Team of the Season – Luis Suarez

Suspended for the first five matches of 2013/14 after an infamous altercation with Branislav Ivanovic, Luis Suarez was handed an 11.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game after serving up 23 goals, 10 assists and 34 bonus points in his first season under Brendan Rodgers:

The Statistics

In the Uruguayan’s absence, Daniel Sturridge had stepped up for the Merseysiders and scored in four of the opening five fixtures but the Reds were clearly struggling without Suarez and had averaged just one goal per game prior to his first appearance of the season.

Partnering Sturridge up front as Rodgers changed his tactics to accommodate both through the middle, Suarez set the tone for what was to follow with a 13-point return away to Sunderland, courtesy of a two goals and maximum bonus points in a 3-1 win. Three double-figure hauls in his first four matches underlined the strength of Suarez’ armband potential and saw many squads re-arranged in order to acquire his talents – with Sturridge still producing the goods, though, snapping up both became a popular tactic for our three-man frontlines.

Suarez’ exploits over December will be long-remembered by Fantasy managers. Starting off with four goals and an assist in a 5-1 win over Norwich, he delivered 77 points in only four appearances, with two goals and three assists in a 5-0 win at Spurs ultimately leading to Andre Villas-Boas’ dismissal.

Whilst Suarez’ 13 double figure returns were indicative of his explosive potential, his level of consistency was equally impressive. Serving up a goal or assist in 27 of his 33 league starts for Liverpool, he was relentless in picking up the points and did not deliver back-to-back blanks all season.

Ending the campaign with 30 goals, 25 assists and 40 bonus points, Suarez’ produced 295 points in the FPL game – his incredible average of 8.9 points per game was far superior to the previous season’s top scorer, Robin Van Persie, who managed 6.9 ppg. Owned by over 51% of FPL managers by the time the campaign drew to a close, the Uruguayan finished 54 points ahead of second placed Yaya Toure and at least 90 points ahead of any team-mate in Rodgers’ free-scoring side.

The Prospects

In terms of price, Suarez will surely be the most expensive option on offer across the Fantasy games next time around. Most anticipate a shift between 13.0 and 14.0 in FPL – in fairness, a true reflection of the quality of his Fantasy performances – though such a high cost won’t deter those who feel that owning Suarez simply affords a peace of mind and takes away the hassle of selecting a captain in any given Gameweek.

For consistency of starts, Suarez has also been second-to-none amongst premium price options. He’s been named in the first XI in every league game he has been available for under Rodgers and, unlike Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Sergio Aguero and Daniel Sturridge, has only missed out through suspension. It’s a factor that is also in his favour when taking the Reds’ Champions League duties into consideration – Sturridge’s propensity for picking up knocks and niggles could potentially pose problems for his owners, given that he started only 15 of the final 27 Gameweeks due to injury last time round.

There’s a chance Suarez’ price rise may persuade others to consider more budget-friendly alternatives, though with Rodgers looking to strengthen further, Liverpool’s attack-minded style of play is always going to serve up chances aplenty. Going without the Uruguayan would be a risky tactic if he can maintain his momentum, though Suarez’ fitness will be keenly monitored over the summer after he underwent minor knee surgery yesterday, with fears it may have a knock-on effect on his pre-season sharpness.

Elsewhere in the premium bracket, whilst Aguero’s continual injuries will persuade many to steer clear, Louis Van Gaal’s arrival at United could bring Van Persie and Rooney into contention for those determined to overlook Suarez. Certainly, a lack of European action for the Old Trafford outfit suggests that there will be less requirement for rest and rotation, whilst a recent tactical change from 4-3-3 to 5-3-2 for Holland will harbour hopes that both Van Persie and Rooney will be handed central roles up top for United as the new man in charge aims for the title in his first season at the helm.

I doubt I'll be getting Suarez next season, he'll be far too pricey given the alternatives. Van Persie will be the highest FPL scorer imo, and buying Aguero would give perfect home/away rotation.

I think he will if he stays fit. We all know Kun won't stay fit and Pelli knows what he has in Dzeko. I think Dzeko will do well in the WC and will hopefully take that form over to FPL.

          Maybe I'm just a dreamer.

