The Community Round Up

World Cup quarter-final team selections and the tournament’s heroes and villains have hogged the submissions and hot topics generated by the community this week. Back home, the launch of Sky Sports’ Fantasy Game was also discussed, as was the Premier League’s potential hot prospects and weakest links for the season ahead. We recall the key contributions from the community over the past week, whilst also dropping in on the current crop of World Cup tournaments and competitions.

The Community Articles

Preparation for the knockout stages and the weekend’s last eight of the World Cup were the major focus of this week’s submissions. Balotellis Bib was in fine form once again, guiding the community on the key squad selection decisions. He was on hand to look at the major lessons learnt from the group stages and last 16 ties, whilst also provideding this excellent guide to navigating the knockout rounds in the Official FIFA Fantasy game.

Another of our most prolific writers, Daniel Levy 16, also came forward to offer sound advice for those scanning for a bargain in the Official game. His rundown of the best budget goalkeepers and defenders and midfielders provided essential reading as the transfer window swung open.

Each month, we have a £20 Amazon voucher on offer to the author of the best community article as chosen by you. We will launch a Hot Topic to gather your votes and remind you of some of the best of June’s community articles on Monday. The winner will be revealed in next week’s Round-up.

The Hottest Topics

With just the semi finals and finals left to play, many of the World Cup’s heroes and villains have already made themselves known. In answer to Irish Madrista’s call to name the World Cup’s most sensational surprises, DonaldDuckSnr has been impressed with the performances of the Algerian, Costa Rican and Greek outfits, while Siva Mohan was among many to nominate Colombian pair James Rodriguez and Juan Cuadrado as the tournament’s surprise packages.

Meanwhile, Heydudes13’s hot topic explored the best prospects available at the back in the Official FIFA game, with Holland’s Stefan de Vrij earning special praise. Germany’s last 16 goal hero Andre Schurrle is a favourite of Willis and gained a special mention in our look ahead to the quarter finals clashes.

Elsewhere, Gnu and A SquishyPotato looked at the villainous bunch who have failed to live up to their pre-tournament billing. In Gnu’s assessment of the tournament’s biggest flops, Juan Carlos nominated the entire England team, while Ginkapo placed Spain’s squad at the top of the flop charts. Sheep, meanwhile gave a long list of World Cup 2014 failures, including Wayne Rooney, Leighton Baines and Eden Hazard. ASquishyPotato’s World Cup disappointment XI included Steven Gerrard, as well as Ecuador skipper and United winger, Antonia Valencia.

For DHWizzo the entire Brazil squad have been a let down. In one of the week’s most popular posts, he explained his argument for avoiding their assets in the closing rounds, particularly their suspect defence. For those wanting to find more evidence of World Cup heroics and villainy, Jared Mason’s excellent player statistics for the Official FIFA Fantasy game will prove interesting reading.

The community was also in nostalgic mood this week, taking time out to look back and name some of their favourite ever World Cup goals. Maradona’s second strike against England in the Mexico World Cup of 1986 was the top choice for Aaron Ramessi among others. Meanwhile, our resident quizmaster The Fantasy Freak, looked back fondly at Papa Bouba Diop’s shock winner against France in 2002.

Domestic football issues are creeping into the community’s thoughts and this week saw us assess the field of the new Premier League recruits. Evs and D1sable were among those to predict a successful Premier League return for Chelsea’s new midfielder and former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas. Sherlock Holmes, however, foresee’s a poor debut season for another new Chelsea arrival, Diego Costa.

This week also saw the early launch of the Sky Sports Game, which, this season, includes the addition of a new 3-4-3 formation, along with at testing player price list. Croatia Deserves More Mata and Zepinho were among those to find the player values restrictive. Gigging Order, who topped the Sky component of last season’s Iron Man community tournament, stated that, given the tough pricing, 3-5-2 may well be the formation of choice.

Finally, Irish Madridsta started one of our longest ever discussion threads when he asked for the community’s favourite movie-title and footballer crossovers. There followed an epic multi-page run of some of the most ludicrous movie based puns around, with Applebonkers’ The Quantum of Rod Wallace, Billy Gilmore’s Finding Neymar and Bubz’s 2001 A Space Odemwingie among the many highlights from more than a dozen pages of cinematic word play. The puns flowed at such a rate that The Fantasy Freak even had to abandon his regular pre-match quiz.

