Team of the Season – Aaron Ramsey

As the 2013/14 campaign got underway, Aaron Ramsey was far from Fantasy radars. Despite being kindly priced across the Fantasy games – opening with a starting cost of 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – the Welshman had done little to justify our investment, with just seven goals to his name in the previous five seasons:

The Statistics

Three matches into the new campaign and Ramsey, with a single assist accrued, had made a minimal impact. A security of starts earned him a 0.1 price rise but the arrival of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid had Fantasy managers looking to the German, as well as Theo Walcott, as the likeliest source of points within the Arsenal midfield.

Instead, it was Ramsey who flourished as the Gunners’ main man. Bagging a brace and maximum bonus on Ozil’s debut in a 3-1 win at Sunderland in Gameweek 4, he served up a 15-point return which immediately saw his price rise to 5.9. With Walcott sidelined through injury, the Welshman quickly became the obvious replacement for Fantasy managers looking for a route into Arsene Wenger’s midfield, with five set of double figures in 10 appearances from that Black Cats match onwards.

By the time he was forced off with a thigh injury in Gameweek 18, Ramsey had risen to 7.6 in price, producing eight goals, six assists and 15 bonus points. Unfortunately for Wenger and Fantasy managers alike, a couple of injury setbacks meant that Ramsey was sidelined until Gameweek 33 but he quickly hit his stride upon returning. A sub appearance at West Ham harvested an assist before Ramsey delivered double figure hauls in two of his final three starts, as he ended the season on 146 points from just 23 appearances in a real breakout Fantasy campaign.

The Prospects

Price is the main issue for Ramsey. There’s no question he’s set for a significant rise across the Fantasy games, though it remains to be seen just how much his cost will escalate – given that his average of 6.3 points per game was second only to Yaya Toure amongst midfielders in FPL, though, a move into the premium bracket wouldn’t be too much of a surprise.

Certainly, if he continues in the same vein, plenty of Fantasy managers will look to acquire Ramsey over the likes of Ozil and Santi Cazorla, though for many, a fit-again Walcott remains the key target amongst Wenger’s premium priced midfielders. Whilst his well-timed runs from deep will surely come to fruition once again, Ramsey doesn’t have penalties, set-pieces or corners to fall back on – factors that perhaps mattered less at last season’s price but ones which may make the difference if he’s catapulted into the 9.0+ bracket. On the other hand, you could argue that whilst the likes of Toure and Steven Gerrard relied heavily on penalties or dead-ball situations to boost their points in 2013/14, the Arsenal man’s ability to deliver from open play is another factor in his favour.

Taking both his previous lack of goals and those months on the sidelines through injury into consideration, there’s still a hope Ramsey will be shifted into the upper mid-price bracket – increasing his price by up to 4.0 would be a big step, bearing in mind he did only manage to start 20 league games in 2013/14. The downside of this scenario is that, with a favourable cost, it’s hard to see any Fantasy managers overlooking the Welshman – essentially, almost every active team would have him on board.

If he can steer clear of injuries, Ramsey could be Fantasy gold next season if he can maintain the momentum that saw his start and finish the season so strongly. At a time when many of the big-hitters are over in Brazil for next month’s World Cup, Wales’ unsuccessful qualifying campaign will allow him the time to rest and recuperate and approach the upcoming campaign in peak condition – an ideal scenario for those eyeing up his acquisition in 2014/15.

Looks like there will be plenty of Midfield options next season. Just the prices that will be the problem.

I think we need to react to the form players earlier next year and not let our personal problems with their personalities or how they scored in the past get in the way of getting decent scores in FF.

Ramsey is a good case of people ignoring the unfashionable player, but in fairness, Yaya's early good form was purely down to set-pieces, many of which he was lucky to have even taken, as well as a sudden improvement in free-kick taking.

I've been looking at the possibility of the 4-3-3, based largely on cost. I can see a lot of midfielders being in the usual Striker price range, making the cheaper quality defenders necessary.
The problem then comes down to getting the right top 3 mids at any time and being prepared to move them in and out more.

In his first column for Paddy Power, Scholes said: 'Wayne might be a player who’d retire come 31 or 32, given the amount of football he’s played.'

'Wayne’s peak may have been a lot younger than what we’d expect of footballers traditionally. Age 28 or 29 has been the normal "peak". With Wayne, it could have been when he scored 27 league '
goals in 2011-12 when he 26.'

