Fixture Analysis – Rotation Pairs – Aston Villa and West Brom

We continue our fixture rotation articles for the season ahead by rolling out the fifth in the series this morning. Having looked at what’s on offer from West Ham/Southampton, Norwich/Stoke, Crystal Palace/Hull and Newcastle/Sunderland, we make our way to the midlands to mull over the merits of combining Aston Villa with West Brom.

The Fixtures

Similar to all our previously featured pairs, Villa and the Baggies offer up a perfect home/away rotation right across the 38 Gameweeks. Focussing on the first half of the season, the duo would face one of the previous campaign’s top six on seven occasions at home – thus leaving Fantasy managers with a schedule of 12 strong fixtures (SOT, SWA, NEW, SUN, CPL, CAR, AVL, SUN, NOR, HUL, CPL, SWA).

Villa’s fixtures are the main issue here – Paul Lambert’s side are the cause for concern in five of those seven tricky matches, with Liverpool, Man City, Tottenham, Everton and Man United rolling up to Villa Park in Gameweeks 2, 6, 8 9 and 16 respectively. The Baggies, on the other hand, have just a couple of problematic home ties as Arsenal and City arrive at The Hawthorns in Gameweeks 7 and 14 respectively.

For those eyeing up a Villa-West Brom combination, then, a four-way rotation pattern with Stoke and Norwich would solve the problem over those seven Gameweeks – this would hand us (CPL, NOR, ful, WBA, CAR, CAR, SWA) as alternatives. From a three-way perspective, Southampton offer the best fit in five of those seven (SUN, CPL, SWA, FUL, AVL), though Mauricio Pochettino’s side do have trips to United and Newcastle in Gameweeks 8 and 16 also on their agenda.

Over the second half of the season, the Villa/West Brom combination have just three Gameweeks where both side’s fixtures look an issue – Gameweek 22, 24 and 29. This time, West Ham serve up a perfect alternative to fall back on, with home clashes against Newcastle, Swansea and Hull over those respective matches.

Defence

Villa
While the rotation pattern looks promising, Villa’s inability to keep out their opponents remains a real issue. Lambert’s side registered five clean sheets (four at home, one away) by Gameweek 16 then promptly conceded in every league match onwards – 69 goals against was a record better than only relegated Wigan and Reading, with 73 apiece.

Looking ahead to next term, the upside is that we can expect Villa’s defensive options to remain firmly in the budget bracket. Brad Guzan was fourth overall keeper for save points in 2012/13 and a similar situation looks on the cards, with his heroics between the sticks looking crucial for Lambert’s side – a price of 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems likely for the US stopper, with Matthew Lowton also set to come in around the same price. The Villa right-back prospered as the season unfolded and produced a goal and three assists in his last eight appearances – if Lambert prevails with the 4-3-3 system rolled out towards the end of the campaign, Lowton should be afforded plenty chance to bomb forward and lend his weight to the midlanders’ attacks. New boy Antonio Luna could also prosper on the opposite side of the back-four and could offer an alternative, should he settle in quickly after moving from Sevilla earlier this summer.

West Brom
Steve Clarke’s side registered five home clean sheets in 2012/13 but after producing four of those in their first six fixtures at the Hawthorns, managed the feat just once more (Gameweek 17) and were an unreliable option in front of their own fans as the season unfolded. The Baggies managed three clean sheets on their travels – all arriving from Gameweek 26 onwards.

Although Ben Foster’s total of 105 points last time out was just two better than Guzan’s, the Baggies stopper missed eight games through injury – as a result, he’s likely to remain around the 5.0 mark when the player lists are rolled out later this month. Three goals, three assists and eight bonus points makes Gareth McAuley the best route into West Brom’s backline – the centre-half finished the season almost 30 points ahead of any other defensive team-mate. There’s a hope that Billy Jones could remain at last term’s initial 4.5 price – the right-back started just 24 matches and with his side conceding more goals and returning less clean sheets under Clarke than the previous season, Jones may be the best value option should his cost stay still. Craig Dawson could also offer value if he can possibly disrupt McAuley’s partnership with Jonas Olsson.

