The Community Round Up

Last week’s launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game caused a wave of excitement as our community competed for low user IDs, discovered player prices and quickly set up their first draft teams. As you’d expect, we’ve been overwhelmed by the number of community articles and hot topics generated by the new game, while many FPL managers have also set up new leagues for the season ahead- read on to discover how to join up:

The Community Articles

With the paint barely dry on the first draft teams to emerge from the FPL launch, community writer Christina was already considering radical changes in his assessment of the best time to wildcard.

Getting the best of the new crop of players is key every year and The Puntmaster has been compiling another handy pre-season spreadsheet to assess the newcomers’ prospects. You can read his guide (which is updated as and when new players are signed) and grab the link to the spreadsheet here.

Amongst the most talked about new players is Southampton’s new winger and set-piece specialist Dusan Tadic, who joins on the back of 16 goals and 14 assists for FC Twente. Bowstring the Trout was on hand to run the rule over his prospects and assess how he will fit into the south coast side’s 2014/15 set-up.

Need to read up on Burnley’s prospects for the season ahead? Clarets fan Saint Steve-O offered this analysis of the Lancashire side’s squad, looking at Sean Dyche’s potential line up and tactics upon their return to the top-flight.

The release of the FPL game affords Fantasy managers a better idea of the budget options in defence, allowing us to assess the best cut-price partnerships for the season ahead. Lanley Staural’s rotation analysis warns against basing decisions mainly on home and away fixtures, though – his alternative view on rotation urges Fantasy mangers to look closely at the quality of the opposition rather than where the game is played.

Hottest Topics

When the FPL game began updating on Wednesday morning ahead of its mid-afternoon launch, our community members had some tough decisions on their hands.

Giggs Boson ignored a fire alarm at work, Epicfail put off the call of nature due to limited Wi-Fi access in his smallest room and Grim Reaper refused to answer the phone at work.

Another reason for logging into FPL swiftly after launch was to grab a low user ID. The Missing Link offered key tips on how to achieve this and, following the launch, it was clear many had listened- HeyDudes13 nabbed the impressively low ID of 12.

Rate My Teams for the FPL game have been posted thick and fast over the last few days and prompted some excellent discussions on formation and player selection. This includes Arsenal’s Number 19 Santi Cazorla’s look at the wealth of options in the Arsenal Midfield, as Fantasy managers weigh up the Gunners’ options in the centre of the park.

For Lionel’s Messi Boxers, Stoke midfield duo of Peter Odemwingie and Marko Arnautovic presents managers with another important choice to make when tapping into the Potters’ kind early fixtures.

Elsewhere, for those new to the site, Innsie’s guide on posting the perfect RMT and asking for help will be essential reading.

Among the key changes in 2014/15 in all Fantasy games is the wealth of credible new options in attack, with Chelsea and Arsenal among those to significantly strengthen in this area. Granville predicts that many FPL teams in particular will be flooded with new players.

As well as the launch of FPL, the Premier League also rolled out its Ultimate Fantasy Premier League game, which requires more hands on management during each Gameweek. Analysing the fixture list and assessing which players can be swapped in on Sundays and Mondays is crucial to success, according to Tommy Tour’s excellent guide to the UFPL Sunday and Monday clubs.

Our resident Sky Sports Fantasy game expert D1sable was also on hand to offer his pearls of wisdom on how to succeed.

Whichever Fantasy game you are playing, clean sheets, assists and goals remain key. In our discussion on which players and teams will gain the most points from these key attributes, Siva Mohan predicts Cesc Fabregas will be the top assister, while Captain Jack and Billy Gilmore were among those who see another prolific season for Daniel Sturridge. Chelsea was the popular choice in terms of most clean sheets, although The Missing Yobo believes Tottenham could be in the running for that accolade after new boss Mauricio Pochettino helped Southampton to 15 shut-outs last time around.

Finally, MJ6987’s hot topic, which asked the community to vote on costly FPL picks against cheaper alternatives from the same teams was a popular shout. The Eden Hazard v Cesc Fabregas, Alexis Sanchez v Aaron Ramsey and Robin van Persie v Wayne Rooney debates were amongst the subjects up for discussion, with some intriguing results polled.

