Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Kompany Worry for City

Vincent Kompany could be out for a month for City. Christian Benteke may be set to turn out for Belgium a week today. Ashley Cole is ruled out for England with a rib problem, Alan Pardew praises Hatem Ben Arfa’s response after being dropped, whilst Aly Cissokho signals his return from injury with a 90-minute run out for Liverpool’s Under 21 side:

Kompany Poised for Another Spell on Sidelines

Belgium boss Marc Wilmots has indicated Vincent Kompany is expected to be sidelined for up to four weeks with a thigh problem. City revealed earlier in the day that scans had confirmed Kompany picked up the problem in Saturday’s win over Everton but while the club were uncertain of any timescale, Wilmots was a little more forthcoming in yesterday’s press conference for the national side.

The Scout Says: Having already seen his skipper spend time on the sidelines with a groin injury this term, Manuel Pellegrini is likely to court caution with Kompany’s latest injury setback. Ironically, City have managed just one clean sheet with the Belgian in the XI, compared to two in three games without him, though there’s no doubt that, as the schedule picks up on all fronts, his likely loss is a bitter blow. If, as expected, he is out for around a month, Kompany would miss the next three leagues games (whm, che, NOR), affording Joleon Lescott the chance to slot in alongside Matija Nastasic once again, with Martin Demichelis still also recovering from injury.

Cole Amongst the First Withdrawals

In addition to Kompany’s Belgium absence, the usual raft of international injuries are underway, with Chelsea’s Ashley Cole amongst the names involved. The left-back has withdrawn from England’s squad to face Montenegro on Friday with the rib problem sustained against Norwich on Sunday, whilst Republic of Ireland pair Jon Walters and Kieran Westwood have also called off with groin and shoulder problems respectively. Arsenal’s Tomas Rosicky has also been excused from the Czech Republic Squad for “health reasons” just days after returning to action for the Gunners.

The Scout Says: As always, seasoned Fantasy managers will look upon these withdrawals with a degree of scepticism. Cole was subbed off during Chelsea’s win at Norwich for tactical reasons – Jose Mourinho revealed post-match he was unaware of any problem prior to subbing off the England player. Walters has, however, failed to finish either of Stoke’s last two matches with the problem and could be one to monitor, whilst any possible absence for Westwood could bring Vito Mannone into contention at Sunderland.

Benteke Could Return for Gameweek 8

Reports indicate the Villa forward could be set for a rapid return to action over the international fortnight. Having joined up with the Belgium squad, Benteke has been ruled out of Friday’s game against Croatia but may be called into action for the following Tuesday’s showdown with Wales if required. Villa boss Paul Lambert has also aired his views on the situation:

“I trust Christian to do the right thing. He is probably stuck in the middle right now. But I’ve had a good chat with him and he will know himself what is the right thing for him to do. I trust him. But I won’t be happy if he plays for Belgium and comes back to me injured. I know he wants to play and get back into it as quickly as possible but he hasn’t been back on the training ground yet since picking up the injury. It’s only when he starts to kick a ball again that the test will come and he will know himself if it feels okay and whether he is ready to play.”

The Scout Says: A quick return to action for Benteke would give Fantasy managers plenty to ponder once the domestic program resumes. Having scored four times in his first four games, the big Belgian limped off early in the Gameweek 5 win at Norwich and his absence has seen over 640,000 Fantasy managers switch their affections to similarly priced options such as Olivier Giroud and Daniel Sturridge. Prior to his hip injury, though, Benteke was the second most popular frontline option behind Robin Van Persie but the lay of the land has changed rapidly – with Romelu Lukaku and Luis Suarez also earning significant numbers of new owners over the last couple of weeks, Benteke is now down to just 8.9 in FPL, with an ownership sitting at 12%. Providing he proves his fitness, the big Belgian will surely barge his way back onto Fantasy radars ahead of a schedule that hands Villa three home games in the next four.

Fellaini Facing Wrist Surgery

Another of the Premier League’s Belgian contingent, the United summer signing could also be set to feature in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers just days after David Moyes left him out of Saturday’s win at Sunderland with a wrist injury. Reports suggest that Fellaini will still require surgery on damaged ligaments in “the near future”, however, with a possible three-week timescale expected.

