Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Goalkeepers

More than likely you’ll have heard the news by now but for those unaware, the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game is up and running. Having taken time to soak up this season’s current player list, we roll out the first in a series of articles focussing on each position – not surprisingly, we start with the goalkeepers.

The Budget Bracket

Southampton’s Artur Boruc comes in at just 4.5 – the most expensive of his side’s three keepers. The Pole looked to have established himself as number one under Mauricio Pochettino last term, though, and is bound to receive plenty investment, with a schedule that sees him entertain Sunderland, West Ham, Palace, Swansea, Fulham, Hull and Villa in his first seven at St Mary’s.

Simon Mignolet’s departure from Sunderland leaves new boy Vito Mannone and Kieran Westwood to battle it out for the number one jersey – both have been priced at 4.5, though the opening schedule is somewhat tricky for the Black Cats, with plenty of saves, rather than clean sheets, perhaps anticipated. Everton new boy Joel Robles is also been handed a budget price tag but while Roberto Martinez has admitted the Spaniard could push Tim Howard all the way for a starting role, too many question marks hang over his game time at the moment to make the former Latics man a viable proposition.

Promoted trio David Marshall, Julian Speroni and Allan McGregor all come in at 4.5. As mentioned in a previous article, the latter two offer up a home/away rotation pairing right across the season, with a decent opening eight Gameweeks (TOT, NOR, SUN, CAR, SWA, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL). Faith in both Hull and Palace’s abilities to register clean sheets is understandably low but for those Fantasy managers looking to spend an absolute minimum on their keepers, this pairing is the cheapest option on offer with a guarantee of regular game time.

Marshall has some tricky opening fixtures but not only does he rotate with Swansea’s Michel Vorm, the Cardiff keeper also offers decent back-up for those willing to take a punt on Mignolet nailing down the Liverpool keeper’s jersey.

The Mid-Price

Jussi Jaaskelainenand Asmir Begovic – last season’s standout budget options – have both been handed a significant price hike in light of their heroics between the sticks. The duo will now set you back 5.5 apiece compared to 4.5 a year ago; a move that will severely dent their appeal. As always, Jaaskelainen will offer save points aplenty and, with (CAR, new, STO, sot, EVE, hul) could barely ask for a better opening schedule – while he offers a strong rotation option with Boruc over the 38 Gameweeks, there are cheaper routes into Sam Allardyce’s backline that may sway Fantasy managers. Begovic has a dire first few matches, with only a home clash against Palace likely to appeal in the opening five, and with Stoke set for a more attacking approach under Mark Hughes, many may choose to hold fire on investing in the Potters backline options.

Both Simon Mignolet and Pepe Reina will set you back 5.5. The Belgian’s arrival at Anfield suggests the latter’s days are numbered and if the former Sunderland man can nail down a regular role, he’d offer the cheapest route into a defence that registered 16 clean sheets under Brendan Rodgers last time round. With only one tricky fixture in the first nine, Liverpool look primed for investment from the offset.

Everton’s Tim Howard has been priced at 5.5 after the Toffees shipped just 41 goals in David Moyes’ final season in charge. With Roberto Martinez now at the helm, question marks remain over the Merseysiders’ ability to keep out opponents if, as expected, they roll out a 3-4-3 – bearing in mind that Seamus Coleman is cheaper and should be fielded as an out of position prospect on the right of midfield, Howard’s appeal is significantly reduced.

Midlands duo Ben Foster and Brad Guzan both cost 5.0 and offer a home/away rotation pairing with West Brom and Villa over the season. Guzan’s saves are crucial to how we assess his potential – despite producing just five clean sheets in 2012/13, the US stopper still finished as Villa’s top scoring defensive option and looks a viable alternative to the similarly priced Matt Lowton, though there are cheaper alternatives to consider at Villa if you fancy them to improve defensively. Foster is 0.5 cheaper than Gareth McAuley for the Baggies and could well outscore the centre-half this time round if he can stay injury-free.

