The Community Round Up

With less than a fortnight to go before the big kick-off, Fantasy managers and our community writers and posters are continuing their mission in search of quality budget options and prosperous heavy-hitters, whilst sifting the crop of new top-flight talent.

We look back to soak up the highlights of the week’s community submissions and drop in on the key Hot Topics to contemplate Southampton’s exodus, the potential starting XIs and the case to select a certain Manchester City full-back.

The Community Articles

The community section is simmering nicely as we near that August 16 deadline, with rotations and predicted teamsheets earning some keen interest over the past week.

ForzaInter was the latest community writer to tackle the issue of defensive rotation, putting forward a compelling new angle. His strategy is to focus on heavy-hitting, premium defenders from top sides and supplement them with a cheap defensive pair that can drop in when tricky fixtures rear their heads.

Defence was also the focus of Bowstring The Trout’s budget balancing article in which he lays out some furtehr cheap rotation options, in addition to a handful of mid-priced stoppers.

Meanwhile, The Puntmaster returned with another of his excellent player analysis updates focusing on the new arrivals to the Premier League. This time around he presented a useful summary of the key acquisitions to this point, including links to his new player spreadsheets, which will be particularly helpful to those catching up on his series of must-read updates.

Saniul, is another community writer who has been compiling a series of illuminating spreadsheet analysi. He’s focused his attentions on the potential starting XIs, based on the latest injury, transfer and friendly fixture news and events.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some pre-season analysis or lengthy opinions and foresight to share, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

While I was away on my family holidays this week, Fantasy Football Scout’s moderators and contributors kindly stepped up to take over our daily Hot Topics, covering a range of issues from differentials, to the continuing quest for individuality as we seek to avoid the template team.

Mark posed a pair of differing posers during the week, firstly asking how many new players to the Premier League we will be considering and just how far we should go with our punts on the likes of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Chelsea’s Diego Costa?

Meanwhile, Mark also chirped up to ask whether Fantasy managers are being duped into a defensive template by the recent transfers involving the likes of Ben Davies, Dejan Lovren and Andre Wisdom.

Manchester City was a focus for moderators Spencer and Applebonkers’s Hot Topic contributions. Spencer pondered just how much the World Cup will affect the pitch time of those players involved in the latter stages of the tournament, with Sergio Aguero a particular concern.

Ironically, one of those players who could well benefit from late returning World Cup players is the much-maligned Aleks Kolorov. Applebonkers asked whether the defender, who is often referred to as ‘Lolorov’ due to his bandwagaon cameos and frustrating knack of letting us down, could be in for a sensational early start to the campaign. Applebonkers certainly volunteered some compelling statistics to back up investment in the Serbian. Personally, I think this is a blatant attempt to lure Mark into the Kolarov honey trap from the get-go.

Elsewhere, the community’s most experienced Fantasy managers such as Triggerlips and Rasping Drive, were quick to respond to moderator Athletico Timbo’s excellent Hot topic asking for the top tips for success. Efficient short-term planning and watching as many games as possible, were among Rasping Drive’s nuggets of advice. Meanwhile, in a separate Hot Topic, Triggerlips wondered, with so many unknowns in the game, whether Fantasy managers would be better off carrying out minimal planning and seeing how the early season unfolds.

Another experienced campaigner, Torres Magic, also helped out with our daily Hot Topics. His focus was on differential players and proved one of our most discussed posts of the week. Inspired by this thread, Squeaky Bum Time decided to look specifically at some of the best mid-priced differentials available in the Fantasy Premier League game.

While holidaying in Hampshire, the local news inspired my first Hot topic on my return, as I pondered the fate awaiting Southampton following the exodus of their crown jewels in July. Some of the responses demonstrated faith in their remaining players to step up and replace the likes of Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw. Among those who could be destined for a great season is young full-back Matt Targett. Be sure to check on Lucy’s thorough analysis of his prospects here.

While investing in Targett and other Southampton players could be a risk, there was a cast of more reliable sources discussed this week.

Arsenal’s rejuvenated midfielder, Aaron Ramsey, stands out in particular according to the aptly named Aaron Ramessi, who predicts another stellar season for the clinical Welsh playmaker. Elsewhere, Beavis nominated Romelu Lukaku as an asset who could offer us a decent level of assurance, while Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas is said to be another dependable points scorer, particularly before January, if Dandec’s analysis rings true.

Finally, Innsie was on hand to provide this excellent summary of all the key questions during the week, including the demise of Southampton’s squad and the conundrum surrounding Chelsea’s tempting defensive assets.

The Community Tournaments

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing is returning for the 2014/14 Fantasy Premier League season. The code to join is 52587-7172.

Xward has also set up an open FPL league, called “Naughty Filthy Punters” (3079-201991), while Narenda Wicaksono has a league (67393-21769) and a cup (67393-21807) in FPL that is open to the community.

Elsewhere, Zep has set up a dead team challenge, where teams stick with the same squad selection until the end of the season. Full details can be found here.

What's the thinking on Davies now that Rose has extended his contract? Not worth the risk at the start of the season? He's so tempting at 5.0.

Morning lads. Posted this yesterday and got quite a few views, but I'd appreciate some more.

