Moving Target

Moving Target – Steven Caulker

Just five days after signing Rio Ferdinand on a free transfer, Harry Redknapp continued to strengthen his back line for the season ahead with the acquisition of Steven Caulker from relegated Cardiff City.

Joining up on a four-year contract, the 22-year-old admitted that the presence of his former Spurs boss and the arrival of the veteran centre-half were both key to his decision:

“I am very excited to be here. It was important for me to be back playing in the Premier League, and Harry Redknapp has given me the opportunity to be at this fantastic club. Harry was a big factor for me, having worked with him at Tottenham. He was very keen for me to join and that was a big plus, knowing the manager wants you. Being able to play with Rio was also a big draw. He has been a role model of mine for many years, along with Ledley King. To have the opportunity to play alongside him was something I felt I couldn’t miss out on. Our first aim this season has to be to get to 40 points, to make sure we stay up. That’s our first goal.”

The History

A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Caulker’s career got underway in 2009/10, when he played 44 times on loan at Yeovil Town. The centre-half was again farmed out to a lower league club the following season, scoring twice in 29 matches for Bristol City, before making his way to Swansea in a year-long loan deal in 2011/12.

Under the guidance of then-manager Brendan Rodgers, Caulker featured on 26 occasions for the Premier League outfit, with only a knee injury curtailing his game time. Retained by his parent club for the following season, he failed to nail down a regular role and, after making just 18 appearances under Andre Villas-Boas, was sold to Cardiff City last summer.

Nailed-on for The Bluebirds, Caulker was the only defender to play all 38 league matches in last term’s top-flight and his aerial threat in the opposition box saw him score on five occasions; only Martin Skrtel and Seamus Coleman, with seven and six respectively, registered more.

On the international stage, Caulker has turned out 21 times for England youth teams and found the net twice. Despite scoring on his debut for the senior side back in 2012, he has yet to feature for the Three Lions since.

The Prospects

Having watched his side muster a mere nine clean sheets at home in 23 Championship matches last season, it’s no surprise to see Redknapp strengthen at the back as he attempts to keep the R’s afloat. Ferdinand’s experience and leadership qualities, allied with the agile Caulker’s threat in the opposition box, suggest QPR have every reason to approach the upcoming campaign with increased optimism.

Redknapp – who handed Caulker his Spurs debut – lavished praise upon the new boy after the deal was confirmed by the club’s official website:

“Steven’s a top player, so we’re delighted to have him at QPR. I know the ability he has and I think it’s an important signing for the club – for the here and now, and for the future. I had him at Tottenham and I was very surprised when they decided to let him go last summer, because I thought he had a big future there. He’s young; he’s a good age; he’s already a fine player but he has so much more potential – it’s a really excellent signing for the club. When good players like Steven become available, who can come in and have a real impact, you’ve got to try and get them. I’m sure he will come in and show exactly what he’s capable of – he’s got everything to be a top, top centre-half, so I couldn’t be more pleased to have him.”

Barring injuries, the Caulker-Ferdinand partnership looks set to be rolled out for the entirety of the 2014/15, leaving the likes of Richard Dunne and Clint Hill as no more than bench-warmers. Coming in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game, Caulker’s extra goal threat makes him the most expensive option amongst Redknapp’s backline but, as his heroics for Cardiff showed last term, he’s more than capable of justifying the extra outlay. With 19 bonus points accrued, he ended the previous campaign on 122 points – 15th amongst defenders – despite the Bluebirds mustering a mere seven clean sheets and conceding on 74 occasions.

The only real issue is that Caulker’s attacking potential makes him difficult to bench and trickier to play the fixtures – two of those five goals arrived on the road last time around. Bearing in mind that QPR rotate home/away with Palace for 34 of the 38 Gameweeks, some will perhaps turn to the cheaper Ferdinand, at 4.5, as a more budget-friendly option to dovetail with the Eagles. Such a pairing would hand you eight kind home fixtures (HUL, WHM, SUN, BUR, STO, LEI, AVL, SUN) in the first 10 rounds of matches, for example.

Further analysis of last season’s stats, however, underline Caulker’s capabilities and strengthen his case for consideration. He had more touches inside the opposition box (116) than any other defender and, as a result, was also top for attempts in the area (32) amongst backline options. If Ferdinand can help bolster resilience at the back, then, a 5.0 price tag could prove excellent value for his new central defensive partner.

Giroud or Dzeko? Already have Sanchez for Arsenal cover, no city cover but not a big fan of Dzeko. Other forwards are Rooney and Pelle...

Giroud could get more chances with Sanchez on the pitch. But looking at Dzeko I consider him a better option, settled team, better fixtures out of the gate.

Giroud is Arsenal's only decent striker, Sanchez will play on the wing.
Dzeko can be rotated with Jovetic and Pellegrini can play with an extra midfielder behind Aguero...

It does some weird thing that gives you a score that takes into account the vice captains score considering the chance that your captain doesn't play.

What are we thinking of Soldado this season? I'm looking at it thinking West Ham are having a shocking pre-season and then Spurs are at home to QPR -- if he scores in both it might give him the the confidence to revert back to the form he was in for many seasons before coming to Spurs. Almost guaranteed to start unless someone else is brought in, Lamela and Eriksen behind him are finding their feet, spot kick taker...

Since 2008 he is a goal ever 2 games type of player.

He has it in him. I think Tottenham have to play more to his style as his skill set isnt too adaptable.

It all depends on who Poch favours to lead the line early in the year.

Negredo > Soldado hence City purchased him

Looking at Southampton's style last season i'd say Kane has as much of a shot as Soldado of doing well this season

Why would you need to gamble on someone like Soldado though? There are plenty more secure options in and around that price bracket, who aren't such a roll of the dice.

