The Burning Question – Is Dzeko’s Bandwagon More Boselli than Michu?

Pre-season friendlies can be a double-edged sword for Fantasy managers. A couple of good performances over the summer can lend their way to the most unlikely bandwagons as we seek out the in-form protagonists ahead of the campaign’s kick-off.

We’ve been here before. Even experienced Fantasy managers were fooled by former Wigan man Mauro Boselli – the Argentine produced the goods in back-to-back pre-seasons only to fall flat on his face when the real action ensued. On the other side of the coin, there’s someone like Michu, who racked up the goals for Swansea last summer and hit the ground running from Gameweek 1.

As we cast an eye over City’s summer results, Edin Dzeko’s four-goal exploits have turned a few heads. With home games against Newcastle and Hull, allied with a trip to Cardiff in the first three fixtures, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have an enticing opening schedule before the first international break comes along. Kindly priced across the Fantasy games, at just 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Dzeko has been pencilled into many a squad as we brace ourselves for Saturday’s big kick-off. As the Bosnian’s bandwagon edges towards 12% ownership (more than any City midfielder or attacker) we turn to our contributors for some opinions.

Mark says…
Let’s look at the facts. Dzeko has started six of City’s seven pre-season matches, including last weekend’s defeat to Arsenal. Over that spell, he’s repaid the faith shown by Pellegrini by notching four goals. Unlike Roberto Mancini, the Chilean has rewarded Dzeko for his scoring rate with regular starts and has taken time to single the Bosnian out for praise. So, despite a wealth of attacking options, including a new £48m strike duo of Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo, we can surely expect Dzeko to get the nod when Newcastle visit the Etihad next weekend.

Now consider this. Dzeko was given just 16 league starts by Mancini. Despite this, he notched 14 goals and, significantly, whilst on the pitch, either scored or assisted 40% of City’s goals. In contrast, David Silva was involved in just 24%.

Hands up – I’m a Dzeko fan – while I acknowledge his sometimes awkward style, his propensity to switch off and go missing for lengthy spells, I’ve always been willing to back his instinct to find the net. Give Dzeko minutes and he’ll score goals. He proved it last season. He’s proved over the summer. He’ll likely remain a rotation risk all season long but if Pellegrini gives him starts in the first three Gameweeks, I think Dzeko could be a huge bandwagon going into the international break with the wildcards fluttering.

Disclaimer: I backed Boselli.

Applebonkers says…
Dzeko seems quite a simple formula. Dzeko + minutes = points. He’s never been pretty but he gets the job done with goals and, to a lesser extent, assists, which essentially is all that matters for us, if not fully for real life managers. With Aguero having fallen behind fitness and match sharpness and Silva being used more on the left than in the hole in pre-season it seems like just Dzeko, Negredo and Jovetic for two spots, in which case I think one spot is Dzeko’s to lose early doors.

Reverting back to the formula, 7.5 therefore looks like a tantalising price, especially given the costs of his attacking team-mates. Once Aguero is up to full speed it surely complicates matters more as I also believe Jovetic is the perfect flexible striker for Pellegrini.

I like Dzeko as an individual punt. I don’t, however, if one of several risks being taken. The Gameweek 3 absence of Chelsea and Villa assets means our squads will already be stretched, narrowing the margin for error. In a week where we’ll need our starters to be reliable and bench options to step up, Dzeko’s uncertainty of game time may well spell trouble.

Andy says…
I’ll be honest – all of the Edin Dzeko talk really confuses me. It’s not to say that I think he’ll be comparable to Mauro Boselli – I’d like it on record that I do think he’s a decent, competent striker – but it’s more that I’m somewhat agog that he seems to have been elevated to a status I don’t think he deserves.

I just don’t quite believe that he will be utilised as frequently as is mooted, and either the manager is simply trying to boost the morale one of his squad members or has got his words in a mix. When you’ve got Alvaro Negredo, Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic in direct competition for places, I just don’t see Dzeko standing up to the challenge.

If I’m wrong and Manuel Pellegrini really is going to rely on the Bosnian to lead his attack then the 7.5 striker jumps out as a Fantasy option to be reckoned with. This Fantasy manager, however, is going to need to see the proof before he’s willing to sample the goal pudding.

Jonty says…
With 30 goals in 76 appearances for City and 66 in 111 appearances at his previous side VfL Wolfsburg, Dzeko is certainly more Michu than Boselli on paper. With Aguero and new boys Jovetic and Negredo vying for game time, plus an abundance of attacking talent in midfield, Dzeko looks set for another season of rotation.

Manuel Pellegrini has come out publicly in declaring Dzeko as his “main striker” but this statement may have been lost in translation. Did he really mean that Dzeko was his number one choice, or just praising his talents as centre forward to keep him on side? Those words are far more likely to keep Dzeko warm and happy when he sits on the bench than if Pellegrini had said the truth, ‘he’s a pretty good striker, but they are ten a penny at our club.’