The Scout Says: Despite his lack of impact this term, Fellaini still sits in over 7% of FPL teams as a result of last season’s exploits at Everton. His only start for the champions was back in Gameweek 5, when United were picked apart by neighbours City at the Etihad – Moyes is likely to retain faith in Tom Cleverley alongside Michael Carrick in the meantime but in terms of Fantasy interest in United’s midfield, it’s been all about Adnan Januzaj – over 91,000 FPL managers have drafted the 4.7 priced youngster in after his double against the Black Cats. Given that Carrick is the second most popular, with just over 300 new owners, highlights the faith we have in Fellaini and co right now, despite a run of three home games in the next four.

Pardew Praises Ben Arfa Attitude

Alan Pardew has revealed he was pleased with Hatem Ben Arfa’s attitude after dropping the Frenchman from the starting XI for the weekend trip to Cardiff. The Newcastle manager went on to insist he will continue to use a squad rotation policy after chopping and changing a number of times already this season:

“It was a great day in terms of the team. The players who got left out accepted it and contributed to the win. It was nice to see Hatem come on. He’s growing up. I was pleased with his reaction this week. I asked Hatem to do a defensive job. I don’t think I’ve ever asked him to do that before. He saw it through, so it was good news… It’s important that everybody’s pulling and trying to achieve the victory. Jonas Gutierrez came off the bench. We had not seen him for a while, but he did a great little job for us.”

The Scout Says: While Pardew has publicly made a point of singling out Ben Arfa, it seems the temperamental Frenchman could struggle to make an immediate return to the fold. His half-time withdrawal against Everton in Gameweek 6 saw a much-improved Magpies score twice without reply, whilst the 2-1 win against the Bluebirds highlighted the side’s greater all-round work ethic without Ben Arfa in the ranks. Indeed, with the fit-again Gutierrez now offering an option on the left of the front three, Pardew even has the option of moving the versatile Remy to the opposite flank – lessening the likelihood of an immediate return for Ben Arfa, in spite of his undoubted talents.

Cissokho Returns to Action

Liverpool’s on-loan left-back made a successful return from injury last night as the Reds Under 21s swept aside Tottenham 5-0.

The Scout Says: Sidelined since limping off just 21 minutes into his debut back in Gameweek 2, Cissokho’s comeback will have Jose Enrique’s Fantasy owners anxiously looking over their shoulders. The Spaniard has started six of the Reds’ seven league games so far and has managed over 100 minutes more than any other Liverpool defender as a result of a lack of competition but Cissokho’s availability could finally allow us to ascertain just which of the two is likely to be Brendan Rodgers’ first-choice left-back. Indeed, Rodgers’ recent switch to 3-4-1-2 makes the situation all the more intriguing – Cissokho, at 5.0 to Enrique’s 6.2, would be a hugely enticing proposition if he can force his way to the front of the pecking order.

Poyet Arrives at Sunderland

Sunderland have named Gus Poyet as the new man in charge at the Stadium of Light earlier today. The former Brighton boss takes the Wearside reins as the Black Cats look to recover from a run that leaves them with just a single point accrued from the opening seven fixtures – at least six points less than all but Palace so far.

The Scout Says: While a trip to Swansea is far from straightforward, the Uruguayan will be given the chance to win the fans over in his first home game in charge as Newcastle roll up in Gameweek 9. The Black Cats then have three road trips in four (hul, sto, avl), but with City, Chelsea and Spurs amongst their next visitors, the schedule is far from easy. Poyet will be looking to spark Adam Johnson and Emanuele Giacherrini into life on the flanks but with Steven Fletcher still sidelined with a dislocated shoulder, the burden of goals lies on the broad shoulders of Jozy Altidore – given that the US international is yet to score this season, it’s clear that Poyet has a considerable task on his hands.

Studge for sure, but Giroud is lacking flare at the moment. Especially with the changes going on in midfield, he's not got a solid supporter he can learn to read their moves.

Well I'm a little concerned but I'm guessing he'll come good. I'd lose 0.5 if I sell him too so I need to be sure. His fixts are too good to sell at the mo, plus I've got more pressing matters in the midfield.

Because he is running into form, while some of the others are plateauing, or going down the other side. And because he is a proper footballer, like van Persie or Lambert.

    I repost this, without apology:

Jeez, there was some crappy statistical analysis going on earlier.

Everyone who came back with a "contradictory" example then illustrated with a striker and a midfielder, or in one hilarious case, with a striker and a defender. We were talking about two STRIKERS.

Also, try to remember that bookies odds are NOT correct - they reflect their own view of how the MARKET will operate - including their own 15%. So, they are just a guide ... the real odds are much tighter than that. In other words, favourites odds are always shorter, and outsiders always longer.

