Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Budget Forwards

We roll out the eighth article in our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List this morning. Having previously published articles on Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders, we then looked at Budget Midfielders, Mid-Price Midfielders and Premium Midfielders. Up next, then, we turn our attentions to the men up front, focussing on players no more than 6.0:

Up to 5.5 Mark

Cardiff new boy Andreas Cornelius is likely to earn plenty game time in his debut season for the Bluebirds. “The Danish Tank” racked up 18 goals in 32 appearances for FC Copenhagen in 2012/13 but with just one full season of professional football behind him, there are concerns he may take time to adapt. Malky Mackay’s penchant for a target man within a lone striker system should ensure the 5.5 priced Cornelius plenty starts, while the likes of Fraizer Campbell (also 5.5) is more likely to earn game time off the bench when the Welsh club need to alter their approach and switch to two up front later on in games. Craig Bellamy is similarly priced and classified as a midfielder – he also has a share of corner and free-kicks but a role on the flank somewhat limits his appeal; the Welshman’s propensity for picking up injuries is also an issue, with just 33 appearances last time out. Cornelius looks the best bet of this trio, then, though a tricky start to the season may deter many.

With top scorer Glenn Murray sidelined for months due to a cruciate ligament injury, Crystal Palace new boy Dwight Gayle looks set to lead the line in Ian Holloway’s 4-2-3-1 formation. Coming in at 5.0, the former Peterborough forward looks in the driving seat to start the season for Palace – as mentioned in the recent Scout Report, Holloway has high expectations for a player who has cost a club record £4.5m. Free agent Carlton Cole is also being linked with a move to Selhurst Park but given the outlay on Gayle, he’d surely be ahead of the former West Ham man in the pecking order.

Palace’s home/away rotation with Hull could bring Danny Graham into consideration as a partner for Gayle. The Tigers on loan forward may have struggled last time out but he did, nonetheless, score 12 times in 36 appearances a couple of seasons ago for Swansea – at 5.5, he may still offer decent value and seems to have leapt ahead of Sone Aluko (5.0) in the pecking order. Alternatively, the likes of Robert Koren, Ahmed Elmohamady and Robbie Brady are cheaper in the Hull midfield at 5.0 apiece and offer an alternative rotation partner for Gayle. Similarly, pairing Graham with Palace midfielder Jerome Thomas (4.5) would also set you back a combined 10.0 and offers a schedule of (NOR, SUN. CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL) between Gameweeks 2-8.

Everton’s Victor Anichebe comes in 5.5 but with Arouna Kone added to the ranks and Nikica Jelavic also to consider, the Nigerian is likely to struggle for regular game time under new boss Roberto Martinez. Granted, Anichebe is versatile enough to play on the right though with Kevin Mirallas expected to get the nod, his minutes look far from guaranteed this time out. Hugo Rodallega also comes in at 5.5 and has impressed in pre-season but the Colombian remains behind Dimitar Berbatov and Bryan Ruiz for the forward roles – given that Ruiz is just 0.5 more expensive and offers the assurance of starts, Rodallega – like Anichebe – is likely to depend on game time off the bench.

Indeed, there’s a real shortage of forward options in the sub 6.0 bracket. Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi and Norwich’s Luciano Becchio may be cheap at 5.0 apiece but look like no more than bench fodder for their respective clubs, despite the former scoring in each of the Magpies last two matches. The arrival of Mark Hughes may promote Kenwyne Jones or Cameron Jerome (both 5.0) in the pecking order but with Peter Crouch looking likely to get the nod, Hughes is expected to go shopping for a more natural goalscorer to partner Crouch in his attempt to bring a more attacking brand of football to the Britannia.

Nicolas Anelka, on the other hand, looks to have a better Fantasy potential than most budget forwards – his versatility could see the Frenchman fielded through the middle or on the right as Steve Clarke prepares for life without Romelu Lukaku at the Hawthorns. At 5.5, Anelka – who notched twice in the Baggies’ last friendly – is also cheaper than the likes of midfielder James Morrison (6.0) and has Southampton, Swansea and Sunderland at home in the first five. Bearing in mind West Brom rotate with Aston Villa all season, he could offer a home/away partnership with Aleksandar Tonev for those eying up Paul Lambert’s new signing – at 5.0 in midfield, Tonev paired with Anelka would set you back 10.5, for those confident the Bulgarian will nail down a starting berth under Paul Lambert. Markus Rosenberg is even cheaper at 5.0 for the Baggies and notched in the club’s first two pre-season friendlies but is expected to move further down the pecking order when Clarke adds to his squad over the next few weeks.

Ricardo Vaz Te will be hoping Andy Carroll remains on the sidelines with a heel problem as the season gets underway. The former is typically fielded wide right by Sam Allardyce but looks the current favourite to be handed the lone forward role if Carroll fails to recover – with home games against Cardiff and Stoke and a trip to Newcastle in the first three, Vaz Te, at 5.5, may prove a decent short-term punt until the big Geordie regains full fitness.

