Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Monday

Stevan Jovetic bags a brace as City ease past Liverpool 3-1. Sergio Aguero emerges from the bench to score once again, with a Pablo Zabaleta own goal denying the hosts a second clean sheet of the season.

Jovetic at the Double
The City striker proved a deadly differential in last night’s encounter with Liverpool by bagging a brace in the 3-1 win. Sold by over 24,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers last week, Jovetic sat in less than 5% of Fantasy teams as the Reds rolled up to the Etihad but, handed a start alongside Edin Dzeko once again, he rediscovered the form that saw him net five times in pre-season and delivered a 13-point return for his owners.

Now down to 7.9 in FPL, Jovetic seems in the driving seat to retain a starting berth at home to Stoke next weekend and arguably has the platform to edge ahead of Dzeko in the pecking order. The latter was forced off with a leg problem midway through the second period, though Manuel Pellegrini was optimistic of his chances after the match:

“Edin had a kick that gave him some trouble with his leg but I don’t think it is anything important. We will see tomorrow but I think he will be okay.”

Quick-Fire Aguero Nets Again
Once again, the Argentine demonstrated that he needs little time to make an impact for City. Having netted just seven minutes into his substitute appearance at Newcastle last week, Aguero scored 23 seconds after climbing off the bench to breach the Liverpool backline and bring him onto Fantasy radars ahead of the home clash against Stoke. Granted, Manuel Pellegrini’s team sheets underline he’s clearly determined to protect Aguero as he returns to match sharpness, but if Dzeko fails to recover, the little Argentine could be let loose against the Potters.

Kolarov the fall-guy
Despite putting in a strong attacking display in the clean sheet at Newcastle, it was Aleks Kolarov who was sacrificed for Pablo Zabaleta’s return to the starting XI. Gael Clichy switched to his preferred left-back role, leaving Kolarov on the bench as an unused sub. With Bacary Sagna also now an option for Pellegrini, the full-back situation is looking complex and difficult to read. Secure investment in the City back four looks limited to Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany once again, then.

Reds Unconvincing in Etihad Loss
A late own goal by Pablo Zabaleta was all the Reds had to show for last night’s display. Coming off the back of a narrow home win over Southampton, there are signs that Liverpool may take some time to adjust to life without Luis Suarez. The late introduction of Rickie Lambert suggests the former Southampton man will be no more than Brendan Rodgers’ “Plan B” in the latter part of matches, though Raheem Sterling owners will be a little concerned that the youngster’s minutes were curtailed to allow Lambert pitch time.

In defence, Rodgers has concerns over full-backs Glen Johnson and Albert Moreno who picked up injuries. The former was forced out of the action due to a thigh problem, whilst the Spaniard picked up a sprained ankle on his debut. With a trip to Spurs up next, the Reds defence looks unlikely to chalk up their first shut-out of the season in light of last night’s display, though the schedule does improve significantly from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Question: I had 2 FT's on Sunday and used them to change up a few positions. Decided to play my WC as I was just overall not all that happy with my team. Will I get these FT's back?

    What option is better?

    1) 3-5-2 with:
Mata-Ramsey-Eriksen-Siggy-Lamela ( or maybe Tadic over Lamela? and then put Naismith instead the 4.9 forward)
    Costa-Rooney ( some 4.9 forward)

    2)3-4-3 with:
    Mata Ramsey-Eriksen-Siggy ( El Ahmadi)
Costa-Jovetic-Rooney (and have 0.5 in the bank and also 1 FT)

From a WHL regular... could really go either way. Either way, Dier will play, but there's no chance of a clean sheet. If Naughton starts I'd expect no more than a solitary point from him!

    Fab - Ramsey - Siggy - Sterling
    Dzeko - Rooney - Costa.

Tempted to exchange Dzeko, afraid he might lose his start. Go jovetic? Or take punt on naismith and free up a bunch of cash. Any other ideas?

