Rate My Team – Under The Hood Preview Movie

Grab the popcorn, it’s Saturday night at the movies. We conclude our Rate My Team preview set with an epic 14-minute, stat filled video outlining just how “Professor” Chris Atkinson’s statistical model works.

Admittedly, this is one for the hardcore number freaks but, even so, we hope this offers some insight into the workings behind the Projections and the Rate My Team tool and the effort we put in to maintain it.

If you missed parts one and two of this series, you can catch them here and here.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you would have seen in our first movie, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Any other Americans disappointed Dempsey is leaving England?

Thought it was helping legitimize American football interests to have our good players excelling in Europe's best leagues, but maybe he wasn't good enough for Spurs? I suspect this isn't quite the case for some reason.

Of course he is good enough. Spurs just wasn't a great fit for him and he wasn't able to play his preferred role and be the main attacking threat like he was at Fulham.

I'm surprised he left to be honest, he was getting on a bit for Tottenham but he still would have been good in a top 10 team

As a Spurs fan I'm sad he's going, scored some vital goals and had a fantastic attitude in the squad. Unfortunately I just don't think AVB rated him and its clear he is rebuilding Spurs to make the team his own.

He was certainly good enough. Spurs have 17 MF players to choose from in FPL. Just not getting the game time, and its a WC year so may e too risky for him to stay.

      A real shame though.

Probably expecting too much but i'd liked to have seen him at Villa. We are badly missing a defender of his mould and experience. Would have been a good fit for the player and club

Read something yesterday that the Cardiff CB pairing may be Turner at LCB and Caulker at RCB with the Captain Hudson relegated to the bench as that gives them better balance (not to mention them being younger, stronger and faster).

It's noticeable that Caulker's first start was in replacement of Hudson and paired with Turner so maybe there is no smoke without fire?

Would give 2 x £4.0 options if it turns out that way.

Thoughts from those with some CC insight please.

Maybe I'm just over-analyzing and losing my mind in the process, but isn't it possible that Cech is the safest Chelsea captain option for the DGW?

Lots of discussion on here about whether to have RVP or not. I think it boils down to 2 opposing arguments:

    1. We don't know how Utd will shape up under Moyes and therefore should not take the risk on a 14m player.

    2. RVP will be the top-scoring player in the game and the sooner you have him, preferably at the outset, the better.

I feel there's no middle ground. Short of WCing early, which is viable but shouldn't be planned IMO, it would be a bad idea to plan all the transfers needed to get RVP in during the early running. Plans like that never come to fruition - there's always an emergent must-have player. So it comes down to either getting him now, or not. Back to the drawing board 🙂

      3. Owning RVP and bale or that matter makes the game thoroughly uninteresting and we should challenge ourselves to do better without even if they are essential

I think you're absolutely right but I have been following the reports of Ronaldo to United very closely over the last month and believe there is a real possibility of this transfer actually happening. That might put the cat amongst the pigeons...

True, going to run with him now?

I decided I would as its easier to get rid of him and be a rich oil prince or try get him in / use a wild card early. Though many seem to be using early WC anyway thanks to the DGW

Interesting points, however your main point about not planning to get RVP in because of bandwagons is faulty IMO. This is because its probably too early to tell who the 'must have' players are after only 2/3 GW's.

There are never "must have" players. In any given game week, Bale or Van Persie could score a hat trick of own goals and get a red card in the 59th minute.

This last paragraph makes good sense to me. Pre-planned transfers, especially this early in the season, are very liable to be scuppered by injuries, the emergence of new prospects and bandwagons.

Steer clear. Apart from an occasional penalty he has little FPL value. Classic example of a player much more valuable IRL than in FPL.

I was strongly considering, as way to save 2.5-3 by not going Walcott/Cazorla, then realised his days of prolific FPL scoring were left in Everton. Still the main man/key man, but too deep for my liking and a guy like Giroud is just not going to win you many pens.

Best options at 7.0 imo are:

      Nolan
      Sigurdsson

This will be my last RMT... I need sleep!

    Boruc (Mannone)
Mertesacker Collins Coleman (Chester and Brayford)
    Walcott Hazard Coutinho Miralles (Thomas)
    RvP Lukaku JRod

Thinking bringing Bony in for Lukaku after DGW. Would love to squeeze Soldado in there but I'd have to cut 2.5m from the mids.

Bit worried about the GK... But they seem to rotate ok.

    What do you think?

B v persie lukaku giroud as forwards.

TBH I don't think it matters. What's important is to choose a playing formation, either 3-4-3 or 3-5-2, and select players based on that formation. One approach is to choose cheap bench players first - whether you need a cheap FWD will be determined by the formation - and then see who you can afford.

I think most people will go for 3-4-3, but 3-5-2 is fine too.

With regard to your selections above, all are good picks, so I think it comes down to a question of taste how you distribute the funds.

Quick note for those intending to downgrade Hazard after the DGW but still wanting Chelsea coverage.

Of the teams still currently in the Premier League apart from Aston Villa (12) Frank Lampard has scored most goals against Everton, Fulham and Spurs (9 against each).

Guess who Chelsea's GW 4-6 opponents are? 🙂

Not really. RVP, Dzeko, Lukaku look good although I do have some very slight concerns over the game time of Dzeko and Lukaku. I guess we'll know more after the first couple of GW's.