So, my advice is, do NOT have two strikers from the same team ... UNLESS you can be sure that that team will USUALLY score slightly more than two goals a game. And I wouldn't even back Barcelona to do that.

      DOOS,

Tottenham strikers are not that consistent, United same, Chelsea LOLLZZ, etc etc,

I assume you are talking about Suarez and Studge above? If so, and assuming they have excelent fixtures and are in form and seem to be the only 2 scoring for Liverpool.... why NOT have both.... not all season but at least for their good fixtures.... dont rule it out, just pick the single players you think will score the most and if they happen to be in same team then who cares.... if 2x Ronaldos played for United and cost 8m in midfield wouldnt you get bboth!!?

Why would you have to apologize? Anyways, there was a lot of talk about odds and whatnot. What about just looking at it logically? Most would agree that Suarez is a good option. Most would also agree that Sturridge is a good option. This is of course personal preference, but many would rank both, on their own, over options like Giroud, Rooney, Lukaku. If that is the case, it would make sense to double up.

If your "watchlist" in the striker department is different, like say you have Suarez > Giroud > Benteke > Sturridge, it makes sense to get in the first three and ignore Sturridge. If you don't rate them, makes sense not to get them.

Again, my point is that I just CANNOT see why the appeal of either player changes if you have both, compared to if you only have one of them. Owning both doesn't change the probability of them getting points, just like owning only one of them, or neither, won't change the points they get.

Ludicrous Doos. Your point is that having two goalscorers from the same team is bad because they won't both score in the same gameweek. How would their FPL classification change their chance of scoring in the same gameweek?

Your entire point rests on individual gameweeks. My entire point is that they don't have to score in the same gameweek to be a viable long-term combination. I haven't heard anything that addresses that.

If you agree that both player A and player B are good options to have, then you are saying that both will score well over a period of time. Owning one does not change the number of goals the other one scores.

If you looked at your Fantasy team as shares or some other form of investment, then the first rule is not to over-commit to one asset. Its called portfolio theory, or don't put all your eggs in one basket.

The point isn't that SAS will definitely be a bad move, the point - I think - is that on average doubling up will be a bad move.

Its all fine when Liverpool are knocking in 3 a game. Imagine they have another Soton performance, and you have captained one of SAS - thats the big risk.

My example with Mertesacker and Giroud was to highlight the fact that you are being illogical in your statistics when you say that if you own two stikers from the same side you have to halve their odds of scoring.
For arguments sake lets say that we have the following odds for players to score.
      Sturridge 40%
      Suarez 45%
      Giroud 35%

Quite clearly the most desirable two forwards to play in this week would be Sturridge and Suarez.
The odds of at least one scoring is 67%, the odds of both scoring is 18%.
Owning both does not diminish the chance that either player will score.
If you have Suarez and Giroud then the odds of at least one scoring would is 64%, both scoring is 15%.

After playing about 2 seaons of FPL. Was this the only season where it actually paid not to follow any statistics or even, dare i say the scout?

Its as if the FPL gods have just taken a large dump on anything eluding to logic and divine intervention sparked players in Ramsey, Yaya, Giroud, Barkley + SOTON defense.

Pre-seaon seemed predictable enough. Then all of a sudden. A large demi god of a turd just lambasted anything remotely relating to stats or logic.

    Lol.

Week after week ive plummeted down the rankings after starting with a fairly decent 80 points.

RVP(C) being the main cause of most failings coupled with inadvertent transfers at the wrong time + 10 injuries and three weeks leaves me at a lowly 1.5m rank. LOL.

Soton look good defensively at the tail end of last year.

Giroud had a fantastic preseason and he's playing for an in form Arsenal side with arguably
the best player in the premiership feeding him chances.

Barkely and Ramsey you have the 3 years after leg break scenario. (both are widely regarded as fantastic footballers).

Yaya is in a very attacking team (we knew the manager was like this) and is a bonus point magnet.

I think experienced players have been very slow to grasp the big changes this new bonus system has made.

I thought I wouldnt need a transfer this week but after having watched SUN - MUN and TOT - WHU games, I was kinda disappointed by the roles Rooney and Eriksen had in the pitch, And after reading the above article, Enrique may lose his position. All of them have great fixtures ahead but maybe a good hit lets say Eriksen + Enrique -> Hazard + Rangel or Eriksen + Rooney -> Paulinho + Aguero for example could give me many more points than leaving as it is. Thoughts?

