The Digest – Gameweek 3

We cast a final glance back towards Gameweek 3 this morning. Chelsea’s deadly front man, Liverpool’s display at the Lane and the encouraging form of a number of budget strikers all come into consideration.

The Player

On Thursday, the press were united in suggesting he’d be out for up to six weeks with a hamstring injury. On Friday, Jose Mourinho described him as a “big doubt” for Chelsea’s trip to Everton. On Saturday, Diego Costa scored twice and grabbed the maximum bonus points in a 6-3 rout at Goodison, badly burning the 155,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who decided to part company with the summer signing ahead of the weekend deadline.

He’s been bothered by hamstring problems before but Costa, clearly, is made of stern stuff – last season he started 34 of Atletico’s 38 league matches on the way to the La Liga title. Already with four strikes to his name, his consistency compares very favourably to team-mate Eden Hazard – Costa has already scored three times on his travels, just one fewer than the Belgian managed away from Stamford Bridge over the entire 2013/14 campaign.

With Cesc Fabregas pulling the strings in midfield and Costa’s predatory nature in the box, Mourinho’s side look full of goals right now and the Spain international could well be on course to replicate last term’s 28-goal heroics for Atletico. Snapped up by over 240,000 FPL managers already this week, Costa may not quite scale the heights of Luis Suarez as a Fantasy asset but, from what we’ve seen so far, he may be as close as we can hope for this season.

The Team

A patchy home win over Southampton on the opening day of the season highlighted that Liverpool were still finding their feet after the Uruguayan’s departure. Defeat at City hardly helped instil confidence as the Reds rolled up to face a Spurs side that had yet to concede under Mauricio Pochettino but the manner of their emphatic victory suggests Brendan Rodgers’ side are still a Fantasy force to be reckoned with.

Switching to a midfield diamond, with Raheem Sterling tucked in behind Daniel Sturridge and debutant Mario Balotelli, the Merseysiders tore apart the Tottenham rearguard with a display that could easily have harvested more than three goals. The attacking trio now brace themselves for a superb run of fixtures that is sure to bring significant investment Liverpool’s way – heading into the next six Gameweeks (AVL, wh, EVE, WBA, qpr, HUL) without at least one of Sterling and Sturridge on board looks a risky tactic.

At the back, too, the attacking thrust offered by summer signing Alberto Moreno down the left has already come to fruition emphatically at the Lane. With Glen Johnson and Martin Skrtel sidelined through injury last weekend, the Reds backline expertly marshaled their opponents in the final third, and with new boys Dejan Lovren and Javier Manquillo also starting alongside Moreno and Mamadou Sakho, there’s cause for optimism at both ends of the pitch for Rodgers’ side right now.

The Talking Point

As Costa headed into the weekend with question marks hanging over him, Fantasy managers loaded up on City pair Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero for the home clash against Stoke. Their failure to deliver, allied with United’s toils at Burnley and Sturridge’s blank at Spurs, came at a time where many budget forwards put their names forward as potential contenders for our three-man frontlines.

After three Gameweeks of the new season, five of the top eight forwards are priced at 6.0 and under. Steven Naismith and Andreas Weimann have already delivered 20+ points for their owners, while Saido Berahino, Nikica Jelavic and Leonardo Ulloa are all pushing to be this year’s Jay Rodriguez.

Right now, with such a wealth of budget options to consider, many may be tempted to spend big in midfield and potentially snap up Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic at the back, bringing more 3-5-2 formations into contention than ever before.

For others, it’s only a matter of time before the premium forwards start to deliver, though. As mentioned, Liverpool’s run of matches will surely afford Sturridge the chance to get amongst the goals again, while the arrival of Radamel Falcao at United looks very tempting – crucially, the Colombian would be a real differential to the 42%-owned Wayne Rooney and is priced at 11.0 to Rooney’s 10.5. With the prolific Costa looking unstoppable, a trio of heavy-hitters up top looks just as enticing.

For the sake of our Fantasy seasons, though, we need the likes of Naismith and Ivanovic to flourish in order to offer more variety amongst out 15-man squads. It can only be beneficial to the Fantasy games and managers alike that, as we head into Gameweek 4, there’s less agreement than ever on the 2014/15 “template team”.

Guys whats the general consensus on having a cheap defence so that you can spend that extra £ upgrading your midfield and strikers? I posed the question previously by saying can you achieve top 10k by setting your team up this way and most replies seemed to suggest having one 5.0 and the rest 4.5/4.0 defenders is the way forward.

I think it's the way to go. Especially given the midfielders and strikers on offer at the moment. Looking to downgrade Terry to a Pool defender.

I tried that GW1 and it didn't work. Now my view is cheap but not too cheap. There is value in the 4.5m and 5m buckets, so 23-23.5m should do it.

Thing is, there's only one 4m defender (Moore) left who looks nailed on long term. False economy to go 4m in my view.

Especially if you take the chances created for Giroud and Welbeck's conversion rate....seems to make Wellbeck a +20 goal striker for 6.9m....at least until January. I'll go for that and it let's me get a midfield of

        Siggy Fabregas Hazard Ramsey Stirling

        with

Welbeck Naismith & DC up front

nine goals in 15 starts is not too shabby. Lack of starts has hindered his goal count I think.