I'd like spurs cover for the start myself, pochettino hit the ground running with southampton i remember, but eriksen is as far as i'm going.

What are the other secure options out of interest? The viable ones I see are Pelle (who I'm already taking a punt on because of the fixtures), Remy, Dzeko and Giroud.

Remy is even more likely to start now that Lallana is injured, but Liverpool have so many goal threats that they're not likely to play "pass the ball to Remy" like Newcastle did.

Giroud has a proven record and plenty of people to feed him but I feel that, more and more, the gunners are just going to start assisting anyone and everyone. If anything, even though their squad has improved I can see others scoring the goals that Giroud did this season (though he will still be high for assists). Fixtures aren't that great early on either, some tough games in there and I already have Sanchez.

Dzeko I absolutely love as a person and a player. I think he should start every game... hell, I just really rate him. But I've had him so many times in the past that he's either astonishing... or he doesn't play. Worse, he's brought on as a sub a lot which means I don't even get the benefit of a bench player rotating on. This would be the biggest no brainer if he was going to start every game for the first 13 games. Bloody City and their abundance of good players.

I went for 5M Harry Kane - might get less pitch time but more likely to stick it in the ol' onion bag than Soldado.

I think Ade will start. Soldado just lacks the pace to really do it in the premier league. I think he will improve, but would have worked out better if he had come to the prem earlier in his career. I think Eriksen is the best Spurs choice, but keep an eye on Lamela, he may adapt well this season.

Who do people think the best Chelsea defender to own is?

I'm currently on Cahill because I think he has the least likelihood of rotation (he's much younger than Terry, so less likely to get too fatigued, and they have many full back options) - but then I think for the same money I can have Terry who is much more of a goal threat and more likely to get bonus points or I can save money and get in Luis, but is he nailed? It's really tough for me! What Chelsea defenders does everyone else have? Cheers 🙂

Its a tough call. Every option has good defensive cover and could be prone to rotation.

I would think Luis is probably to most nailed on if he performs well. While both Terry and Cahill would be just under in nailed-on-ed-ness with greater goal threat.

    or
    Dann + Hoilett + Siggy

....given that 1 from each trio will almost always be benched.

had the first lot, mariappa doesn't seem to be starting preseason, and i suddenly felt the need to have an option to rotate with arnautovic, rather than have him as my 4th starter midfielder in a 3-4-3.

Is it worth the extra 0.5 for hoilett, just to have an option?

You need to balance it out a bit more

I've been playing this game for about 8 years, and this year's pricing is just utterly broken.

    Speroni, Green
    Cahill, Shaw, Davies, Colocini, Targett
    Hazard, Ramsey, Erikson, Sigurdsson, JWP
    Rooney, Dzeko, Remy

I know that people will say that a lot of players have moved, but that's not unique to this year. The problem is that those players were generously priced to begin with, so they're even more of a bargain when they move. The top players are also too low, and so you end up being able to get full coverage of all the big teams right from the start, instead of having to wait until perhaps halfway through the season. There's no challenge. The knock-on effect is that punts become pointless and the whole game gets a bit dull. I'd say that about half the players are priced 0.5m too low compared to times of yore.

Anyone else agree t hat there'e been some dumbing down of prices this year/

You may be onto something here. It's also because of last season's best player left the league and many of other big fishes had a bad season. It's hard to point many players who had a great last season AND the season or two before it. That's why it's hard to price them higher.

But no Sanchez, Yaya, Sturridge, RvP or Aguero. Possibly the potentially biggest scorers. Remy who probably won be first choice, Dzeko a rotation risk, etc etc

No, you should be able to afford that team, because it's not good.

If you want to get a lot of points, then you want to get the top scorinh players, which would mean you need to find the cheapies and good punts to accomodate the big hitters.

Only Siggy is obviously underpriced imo.

Prices are too low I agree but on the flip side there is a wider variety of choice eg I don't have one of RVP Sturridge Costa Ramsey Fabregas Sanchez Yaya Baines which could all dent my prospects!

I kind of agree in that it does level the playing field to the point that you can just try and pick the highest scoring players without worrying about price. biut finding cheap gems is half the fun of the game IMO.

I agree that pricing appears to be slightly more lenient than in the past... but without knowing exactly how the season will pan out in terms of points scoring, it's impossible to know for sure...

There will still be a challenge in terms of finding the right balance within the squad early doors...

And a potential negative knock-on effect of this so called 'fair pricing' could manifest itself when we start feeling compelled to use up the extra team value it generates just for the sake of it, even though the form players are actually cheaper players...

Just a few scenarios that come to mind...

Everyone is still forced into making tough decisions, Hazard or Fabregas, Sanchez or Ramsey, RvP or Rooney. Owning or not owning the right one could be massive and having 'cover' of all the big teams might not be enough if certain players underperform and others excel.

I kind of agree. All those 9.0m midfielders should be 9.5. Rooney is very cheap as is Hazard. However it's also more difficult as there are so many more options in each positions it's impossible to have all the players you want. Easy to have a strong team, but there will also be lots of variation between teams.

completely agree, 100%. For the first time in yeasr, i found it very easy to draft a team that is strong throughout. i've 9 starters from clubs who will contend CL places, a solid GK pairing, and decnets options on the bench.

i've hardly changed a thing from my first draft a couple of weeks back.

It has been too easy to build a team this year.

Okay so I based my GK and Defense on the Rate my Team Tool and I came up with these players. Chose theses ones because according to the Tool the value of these players will go up

    Mannone / Krul

    Debuchy Davies O'shea Coloccini Wisdom

Would like an opinion. Trying to spend a lot on defense since there are so many good and a bit pricey options for Mid/Attack.

Debuchy and Davies will likely be my safe bets, and the other ones will rotate according to their fixtures
