Scout Report – Toby Alderweireld

Southampton wrapped up their business for the summer by sealing a one-year loan deal for defender Toby Alderweireld from La Liga champions Atletico Madrid during last Monday’s transfer deadline day. Upon completing the transfer, Saints boss Ronald Koeman hailed the quality and top-flight experience of his latest signing:

“I am delighted that we have been able to bring Toby to the club. He is a strong defender, and is also very good at building up the play when we play out from the back. He played in the top league in Spain and against top teams in Europe, so he has a lot of confidence and experience, and he has a big future because he is still young. We needed competition in our squad, and with Toby here we now have a lot of possibilities and quality.”

Alderweireld, meanwhile, admitted he’s keen to work under the Dutchman and stressed his eagerness to kick on in his new surroundings:

“Koeman’s style of play fits me and I’m very happy to be here. It’s a very big step for my career. I had to make the right decision. I think Southampton in this stage of my career is the right step. They are up and coming, a very warm club. It’s something I’ve been searching for and it’s great that I find it here. Now, I want to give something back to the club and do all my best to help the team. It’s nice to hear that he (Koeman) likes my play. He called me and said that he really wants me to come. A trainer that believes in me is really important.”

The History

Tobias Albertine Maurits Alderweireld is yet another product of the indefatigable Ajax youth academy. Having impressed as a youngster, the Belgian earned his first-team debut in the season of 2008/09 during which he went on to make several appearances in the Eredivisie and Europa League. The following campaign, Alderweireld – at the age of just 20 – established himself in Ajax’s starting XI at centre-back alongside Jan Vertonghen, and finished the season with the reputed title of ‘Ajax Talent of the Year’.

In the following three seasons, Alderweireld was an integral part of the Ajax side that secured three consecutive Eredivisie titles, scoring five goals in the league and a further five in his side’s Champions League pursuits.

Following his success with the Dutch giants, the young defender moved to Atletico at the start of the 2013/14 season for a €7 million fee. However, game-time proved hard to come by for the Belgian, who made just 12 appearances for his new side as they pipped Barcelona and rivals Real Madrid to the La Liga title and reached the Champions League final (in which Alderweireld took to the field for the final stages of extra time).

Having made his senior debut in 2009, Alderweireld now has 37 caps to his name for Belgium’s national side. The most recent of those appearances came in this summer’s World Cup, in which the defender started four of Belgium’s five games, conceding just three goals.

The Prospects

Though last season may have been a disappointment for Alderweireld on a personal level, his move to Southampton should breathe new life into the 25-year-old’s career. The Belgian’s experience on the continent looks set to see him instilled at the hear of the Saints’ back-four alongside Jose Fonte, which should all but ending the game time of Maya Yoshida, who has until now stood out as the only sub-5.0 route into Koeman’s defence.

Although Alderweireld was occasionally used at right back during his years with Ajax, it seems highly unlikely that Nathaniel Clyne’s starting spot will come under threat. Alderweireld has been introduced to the Fantasy Premier League game at a starting price of 5.0, a factor which could propel him up and above the 5.5-priced Fonte in our reckoning if he does, as expected, secure a starting role.

Whilst Clyne’s potential for attacking returns still guarantees his higher place in our Watchlist right now, Alderweireld himself demonstrated a propensity for a stunning strike on a number of occasions during his years at Ajax – a couple of those in the near future for the Saints would see the Belgian’s allure increase immensely.

The defender couldn’t be handed a kinder schedule to settle in to his new surroundings. Southampton are one of only five teams to be handed four home fixtures in the next six Gameweeks and one look at their schedule (NEW, swa, QPR, tot, SUN, STO) suggests they have every chance of continuing on from the Gameweek 3 win at West Ham. With a summer of upheaval now over, Koeman will be optimistic that his new-look side can click into gear and Alderweireld’s arrival certainly suggests they’ve made a step in the right direction.

just to confirm what i think - i make as many changes as i can for as many hits as i need, to make as much from price rises as possible then i WC and all the hits go away and i keep the cash???

Seems a bit bent. But i think this is the case.

    Am i right?

    cheers

Hits are deducted on Saturday. If you play WC, then nothing is taken from your score. WC has no effect on money.

Yes, it works. But it's hard to make any money, especially this season.

The problem is the only keeping 50% rule, which means you need double risers and can't temporarily sell anyone you own who has risen in price previously in order to free up cash or places.

What i was thinking of was getting Welbeck and Di maria in and dropping Ramsey and Studge. take whatever prices do, the WC on friday, probably bringing in Studge and Ramsey.

If welbeck and Di maria rose would i get the coin?

they would have to rise .2 to get .1 out of them. Not worth doing it now if you just want money, should've done it during the last game week. Prices aren't rising that much this season anyways though.

We should all change our gravs to Palestine flags in support for what they are going through.

No offence but a worthless cause like this rainbow one in comparison and everyone is going doo-laly!

I don't want to get too deep into history but a lot of Irish people would identify with the Palestinians as the oppressed underdog.
Some Irish people are opportunist though and use it to further their own cause.
At the same time on a governmental level Israel views Ireland as a friend. In fact former Israeli leaders (at the foundation of Israel) were educated in Dublin.
So there is no black and white on it.