The Community Tournaments

Following the quarter final matches an impressive 22 of our Fox league members are in the top 50 of the overall rankings. With 425 points our league leader, Alba Esque, is third overall. Arvin United leads the Fox FFS Deadzone league, while Roscola continues to dominate the Fox moderators and contributors league.

Ceac90 tops the Scout League in the McDonald’s backed Official World Cup game: he also sits fifth in the overall ranks, just five points off the summit.

Thinking of going big in def for McD's if I've got any chance of a top ten finish:

    Neuer (Cillessen)
Hummels Boateng Hoewedes Dante Luiz (Rojo De Vrij)

    Playing 5-4-1 w Muller Depay/ Kuyt

    Thoughts?

      I'm playing 5/4/1 as well
Neuer, Hummels, Boateng, Hoewdes, DeVrij, Blind (Rojo)
      Mueller and Robben up front
If Mueller has a great game I'll go 5/3/2
If he has a bad game I'll switch him for Robben and stay 5/4/1
      Midfield almost irrelevant re: points

Fernandinho looked much better playing alongside Paulinho last game than he did with LG two games ago. With LG back in which Fernandinho will we see? Is his positioning and license to move forward any different now? Was Paulinho going forward more with Fernandinho sitting a bit deeper and this explained why he had such a good points haul last game - and if so - will it revert back to him having a crap game fouling everyone again as he did when he came in with LG?

I'd have to change the whole team to fit him in and he may well get rested for Champions League games at some point given the strength in depth Chelsea have in midfield now...

Also I find him to be very hit and miss, goes through really good patches and then doesn't do anything for a while.

That's a good team, not sure why I completely forgot about Mannone and he's actually pretty cheap.

Was looking at Hoillet and Arnautovic as well.

My only concern with Ramsey is the abundance of midfielders Arsenal have and the chance that he may get rested for Champions League games.

Davies is also a good shout, not sure if I'd want a Burnley defender, they have some pretty tough opening fixtures.

I agree about Burnley having some tough fixtures, but you have to go cheap somewhere, and since defenders get the least amount of points, it has to be there for me...

I'm just hoping he can pitch it with a few of those assists he's known for...

If Vorm leaves, Fabianski is a steal at 3.6m...

I don't think it's wise to completely overlook players just because you're afraid they might get rested for CL games... but yes it is a concern, same for everyone though...

I know but I have Sterling who might get rested for the same reason and given that there aren't any subs in the Sky game I don't really want to take the same gamble on another player as well.

The thing about Sterling is, his rests aren't solely based around CL...

Perhaps but given how good he looked at the end of last season and with Suarez leaving, I'm not sure Rodgers can afford to leave him out.

I don't think you can rely on last seasons minutes to predict this season as he's matured enough for Rogers to trust him with more game time.

    Cillesen
Luiz, Hummels, Boateng, Garay, De Vrij, Blind,

Lovely. Looks eerily similar to one of my drafts though expected at this point!

I'd probably go with just the first 5 midfielders though and use the Wilj money to upgrade Blind to Dante. I'd almost rather more people playing in the first game so I have a chance to get them out if they bust.

Get rid of Wijnaldium like Aaron said. I think you've gone too Mid - heavy, but that's just my opinion. I have only 4 Mids. Find a way to get Messi in, by downgrading your midfield.

I also would rather have Rojo than Blind.

im rly not sure about mueller -> messi if i'm only going for only 2 strikers, with robben already in. it's a toss up between them imho, because going both doesn't give any leeway to change to a 1-striker system if it goes tits-up in the second game.

        good point on wij though

Hmm think Oscar's going to be they're main man now. And Brazil won't be playing great attacking football with Neymar, gonna be really aggressive, hopefully that means the whole team's working harder and more defensive points. At least that's my thinking.