Given Arsenal's "defending" against Everton I have a feeling the big teams will still be able to do them over. Chelsea the issue but the Arsenal game could be full of goals.

They have Flamini as CDM, and Ramsey next to him. That's easily good enough, if they have Kocs-Per back by then.

Over last 2 matches at Emirates City has scored 1 goal. And that has been with Arteta, Flamini and Wilshere sharing the DM duties over those matches.

I am keeping cash spare. Once I see he starts a game and is fine then I will get him

I am not being silly and spending 12m on a player who plays 20 mins. Sure he has scored 2 goals in 2 games but he just won't do this every time.

Yeah. I have no doubt he will continue to score as a sub too, but he won't score more than 1 goal per match until he starts them, and he has to score 8-9 points or more per match to justify his price. Otherwise I'll find better value elsewhere.

Exactly, that is the one blessing really. As long as his returns stay low he'll hopefully go under the radar.

Unfortunately, I don't think he can go under the radar anymore. We might be forced to buy him to afford him. That just usually is not the good way to reason, so in that case I might just be better off without him at all.

It really is like that. Optimally, we'll wait for a few matches and buy him then for a reasonable price. The other option is to buy him now, despite the fact that he is not worth the money yet, to be sure to get his points when he starts again. But the risk is that he'll pick an injury and we'll only get his one goal matches. In case we wait, we may then have to make the decision whether we bring him in for any price, say 12.8, or whether we make better points by investing that elsewhere.

We get points per match in FPL, not per minute. As long as he doesn't play 60+ minutes per match, he will not score enough to justify his price. The minimum acceptable per match average from him is goal + assist.

Minimum is a goal + assist?! How is that a minumum? 😛

I can't see any player in the world bar Ronaldo/Messi/Zlatan getting over 30 goals and over 30 assists in 38 games 😛 Think you're setting your standards for a 12m player a bit high there Camp 😛

Okay, let me put this a bit differently: as long as he continues to score just one goal and not playing enough to get 2-3 baps, he is not worth the 12m tag. With 6ppg, you pay 2m for each point he gives you. That's very poor. I'm not going to break this down to you completely, but let me put very simply why goal+assist is sort of minimum:

                  1. He needs to score 8ppg minimum to justify his price.
                  2. As long as he does not start the matches, the plausible way he can do that is to add an assist to his goal - or score another goal, but that's more than goal+assist.

That will occasionally get him to even 9-10 points, which would justify buying him. But as long as he 1. doesn't start, and 2. scores 1 goal per match, he is poor value for his price.

But let's say, if he doesn't start, I would accept from him:

1 goal per match with an assist in every second match if he also will average 1,5 baps/match.

we may be lucky, if mc holds off for next game, aguero may not rise during the break. if he makes it through the break without an injury, i am buying for sure. that seems like the best move.

They've been approaching it differently, he's very slowly returning from the bench and his movement is not looking in any way hampered...

Perhaps they've learned their lesson with him...

I think we can assess after Stoke, if he only gets 6 against them at 12 million he won't shoot up in price. If he smashes it we're in trouble.

    (b) Clyne, Mutch and Naismith

      B. Even though Larsson looked sharp when last I saw sunderland, QPR was a shambles and I think Clyne cleanies (and assists) will outweigh the occasional caulker goal.

So with one FT for this week just go mutch to larsson before one goes down and the other up? Only other thing I was thinking was ditching bojan for naismith but worried about the latters minutes long term

Naismith was going to start Before Barkleys injury imo. Call it a bandwagon but he finished the last season on a high and had played his way into RM's team. Nais, Lukaku, Barkley, were all going to suffer rotation with Kone McGeady Mirallas Pienaar around. He started at 5m - bargain, simple as that.

        Yep 🙂
Just the point being made by others that Naismith is playing because of Barkleys injury, he would have started theseason anyway ...and will always be prone to some rotation from RM as will the others.