That's your opinion and your entitled to it, but I personally believe it's an "invisible" problem in football which needs attention bringing to it, and a mainstream campaign such as the rainbow laces one is a great way to allow people to stand up and say homophobia is not acceptable

Not sure that's true. People might get annoyed but that's not the point. It's more about mass expression of what is acceptable. It suppresses casual homophobia and pushes more extreme forms to areas outside normal society.

        Worthless cause, seriously?

There are no openly gay footballers, barely any openly gay sportsmen. There are places in the world where being gay can get you imprisoned or killed.

Don't start whatabouting to find a "worse" problem like Gaza. You don't not support diabetes research because cancer is worse. A good cause is worth supporting regardless of other problems in the world.

Not really sure how that follows from what I said, but anyway...

It's probably because politics tends to inspire opposing views, arguments, and has nothing to do with fantasy football.

An anti-homophobia campaign should only inspire opposition from the very narrow minded, and as it involves the premier league is at least indirectly related to fantasy football.

I never saw the approach of maximising $s on the pitch as a protection against price drop, more as a recognition that $s on the field = pts if allocated well. Will be interested to see how it goes for you. Can't fault any of your picks individually.

Costa -> Jovetic was last week's car crash transfer.

This week? Mata -> Sterling has all the hallmarks of another FFS blooper. 😉

I am going Ramsey > sterling for that reason until I hear LVG's line up or ANY news on formation.

you may want to hold mata one more week, though pool home to villa is a tasty fixture.

Getting Mata out will probably be a good long term move imo. Unless a miracle happens where he plays in his favorite no. 10 spot which I highly doubt.

I know where you're coming from but we have had no indication from the manager that Mata will be dropped. NONE. I'm certainly holding for at least another week. I have Sterling too, so I'm not faced with that dilemna.

I'm not suggesting he will be dropped. But as we saw from last year, he isn't exactly effective fantasy wise on the wing (if he in fact doesn't play in the center).

Mata is only being supported by the fixtures and those too stubborn to admit their mistake.

I see nothing in the stats or the games I have watched to make him a good prospect. And he might get dropped.

I probably am being a bit stubborn. However 15 points from 3 games isn't exactly a "mistake".

1 goal 0 assist is more appropriate if u look at it as the score is boosted up by the 3bps. And it looks tt it is more likely that the ratio will get worsen if we continue keeping him.

                    Jovetic + Kolarov ---> Welbeck + Ivanovic for -8?

Hmm. I'd normally say no to -8 in general, let alone to get a defender in.

But in your case, you may have two non players. If both are confirmed out, then I'd say go for it.

This is what I'm concerned about, I'm currently looking at only fielding 10 players. I'd do Jovetic - Welbeck, but then I have him playing against Kolarov which isn't great, but then Kolarov might not even play...

I'd probably do it then. Wisdom has Everton and Chambers and Wanyama may not play. Iva will probably get a CS and as long as Welbeck plays, you'll be neutral. Welbeck scores and you'll likely be up points.

i guess from a selfish fpl perspective i'm happy about ramsey's injury, given that my rivals all have him and i'm the only one out of us who wildcarded. on the other hand, i was already planning on getting rid anyway and i was hoping he'd rise to 9.2 first before i shipped him out for di maria, which probably ain't gonna happen now? blurgh.

That's the only reason I am annoyed I was hoping he would hit .2 so I could sell.

I now have Ramsey, Jovetic, Hazard, and Costa injury worries, with 0FT. As well as other players I want to get rid of such as Hutton, Terry and Rooney. At what point does it make sense to WC?

Wouldn't be too bothered by any of those except for Jovetic if I owned that lot. Just take a hit or two to sort it.

almost all likely to be short term injuries so it's a tricky one. i think costa and ramsey will start, and i'd be most inclined to ship jovetic out given the rotation worries on top of the injury. personally i wouldn't get rid of terry or rooney anyway. hutton can stay as bench fodder for a bit without it being too huge a deal i'd imagine?

Agree with the other comments. Don't wildcard for knocks and potential injuries. Jove is the only one that is likely out. Better to take one hit than waste a WC

i don't really get this line of thinking. you do a hit if you think it'll help improve your overall points haul, you don't do one if you don't, simple as that.

statistically speaking it makes a huge difference, for example i take a hit on bojan then i need a minimum of a goal just to cancel the -4. whats the odds that a player wil score a brace its a bit high. specially when ur playing in very tight leagues every points count

my point is: if you feel that way about it, why would you take the hit even if you were position 2000000? i guess to me every point always counts, it's not like sometimes you get the week off and it doesn't matter if your hit fails. i mean maybe that applies if you're miles behind your rivals and no longer care or something, but hopefully none of us are at that stage just yet :p

i'm not sure about this. tadic's statistics haven't translated into points, he remains a minor gamble imo. di maria is more expensive and playing for a team with ridiculously low morale, but he's also a superstar playing with a new, ridiculously prolific striker and i'd be very surprised if he doesn't get some points at least.

Frontline of Sturridge/Costa/Jovetic, also have Hazard & Ramsey.

                        Already on a stupid (-4) Lamela & Rooney > Costa & Sterling.

My bench this week is Naylor, Wanyama and Chambers.

Idiotic to WC? or would you take 2 more hits and change whoevers are ruled out later this week.