Don't really fancy Neuer vs a muted Brazilian attack over Romero vs Netherlands. But could work. mmmmm

        Nah. Muller's my man. 😉

My thoughts are that it needs another defender. Also I know most are going with 3 strikers but I personally think the two striker approach with one striker on each day is the best method and play either a 5-4-1 pr 5-3-2 depending on what Muller/Schurrle does on the first day

Having said that its quite tough to pick between Messi and Robben

But if Muller fails, I can bring in either Messi/Robben for him.

Formation doesn't really matter tbh, depends on how well your players perform and which players.

Which is why I have both 😉

If I downgrade anyone, it'd be Oscar. And if so I would only have enough cash to get someone like Blind. Don't really see the point in getting him tbh. Unless I downgrade Oscar to a 1m/2m and I get Mertesacker? That could work.

Think it's going to be Dante. At least that's what I've come up with after some googling. But, I'm just sticking with Luiz.

Yeah, I'll have Luiz too, but I guess whoever comes in will be a relative differential, since everyone will have almost the same team...

Morning folks. In MacDees - This is not final but...

    Cillessen
Hummels - Mertesacker/Howedes - Boateng - Luiz (Rojo, De Vrij)
Lahm - Kroos - Gustavo (Sneijder, Mascherano)
    Muller - Robben

    What d'ya think?

      Howedes will start....Merte won't

      I like Fernandinho over Gustavo

Kroos ----> 1m and 1m ----> Muller/Schurrle - for explosiveness...I would suggest Schweinsteiger over Kroos if you want more secure points

And how is Schweinstager "safer" than Kroos?

Schweinsteiger got 8 without an assist and got a yellow card....
Kroos got 8 with an assist...

ie. Schweinsteiger has a higher floor, but Kroos has a higher ceiling

Fernandinho has got 8 and 9 in the two games he has started...looks consistent

fair enough on Kroos/Schweini...as I explained to keepergirl

well he is 0.5 cheaper and has got consistent points...but there probably wont be much of a difference between them...

you don't prefer getting a third striker?

Mid and Def points is where it's at!!

It was a choice out of Messi and Robben who play each other and this draft could only afford Robben.

If Muller does well, I can still bring in Robben for a misfiring Mid.

            Still undecided though...

Ummmm...almost exactly my team! Great minds think alike.
Only difference is I have Neuer and Blind in a 5/4/1 instead of Cillessen and Luiz in a ?4/4/2.
Just don't see a CS for Netherlands .
Neuer is a god and it's hard for a keeper not to select him
But would really, really love to have Luiz

I can't justify spending 7m on a keeper, when I can get one for 3m...

Cillessen may not keep a CS, but he will make up for that with more saves against a better more attacking team...

IMO, there is absolutely no way that Neuer will outscore him by 230%

If Cillessen gets 7pts then that is still better value than 16 from Neuer...

You might argue that, but thats still misguided logic in my mind..
The game is about picking the team that will score most points total - not points per million spend per player... 7 vs 16 points is a huge difference in this game..an extra player.
What im saying is: If Cillesen gets 7, and Neur 16 points(And I knew this) - Id rather pay for Neur and save elsewhere...
That being said Im going for Cillesen as I dont think the diff will be that big...

        Ok. So last round:
        Neuer, Blind, Sneijder 31 points
        Cillessen, Luiz, Sneijder 27 points
So think I will just stick with what I've got
All this finessing is making my head hurt and in the end which lineup does best, among the many good options on this forum, will come down to luck
        Here's hoping I have some

Only problem with that is that the Dutch were up against Costa Rica, who had one shot on target... I guarantee the Argies will have more = more saves and more points for Cillessen...

Without a CS, Blind isn't worth it either... very poor scoring from him...

What formation is everyone going to play in Fox? There doesn't seem to be enough money for a decent 3-4-3 or 3-5-2. I'm thinking of doing either a 3-4-3 with Depay as one of the forwards or a 4-4-2.

Really? I might consider that if defenders actually had a good chance at bonus points. It's been almost exclusively keepers and attacking players so far.

Probably 4-3-3 or 3-4-3. The problem with going with just 1 or 2 strikers is that your 3rd striker that you won't play is gonna be using up some of your budget since there are no cheap strikers left...

That's true. But Higuan, Fred an the like still command about the same price premium over a non-playing striker (or really Depay, since he plays), as Sneijder, Kroos, Ozil and the like do over a non-playing mid.