The Community Tournaments

Already a raft of community leagues have been created in the FPL game. Blue Lion has set up his “So You think You are Smarter Than a Casual” league (429-5287), while Messimerized has two leagues in FPL, his self-titled open to all league (26-630) and his Official Deadzone League (26-631), for those who visit Fantasy Football Scout overnight. Deadzoners are also invited to enter Innsie’s H2H Graveyard Shift league (10934-12169).

For those Fantasy managers that like to take a risk with their transfers Arvin-ation has set up a FFS Punters league (37064-16263).

The elite Fantasy managers who have notched up at least one Top 1000 rank finish can once again join PDM’s Top 1000 League ANY Season (16542-5955). The last five winners of this prestigious league are Pocky, Gareth Rees, Tom Pearson, Evs and Loz Sutty.

Meanwhile, RoysCallerAnne’s FFS Old Farts Club league (2475 1316) is once again open to those in the community who are 35 years old or over.

Jovetic would likely play in the hole with Dzeko leading the line, I suspect. He can also play wide.

Dzeko is a star - he has proven he can just stroll off the bench and still justify his price tag. I don't think he's a captain option but he is guaranteed minutes, is good for 13+ goals a season and especially with Negredo out he is a massive lock! Get him in

    Absolutely torn...
    A) Ozil, Nasri, Fab, Sturridge and Giroud... no United cover

    B) Sanchez, Nasri, Haz, Sturridge and Jelavic... still no united cover

    C) Sanchez, Tadic, Haz, RVP, Jelavic.

    Original was C...
then went B because I wanted Nasri
Now A because I want ultimate balance in the forward line -

    anyone care to help?

    Cheers lads!

    RMT please

    Krul / Mannone
    Azpil / Vermaelen / Debuchy / Davies / Cameron
    Ramsey / Eriksen / Tadic / DeJong / Albrighton
    Sturridge / Dzeko / Bony

The 2 major items for discussion, and about which I'm still undecided:

    1. The wisdom of 3 middle tier MFs - I believe that's where the value is
    2. No MU or CHE attacking players - I'd like to see the roles emerge

    Thoughts?

No it's 50/50, depends on each player. Hardly the most adventurous of full-backs though so Terry/Cahill are the go-to guys for Chelsea imo.

Having responded to quite a few RMT's here is my version, dependant upon defenders being likely to start.........

    Mannone, 4m
    Debuchy, Vermaelen, Cameron, Mariappa, 4m
    Hazard, Ramsay, Mata, Eriksen, 4.5m
    Rooney, Dzeko, Giroud

Can't decide between Mata and Silva atm.

Hello guys, this is a repost of a previous post updated with the latest changes. Could you please share your thoughts on them?

    De Gea (Myhill)
Vermaelen - Cahill - Huth (Mariappa - Bruce)
Sánchez - Fàbregas - Eriksen - Sigurdsson (Albrighton)
    Rooney - Giroud - Bony

This first one is assuming Vermaelen goes to MUtd and Sigurdsson goes to Swansea. I like MUts' early fixtures for defensive returns, as well as a the 1 Chelsea defender i think may be nailed on. Also has Bony and Giroud which have good opening fixtures, and Eriksen and Sigurdsson offer relatively cheap but also regularly scoring midfiled options.

The second one I feel is a bit lightweight on Forwards and Defence, but on the other hand offers more punch in midfield with the addition of Ramsey. I might change Jones to Vermanelen and downgrade Chiriches to Vlaar if he goes to Southampton to get save some money.

    Courtois (Myhill)
Jones - Chiriches - Huth (Mariappa - Bruce)
Sánchez - Fàbregas - Eriksen - Ramsey (Albrighton)
    Rooney - Giroud - Jelavic

I would very much appreciate your comments!

Like the first effort a lot - very close to my latest squad. Had shyed away from Bony as I think Swansea might struggle, but Siggy's probable arrival should help. I'm currently on Dzeko, but not 100% comfortable with that either.

