Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 28

Our new regular round-up of the fresh injury worries occurred over the previous weekend arrives this afternoon. We also dig deeper to discover just why a trio of key players only made the bench over Saturday and Sunday’s fixtures:

Arsenal
Arsene Wenger revealed Mesut Ozil was “fit to start” away to Stoke after recovering from a thigh injury. The German was only utilised as a second-half sub, however, as his manager reckons he has played “many many games” and is wary of fatigue playing a part in his record signing’s displays.

Aston Villa
Chris Herd has only just recovered from a hamstring problem but is out of the picture for the foreseeable future after the club released the following statement yesterday:

“The club can confirm that due to personal reasons Chris Herd will be unavailable for selection until further notice. There will be no further comment and we request that Chris’s privacy be respected.”

Cardiff
Craig Noone took to twitter to confirm he missed yesterday’s trip to Tottenham after picking up ”a slight knock”, though is optimistic of a return in time for the weekend clash against Fulham.

Crystal Palace
Glenn Murray was only fit enough for the bench as Palace travelled to Swansea yesterday. The forward made his first start of the season in Gameweek 27 but dropped out of the starting XI after picking up a knock in midweek. Joe Ledley played the full 90 minutes but is set to be assessed before joining up with the Wales squad this week – the midfielder admitted he is struggling with a hip problem and may have to withdraw from international duties. In the last few minutes, Palace have also confirmed Kagisho Dikgacoi has withdrawn from the South Africa squad to face Brazil because of injury.

Everton
Roberto Martinez admitted Romelu Lukaku was only fit enough to be utilised from the bench after he picked up a chest infection prior to Saturday’s visit of West Ham.

Fulham
Brede Hangeland was forced off early in the first period after an accidental clash of heads with team-mate Kieran Richardson and was taken to hospital for scans on Saturday evening. Fulham confirmed he was given the all-clear to return home, though it’s uncertain whether he will join up with the Norway squad in midweek.

Hull
The match commentary from the club’s official website revealed Curtis Davies “had been limping for much of the second half” before he was subbed off towards the end of Saturday’s 4-1 home defeat by Newcastle.

Newcastle
The Magpies back-up keeper Rob Elliot missed Saturday’s home hammering with a knee problem and has withdrawn from this week’s Republic of Ireland squad.

Norwich
Having been handed his first start since Gameweek 23 last weekend, Rickie Van Wolfswinkel was expected to start for Norwich’s trip to Villa but was ruled out of the match against Paul Lambert’s side with a knee problem, Chris Hughton has revealed. Robert Snodgrass lasted just 45 minutes before being withdrawn at the break due to a wrist injury and has subsequently pulled out of the Scotland squad. The Canaries boss elaborated on the trio after yesterday’s defeat:

“Ricky got a whack on his knee in the Tottenham game. He didn’t train at the beginning of the week but we felt generally it would be okay. Unfortunately it was still too sore come Saturday. Leroy does have a hamstring pull. We are still assessing how bad it is and we had to take Robert off at half-time because he felt his wrist when he fell making a tackle towards the end of the first half so he won’t go with Scotland.”

Earlier this afternoon, Hughton’s worries were compounded by the news that Martin Olsson has been forced to withdraw from Sweden’s midweek friendly with Turkey due to a shoulder problem.

Southampton
The Saints’ official twitter stream confirmed second choice keeper Kelvin Davis missed Saturday’s home loss to Liverpool after picking up a knock.

Swansea
Pablo Hernandez lasted just 22 minutes of the first period before being subbed off with yet another hamstring problem. After yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Palace, Garry Monk also confirmed he subbed off both Ashley Williams and Wilfried Bony due to illness:

“We’ve had illness in the camp over the last few days. Bony’s been ill, Ash was sick all last night and Pablo felt his hamstring in the first minute. Ash was ill today and has two badly bruised toes, but it shows his character and the leader that he is that he continues to play.”

Tottenham
After grabbing a goal and assist in Thursday’s Europa League win over Dnipro, Christian Eriksen was expected to be handed a starting role at home to Cardiff yesterday. Unfortunately for Tim Sherwood’s side, the Dane missed out altogether with a back problem, the club’s official twitter stream has confirmed. Zeki Fryers has withdrawn from the England Under 21 squad this morning with an ankle injury.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Everton's DGW should come after GW31, so that's when Lukaku needs to be drafted in.

Everton have 2 more fixtures left than most teams after GW30.

          Borini, no, just no.

Lukaku is a must for the run in IMO - 2 extra fixtures are invaluable.

I've owned him 4 times this season, he's always been a let-down. I watch Borini and he looks really good, and has pens. But he only seems to score in the big games, but Lukaku and AJ is probably better.

Borini is good player but he scores occasionally
              mostly in big games

He is a better pick in UFPL imo

        MOlsson since GW22

        6,7,5,0,7,0

Aside from the 2 0s that's not bad for a 4.2/4.3 defender especially given he's played City and Spurs in that spell

Alright, trying - like everyone else! - to plan ahead for the DGW and plot my transfers in advance now. Will be able to field 10 players this week with RVP (c), and then with a total of 3 hits (-12) over the following two weeks, put this out during GW31:

    Marshall
    Evra / Demel / Olsson
Nolan / Nasri (or Navas) / Toure / Sterling
    Suarez / Kun / Studge

Bnech: Haz / Ward / Chambers

Sound like a decent plan and line-up?

As things stand, I can field 10 players gw 29. However, three of them are doubts (M. Olsson, Puncheon & Noone).