'He might be a player who’d retire come 31 or 32, given the amount of football he’s played.
'Ryan Giggs has been on the go for ages, but he adjusted his position. Can Wayne do the same? I don’t think Wayne will be able to play centre forward until he’s 34 or 35.'

is he warning his potential suitors?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

            UFPL discussion

Yesterday we heard from Alex Bowers - the winner of last season's UFPL Beta game. Who is going to play the game next season? What did you think of it? What tweaks would you make? And do you think that its point scoring system - whereby wider qualities of defensive midfielders gain points - could be a vialble alternative to the FPL's bonus point system?

i was just wondering where the daily topic was

don't know if it is possible, but some kind of alert to remind you to do subs. I get alerts on ipad via the unofficial fpl app to remind of scores and injuries.
I know I could just set reminder on phone, but then i would need a reminder to set reminder

I liked it, a lot depends on the price as well.
I play the UEFA CL and EL one for some time now and I like substitute options.

I doubt any people who play mini-leagues with me would play it.

I think the points system should be viewed for what it is, an alternative to the FPL one, but I wouldn't replace it. I like the Bonus points in FPL, and wouldn't want to see it removed and I think that adding too many point scoring possibilities might discourage players , who want just a simple structure.

I find the UFPL as a more levelled up version of FPL, as you can tinker more as well as focus on different point possibilities, however the main FPL is great for its simplicity.

I found that if you don't get your team right straight away, you'll be playing catch up until the next transfer window. Get it wrong from the start and I reckon people will just give up. I did enjoy the GW dynamic of swapping players around after each game day and that's a big improvement on FPL.

I think it's going to come down to price. Too expensive and I just don't see it being worth my time. If it's cheap, I'll give it a bash. My worry is that it I reckon 95% of the people I play FPL with, won't bother with UFPL because it's pay-to-play and that'll kill a lot of the fun out of it.

                      I think it's due to be £5.

Though some countries don't allow gambling on foreign sites, so this will restrict the ability of some here to play.

                    I will be playing UFPL.

I also play several other games that have an interactive element during the GW which I find far more interesting.
I would like to play a full season of a game before suggesting changes, as something that may not have worked over the 12 weeks may even out over the whole year.
If bad luck/bad choices limit your initial squad the loan system is there to cover it.

I like the idea but I only want to be committing to playing one fantasy football game per year and that will be the most popular one. Until UFPL becomes the #1 game, I will only play FPL.

I played, and enjoyed it. I liked not having to worry about price changes, it would be nice if that persisted next season but I seem to recall that the early rules did include tracking the FPL prices, abeit at a reduced rate.

I also think that there should be two wild cards. one that can be played from the beginning of the season to one week after the transfer window closes, and another in january that does the same. That at least gives us a chance to re-organise.

I liked the point scoring: quality players scored points, and there was no bap lottery draw at the end.

I like the point scoring and squad size as an alternative, but think it relies a little too heavily on planning for fixtures.

I'm a pretty dedicated FPL'er but the UFPL beta was too much for me, I gave up after about a month.
Having to set your subs three nights a week if there's matches on Sat/Sun/Mon, when I remembered to log in I couldn't make the changes because you have to wait an hour after the last match had finished that day, that was annoying.
& picking a squad was very tricky although I acknowledge that was partly due to the price rises of the 'must have' players. Had to throw in 3-4 fillersI never had any intention of picking, and never did.

Have just been having a play with the FiT game, think my group stages team would look something like this:

                  Lloris
                  Debuchy | Vertonghen | Baines
                  Honda | Dzagoev | Cabaye | Sterling | Mirallas
                  Neymar | Messi

Need to read up on the rules of it however. Guessing there maybe transfer windows between say the 1st round of group games and 2nd etc? If so will have to have a rethink.

As soon as Brazil/Croatia kick off you will receive 3 Free transfers. You can use those to swap out players that have already played for those that are yet to play. You get to keep the points from transferred out players. So, you should have 14 players scoring points for your iTeam in GR1. We will be releasing some game guides over the next few weeks.

In relation to what 'In like Flynn' has said above & what I've said responding, we'll we see a new strategy next season in how we approach buying X amount of heavy hitting players?

A lot of talk has been on doubling up on Chelsea defense, but we all know roughly they'll come in between 6/6.5 respectively. We then have Coleman & Baines & at least a ManC player to look at (Zabaleta/our mate Kolorov) those two will surely be 6/6.5.

Then we move onto the (again as I like Flynn intially eludes to) midfield.
Hazard, YaYa (if both still here) Ozil, Ramsey, Sterling, Gerrard, Silva, Nasri, Mata (just to name a few.......

& of course the frightening strike force, Suarez, RVP, Aguero, Sturridge, Adebeyor, Bony all set to rise...

I genuinly see next year as possibly most diverse yet....