    Begovic - 4m
    Evans - Caulker - Ward - Dann - Clyne
    Hazard - Mata - Ramsey - Sigurdsson - Wanyama
    Rooney - Costa - Austin.

With this team I'd rotate the 2nd Palace defender (Dann) with Austin so I'll have double Palace defence for WHU, BUR, LEI and will have Austin to play against HUL, SUN, STO. So, I'm taking advantage of the amazing CPL/QPR rotation, whilst having 2 solid subs every week. My defenders' fixtures for the first 6 weeks would be...

HUL, SWA, ars (Austin vs HUL)
    WHU, WHU, WBA, sun
SUN, bur, whu (Austin vs SUN)
    BUR, BUR, QPR, NEW
STO, lei, swa (Austin v STO)
    LEI, LEI, WHU, QPR

Clean sheets galore on paper, with one player in GW1 being the only one with a bad fixture.

    Thoughts? Cheers.

The only thing of change is Ramsey > Sterling. And I don't like Costa, so I'd downgrade him and put upgrade Austin. But that's just my preference.

      Decent team tbh. 9/10

Tbh, I didn't even read that at first, and didn't even notice you had double Palace, I had that tactic at first.

For that I boost your team rating to 9.5/10. (It would be 10 if you got rid of Costa 😉 )

I'm with Sarj on this one... not a fan of costa at that price (mainly because he is unproven, he is prone to committing stupid fouls and getting cards), not a fan of having Austin in there either. better options at that price even without an upgrade.

It is an interesting tactic but I'm not keen on it early on. Arsenal have tough fixtures whereas Chelsea have back to back games against promoted sides so I think it's best to hedge your bets early on and possibly double up on Arsenal mids later when they have better fixtures.

These guys are my current defence. They have decent fixtures and are playing with solid enough teams.
Cheap as you like to boot.

Chambers, Will def start the season and if he keeps up his form- may not be dropped.

Shaw, Competing with Valencia- He was really good and made a big difference when he came on against Liv,

Ben Davies, I don't think Spurs bought him to sit on the bench.

Wisdom, Has started back to back games and I doubt he will be dropped

Cameron,.Captained Stoke in a couple of games and was basically an ever present last season.

    What do ye think??

But not straight away. Mertesacker will still be recovering and Verm looks like getting sold. All it would take is for Koscielney to get an injury and Chambers could still be starting well into September.

I was hoping Cameron would nail himself on, but then I found a way around it, so now I'm torn. Is he nailed though?

Agree with Wisdom if you are looking for a 4.0. LFC wouldn't have loaned him if he was just going to tbe benched (although Daniel Ayala spent alot of time on the bench for Norwich when we loaned him there)

The rest is fine but United will concede goals so I'm not sold on having a pure defender and this is where Ash young really puts his name forward for mine. still not in my team as I have Jones but they looked pretty slugish back there and could have had a few more goals against them

Shaw is competing with Young, not Valencia.

Chambers may not start when Mertesacker get back from holiday. On the other hand, Wenger may move him up to the double pivot, in which case he's OOP.

Can anyone tell me when a united defender or goalkeeper was ever really a great fantasy asset?

United have never been great for clean sheets, under fergie it was always attack is best form of defence.. Have owned Evra and Vidic on occasion but they were never exactly essential.

12m on one defender might be a bit much. The probability of going with 2 Chelsea defenders doubles your chances of getting the wrong one of the five. Personally I'd go with the much lower risk option and pick just one and hope for the best.

Playing with a three man backline I reckon theyre gonna continue in this mold. It's only the good run of fixtures that makes me interested in one. Or Shaw/Rafa if either was a nailed on WB.Currently on Evans, though will gladly ditch after the first 8 GWs, maybe just in time for Baines 😉

I have no idea why your saying United have never been good for clean sheets. Just look at this linked, in 11/12 United kept 20 clean sheets, look at the seasons before that as well.

2 teams with the most goals last season. But Liverpool are without Suarez and many new players have come in. they may take a little time to gel.

City on the other hand are essential I feel.

    Begovich (another)

Cahill Terry Ferdinand Van Anholt Wisdem
    Mata Sterling Young Siggi Lamela
Rooney Costa and either jotevic bony or giroud

I know people saying the midfield light. But i consider Lamela and Sterling will be premium mids this season Mata is class and Young is a good punt for the easy fixtures , if he falls out of favour can replace for whoever flavour of the week at that price. Siggi everyone has

Yeah, could work. I'm doing doubled on the Chelsea back line, but I've gone for the cheaper two. It's good to be conscious of adaptiveness - where you can downgrade as things progress.

I'm not sure Costa's worth more than Fabregas or Hazard though. Better value to be found in midfield than up front for 8.5-9.0 I reckon

I actually like your midfield. Young is the only question mark for me, even though he is in good form and playing well he is competing with Shaw, Valencia and Rafael for two spots. Rotation ahead IMO.

I also think doubling up on Chelsea defence is a massive risk considering we don't know who is nailed on of their 5 main defenders. You've just doubled your chances of getting it wrong.

Other than that though I think the team is solid and good call on leaving your 3rd striker spot open, personally I've gone with Dzeko.

    Krul Elliot