While Jaaskelainen and Begovic have been priced out of many managers’ reach, the 2011/12 star duo of Michel Vorm and Tim Krul have slipped in FPL’s estimations after registering 92 and 75 points apiece in the campaign gone by. The pair are now down to 5.0 and while you’re unlikely to find a cheaper alternative in the Swansea set-up (unless 4.5 Neil Taylor can nail down left-back at Ben Davies’ expense), there are a couple of 4.5 price options in Newcastle’s defence which may see Krul bypassed. With home games against West Ham, Fulham and Hull, in addition to a trip to Villa by Gameweek 5, the Tynesiders – opening day trip to City aside – offer a decent opening schedule.

John Ruddy’s appeal has been hit by a cost of 5.0. The Norwich stopper made just 15 appearances last season and was expected to be a cut-price option – although he rotates home/away with Stoke, a partnership with Begovic is surely too expensive at 10.5. With Michael Turner priced at 4.5 in the heart of the Canaries backline, our plans for Ruddy may be shelved. Similarly, Fulham’s new keeper Maarten Stekelenburg could be overlooked by fellow new-boy Fernando Amorebieta – at 5.0 and 4.5 respectively, the more budget-friendly centre-half may prove a more popular option for those eyeing up the Cottagers as a source of clean sheets.

Arsenal seems very favourably priced at the back this year, with Wojciech Szczesny (5.5) potentially offering real value over the season ahead. If the Pole can retain the number one jersey, he offers a solid route into a backline that conceded just 37 goals last time out – the second most resilient defence in the Premier League. Arsene Wenger’s side face just one of last term’s top six in the first nine Gameweeks and have been handed the platform to sprint out of the blocks.

The Top Bracket

Just four keepers have been afforded a price tag of 6.0 or more this season. Surprisingly, Hugo Lloris’ name is amongst that quartet, despite the fact that Tottenham managed nine clean sheets in Andre Villas-Boas’ first term in charge at the Lane – less than Norwich, for example. While there’s no doubt the Frenchman is now fully established as Spurs’ first-choice stopper, his appeal is somewhat diminished by options elsewhere in the Tottenham backline; with the likes of Younes Kaboul at 5.0 and Benoit Assou-Ekotto also coming in under 6.0, Lloris will surely struggle to garner any real attention.

United’s David De Gea will also set you back 6.0. The champions’ first few fixtures, which pits them against Chelsea, Liverpool and City in the opening five, could be a lot kinder on David Moyes’ side and if the likes of Jonny Evans (5.5) can nail down a regular role in the new regime, De Gea looks an expensive commodity many will be more than happy to do without. New City manager Manuel Pellegrini’s promise to bring a more attacking style of play to the Etihad suggests 6.5 priced Joe Hart could struggle to mirror the resilience that has seen him produce 18. 17 and 18 clean sheets in the previous three campaigns under the more cautious Roberto Mancini. It remains to be seen whether Pellegrini will utilise rotation at the back to the same extent as his predecessor but if he settles on a regular back-four domestically, the fact that every City defender bar Vincent Kompany is cheaper than Hart is likely to play a part in Fantasy managers’ thinking as we look to save on budget to begin with.

Finally, Chelsea’s Petr Cech looks a nailed-on option under the returning Jose Mourinho. Aside from the similarly priced Ashley Cole, there remains plenty of uncertainty over the Blues’ likely back-four for the season ahead, with Cech offering a security of starts that boosts his clean sheet prospects – there are cheaper options in Mourinho’s defence, though, with 6.0 priced Cesar Azpilicueta’s runs down the flank offering real attacking potential if he can possibly cement the right-back berth.

Give it to me straight. Is there any way to fit RVP, Bale and Aguero in the same team without making the rest of the squad look like primary school players.

Lambert seems to be priced at a mere 7.5M, purely because he finished last season at 7.2M. That was only because he'd started out at 6.0M. If he'd started at 8.0 say, then he would have finished at 9.2M, so FPL shouldn't be looking at finishing prices in an absolute sense like this. Lambert is underpriced as everything Saints do seems to through him. Cisse should never be priced higher than Lambert based off of last season.

    Bale, RVP, or both?

Ok since RVP and Bale come at such a premium this year, I have seen multiple ways of integrating them into a team, but three main ways. I have seen hardly any teams not featuring either. It helps me to use price templates to pick a template team which is cash-effective in al three lines and then tinker from there with specific players, and hopefully this clarifies some of the ideas people have been having.