Attacking Options

The Main Men
There’s no doubt that Christian Benteke is the jewel in the crown for Lambert’s side. With 14 goals in the last 18 Gameweeks of 2012/13, the big Belgian grew into the role of lone striker as the season unfolded and battered many a backline into submission by the time Villa secured their safety. The issue, however, is just how much of a price rise can be anticipated across the Fantasy games – Benteke began last season at 6.5 in FPL but after racking up 19 goals and 166 points overall, anything less than 8.5 would be surprising.

Certainly, if Benteke can carry on from where he left off he may well still provide real value but Fantasy managers could instead be swayed by Gabby Agbonlahor’s form over the last few months of the previous season. Fielded on the left of the front three, he produced attacking returns in seven of his last nine appearances – a real source of consistency which harvested six goals, four assists and 11 bonus points from Gameweek 29 onwards. Alternatively, with Agbonlahor expected to come in around 7.0, Andreas Weimann may provide us with a cheap third forward around 6.0 or less – he looks to have nailed down the role on the right of the front three and chipped in with three goals and a trio of assists in his final 12 fixtures.

In terms of summer arrivals, Aleksandar Tonev could well benefit if Lambert hands him the most advanced central midfield berth behind Benteke in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation and would be one to consider if he comes in around 5.5. Nicklas Helenius, on the other hand, looks likely to be afforded game time from the bench as a deputy for Benteke – the new boy is similar in stature to the Belgian and could step into the breach if Benteke decides to move to pastures new.

For the Baggies, James Morrison offered the only decent midfield option last time out. The Scot initially thrived in “the hole” under Clarke, producing three goals, four assists and seven bonus points in his first 11 appearances but fell away as the season unfolded, though a 12 point haul against United on the final day of the season highlighted his capabilities. Having racked up 133 points last time out, a slight rise to 6.0 to 6.5 is likely, though Morrison’s inconsistency is something of a worry – he produced attacking returns in just 10 of his 35 appearances and managed just three assists between Gameweek 13 and 31. It’s little wonder, then, that Steve Clarke has been linked with the likes of Scott Sinclair, Yossi Benayoun and Salomon Kalou as he looks to bolster his attacking options in midfield.

Up top, Romelu Lukaku’s return to Chelsea gives Clarke a real headache for the season ahead. As mentioned in yesterday’s Window Wish List article, a move for Demba Ba could be on the cards – Clarke’s ties with his former club and close affinity with Jose Mourinho could help, while Ba’s lack of impact at the Bridge, allied with the return of Lukaku and potential acquisition of Edinson Cavani, should force him down the pecking order for the lone forward role. At present, then, we only have Shane Long to consider but that will surely change over the next few weeks as the Baggies boss scours the market in order to build upon last season’s promising eighth place finish. Indeed, Clarke will be hoping his former Chelsea ties stand him in good stead in the summer transfer market – both Nicolas Anelka and Franco Di Santo have also been linked with a possible move to the Hawthorns earlier today.

I voted for Villa because it seems like the players are buying into Lambert's ideas and they looked better towards the end of the season. With the signings already completed and a few more expected, they could really do well next season. If your question was about improving in terms of clean sheets, then i probably would've leaned towards S'oton then Newcastle & Villa

Yep, we'd probably see more goals from Stoke next year (how hard could it be to improve their goal tally from last season really) but i really doubt they'd be as solid in defense, and either way there wont be a cheap option to get into Stoke D with Pieters signing. And RVW seems a bit overhyped to me, i'm not saying he's not going to do well but people are a little too confident that he will.

Really want Hughes to bring in a beaut of an FPL prospect in Midfield. Someone like Hoillet will do nicely. Cheap FPL wise, Knows what he can get out of him and will fall under the radar

Well he's got to be looking at getting some players in so its definitely possible, but i'm keeping my eyes on Adam, he could explode again next year if the team is built around him with an attack-minded team (i'm just hoping Hughes would be a little less cautious and make them offensive)

Yeah I know, but he's on record as saying he thinks his best position is as a holding mid. If it's a choice between Bale or Holtby to play in the hole, it's not really a contest.

