The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Wednesday

Another strong Villa display. Another Christian Benteke goal. This time, however, Paul Lambert’s blossoming side fall short as Branislav Ivanovic is allowed to stay on the pitch to nod home Chelsea’s winner.

The Game Changer

Arguably, referee Kevin Friend was the most influential individual on show. There’s also a strong case for Christian Benteke who struck his third goal of the season and has now scored nine league goals in his last 10 outings. Branislav Ivanovic’s goal proved the difference, however, and rewarded those who invested their double Gameweek funds whilst underlining the goal threat previously on show in Saturday’s win over Hull.

Friend’s decision to brandish a yellow for Ivanovic’s lashing out on Benteke was undoubtedly the turning point. It allowed the Serbian to demonstrate his ability at set-plays as, just minutes later, he headed home Frank Lampard’s dead ball delivery.

Ivanovic was the only Chelsea defender denied Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points from the Hull victory. Despite escaping a red card and being left for dead by Gabby Agbonlahor for Villa’s goal, Ivanovic looks set to earn bonus to make him Chelsea’s top scoring double Gameweek asset.

The Underused

While Benteke will earn huge investment following another goal and effective display, those who are struggling to stretch their funds to the Belgian will be eyeing the impact of Gabby Agbonlahor. So impressive during Villa’s run at the end of last season, he has started the new campaign in stunning form and yet claims less than 2% FPL ownership.

Instrumental in the victory at the Emirates, it was his turn of pace and delivery that set up Benteke for his equaliser. Agbonlahor has scored five goals and earned four assists in his last ten league outings.

The Selection Poser

It’s hardly a poser. Jose Mourinho’s decision to start with Demba Ba and leave Romelu Lukaku shackled on the bench disappointed Fantasy managers and Chelsea fans alike. His introduction for the ineffective Ba on 65 minutes provided little consolation. Lukaku played fewer minutes than any other Chelsea striker in the double Gameweek, having looked primed to start the campaign following a convincing pre-season.

Mourinho’s reluctance to hand Lukaku a central role on the Premier League stage is a puzzle. Perhaps he will start at Old Trafford on Monday and face a defence which he terrified on the final day of last season at the Hawthorns. It’s unlikely to make a difference – Lukaku’s ownership and price look set to slide.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Soldering Iron if you can afford?

      Or Sturridge.

      Lambert's fixtures also look tasty.

As a Dzeko owner, I'm excited about the prospects (and what Pellegrini has been saying) but worried at the same time. It feels very much like the Lukaku situation could happen again at any time.....and I've already moved Lukaku out.

Hope Dzeko starts until I can at least make that change.

Lambertinho then IMO. Especially for fixtures.

But Dzeko could upset you away at Cardiff.

Dont know if it means anything but everytime I owned Lambert last season, he did absolutely nothing for me, yet had a fantastic season? I dont think he ever scored a goal when I had him. And I had him a couple of times for good periods. Just my bad luck I think! Whenever I watched him aswell he looked awful and never got into the box, always lingered outside, never active, never dangerous. Always on the periphery of the game.

          Toss a coin. Your decision.

at 7.5m, and with a good record off the bench, I'd say Dzeko is a risk worth taking, 7.5m but a few bench appearances is a good compromise for a City striker in my eyes!

One angle is that if Jose is going to give Torres and Ba a chance to nail down the spot who better to do it against than two of the (arguably) weakest defences in the league. Perhaps he didn't need Lukaku to prove himself like the other two. And with both failing, Lukaku may be edging towards having his name on the team sheet every week.

A friend theorizes that Mourinho wanted to give Torres and Ba a chance to fail - so that he can say (perhaps to upper management who still love Torres) 'look, I tried Torres and Ba and they failed - got to go to Lukaku'.

I've played mine. The plan was start the season with a team focused on GW1, then wildcard immediately, jumping on any price rises (admittedly best done during the internationals, but I've done this before and it didn't yield that much, so only a secondary factor this time and not that important to me) and during this week put together a longer term team.