We have seen all the people's thoughts on their own formations/strategies, but my strategy will still revolve around three heavy hitting I usually strikers, i usually stick with 3 heavy hitting mids & just 1 def, so standard 3-4-3 formation

2x solid first choice GKs (10m total)
                  1x 6/7m def, 5,5,5,5 (27m total)
                  3x mid at 10+m, then 2x 5/6m mids (40m total)
                  3x strikers (23m left)

That's just a rough estimate, I'd certainly look to lower costs in def/GK to get my disired heavy hitting strike force. We all have these problems at start of season, but this year will certainly be more difficult....

i just did a rough cost plan and it was something like this
                      9.5 for keepers
                      23.5 for defenders
                      36 for mids
                      31 for forwards
though i can easily see reduction of mid to strengthen defence

This happens every year. The players that did well increase in price and everyone panics. Luckily for us, it's not the same players doing well every season, so just spread value throughout your team so that you can be more flexible when the new big hitters emerge.

I will pick my essential big hitters based on fixtures and then calculate every player points per million per game to show me the best value players. I will then check their history and fixtures to help me decide on who to get.

Dont u think Tinkerman that the heavy hitters of this year will continue their form next?

Obviously I can only talk on my own behalf, but certainly frightens me not owning the quality of Hazard, YaYa, Ramsey, RVP, Aguero & Suarez, they can only get better or continue at same rate as last year....

Some will, some won't. We will be sure to hold/get the ones that do well and shed the ones that don't for cheaper players who emerge as good performers.

It doesn't always work out. The dream team of the 2012/13 season is completely different to this last season. Look forward to a new bunch of big hitters and must have players next season.

I think I will probably spend less on GK & Def and put the extra to my strikers as 23M is not enough, especially if you want at least one of the big hitters.

Repost from the DZ last night in case some have missed this:

Not sure if this has been posted before but a very interesting article from the great data analysis guys at FPL Discovery (nothing to do with me). This article is about the Final Top 10k standings and the managers managing them in.

"Turns out that successful novices accounted for only 9% of the final top 10K; the other 91% had some experience behind them.

For almost 80% it was a first top 10K finish; 13% finished there once before; for the other 7% a top 10K finish is perhaps nothing but a routine.

For 867 teams in the top 10K it was a second consecutive top 10K finish; only 1 team has managed 8 consecutive top 10K finishes. Which one? Bring on the next section."

Does this assume that the user has been using the same username/email address? If someone who finished 231st last year delete his old email account and created another he would be treated as a 'novice' ?

As always makes for very interesting reading. According to the stats I was one of 72 10k finishers with 4 top 10k finishes.

Overall, it looks like the stats dont really support this season as being the season of the casual.

Looking at the group games which team do you think have the easiest ride terms of Attacking and Defensive prospects? Think mine are:

                    Group Game Best Attacking Prospects:

Argentina vs Iran, Bosnia-Herzegovina & Nigeria
France vs Switzerland, Ecuador & Honduras
Belgium vs Algeria, Russia & South Korea
                    Brazil vs Croatia, Mexico, Cameroon

                    Group Game Best Defensive Prospects:

France vs Switzerland, Ecuador & Honduras
Belgium vs Algeria, Russia & South Korea
Russia vs Belgium, Algeria & South Korea

Going off those I think I will definatly be looking at Messi, Cabaye, Mirallas, Neymar, Lloris, Debuchy, Vertonghen and Akinfeev for the Group games.

Very solid defensively, doubt they get battered in any game bar potentially Argentina.

Disagree with France vs Switzerland from an attacking sense, or vs anybody else for that matter. France hardly prolific and my outside punt is that Switzerland will top that group.

I expect Brazil to have a very easy route into the knock-outs, as well as Argentina although similarly to Greece, I don't think Iran will get battered, set-up very organised and defensive.

Belgium vs Russia will be low-scoring as well IMO.

So I don't think Belgium vs Russia will be goalless but just put them there to show their opponents.

Okay, so you mean France has good defensive and attacking prospects against all of its group opponents?

I would count out Switzerland and Ecuador. These tournaments are very difficult for European teams. Beware all Americans, especially South Americans.

I think he's just bored of Manchester and wants out after winning 2 league titles. Think he realises he's not going to play in any Champions League Finals at Man City when he's already 31.

Not sure I get the last bit? Because City aren't good enough or because he's too old? Unless he goes to Bayern or Real, he arguably won't have a better chance anywhere else

City aren't good enough, they've made little to no dent in the Champions League so far and I'd imagine it will take them another couple of years before they break into the top bracket and start challenging, by which time Yaya could be 34 and not starting every game for City.