He wasn't called Luis Suarez in my (& probably everyones) ML. It was simply Captain Suarez lol

I had one team captain him give or take every GW (very boring, but ended up 5th in my ML)

Did Captain Suarez spoil FPL last year? No, end of day he was a player we all chose & captained. Yes, it took away the excitement of choosing a differential cap, but when the tools are available. Use em....

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

It doesn't take a time travel expert with a crystal ball to work out that Luis Suarez will be priced at 14m next season.

Given this price hike will he be worth it? Or will he turn out to be like RVP?

Can he maintain the same form next season? Or will it be better to get the cheaper Gerrard or Sturridge. After all for every Suarez assist or goal there's someone else getting points - with Gerrard and Sturridge in pole position to bnefit.

The amount of points Suarez scored last season has never happened before in FPL. The chances of that happening again in the subsequent year is surely very remote?

Unlike Suarez , I don't expect him to be injured. On the other hand for 14 he would need to score moreless every GW, or at least assist, which isn't so out of the question.

Before the CL kicks in definitely worth it, then I'd monitor. The CL vs. PL games might prove a problem for Liverpool. He also tends to be very frustrated if things don't go his way, so the pressure part of the CL is one to watch.

Will likely reduce the number of pens and free kicks if pool are not attacking as much due to fatigue/loss of form and also not having the time to work on set pieces moves due to frequency of games.

Sturridge will grow even more as a player, Sterling will grow even more but will have rotation to potentially fight off, especially if they get Lallana, who I think would be an extremely interesting candidate.

Selling Suarez about 6 weeks before the end was glorious, I missed out on pretty much nothing, I won't be going for him again unless he scores a hattrick and has amazing fixtures following it.

Hard to to predict. At anything like this years scoring the answer is a simple yes.

The big unknown is how Europe will impact on their play and Suarez scoring. If we accept that his (FPL record) score of 295 is unlikely to be repeated and that european football *may* impact slightly on his scoring then i think a score of 250+ would be the level we would probably want (or 7 ppg avg if playing 36 games) to see for our 14m

Personally I think its highly likely that there will be period when Suarez is definitely worth owning, but its unlikely that he will be a season keeper.

A lot depends on how this injury goes. If he makes it back for the world cup, he could nonetheless be exhausted come august. If he misses out, he will be fully fit and absolutely chomping at the bit when the league gets going.

I wouldn't pay 14mil for anything other than brilliant opening fixtures if he's just coming back from a cup run.

I think his one against Spurs was probably his best left footed one, got it out from under him and acorss the goal but i think the whole experience of completely bossing Utd at OT makes it my favourite. I think that right footed one has everything. Contol, skill, technigue. It's fantastic

Playing Ménez and Walcott the same time sounds suicidal, unless you plan to change Arsenal's tactics to ultra-defensive with just two-three guys lurking at limits of offside waiting for long passes to break the opposition on counter.

That would require a couple of other changes in the team as well. Like selling Özil, Cazorla, Arteta, Monreal, maybe Wilhsere and Giroud too, actually quite likely more than half the squad, plus Wenger and his staff that is committed to a very different style of football. Koscielny, Mertesacker and Flamini would adapt easily, though.

Deulofeu says goodbye to Everton fans

    --

    Dear Evertonians

I would like to thank Everton and all their fans for this year so special in my career. A new country, a new club, a new way of seeing, live and understand soccer.

I have grown as a soccer player, but also as a person and that is why I would like to thank every person that has helped and accompanied me on this journey.

The club and the manager for the great opportunity, my teammates for welcoming me and to the fans for the fantastic support.

I am proud and fulfilled with my year at Everton, having both helped the club and hoping that the fans enjoyed my football.

I wish Everton lots of luck and success in the future.

You will always be in my heart.

    Gerard Deulofeu.

    --

It now increasingly looks like Deulofeu will be back at the Nou Camp next season, especially now he has paid an emotional tribute to Everton and the fans.

Now that you speak of this, I would like to see the 4-2-3-1 with Cazorla-Cesc-Özil as the 3 (behind Giroud) at least once. Maybe with Ramsey and Flamini behind them, Ramsey bombing as box-to-box player and Flamini protecting the defence, allowing Aurier to bomb forward.