Not sure either Jones or Chirches will be nailed on, but nice choices if they are. Would favour DDG (probably more save points) & Luis instead of Courtois/Jones.

Would love some thoughts from you folks!

    Begovic - Myhill
    Azpi - Debuchy - Vermaelen(MUN) - Wisdom - Mariappa
    Hazard - Arnie - Ramsey - Eriksen - Wanyama
    RvP - Dzeko - Jellie

    1.0 in the bank.

    My personal thoughts:
GK: Begovic or DDG? I'm assuming Vermaelen goes to MUN so I get a cheaper option in defense for MUN coverage.

DEF: Azpi is nailed on? Or should I be putting Luis in instead? Other than that, I'm basically going for the cheapest options available to get CHE - ARS - MUN coverage for the initial games.

MID: Sanchez or Ramsey? Tough to answer, don't have the answer. Hazard or Fabregas? That one is abit easier. Leaning on Hazard because on pens, plus more attacking and we aren't sure of Mou's plans for Fabregas. Is Arnie the right mid price mid? Or should I be going for De Jong?

FWD: RvP or Rooney? Tough one. Leaning to RvP because LVG seems to dislike Rooney. Dzeko should be nailed on now and is Jellie the best option at 6.0?

Dr. Rog approach to structuring a team

As far as im concerned start with the premium assets and work backwards. Sanchez, Haz & RVP are all essential as they are they are the standout captain choices from the top teams with the strongest fixtures. Whatsmore, not having them is suboptimal as captaincy points are doubled and you need premium players in your team such that you have the flexibility to be able to jump onto bandwagons when they arise in the first few weeks (they are quite binary too).

In defence most will want similar premium +good fxture coverage in 2 slots (say debuchy & verm or some variant), 2* 9m GK & def rotation pair and a budget 4m benchwarmer. Likewise, a 4.5m benchwarmer in mid or fwd position makes sense. After that, team structure must ensure there is at least 1 9m mid and 1 8.5m striker (due to the number of options in both slots making it very difficult to bandwagon onto one).

    9
    5.5, 5, 9, 4
    10.5, 10, 9, x, 4.5
    12.5, 8.5, x

This leaves x=12.5m. Most people have some variant on this structure:
1: A big front 6, doing this means a weak 7th foward that must be played week in week out or rotated with the 8th fwd.
    a) Strong 4th mid: 8m e.g. Eriksen.
    b) Strong 3rd striker: Opting for another 8.5 option, and shaving 0.5m more out of the defence.
    2) Completing the front 7: e.g. something like Siggy+Jelly, or Arny+Shelvey (with 4.5 striker upfront).
    3) Going for less premium captaincy choices (Rambo/Fab/Rooney) to spread more cash around the team.
    4) Opting for Costa instead of Hazard however, the arguments 1 & 2 still apply.
    5) Uber the defence, which this year is tough due to a lack of 4s. I think you could shave another 1.5m off the above which isnt really going to buy a great deal to compensate you.

For me, Im currently stuck with 2, which leads to the most balance. Its not really an option to have a weak 7th mid in my book.

you have 8 fwds in the game (5 mids, 3 fwds) and the max you can play is 7th. as generally the points are in the front positions, most opt for 3 at the back (343 or 352).

"Cleverley talks up his rival but the hope was that the Englishman would be the kind of box-to-box midfielder that Herrera is. “Ander is definitely a United player, I could tell that by playing against him the couple of times I have done. He passes, he moves and is a clever player. He is someone who I think I will enjoy playing with.”"

Lol. What he means is Herrera is someone who he will enjoy watch playing for ManU in his stead.

    De Gea / 4m

    Debuchy, Cahill, Davies, Wisdom, Mariappa

    Mata, Fabregas, Ramsay, Siggy, 4.5m

    Giroud, Rooney, Dzeko

Slight concern over not having 10.5 big hitter in midfield. However plan b would be to downgrade a Striker to a 5.5 / 6.0 striker If Sanchez, RVP or Hazard etc explode in the opening weeks.

Very happy with the balance though.