*The examples are not definitive players, just give you idea of what a team with such a template may look like.

    1) Bale & RVP

Before the prices were released earlier today, these two players would have been the first two players on the team sheet, alas, they were given such hefty price tags that this situation was made a struggle. This is the template I've come up with to fit both of them in.

    GK: 2 cheaps (4.5/4.5 -- 5.0 if you've got spare cash)
DEF: 5 cheaps (4.0-5.0, since RVP and Bale are so expensive this frees up a bit more cash)
    MID: BALE, 1 high-range [8.0-10.0], 2 mid-range [6.0-7.5], 1 cheap [4.5/5.0]
FWD: RVP, 1 high-range [7.0-9.5], 1 cheap [4.5-6.5, Anelka is proving popular atm]
    eg: http://imgur.com/7dQR5xo

    2) Bale & no RVP

This is the template I've seen the most thus far and for good reason since Bale is cheaper than RVP and tends to be more explosive in some games. Since the midfield seems to be more flexible this year I chose this particular template, plus with no RVP and a lack of attacking threat in forwards this year more money may need to be spent in the midfield, but I noted a possible change at the bottom.

    GK: 2 cheaps (4.5/4.5 -- 5.0 if you've got spare cash)
DEF: 4 cheap [4.0/4.5 use a rotation plan], 1 high-range [5.5-6.5 (Baines and Vert are too expensive for me this year)]
    MID: BALE, 2 high-range [8.0-10.0], 1 mid-range [6.0-7.5], 1 cheap [4.5/5.0]
FWD: Either 2 high-range [7.0-9.5] and a cheap [4.5-6.5] OR Aguero (only decent really highly priced striker imo), 1 high-range [7.0-9.5] and a cheap [4.5-6.5]
*If you wanted one more high-range defender, you could easily drop a high-range midfielder to a mid-range and then upgrade a cheap defender
    eg: http://imgur.com/Gijhw72

    3) RVP & no Bale

I haven't seen many of these to be honest, but could work quite well with the right players. Also if Bale leaves then this could be what people resort to. I found that this template offers more defensively, but less attacking wise than the others but is still not awful going forward.

GK: 2 cheaps [4.5/4.5 (5.0 if you've got spare cash)]
    DEF: 3 cheaps [4.0/4.5 use a rotation plan], 2 high-range [5.5-6.5]
    MID: 2 high-range [8.0-10.0], 2 mid-range [6.0-7.5], and a cheap [4.5/5.0]
FWD: RVP, 1 high range [7.0-9.5], and a cheap [4.5-6.5]
    eg: http://imgur.com/MrukDBJ

Hope this helps you as much as it did me because writing it out help put my ideas on paper. The reason I put 2 cheap goalies on all of them was personal preference, but that can easily be changed. Happy Tinkering!

I tried putting it in one large post but it said that my post was waiting for a review before being posted, presumably because it's too large, so instead I posted it in smaller, bitesized chunks in order for it to post.

Besides, my posts are more thought provoking than the mindless RMT's that people keep putting up when they are going to change things numerous times anyway as there is more transfer activity to happen that will affect things for a start.

On the opening day of the prices being released, my comments are way more appropriate than a load of pointless and boring RMT's, no?

I have no problem with that but do realise that constant posting on the same subject is not too dissimilar to a flurry of RMT's but with the added irritation of it looking like constant ranting.

I think the better alternative was your original intention which was to keep it to one post. Its the sort of post which could earn a sticky so it would most certainly be preferable. I don't know why it got caught by the filter but if there is any risk-ay words in there then that might be why.

It may be a similar subject but with different reasoning each time, and so far no one has really countered what I am saying very well.

I am shocked that no one is worried about how easy it is to afford all these Walcott's and Hazards, it almost feels like we have a late season team value of 108.4M, only it is the start of the season and we have 100.0M.

Failings like Dawson for 5.0M, the cheap Liverpool keepers etc allowing cheap but decent defensive coverage, and a whole bunch of underpriced midfielders and strikers, are going to leave us with template teams from the get-go, a bit like what last season was like for the final two thirds of the season.

I don't think it is easy to have all the players I'd like at all! Getting RVP and Bale in together and still having a decent side is tough.

