Scout Scribbles – Thursday Fixtures Round Up

Hull squeeze into the next qualifying round of the Europa League with a narrow win over AS Trencin thanks to goals from Ahmed Elmohamady and Sone Aluko. Connor Wickham and Steven Fletcher grab a goal apiece, while Vito Mannone is handed his first start in five matches as Sunderland defeat Real Betis. Arsene Wenger reveals he is set to rest his German trio for the season opener against Palace, whilst Mauricio Pochettino discusses his intention for Erik Lamela for the campaign ahead:

Tigers Leave it Late
Sone Aluko emerged from the bench to fire Hull into the final qualifying round of the Europa League last night. Steve Bruce made a trio of alterations to the side that played out a goalless first leg draw with AS Trencin last week, bringing in Robert Snodgrass, Robbie Brady and Yannick Sagbo for Liam Rosenior, David Meyler and Aluko, with new boy Thomas Ince once again utilised as a late second-half sub.

Bruce started with a 3-5-2 formation with Ahmed Elmohamady and Brady out wide and the pair combined for the hosts’ opener, with the Egyptian finding the net from Brady’s cross. Snodgrass was afforded a roving role as the most advanced central midfielder before Brady’s early withdrawal saw the Tigers switch to 4-4-2, with the Scot on the left and substitute Ince on the opposite flank. Snodgrass kept himself on Fantasy radars with an assist for Aluko’s winner in the 2-1 triumph, though last night’s selection is something of a worry for those eyeing up Nikica Jelavic ahead of Hull’s kind opening schedule. Given that the Croatian wasn’t even amongst the subs, it’s fair to say Bruce is easing him back into action after his summer duties for his country in the Brazil World Cup.

After the game, Bruce hailed the depth of his squad for the season ahead and talked up last night’s match-winner. Bearing in mind Sagbo is suspended for the first two league matches, Aluko has certainly staked a claim to partner Shane Long up front until Jelavic returns to full fitness.

“I honestly believe the ability to bring people off the bench is what won us the game. That’s why we have a squad. Sone looks the best I’ve seen him in seven years physically. We all know he’s got terrific ability. Let’s hope he stays injury-free because he could be a big player for us.”

Black Cats Frontmen in the Goals
After failing to score in their previous two matches, Sunderland returned to winning way with a 2-0 victory over Real Betis last night. Connor Wickham and Steven Fletcher grabbed a goal apiece (taking their tallies to two and three over the summer), with the latter handed the lone forward role before moving out wide to accommodate substitute Fletcher midway through the second period. Gus Poyet fielded new boys Patrick van Aanholt and Jack Rodwell and both turned in impressive displays, according to the official match report. Rodwell was fielded alongside Seb Larsson in a 4-1-4-1 formation, with Liam Bridcutt sitting in front of the back-four, before the former City man made way at the break.

Elsewhere, Vito Mannone recovered from illness to take his place between the sticks. The Italian – who is owned by 12% of FPL managers – had failed to start any of the previous four friendlies, with Gus Poyet recently admitting he’s still undecided over his preferred first-choice keeper – last night’s clean sheet continued a series of excellent defensive displays which have seen the Wearsiders concede just two goals in seven matches.

Billy Jones continues to miss out through a hamstring injury, allowing Santiago Vergini – who returned on loan earlier this week – to immediately slot in at right-back. Poyet has concerns over Emmanuel Giaccherini, though, after the Italian was forced off with a groin injury – the Black Cats boss revealed after the match:

“We are hoping that he has just over-extended. But we will have to see how things settle down and he might need a scan. We could be looking at him being out for a couple of weeks.”

In Other News
Wenger to Rest German Trio
Arsene Wenger had plenty to discuss ahead of Arsenal’s weekend Community Shield clash with City. The Gunners boss confirmed that German trio Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski won’t return to training until Monday and will therefore not be fit in time for the season opener at home to Palace.

“It’s not ideal but the final of the World Cup was on July 13 and when they went back to Germany, they lost a few days for celebrations. They played seven games at the World Cup [in addition to] the whole English season. Having the experience of a team that has won the World Cup [always] makes it difficult mentally to come back and be sharp and hungry straight away again. You have the choice – you get them back very quickly and you lose them in October, or you give them a needed rest to build them up again. They have an individual programme that they follow so they could be very quick.”