The 6.0 Mark

For a fraction more budget, though, Fantasy managers are afforded greater security by a number of regulars. Andreas Weimann looks key to Villa’s prospects in the season ahead and racked up seven goals, four assists and 13 bonus points in his breakthrough year at the midlands outfit. Fielded on the right of a front three, the young Austrian offers the most budget-friendly route into Paul Lambert’s forward line- with Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and City in the first six, many may steer well clear, though Weimann may appeal for those on the hunt for a cheap striker in light of Villa’s double Gameweek 1.

Bryan Ruiz has been handed a 6.0 price tag after producing four goals and 10 assists in 2012/13. The Costa Rican has already scored in each of Fulham’s three pre-season games but his withdrawn role in “the hole”, allied with Dimitar Berbatov’s kind pricing and spot-kick duties, may see him struggle to convince investors of jumping on board. Four eye-catching fixtures between Gameweek 4-8 (WBA, CAR, STO, cpl) look particularly prosperous for the Cottagers, with Ruiz’s creativity likely to benefit.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino transformed Jay Rodriguez’s Fantasy potential in the latter half of last season. Having struggled to produce for previous boss Nigel Adkins, the former Burnley man proved himself to be more or less a match for Rickie Lambert under Pochettino and with game time looking secure, he’s already up and running in pre-season, scoring three times in two appearances. Lambert’s spot-kicks and set-piece duties, allied with his more advanced role and 7.5 price tag, is likely to sway many but Rodriguez’s much-improved form could turn out to be better value if his displays under the Argentine continue to flourish.

Peter Crouch will be hoping Mark Hughes’ arrival at Stoke can bolster his attacking potential. With 130 and 128 points accrued over the past couple of season, Crouch’s returns haven’t been too unimpressive – a drop in price, allied with the installation of a managers determined to go on the offensive, may subsequently see Crouch offer decent value in the season ahead. With a better quality delivery from the flanks, the six foot seven Potters forward may yet prove an overlooked differential for our three man frontlines as Stoke look to improve upon last term’s dire 34-goal haul under Tony Pulis. The fact that Stoke failed to register a single shot on target in their first match under Hughes earlier this week, however, suggests they are still clearly adjusting to his new approach.

    Whats the best option?

    A) Rotate two 4.5 goalkeepers, currently on Boruc and Mannone
    B) A 5.0 gk and a 4.0 who most likely wont play
    C) a 4.5 nailed on keeper, a 4.0 who wont play and spend the remaining .5 to strengthen elsewhere

A non-playing 4.0 GK isn't a good plan for the season as there will be gameweeks you'll need him for

I'll roll the dice and take my chances on a randomly cancelled game. Otherwise if I see the off week coming, switch to another 4.5 keeper.

If it goes the same way as last year with only half the teams playing in one gameweek you'll have other priorities than just subbing you goalie though..

      My goalkeeping headache last season:

Went with Federici and Kelvin Davies.

Davies got injured, replaced him with Ruddy.

      Ruddy got injured.

      Federici came out of favour.

I'd play it safe - not all keepers will play 38 games.

Anyone used "Bony and Clyne" as their team-name yet?

I had a stroke of genius 2 or 3 seasons ago with Cesc, Drogs & Rock n Roll, and it's been a lucky team name for me so I'm reluctant to change it, but neither has played in the league for a while now!

        Missed. 🙂

I actually think Boruc could be a really decent option to play every week. SOT looked increasingly steady at the back post Poco, and they're strengthening pretty well. Like the way they try possession football, limits oppo attacks/chances - a la SWA.

If I really need the extra £1m, would consider Boruc over my current Chesney pick, keeping Lewis (CAR) on bench.

That's my thinking with their improved defense. Also, I tried rotating cheap keepers last season and failed miserably. Most of my shutouts sat on the bench. I'd rather just throw a guy out there and take the good with the bad.

Rotation for home games has worked in the past, but it didn't last season, so don't necessarily rule it out as a strategy. Vorm/Krul was pretty good 2 years back, but last season Bego Juicy stole the show pretty much regardless for H/A.

Also worth allowing yourself freedom to switch as season moves on and new info becomes available, such as a £4m shock starter doing well, or Migs and his defs can't buy a CS for whatever reason.

I er towards an early Chesney/Merte double Arse because Wenger has a good record of prepping his 'boys' (ahem!) in pre-season and they often start solidly with decent CS potential.

            Merely my view.

Looks like lots of people are choosing to field three Chelsea players for the DGW.
Many of these teams feature the like of Luiz and Ivan.
Two things that put me off in this strategy:
    1) You will have to find ways to get rid of at least two of your Chelsea players by GW3. And I don't like the compulsion to ditch some particular players before I even know the actual lineups and form of PL teams, as with so many Chelsea I cannot let myself choose to ditch those who have underperformed or failed to feature in the first and second GW. I will have to eliminate the Chelsea players. I don't like this lack of choice.
    2) Chelsea defenders. I'm going to play two Chelsea players in DGW - Lukaku and Hazard, whom I consider fairly safe to show up in more than 1 x 90 min. The defenders offer no such security. And because they are defenders plus my reservations in 1), I choose to do without. Instead, I prefer to go with a powerful defensive pair of Mertesacker and Johnson, who are supposed to stay longer in my team.
I just hope my attacking Chelsea players will do enough job for me. And no transfer headache before GWs 2 and 3.
    Thank you for your attention.