I've replied to your point on Dawson (who I don't think is remotely nailed-on) etc. as have others.

I guess we'll all have to play catch-up to your team filled with superstars.

Actually, yes, if you go for RVP it is a bit tougher, but if you don't have RVP then you can put together a solid side easily.

Having no RVP is fine if Rooney stays at Man U and plays up-front where Moyes has said he would like to play him.

If Rooney stays, RVP is irrelevant this year. If Rooney goes, then RVP may still be irrelevant anyway due to the large price gap RVP has opened out over the field..

Bale could end up getting transferred out of the Prem as well.

Wow, I don't agree with any of that at all but that's the beauty of the game I guess... it's all about individual opinions. The prices are varied enough to allow for an endless number of combinations and Bale and RVP's prices (deliberately) make the game interesting.

Looking at how all of the mid-price teams have a cheaper alternative in their defence, a Mignolet + bench fodder goalie combo might be worth it at the start of the season.

Will Mignolet start straight away or will Rodgers allow Reina to lose his spot first? Consider the Friedel/Lloris situation last year.

Absolutely. In fact that is a key determining factor as to whether I invest in Mignolet for GW1. Reina has to go first.

There is a lot of value to be had in the Southampton team. Does that and the fact they have great fixtures tempt people to triple up with the likes of Boruc, Clyne, JRod/Lambert?

Somehow tripling up on Southampton just sounds wrong. I've always had somewhat of an irrational rule whereby I don't tripple up on any side unless its a DGW or the team is in crazy hot form.

Yes, too much of a bandwagon here. But then, you can't blame us if the players of an improving team having super fixtures and being the rotation darlings gets priced so cheap.

Nope. Stick to the plan and ignore, by the time january comes around i will have built up team value and then look to bring one or perhaps both in. The likes of haz/wally/studge/aguero are all capable captaincy options and i cant see rvp and bale justifying those prices ahead of the aforementioned players, maybe bale.

      I'm thinking about it.
      RvP is too expensive, period.
As for Bale, there is an argument that he tends to start the season slowly, though that is a rather weak argument for not bringing him in, especially given Tottenham's early fixtures. The thing that makes me question whether Bale is worth the 12.0 is that getting, say, Silva instead frees up a lot of cash to upgrade elsewhere.
Tottenham's favourable fixtures will probably convince me to get Bale in the end, but I'll be agonizing about this for the next few weeks.

I am thinking/hoping Bale will take a couple of months to warm up as he has done in recent times. He had favourable fixtures early last season and produced a few blanks which had a lot of people on wildcard switching him to santi after he killed liverpool at anfield.

If you're looking for a good palace midfielder, I would recommend either Thomas at 4.5 or Bolasie at 5.0. Bolasie can cause real problems and can see him racking up a lot of points, I'm not as sure about Thomas' performance, but he'll be a regular since we just got rid of Moritz and Zaha, leaving him in Zaha's wing spot.

sorry matt, i read and enjoyed your post but didnt reply. i'm going for bale, i just cant cant see the points to price for rvp being worth it at the start of the season when your budget is more constrained. that and uniteds fairly tough fixtures, the moyes factor and i think bale will score similarly to rvp for 2mil less.

oh no worries about the lack of replies, it was more about me thinking while typing tbh. I'm edgin gtowards the same thought, but I think I've managed a decent team with both in, might post it in a bit

haha yeah just looking for a good striker to be honest - not too sure about Lukaku, don't think he is good enough to play a whole season at a team like Chelsea just yet but maybe in a couple of seasons

Not good enough because he can't score against other EPL teams? Not sure I understand what you are saying.

mids and forwards are far from complete, however don't see this back 7 changing too much before the season gets underway:

    Foster (Boruc)

    Mertesacker Coleman Turner Clyne Chester

That looks to be the right amount of money to spend on the back 7

Want to see mire evidence on the Coleman front

    boruc, foster
    zabaleta, coleman, turner, shaw, chester
    bale, hazard, mirallas, benarfa, thomas
    aguero, sturridge, carroll

    IF chelsea have a DGW1:
    zabaleta -> Azpi
    bale -> Mata

    what do you guys think???