In terms of minutes he is certainly likely to be more Boselli than the Swansea man: Michu is as “nailed on” as they come. But does the uncertainty of Dzeko’s starts matter all that much? He has already proved that as a sub he can still damage opposition defences. He started just 16 Premier League matches last season yet still managed a respectable 14 goals. It took Southampton’s Rickie Lambert 35 starts to get just one more than Dzeko last season. It’s worth noting that both are priced at 7.5 this time around.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

2 questions, if you'd care to help it would be greatly appreciated

1.Is Brady (Hull) still great value? Will he be playing further from goal with the acquisitions of Graham and Sagbo,

    2. in the Arsenal backline, why are so many on Mertesacker (3 goals in 4854 minutes) over perhaps the other 3 viable options of Sagna/Gibbs/Koscielny
Kos (7163 Minutes, 6 goals, 2 assists) (2 goals 1 assist last season in 1675)
Gibbs (Last season produced 5 assists in just 2103 minutes)
Sagna, (from 2009 to 2011 scored once, but assisted 8 times)

    Thanks for any feedback
(I currently have Brady and Koscielny in my team)

Mert is probs the most nailed on, when Verm comes back.
Gibbs will be rotated with Monreal
Sagna is a good shout but i feel Wenger is losing patience and could be looking at buying a new rb

      1. I don't personally think that he was ever great value myself and so the wrong guy to comment.
      2. "So many" refer to the masses and Merts scored 47 points more last season and this is all that the average casual looks at.

A few risks in there, but nothing wrong with a good old punt. Could go either way.

hi folks. raised this on the last page but i don't think many will see it, so....

IF, hypothetically speaking, chelsea really ripped through GW1 and a few of their players were highly successful, would those players gain or drop in price? i'm not really experienced enough in observing value to work this one out. are the majority of players aware that chelsea don't play GW3, or is it a small minority and the rest focus solely on form? i feel like this is a crucial question, with a lot of people planning to downgrade their chelsea players in order to accommodate RVP for GW4.

    thoughts?

my thoughts exactly. in which case, worries about RVP going up to 14.1 or even higher could be offset by the likelihood of DGW players also rising in price. or is that faulty logic?

No you're right. I would bet on DGW players prices possibly rising if they do anything. A lot of casuals simply look at the points totals and choose by that.

Like i said on the last page....

I think RvP is much more likely to go up 0.1 than Chelski is to go down 0.1. Also, to compensate for that you'd need a Chelski player to rise 0.2 to effectively counter an RvP 0.1 rise. With the urgency of getting RvP in if he rips it up GW1, I highly doubt that a single Chelski player will rise 0.2 before RvP will rise from 0.1 to 0.2....

So therefore, it's like having to have a 100.5m budget at the beginning of the season if you don't get RvP straight after GW1 in my opinion.

Unless he does awful, gets injured, or subbed off after 10 minutes, or starts on the bench. Not likely.

i don't think he'll do awful but i can't see him doing amazing either with such difficult fixtures. like i've said, maybe 5 points per game (average) for the first three would be a likely return. with the vast amount of ownership he already has, and the problems the majority will have with bringing him in early, i don't think he's likely to rise too much?

Would you like to place a wager on that one? I'm going with get RvP before GW2, before he rises 14.1 or forever hold your peace. 🙂

Especially when I plan for that and Bale to stay and I'll move both of them in by GW3 or GW4 and be down from 3 chels to 1 🙂

The Dzeko debate is an interesting one.

The problem i have with him are

    1) Mancini was no idiot , he was a sub for a reason and that was when city only had Tevez and Aguero

    2) Pell not bought Jot and Negredo to sit on the bench , and it hard to see Negredo and Dzeko playing at the same time

    3) I can see Dzeko starting GW1 , as a reward for a good pre season , and many of the others on international duty.
However he no good as a one week punt because it not possible to remove him , there are too many chelsea players to remove first, And if he starts GW1 i am fairly sure the new boys would be given home debuts in GW3 just when you needed Dzeko

To sum up , if there was no DGW and no blank gameweek then i would of got him instead of Lulaku for a one week punt. However the double and blank make it too risky imo even if he does start GW1

Great post, if you are taking ONE punt then I can understand it but with many already taking punts on the likes of Lukaku/Anelka/any chelsea player that isn't Hazard then I think to go with two of these will cause people big problems. Much like picking RVP, he will score and have good week and be worth a pick but all in all I don't like the tactics of going with him.

Last season he was competing with an unhappy Tevez and Balotelli, this season he has some serious quality in the likes of Jovetic (the most underrated player so far I think) and Negredo who Pele knows well as well as what should be the leader of the line Aguero who missed so much of last season.

I think Brunt is the West Brom captain, so if fit he should play--may be injured tho

gotta think Van Wolfswinkel will play, have him mostly since the opening fixtures look fairly favorable

Aguero is probably the best choice from Man City

Collins a solid player, but they're saying he might be injured

And yes, pretty sure Brunt is the captain?