A good idea, but Lennon is first choice and the 433 formation is all about promoting width which I imagine would be awkward for Sigurdson's and co. who are natural number 10's that play through the middle. I would love to see AVB make a bid for Nani just for some added squad depth and to bring in some competition for Lennon.

        Paulinho Dembele
        Lennon* Ade* Bale

Possible new signings filling in either role and possible Bale will go onto the right and be inverted if we sign a new LWer. Dembele and Paulinho closing down, pressing and dribbling through, Sandro merking any nuisance that gets through. Expect much more rotation this season too.

Not enough over-the-top-premature-analysis going on for my liking. Someone give me a long post analysing how many captain choices we actually need.

Is only one of Bale or RVP necessary? Is getting both of them reducing the significance of their hidden 'captaincy value' . Why pay over the odds on the basis that they give a strong captaincy option when you already have a strong captaincy option? At the end of the day, based on points alone, these players are terrible value.

I just saw the poll question on the Homepage: 'How to solve the Bale-RVP problem'. The options are:
    A) Opt for Bale.
    B) Opt for RVP
    C) Opt for neither.

I think many others like others would have voted for option D) Wait till the friggin' prices are out.

Yep, thats exactly why i'd be very interested if Liverpool do get him, because that would mean he was guaranteed to play frequently, and he would come in at a low price, and he always stands out when i watch a Barca B game.

Yep, another reason why i'm starting to think its possible. Other than probably being unable to guarantee him game time, i can see Barca having a problem accepted it because Liverpool isn't in the Champions League, they want him to get some experience in Europe (Real Sociedad are after him and it seems like they're winning the race right now)

Yeah he's been linked with us too. Doesn't really make sense. Surely going to Swansea or WBA would make more sense otherwise he might as well play for Barca B again.

It's very doubtful that he's going to play another season for the B team, it's not good for his progress. But i can imagine him doing well at Liverpool if he starts on the left wing, a potential Deulofeu Aspas Sturridge Coutinho front 4 is pretty exciting. However, he's most likely going to Sociedad or Valencia

It is a bit of a fantasy attack but if they sign a defensive midfielder, it's not impossible to see it happen. I'm still a bit surprised a bigger team isn't going for Wanyama yet, he would great at Liver, Arsenal, Chelsea, or United in my opinion

I've been thinking of making a blog for a while but the only issue i have is that i've heard you should only set up a blog after you have a few followers/readers because they rarely become big without an initial following. I was hoping to combine a Youtube account with a blog to give it more of a reach but that seems unlikely now

I think a few of us are getting swamped and confused by the sheer volume of hard work that so many are putting into it this year.

I don't get how Spurs approach matters tbh, they refuse to cash in on Bale, yet whilst they have him do not spend on a top class striker. As was proven with Chelsea last season if you don't have quality up front you will fall short in the PL.

Fairly near the top of those we could actually sign (judging at the end of that season not being captain hindsight). We can't attract the top tier players like Lewandowski, Falcao, Cavani and so it's down to the best of the rest.

Good as that is I wonder if it's maybe a little too 1-dimensional in places. Their attack is going to be all pace. Their midfield, all size. Where's the Plan B in those areas? Like I say, it is very good. Whether they'll even need a plan B is another matter.

Siggy started at £5.0m (or was it £4.5m?) when he joined in Jan 2012 and started the 2012-13 season at £9.0m

Absolutely - moving to Spurs made him likely to score more points (how wrong we all were!). FPL figured that at Spurs he was likely to score points like a £9m player. Didn't matter what his price was before.

Some 2011-12 scores and 2012-13 starting prices:

        Silva: 184 = £10.0
        Dempsey: 209 = £9.5
        Mata: 162 = £9.5
        Bale: 195 = £9.2
        RVP: 269 = £13.0

Bale scored 249 this time round. I can't see less than £12m myself.

It all depends on RVP as well. If he and RVP add up to 24-25m which they no doubt will then I'm going to have to think long and hard about which one to get. I just think two 12m or over players is a little steep at the start.