Wenger revealed he sees young Callum Chambers as developing into a defensive midfielder for the north London club but with Thomas Vermaelen set to leave, the summer signing from Southampton could be in line to start against the Eagles in light of Mertesacker’s absence. Chambers started both of last weekend’s Emirates Cup matches and clearly has his manager’s confidence – at 4.5 in FPL he could be a short-term punt for those looking to wildcard in the first international break, with games against Arsenal play Palace and Leicester in the first three.

The Arsenal boss also rolled out on injury update on Theo Walcott, revealing that he expects the winger to be available for selection at the end of this month or the beginning of September at the latest. A return to action merely deepens the dilemma for Fantasy managers, with Aaron Ramsey and Alexis Sanchez already sitting in 21% and 29% of FPL squads respectively, though with Walcott back in the fold, we should finally get an idea as to where Sanchez is likely to be fielded for the season ahead – a move up front could easily persuade many to double up on the Gunners’ midfield, given Walcott and Ramsey’s ability to pick up the points.

Pochettino Talks Up Lamela
The Spurs boss took time out to praise Erik Lamela after the midfielder turned in some impressive showing over the summer. Tottenham’s top scorer with three goals so far, Lamela has mainly been fielded centrally in a 4-2-3-1 but was utilised from the right against Celtic last time out – according to his manager, though, it seems that the Argentine isn’t guaranteed a central position all the time, and may alternate with the likes of Christian Eriksen in the role in “the hole” depending on the circumstances:

“You know Erik Lamela and we know him from Argentina and Italy. But he is still young and the Premier League is the most difficult league to play in – the style, the language and to adapt. But now after one year at Tottenham we think and we believe that Erik is ready to show his quality. Will he play as a No10 or out wide? It depends on the situation. My philosophy is to give a freer style with a good organisation – but not only with Erik, with other players. They are unbelievable players, creating a different action on the ball. The most important thing is to create good organisation and a good shape for our players to be comfortable in and to show their real qualities.”

Ok, new to this so first post. Please can you let me know what you think?

    Krul (Myhill)
Evans, Debuchy, Bruce (Moore and Mariappa)
Mata, Sterling, Eriksen, Yaya Toure (Albrington)
    Costa, Rooney, Austin

Defence feels a little too weak. Perhaps Nasri for Yaya and then Cahill for Bruce?

none of the big chelsea or Arsnal midfielders?: Risky business but could pay off..i would definately leave Toure..means you can always downgrade to one of them if he doesnt perform as well as expected

As Morst has said you have the ability to downgrade to Chel/Arsenal big midfielders but on the other side, you might have already missed out on vital points if Toure doesnt perform off the bat.

Just check out their fixtures for the first 5/6 weeks.

Me, personally, I've stayed away from Toure - price and better midfielders for less e.g. Hazard/Fabregas/Ramsey which means I can put money into defence or attack and I'm not left switching players for a couple of GWs sorting it out. Of course, if Toure performs, I won't be bothered and certainlly not going out of my way to put him in if it means taking 2 decent players out.

Way I see it.. he is nailed to play at least GW1. That's a clean sheet waiting to happen imo. The casuals might all jump on him as a result, causing him to rise in price. If he puts in another good display, it might even make him a candidate for the DM spot. Bad or good idea?

This I have done as well my friend, we must not close our ears to the grumblings and mutterings from the transfer window either though.

No WC winners will start so Chambers will play, once there is a return he will struggle for a place, CDM being the only area he'll really be able to contest but they still have a number of able bodies for the CM area. And at that point they may have signed someone else.

It won't really be much of an issue though, I have 2 defenders I'm playing every week (Vert and Luis), and then either a palace/sot/swansea defender to come in for Chambers in GW2 onwards.

Since registering on the first day I haven't had a chance to look into FPL till today.

But one thing that bugs me is, why can I not renew my league from last year?

Thoughts on this front 8? 😛

Mata Hazard Sanchez Siggy ( Hoilett )
        Costa Rooney Bojan

Bojan and Hoilett rotate to give me : HUL/hul/SUN/LEI/STO/NEW
With alternatives to HUL-->AVL, and STO--> qpr.

        Cheers 🙂

Let me guess what you would prefer......

            Sanchez --> Ramsey
            Hazard --> Fabregas
            Siggy --> Arnautovic
            Bojan --> Lukaku

5.5m forward, fantastic fixtures, great preseason form, brilliant rotation with Hoilett(if necessary), and I think he'll be motivated to shine this season. A fresh new opportunity to show the world what he's really worth since fizzling out after Barca. What's not to love? 🙂

Towards the end of last season a lot of people were doing score predictions on here so here is an easy way of managing it.
I've created a FFS Predictor on Talksport. It's free to enter with a whopping £1m cash prize. You're all welcome.