Moving on to dgw 31, it looks like I will be fielding 8 dgw players without taking hits.

    Questions:

    a) Should I save FT this week?
    b) Should I save my wildcard or use it for 11 dgw 31 players?

    Thanks.

If you decided that Stoke players were better than investing in Norwich players for this tricky G/W I think you blatantly made the correct call.

    Kosc to:

    A) Terry
    B) Cahill
    C) Bassong
    D) Olsson
    E) Chambers
    F) Evra

Current defense is Coleman, Azp, Burner, Wardinjo. I am afraid if I go Chelsea/ United defender that will mean too much cash at the back or it isn't too much cash? If it is possible reasons for the option you prefer

it depends on your plans for the GW31. If you have enough money for SAS, Aguero and all the midfielders you want then go with one of the Chelsea defenders. If the budget is tight then Chambers or Olsson are decent enough alternatives.
Another option is a City defender if you don't care much about the next GW and focus on the DGW.

The thing is it depends if I go Mata or no Mata. I have money for SAS. I could go Nolan instead of Mata and problem solved. I am not so sure who has higher upside. Great answer man. The thing is I still haven't decided about my GW 31 midfield.

        Probably:

        Mata Sterling Hazard Yoyo

That means cheap. I could go Nolan/ Livermore/ A.J. and go big in defense. Really difficult decision

Hi, as things stand, I can field 10 players gw 29.

      Thanks.

Baines is a good player, but completely overpriced this year. He got his first assist at the weekend and no shots on target at home all season. He needs to come down to about 6.5m before I'd consider him.

I think it was his second assist at home. The first one was when he was fouled just outside the box against Norwich. Mirallas fired the free kick home. His first direct assist at home this weekend i guess...Definitely agree on the price. Tempted to get him back in...

There really is a paucity of genuine armband contenders for GW29. One thing it has done is made me look beyond the usual suspects, and I think it's time I contributed something anyway - so here's my take on the remaining options...

    West Brom v Man Utd:

If you have RVP or ROONEY in your squad, your decision will likely be an easy one. There's little reason not to put your faith in either this week, but please also bear in mind that West Brom have held Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton to 1-1 draws at home in recent weeks (as well as at Spurs away).

MATA too could be a popular choice but he is still yet to score a goal this season and even his run of assists seems to have dried up lately.

Since Brom are hardly prolific, EVRA or DE GEA could perhaps be worth considering.

    Cardiff v Fulham:

Little on offer here. Both have leaked goals for fun so perhaps we are left with a cheeky punt on the likes of CAMPBELL or SIDWELL. Few will go down either route!

    Crystal Palace v Southampton:

Here at least we have a decent prospect of cleansheets. Though Southampton pose obvious attacking threat through the likes of LAMBERT, RODRIGUEZ & LALLANA, Palace can be expected to try to keep it tight at home and I'd say defenders from either side are worth a look; particularly WARD, LOVREN, FONTE & SHAW.

    Norwich v Stoke:

Initially I thought this would be another likely source of cleansheets, but with Norwich's recent capitulation to Villa and injury concerns over OLSSON, maybe it's best to steer clear. But if ADAM escapes a ban, he could have his say on which way the points go. CROUCH may be an even better prospect, with strikers so thin on the ground this week.

    Chelsea v Tottenham:

It's a shame these two face each other this week, but does it take all of their assets out of the reckoning? HAZARD is top of the Captain's Poll currently (on 36%, 10% clear of second-placed RvP), and is undeniably in fine form. But he is also something of a 'flat-track bully', as a quick perusal of his history page will confirm. He may indeed be the best of a bad bunch, but I can't get past the feeling that this clash with Spurs dents his appeal. TERRY would seem an obvious alternative in light of Chelsea's ability to keep cleansheets at home, but the recent form of ADEBAYOR suggests this may be a risky strategy.

It's clear then that there is no clear choice. For many, it will likely come down to who remains in our blank-gameweek-ravaged squads. FWIW, I'm leaning towards Fonte.

Spurs have failed to score only once in the PL (Norwich away) since Sherwood took over.

Yet Chelsea have only conceded 4 PL goals since Christmas.

      Conundrum. 😉

Good post. But how you can leave out the caliber of a certain Torres is beyond me.

Good spot! I should have included Fernando especially in light of Eto'os recent omission.

I'm planning on visiting Barcelona in beginning of May and of course i want to see Barca play live.

The game is against Getafe (May 4th). Does anybody have any experience how to purchase the ticktes? Is it better to buy them online in advance or should i buy them on the counter before the game?

I went to a Barca v Espanyol game about 10 years ago and bought tickets when we were there. Think it was the day before the match.

They were surprisingly cheap so don't get suckered into paying a fortune for them through a third party.

Plus, prepare yourself to see more mopeds than you ever have in your whole life. When the final whistle goes the stadium empties in about 10 minutes and literally 10,000 mopeds fill the streets!

      Enjoy it.

        Great input, thanks!

I was checking online deals but i must say it`s strange. The cheapest tickets start around 80 Eur?!? I wouldn' pay 160 Eur (2 tickets) to see Getafe.

    ADAM appealing red card:

"Charlie and the Club are surprised and disappointed to learn of this and will appeal vigorously against the decision."

I wonder what a vigorous appeal looks like? Perhaps they've engaged Monty Panesar to do it for them.

No chance according to pundits. Ref has already stated that if he had seen incident he would have sent Adam off