Just a feeling I have based on seeing how Lukaku is performing in the preseason, seeing the comments of how Mourinho may like him, seeing Torres feature in the Spain match. Plus I prefer two attacking players. But you're right, I cannot guarantee Lukaku will have greater chances, it's the impression I have.

My opinion on Bale. Real Madrid are the biggest club in the world. Players want to play at as high a level as possible. Spurs are a bucket team who will sign no one worth a toss. Careers are short, injurys happen if they did would Real be there tomorrow? Why hang about Spurs another year? The time is right, Bale is gone.

I agree the quotes from Marca sound like total BS but I can imagine him getting those thoughts across to Levy when they have met. You can't blame Bale for wanting to try and do something really special while his stock is so high all he needs to do is look at Rooney to see you need to time your move well as in a couple of years you might find no one wants you any more.

Is it possible for them to lose that 'biggest club in the world' tag or is that just permanent because of their history? I mean a club that hasn't won the European cup in a very long time, hasn't even made the final?

What the biggest or one of the biggest? Not sure on the exact financing of some of these recently mega rich clubs these days. Even Real's financing is a bit murky. Don't the Government just write off their loans!?! 🙂

Definitely. I just wondered if there was a stage whereby they couldn't be considered 'the biggest club in the world' any longer. Would 20 years without winning a European Cup do it?

Of course in reality it's a mix of loads of factors and of course Real Madrid are a massive club

This is the equivalent of you turning over your paycheck to a 97 year old man you don't know, because he has more 'history' than you.

Wish people would stop using 'history' to excuse years of failing.

The counterargument to that is if he stays at Spurs he could become a club legend. Grass isn't always greener etc... Real could prove not to be a step up, after all La Liga is not as greater stage as the PL.

He should show show some loyalty and stay at Spurs to help attract bigger signings. If Spurs were to be successful and win a trophy/break top 3 while he was there then he would have done something "really special." Would be remembered far longer too.

Saints fan speaking. He isn't worth a punt. Yes he scored a hat trick. Was it against any kind of quality? No. We scored 8. Even Luke Shaw scored and he's a left back.

We've had half a year of Pochettino and Guly didn't figure. He won't play and you'll get 0 points.

wanted to include someone from City, but no idea about Pellegrini's plans. Lots of options. and thanks for Garrido tip, i will try to change him.

Thoughts on RVP is that, if you dont start with him, and if he starts on a hotstreak(which is certain), the price hike will be enough to take him beyond the reach.
but if we start with him, even if he fails, swapping with aguero will be a good choice.
    Yes?

I've decided no RVP until Gw3.

I can't have all these Chelsea dgw players and RVP, I also think its crucial it have a Man City forward so Robin will make way for first couple of games before I bring him in I offload the Chelsea expense...

          Erm, not sure.

Surely the new manager will want to play his 2 new boys he play 20m plus for Jovetic already expressed desire to play behind main forward or on the left. Only one place Negredo and that uptop.

          So, could we have a...
          ------ Negredo -----
          Jovetic ------ aguero ?

Don't ask me where Navas and silva feature 😆

Exactly my plan, City player (Aguero) will be so useful first few weeks at least, I had RVP pre-DGW announcement but now its just impossible to have 3 Chelsea (gonna say its almost essential) with RVP without making the rest of the team average

Yeah but it should be manageable to get rid without even taking a hit.

1 out for GW2, another 1 out for GW 3 and then you only have one in the squad with a blank. So at that point just play your 5th mid (if its Thomas he has sunderland at home, good fixture) or 4 at the back

How is that certain? Tough fixtures and a new defensive minded manager. When will you panic and sell him for Aguero? After one blank week? When he drops 0.1m? 0.5m?

moyes isn't like a defensive manager. he plays safe. rvp is fixture proof.

He starts at 14.0m - I really cannot see a rapid rise from there. He'd have to score shed loads almost every week. That value deducted from the your team's allowance can do serious damage elsewhere - even if you have factored it in beforehand.

CS's are usually high in GW1 as everyone is tentatively trying not to lose their first game. So the easy route could be a defencive double up.

Personally I want Hazard and Lukaku atm.

the way i read those quotes is it was 2007 lampard (when mourinho left chelsea and lampard played every single game, league cup, international) vs today's lampard.
so no actual difference between last couple of years and this.

Here goes, final team before I give up, please RMT, would be much appreciated

    Mignolet (Davis)

Cole / Dawson / Collins (Garrido / Turner)

Hazard / Walcott / Bale / Sessegnon (Britton)

    Sturridge / Anelka / Lukaku

After GW1 I will take a 4 point hit to transfer Cole down to a 5 and Lukaku down to Lambert
This leaves me with 2.5 / 3 million to play with after GW2 when this season's Michu will be starting to show.

What do you guys reckon about it?