The stats indicate that if he got 30 plus starts he'd be on about 18 or so goals...for 6.9m that is one hell of a return.

and when he has started he's tended to start on the wing.

I like him but whilst Naismith is still performing for less than 6.0 I don't think I'll have room.

Just a random thought (and i wish I had had this before I captained him at the weekend)

The Welbeck signing is good news for Ramsey IMO. For me it's no co-incidence that all of his goals have come when Giroud was on the pitch. Ramsey's game is based on breaking late into space around the box. When Giroud is up front he is a willing worker. he holds it up, runs the channels and pulls defenders away, opening up the space for Ramsey to exploit. I didn't see a lot of this from Sanogo'o on Sunday.

For all the stick he gets in some quarters this is exactly what you will get with Welbeck, he'll hold it up, he'll run at people and he'll open up the spaces, which will be of benefit to Ramsey

Maybe I won't sell Rambo after all.

I don't think Rooney is anything more than moderate in midfield and I'm struggling to believe he'll be ahead of Mata in the hole...the big problem for Mata comes if Van Gaal switches to 4-3-3 in which case Mata's nerfed big-time

This has been asked many atime, but would like an answer myself...

Obviously it's down to personal preference, state of team, how well you're doing...

But, is this best time to WC?

We (within reason) know what first team's are. He general form, & now who has been transferred in....

We have two weeks to (if we do) tinker around, catch the price rises & drops...

    I'm seriously considering it....

I think this season the price changes shouldn't be taken into consideration as the sites aren't accurate meaning we don't really know who will rise/drop and when but I agree in regards to teams and performances etc if you are not happy with your team and you want an overhaul than go for it. I don't think there is a general answer for when to WC but simply when you feel like you will benefit the most from it. So don't hold it for the sake of holding it because people are saying its too early to WC but at the same time don't use it because you like the look of your new team or you want a few new players in.

But yes, agreed M.I.A... It was a thought I just wanted to share & get some clarity on.

        Thanks

I really do think it's the best time to wildcard. You get all the price rises of the international break, cover any injuries, bring in new players from the close of the transfer window. An dof course clear out the clutter. Thats a lot of peace of mind right there and of course the added bonus of giving you something to tinker with over the break.

As for holding onto it, last year I barely even used my January Wildcard. As the season progresses, you start adding key players bit by bit so that the later you leave it, more than likely you wont need that many new additions to your squad if you plan ahead.

Which leaves injuries and DGWs. As for injuries, thats really just bad luck if your team gets decimated and frankly I'll just roll with the hits if it does happen. I really dont see the point of squirreling it away for a rainy day. And DGW's can be deceiving. Again, if you plan ahead you can have most of the players you want in advance. And often said DGW players are overrated. So many single gameweek players burned us last year.

All being said and done, I wouldnt waste your WC too easily if your team is in good shape. But it's worth lettinf loose if you weigh up that your team isn't that good and you can see the long term benefits of switching it up.

a)MU defence : Jones is nailed ? Blind 'l play as Def or as DM ?

b)Soton defence : Alderweireld in , Yoshida bench?

Jones is nailed. Blind will be CDM.

Wait and see the next game to know if Yoshida is 2nd choice.

      a) prolly nailed and Blind DM but who knows?
      b) prolly, and if not immediately certainly very soon. Yoshida is toast.

    My team for next GW:

    Bego

    Terry PVA Caulker

    Ramsey Fabs Eriksen Sterling

    Rooney Costa Naismith

No need to WC at all is there? Just a FT to switch Caulker out to Robertson (or something)

Please help, do I need to wildcard?

Silva to Siggy, or maybe Tadic as a differential (lurvely fixtures)
Bojan to ??? Dunno, you could afford Welbeck for a punt but I've been very impressed with Ulloa - I think I'll be bringing him in unless I need to cover injuries elsewhere.

I think Nibbsy basically got it right, but there are options.

    Any help would be nice.

    De Gea (Myhill)

Shawcross - Coloccini - Debuchy (van Aanholt, Wisdom)

    Sterling(vC) - Ramsey - Sigurdsson - Eriksen (Dyer)

    Costa - Rooney(C) - Naismith

3.4m in the bank. What would you spend the money for?
I kind of wanna get rid of Debuchy, Eriksen, Rooney, (naismith and keepers eventually aswell).

No free transfers. Kind of wanna give one more chance to Eriksen due the next 2 semi easy games. Rooney to Falcao, Debuchy to Moreno, Eriksen to ?..

    @NABIL

you reckon I should just WC with those changes?

    I have 2 FTs

So I can just do Mata Bojan -> Sterling Naismith, and bank 1m.
Can use the 1m to upgrade Rooney to Costa / Falcao.

Stuck with Ramsey and Debuchy rather than Sanchez PvA though,
which might not be the worst thing?

Not until the next GW - they're protected for a number of days - some say 7, some 8, others 10. Whichever it is the protection period will finish by the end of next week. If it's 10 days then they're pretty much ruled out as far as price rises are concerned before the next GW starts, but if it's 7 then price rises are very possible.