Head to Talksport Predictor (sponsored by Selco)
        Register
Enter a private mini- league using the following invitation code
        FD3CD-RNF

I was hoping to see some FFS regulars in there. Already 19 of the 50 available places have been taken with me only recognizing a few names. It'd be nice if you could use the same username in the Predictor as FFS

"Sigurdsson is happiest operating in central role behind a striker.

But the presence of Wilfried Bony and Bafetimbi Gomis up front at Reading last weekend meant the Iceland star started on the right flank.

And though Monk is aware that Sigurdsson prefers to play down the middle, he says Swansea's summer recruit from Spurs must be prepared to be versatile. "

Damn, damn,. bad news for us Siggy punters. None of the casuals own him anyway. They all have Rodwell or so...

Yeah, I was playing around with the options and C jumped out at me.

Doos, I've got Sanchez, but no other Chelsea attacking coverage (but two defenders).

No, I think you could be right... Mourinho's famously conservative, so I'm not sure Costa justifies 10.5. Fabregas is a great little player though...

                        Going with C for now:

                        Krul Guzan
                        Filipe Azpilicueta Debuchy Rosenior Moore
                        Sanchez Ramsey Fabregas Sterling Sigurdsson

They've all be thoroughly researched from a fixture rotation perspective. Hence why Berahino's in there. I've got Siggy too, but the Leicester/WBA combo would mean I could bench him for some of Swansea's tougher fixtures.

                De Gea Mannone

                Koscielny / Shaw / Caulker / Rosenior / Hooiveld

                Sanchez / Bacuna / Mata / Sterling / Barkley

Bojan / Jovetic / Diego Costa

                with 0 in the bank.

A little more experimental up front rather than the tried and tested PL quality we know and love.

                What would you change?

Considering Rooney / Fabregras / Ramsey too
Was on Kane rather than Bojan, but starts could be iffy.

Two up front in the last match. I think Gomis played wide in a 4-3-3 before that. A player of his quality at a club like Swansea should be starting

He's in full training, got a 30 minute run out, has 2 pre season matches left to go, and half of Chelsea's midfield have been declared not ready to start GW1. I think he'll be fine.

I want four chelsea players dammit.

Thinking of sticking with Fab/Costa because I can see Hazard having a slower start, they had a much better rest this Summer. Plus a lot better 9.0 mids than strikers to start with. Still, Haz could do well early on, but you can't have it all.

Dzeko AND Giroud? Not sure that's wise. Two strikers that may start, but will be under increased competition and not guaranteed to start every game.

Dzeko will have competition from Jovetic, and Giroud from Sanchez (and potentially Sanogo and Campbell)

YESS!!! Dzeko stays in my team

Also does this tempt any Newcastle attackers? no Kompany, Demi, Zaba, Sagna, Fernandinoho. That looks like a weak defence to me. In fact what will the defence be?

Sterling mate. If lamela plays eriksen will get pushed wide and wont be as effective as in the middle

...I have neither but I would toss a coin, at a push I'd go Sterling (RMT gives Erik more points tho').

I've gone Eriksen. He will be on all free-kicks and corners and his delivery is superb. Pochetino has also said he will get game time in No. 10 role depending on fixtures - seems like this will be in rotation with Lamela (one in No. 10, one out wide).

Not a fan. No options/depth at all. You have to play same 11 every game with that squad unless looking at early WC?

Chambers also probably won't start so will be a waste.

Have concerns over Bojan considering he's been rubbish for years now.

Does anyone. Anyone at all. Think that Wilshire may come good this season. Are we to assume that with a full preseason he will certainly start in a front six that looks like:

                Arteta/Flamini Wilshire
                Sanchez Ramsey Carzola
                Giroud/Sanogo

but once Ozil is back I wondered if he might lose his place and be behind Ramsey in the pecking order for the more advanced in the double pivot

Even if (and it's a big IF) he does start, he isn't the kind of player that will excel in fantasy football as his game isn't suited to big points. He can be a very good player, but usually more involved in build up/linking play than scoring or playing the last ball through.

                  B personally.

Think Baines is overpriced and for some reason, just never fancy Silva myself.

BREAKING: Barcelona are set to sign Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen on a four-year contract after the clubs having agreed to a £15 million transfer fee.

United also offerred Arsenal £15 million for the defender, but were turned down after having refuse to include Smalling in the deal.