I think Aguero could be a good choice, but there's always that risk of him dropping behind Negredo or Dzeko or put out wide on the right?

I think for 11.0m I'd rather have the risk/reward from Dzeko...and also Dzeko has slightly better chance of not pulling 5 minute cameos with the increased number of strikers...

Exactly , and so early in the season you make so much money out of them that it dosent really matter if the player bought in dosent score big

Some of the clever folk on ere did analysis on this which indicated exactly what you're saying. Hits early in the season can be very useful in getting the right team, so that you don't miss the boat on certain players. Gotta be sensible about them tho obviously (this is usually where I fail...)

I'll go with Cole, Hazard and Lukaku although I don't believe he's nailed for both games, but the other two are, especially cole. I'm surprised people hasn't talked about cole a whole lot on this site when it's clear as day he is the most likely chelsea def. to play both games for the DGW

all good options except mata due to fitness. ivanovic probably the best combination of gametime and points potential in my opinion. cole is more nailed on but with less potential, terry is less nailed on but with roughly as much points potential if not slightly more.

lukaku is a risk but i think leaving him out might be even more of a risk. hazard is of course a must.

Bellamy? oh god. Go with Kim if you want a Cardiff mid.

I'd personally rotate Foster Boruc because it's just a better rotation. If you have Migs, you can have a 4.0...although I think the rotation is better, why waste an xfer on a GK....

Sturridge is a risk for GW1 i think. Why not Giroud? He's in excellent form at the moment...

Ivan and Lukaku out. RVP and Coleman in. GW1.

Save xfer GW2, if Bale stays, Mirallas > 5.5 and Coutinho > Bale in GW3

Well last year, I finished 856th in the world and I only had van persie only 3 times on my team and this year, I plan to not have him at all, so it is possible to do well without him. I had guys like Michu, Benteke, Lambert, Mata, Bale from the very start last year and in the long run, they made up for not having van persie. Even when I added guys later on like walcott who scored a hattrick in the first game I had him against newcastle. So my point, you don't need Van persie

Hey! Good to see you on here -- thanks for the Parma spot. Also looking forward to the draft leagues come September. Looking like a good group so far.

As for your question, I am waiting to see what happens with Rooney, Bale and Suarez as well. Will likely WC if they are all staying and flourishing, since I'd want at least three of the four sooner rather than later, but will be open to RVP for a hit if needed.

    Forget it actually

    I'll just go with Thomas

Sure, he is a doubt but who said anything about starting my 5th mind in the first 2 weeks?

Should be back by week 3, or even before that...

Final selection headache! Any help will be much appreciated!

    A) Walcott and Sturridge
    B) Giroud and Coutinho +1m for ravel to Kim and 4.5m def to 5m def

    Which and why?

The mid will be in my team for gw1, the striker for gw2, if that makes a difference

    Thanks, Anthony,

        A. Because I think its explosive, and I know Giroud is in good form but I just think Sturridge is a bit more settled. And I'd play both every week.

      B. Giroud is on fire. Coutinho is nailed on. Kim is nailed on and in an advanced role.

Sturridge is a doubt. Walcott took a knock. And there's a big difference from 4.5m to 5.0m defs...

      for example....

      Alcaraz or Coleman (EVE)
      Yanga Mbiwa or Debuchy (NEW)
      Naughton or Dawson/Kaboul (TOT)

      Just to name a few.

Not worried about Sturridge after today, or Walcott after hearing reports from yesterday. Misread the original post tho re. using rve or kim and I reckon you're right Old Glory - B.

      A) is the stronger pairing but I would say the added value to the rest of your team makes B worthwhile.

    My team at the moment:

    Vorm
    Ivanovic Toure M.Turner
    Hazard Ramires Wallcott Silva
    Soldado Giroud Anelka

On the bench : Mannone , Brayford, Yanga-Mbiwa, Kagawa

What do you think about my team?

Kagawa is too expensive to bench, any moyes does t seem to fancy him. Downgrade to Kim, upgrade Anelka.

This isn't accurate. Kagawa has been resting/struggling with fitness after a break following the Confederations Cup. I'd be highly surprised if he doesn't figure strongly into Moyes plans, especially if United doesn't add another attacking mid.

Well depends on what your plans are really.

I'd like to see what you plan for the first couple xfers, as you're realistically not going to play 4-5-1 during lukaku and tekkers blank...with Anelka your lone striker.

Eureka! Weimann will be my cheap attacker -- though a bit pricey for that spot, he is secure and oozing GW1 potential. I can bench Mirallas for GW1 instead of transfering him in for a Chelsea mid, thus saving one of my hits in GW3.

Things are taking shape...10 of 15 spots are filled now.
    Boruc
    JE
    Oscar Hazard Coutinho Theo (Mirallas)
    Weimann Lukaku Benteke

Time to go shopping for a defense.

away games against arsenal and chelsea arguably have less combined potential than a single home game against any bottom half club, IMO. even for benteke.
