today and tomorrow, then I will decide on my availability with the coach"

    • The Israel squad is free of injury as Munas Dabbur, Orr Barouch and Edi Gotlib are all over the setbacks that sidelined them for the back end of the domestic season.

    • There are no fresh injury concerns for coach Tor Ole Skullerud since AZ Alkmaar midfielder Markus Henriksen replaced defender Alexander Groven, ruled out with a thigh injury on Monday. Valon Berisha, Joshua King, Håvard Nordtveit and Henriksen are part of the senior squad to face Albania in a FIFA World Cup qualifier on Friday, therefore missing Norway's Group B opener.

    • Coach Rainer Adrion has all 23 players fit and available, although there was a scare during Monday's training session when midfielder Patrick Herrmann received treatment from the medical staff because of a hip problem. "It still hurts, but I will manage," the VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach winger said.

      Nice one.

The Norway quartet are likely to miss the 2nd game aswell as the Albania game is the day before the 21's game against England.

Quite fancy Herrmann the German, if only he was a midfielder