Yeah, super attacking, and probably very narrow in midfield with Cazorla, Özil and Cech, but at best that could really show some amazing football and break down even tightest of defences.

Cazorla isn't on the same level as Cesc or Ozil though, and that leaves Walcott, Arteta, Wilshere and Podolski all out of the side.

Cesc and Ozil with Caz supporting would be good to watch but no better than Cesc and Iniesta/Messi with Xavi supporting.

Yeah, at least when they were at their best. But have you watched those guys recently? If you were playing as well as Xavi and Iniesta are now, you would not have finished in top 4.

I tell you, Cesc with Özil and Cazorla would be better than he is now with Xavi and Iniesta. Cesc has difficulties in finding his role in that team and those two others no longer have what it takes to make it in top level. We think they're great, because two years ago they were, but they both had quite mediocre season. It already started last spring. Since 2012, neither one has shown anything that would allow to think they're amongst the top players of the world. If they hadn't made name for themselves before, we wouldn't even notice them and they would play for Almeria or Valladolid by now.

Cazorla is a top player. Willy, Wally, Pod and Arteta can be on bench for all that I care. You're not going to line up the same XI in every match anyway. That would be a highly skilled, team with 3 different kinds of AM's lined up, with all having more of these defence breaking skills and relying less on pace. If Arsenal played a team that parks a bus, the triad of Cazorla, Özil and Cesc, with Ramsey and Aurier bombing in support from behind, and Giroud to give the focal point in the box or at the edge of the box, playing layoffs for Cazorla, Ramsey and fellows to finish, I think that could work greatly.

Actually, Arsenal had very little problems in defeating these largely inferior teams this season. But I would still want to at least see how that combination would work. Just because it could look awesome.

I would say it's not really crazy he turns his back to Scotland if they almost deported his family, and if he doesn't want to play for Scotland, I have to agree with Smith that then he would also be very little use to the NT.

Instead, what an ungrateful little pr*ck to leave Celtic like that after what they did for him. Obviously, NT was there for their bit too, but I'm not all enthusiastic about people gaining nationality because of their football skills. Shouldn't be a factor.

What are the rules, if he already represented a country at youth levels, can he still opt for someone else, or does this effectively leave him out of int'l football, with that attitude, I do hope it does.

It says this in the article...

‘I don’t know what he is thinking now because, under the rules, he cannot play for any other Home Nation, so it’s not as if he can play for England.’

          Is that not right?

Aye I don't get it myself. Playing senior football with Scotland would be some experience. But good luck to him if he fancies attempting qualification with Somalia instead...

No. According to Home Nation rules, he cannot represent any other so called Home Nation, so no other British NT. But as uncapped on adult level, he could play for any "non home nation", so to say, primarily if he had the nationality before having represented Scotland. So, probably just Somalia. However, there are exceptions, usually only such that "if he perhaps could have had the nationality", i.e. if he descends from someone who had the nationality, say Obraniak whose grand father was Polish and so he got a Polish passport without having ever been to the country or knowing a word of the language, because they liked to have him in their NT.

But I don't know, maybe there could be other possible cases, as they are not so strict about youth international games anymore. Say, he joins Zenit and after having played in Russia for whole 5 years he appeals for nationality and gets it, I think there could be at least marginal case for him to represent Russia. Maybe the competitive youth international matches would prevent it, I'm not sure if Nenê played competitive youth internationals for Brazil, but I recall there was discussion in the press that he could have been eligible to play for France once, although none of the parties involved seemed to have much interest in this option.

Looks good... You also get 3 free transfers to use as soon as the first game kicks off and in every round. So, you might want to start with say, Benzema instead of Messi, then swap him out (after he's played) for Ronaldo, then swap him out for Messi, and finally, replace Ronaldo with Lukaku.

As long as you swap a player out after he's played, you get to keep the points that he scored, so you should have 14 players scoring for you each round unless injuries/suspensions take their toll on your team.

Our main rule is make sure newly transferred players are in your team at least 10 minutes before kick off (so our server registers it in time), this deadline still gives you plenty of time to check the team sheet before making a transfer.

With not much happening in the form of transfer news right now, lets hear who you realistically would want your favourite premier league team to sign.

    That ONE key signing.