Back when Ronaldo was 14m you had to get him, penalty taking goal and assist machine with bonus playing for one of the very best sides in the Prem League. I certainly wouldn't pay 13-14m for Bale. No penalties...team that is prone to poor runs of form and a track record of 2,2,2,2,2 followed by mega runs is not in the same league as Ronaldo.

I remember having him 2 seasons ago right after he came back from injury. I needed a striker and i saw he got a goal after playing the 2nd half v West Ham so I got him in.

He promptly started his monster run and must have gained me about 50-60 points in my ML as a monster differential

Then he went and had a DGW and every fecker had him

But that's not all there is to it. Bale had 10 blanks, RVP 8. If anything the fact that RVP's were spaced out meant they were impossible to predict, while Bale's hauls were pretty easy to predict – especially in his run of:

                    11, 15, 15, 10, 8, 2, 13, -, 13, 12, 11

Have you got any more of those pics...the FPL site now down so can't see them.

I guess it seemed like more blanks as a Bale owner in the first half of the season. 13 gameweeks without a good score over the season is a good record, but they seemed to be always the week I captained him. 🙂

It doesn't matter if Bale is on pens as the referees association has stated that it is against their code of conduct to give Spurs any penalties. Only clubs from Manchester or with a Russian Oligarch for an owner are allowed pens.

I'm not a Spurs fan or anything but they got zero pens last year and Bale picked up three yellow cards for dives when they were clearly (after watching replays) not dives.

I think AVB passive way of talking about the referees after games clearly doesn't work and shows the reason referees have to be bullied and harassed to give correct decisions.

I'm not sure he's capable of playing 38 games a season, he usually picks up the odd hamstring injury along the way. Or a suspension for too many dives.

I think 11 or 12 might be reasonable, but I agree with Jonty.

Paying 14 for Ronaldo 4 years ago could be justified as you had a nailed on mid scoring 20 goals a season for 5 points each who also took pens and free-kicks who would beast it under the old bonus system. In all honesty given his high number of shots Ronaldo would probably still be a beast under this BP system.

IF Bale has pens then it becomes a different matter, but right now RvP trumps Bale IMO

IF Oscar plays regularly AND he continues to improve his EPL performance as he was towards the end then he will be by far the best value. But that's two big 'ifs'

I'm with the majority here - I think Hazard will be the guy to own.

I doubt Moses and Benayoun will be in the mix.

Oscar could be the best value if he steps up his game (like in CL displays), but Hazard or Mata will be the ones to have.

Schurrle could turn into great value if he starts performing well and regularly since he will be the cheaper from that lot.

This brief analysis of the latest drivel has been stolen from http://www.nufc.com:

Another day, another uncontrolled outburst from JFK:

"Every top club in the land has got one (a director of football). We haven’t – that’s the difference. The manager can’t do everything.

"I’m probably the only football manager to be a director of football. I don’t know any other ex-managers who have (Dennis Wise? David Pleat? Kenny Dalglish?)

"I’ve been a manager for 35 years. I’ve been Manager of the Year. I’ve won every award there is in football as a player (excluding mere trinkets like a domestic league championship or any individual awards...)

"I think all those qualities put me head and shoulders above every other director of football.

"Some directors of football have never played the game - i’m lending my experience as a manager for all those years - 10 years at Wimbledon+, two years at Nottingham Forest#, two years winning promotion at Luton and, of course, almost two years at Newcastle*.

+ in reality, 7 years and 2 months
      # in reality, 10 months
      *in reality, 137 days

"I would still be there had it (the heart attack) not occurred.”

He seems to have very little skill in handling the media. Most directors of football never speak to the media, they don't need to, they just get on with it. It's almost like he's having to justify why he has the job. If he truly was good at it, he'd just get on with it surely and let Pardew deal with the media.

Plus nothing he's saying is being filtered by PR - like it or not, surely Newcastle would have a press team who would normally try to control what comes out of the club? Has JK just outlawed that? Seems that way.

Until very recently there was a very strict set of rules in place regarding what was said to the media - if anything it may have been too strict. Whether the rules have been thrown away and Kinnear has permission to act this way I don't know, seems like he has carte blanche at present though. I'm sad 🙁