    Mignolet (Lewis)
    Enrique, Coleman, Evra (Clyne, Chester)
Michu, Ozil, Eriksen, Whittingham (4.3 mid)

I wouldn't worry about rotating. Good players, no matter what their price can get you pts whatever the game.

Of those at the moment Barkley and a fit Brady are still the best.

I like Januzaj as he's so cheap and I don't mind him coming on during a match for that price and considering the team he plays for.

I have two transfers and I'm not particular sure as to what to do, there are just so many options. I wouldn't mind selling Rooney but I am restricted with my ability to get Lukaku because I already have 3 Everton players and I'd rather get rid of HBA as a priority.

    Mignolet

    Baines, Coleman, Mertisacker, Clyne, YMbiwa
    Michu, Eriksen, Ramsey, HBA, Barkley
    Rooney, Sturridge, Giroud

Walcott & Benteke would be in my future plans and I wouldn't mind some Chelsea cover as well. Thoughts?

Can you afford Oscar for HBA..if so do it.

If not...I'd go cheap replacement...that leaves you cash in the bank to upgrade Eriksen perhaps if he continues his poor FPL form.

HBA and save the transfer. Once Evertons fixtures turn sour get rid of Baines for Terry. And the next week start thinking of Eriksen -> Oscar or Walcott.

I'm of the view that Lukaku is going to be pretty near essential this season, so you should prob look to get rid of either coleman or baines soon (depending on whether you need to extra cash).

but having said that, HBA is prob a bigger priority for you at the mo. Walcott > Oscar if both are fit but if you can't wait then get Oscar in.

I actually like that move a lot, especially given the respective forms of ManU and Soton atm. I'd do it, and look towards Eriksen --> Walcott in the near future if Eriksen continues to annoy us all by underperforming.

I'd get yaya or oscar .... but, since your bank balance is NIL; u can wait a week and then do the walcott and another transfer....

I'm not particularly happy with Eriksen either.. still gave me nothing....

U could try Januzaj for short term though..... If you're thinking about shipping Rooney out in a week or two

Only issue I have with a Benteke Lukaku Suarez frontline is I just wouldn't feel comfortable captaining a player who isn't in a top 6 team. And the big midfielders are not delivering thus far, so I'd essentially be capping Suarez every week.

    Doosra!

ROONEY TO LUKAKU IS A GOOD MOVE.

Doos I completely disagree about your opinion of Rooney for the next few fixtures, I don't care if they are at home. This is because in terms of threat and creativity in the last two games (using stats) both Rooney and RVP are destroyed by options such as Lukaku, Sturridge, Suarez & probably Remy (haven't checked the last one). Your table is based on season long form but it takes no realistic account of his recent form - which has been woeful. Southampton have a set up where they have two good defensive players in front of another 2 good CBs and a great shot stopper. Rooney and RVP will find it hard to score from open play due to the fact we (I'm a United fan) have nobody to link the play or dominate the midfield - Kagawa starting would change things significantly for the better imo but I bet he won't start. Then we have Stoke, this game could very well be a far better one for Rooney but even if he gets a goal or two, Lukaku will have smashed Hull and will be doing the exact same thing to Villa that week.

Fair play to him then. Although Rooney is still quality he's playing for the whole team right now because of how poor our starting 11 is. Constantly dropping deep to defend and start up attacks that break down further up the pitch, also hardly getting any service and when he does get on the ball the defenders just smother RVP as none of the wide men make proper runs to distract defenders.

Hi, not been on here for a while but just wondered...

Is anyone else really struggling this year or is it just me?

In the past few years I've had a couple of top 5,000 finishes but this year, although I changed my philosophy a bit, pts wise it just isn't clicking. Team for GW 8:

    Mignolet
    Kolo, Ivanovic, Coleman
    Oscar, Ramsey, Yaya, Ozil
    Lukaku, Giroud, Sturridge

    Bench: Boruc, Barkley, Fonte, Whittaker

Team value up to 105m which is positive but on 319pts which isn't really.

    I don't think that's a bad squad is it?

        http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/58730/event-history/7/

Took the risk & changed HBA & Soldado to Yaya & Lukaku on Sunday as I had just enough cash to do it & knew Lukaku would increase.

I've got practically every 50/50 call wrong. Boruc or Mignolet - wrong again this week etc etc