Yeah, I just noticed Ozil took a couple for the Jerries in qualifiers. Not sure who was on the pitch at the time.

Yeh I didnt know any of them when I set it up and have just gone with comments from here. I put Gerrard as a doubt as I didn't know think it was 100% guaranteed until there has been a penalty with both Baines and Gerrard on the field. Regarding the Germans would you put them in front of Ozil?

I've no idea about the Germans to be honest as I know Oz took some in qualifying. Just would have expected one of those 2 as they seem much more prolific in my mind. Not based on any stats though I'm afraid so can't help there.

Already having thoughts on next season on the front seven...

                      Ramsey/Walcott Eriksen Sterling Yaya/Nasri Fodder

                      RVP Costa Bony

I'm thinking Saurez will be too dear, and RVP will be priced down and a firm fav of Van Gaal. Depends on the Mata situation too. If he's starting at no10 and is 9.0m approx, could be a good option. RVP maybe 11.5-12.0m this year?

Costa will be better value than Haz, and nailed on. 10-11.0m?

Nasri could well by a decent way into City. Served me well late season, if he's 8.0-8.5m again to Yaya at 11-12.0m I'll be getting him.

                      Thoughts?

I would wildly predict these prices to be..

                        Ramsey - 9+
                        Walcott - 9.5+
                        Eriksen - 8+
                        Sterling - 7
                        Yaya - 12
                        Nasri - 9

                        RVP - 12
                        Costa - 11
                        Bony - 9+

You wouldn't have much left for 2 keepers and 5 defenders..

I tried to make a GW1 RMT and it was horrifically over budget too, its impossible to gauge prices for a full team and nobody knows who's going to be solid budget options until the pricing comes out.

I reckon that lot will be way too much to afford. Also keep in mind that premium centre backs offer good value. a 6.5m def from Chelsea or ManC will get you more than a 6.5m mid for example.

I haven't really looked at the rules yet just banged a team in, can't imagine they will be anything out of the ordinary. I did the Telegraph Champions league one that they set up after the group stages which I think will be similar and Im doing ok in it. Best tip is to plan your transfers because you have a set amount to us and can use them between games so you can swap between key strikers to maximise returns

It's the league of choice at my work. Points are start 2, sub 1, goal 5, key contribution 3 (upto 2 players can get this ie. toure plays a ball to the byline and zabeteta crosses first time for sopmeone to score both get the kc), clean sheet full 3, clean sheet part 2, every goal conceded after the first -1, yellow card -1, red -3 and 3 for a penalty save.

Anyway you 40 transfers in the WC and can change lines ups before every game, not just first kick off.

Also budget increases by 10 million after group stage as there's less bargains as it goes on.

                            My team is:

                            Cesar

                            Agulair, Periera, Lichenstiener

                            Oscar, Toure, Vidal, Pjanic, Ki

                            Neymar, Alexis

With enough budget left over to make sure I can transfer in anyone I want (within reason).

Plan is to rotate Neymar with the top fwd of the day to maximise goal potential plus a few other transfers.

Transfer plan is 16 group stage, 4 clearing out dead wood before knock outs, 8 last 16, 4 qf, 4sf, 4 final.

Who do we think is going to win the WC?

I'd expect Brazil to win it being the home nation with a great team, but my money's on Argentina

Tough to choose, Argentina's downfall is their fairly poor defence. I'd say Brazil or Portugal - really can't see Ronaldo being stopped by anyone, and they've now got a solid midfield and backline

Im trying to get some world cup stats together, does anyone know a good site which is ideally set out similar to the whoscored squad list and shows how many appearances they have made and then I'm just looking for goals, assists and yellow cards, ideally just for the qualifiers.

i.e something like this but for the qualifiers http://www.whoscored.com/Teams/409/Archive/Brazil-Brazil

Following on from that anybody want to have a guess what these headers mean on the ESPN site

Looking at a strategy to start next season and I'm looking at the rough following costs.

                      Total
                      GK 4 4.5 8.5
                      Def 4 4 4.5 5 6 23.5
                      Mid 10 9.5 6.5 5.5 4.5 36
                      Att 12 10 8 30

                      98

Allow 2m for upgrades to key positions (keeper or midfield more than likely)
If scoring goes the same as this year I can see spending on your defense at the start of the year at the expense of midfield possibly paying off for the first few weeks.

Working in the form players in Mid/Att as needed over the first half dozen GWs.

And of course the formatting goes belly up!
                        GK = 8.5
                        Def = 23.5
                        Mid = 36
                        Att = 30