With Rooney there no. Without Rooney there, still probably no! At 7.5m it could be cheeky, but I think it'll end in disappointment, and with Dzeko amongst others available at that price, not to mention RVP stealing all of Welbeck's points, I wouldn't do it myself.

Discussed earlier......depends. I punted on him for DGW.....Watched him last season and he likes to play "in the hole." I think El Hamdi would have to do something wrong for him to gets starts, then maybe get nailed on.

To be honest, I can't see a way of making a Sturridge, Soldado, Benteke front 3 much better tbh, 3 main strikers from teams likely to score goals.

The same money gets you RVP, RvW, JRod by comparison.

Obviously an RVP, Aguero, Soldado front 3 has its merits, but on the down side its £7m more expensive.

Sturridge, Soldado, Benteke is the way forward (until injury strikes)

the only caveat is the armband. which one can you trust? We've seen how important that decision is over and over. I am worried that without rvp it will be loads of guess work each week. Further he is owned by 46%. Not owning him will hurt more often than not!

This is my front three. My only worry would be in the case of upgrading. It's a lot easier to downgrade RVP or Aguero (and later Suarez) than it is to find the money to get one of them in.

I already had Chester. I bet that felt crappy having to move on a defender simply because he was sent off?

Out of the three promoted sides. I fancy Hull to stop up. They will be tighter at the back though, Steve Bruce init. 3-5-2 is a balanced formation but slightly defensive/counter attacking. Saying that Cardiff are pretty good at the back. We'll see....this is the premier league.

Good moves, you've moved out the two players i've moved out, but we've gone for different options - I've brought in Coleman and Sturridge (started with 0.5 in the bank)

I did like the look of Hull a little more than I expected to, so Chester might be a decent shout. I've got Soldado already, think he's a great player.

Just weighing up the De Bruyne to Nolan/HBA transfer for another -4 now. If Kosc hadn't been sent off then I'd have been perfectly happy doing a -4 for the other two.

If price is no issue, it's between Walcott and Hazard. Walcott may see more time injured, Hazard more time rotated. Walcott is in a team that may look for more goals than clean sheets, Hazard in a team that, if Mourinho follows on from what he did before, will prioritise solid 1-0s over high scoring games. It may come down to who else is in your team, but I think Walcott may just edge it. I reckon he has more goal threat about him, and whilst Hazard may look better on the pitch, that doesn't translate into fantasy points. But it'll be close.

I feel like there should be a "Confessions Booth" on here somewhere where you get to confess your transfer sins.
I reckon there are lots of us out there that need a hail- mary or two to wash away our knee-jerks and a few kind words from our fellow scouts to reassure us that hits aren't always sinful

My first confession is as follows:

Forgive me scouts, for I have sinned
I have made my first 12 point hit ever
I had to coz I had Ravel Morrison, you see
He simply had to become Barkley coz I couldn't wait for the rise and the fall
I also shipped out Terry for Coleman
    Lukaku for Lambert
    ...and...
    ...Ward out for Shaw

I did it to save my wildcard and I have RVP
My team looks good now but I can't afford Benteke
I promise never to do this again

I feel like I need to even though it will cost me 4 transfer points. His price is going up, and I don't see it going down even with an off-week.

If you can afford him I say do it
Check out my confession above - I dream of a simple 4 pointer
4 pointers make you early money and it all adds up by xmas
Sell him next week then get him back for gw4 if you want
      you'll probably make .1 anyway

The qualifying matches this week for Europe count in the Sun game, right? Shouldn't the points have been added by now?

Aye they do count. Not sure how long the Sun game takes to update them, but they definitely count.

Nah, the RVP love is being saved up for the GW4 Palace clash.

At which point I will gnash my teeth and wail at not having him and realised I have no way to get him without WCing 😉

I think people who have him will be laughing on their way to the bank. However, I'd say the majority on here have gone without him.
