Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 11

The Suspension Tightrope doubled in size after an incident-packed Gameweek 11 brought a host of players closer to an automatic one-match ban. Whilst last week’s seven incumbents managed to steer clear of the referee’s wrath and remain on four yellows, they were joined by a further seven players, with Diego Costa the most notable new entry, after the Chelsea striker kept up his remarkable record of being booked in every away appearance in the league so far.

Having missed back-to-back road trips to Palace and Man United over Gameweeks 8-9, Costa’s caution during Saturday’s 2-1 win at Liverpool added to cards accrued at Burnley, Everton and Man City, and given his ability to rack up the yellows on his travels, a ban looks imminent.

Joining Costa on four bookings after their weekend indiscretions are Andreas Weimann, Liam Moore, Richard Dunne, Morgan Schneiderlin and Swansea defensive duo Neil Taylor and Ashley Williams, compounding Garry Monk’s worries at the back, with the likes of Jordi Amat and Federico Fernandez both missing the 2-1 win over Arsenal through injury.

Costa’s caution means that the two most popular players in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game are in danger of toppling off the Tightrope. The 56%-owned Chelsea striker joins team-mate Cesc Fabregas (sitting in 53% of teams), whilst Southampton’s top scorer Graziano Pelle is another asset with big ownership sailing close to the wind.

In terms of newly banned players, Tottenham’s Kyle Naughton is set to face a two-match suspension after earning his second dismissal of the season last weekend. The right-back was sent packing during Sunday’s 2-1 home loss to Stoke after bringing down Victor Moses as the last man, with the Potters winger bearing down on goal. Naughton misses a trip to Hull and home clash with Everton and returns just in time for a Gameweek 14 trip to Chelsea, but with Kyle Walker set to return to first-team training next week, Naughton’s pitch time now looks at major risk.

Unsurprisingly, Tottenham’s decision to appeal Naughton’s ban was rejected by the FA yesterday, after an independent regulatory commission ruled he was guilty of denying Moses a goalscoring opportunity.

Naughton is one of three players suspended for Gameweek 12 duties. QPR defender Rio Ferdinand serves the last of a three-match ban away to Newcastle for his recent Twitter comments, whilst Villa’s Christian Benteke skips the second of a three-match suspension for violent conduct and misses upcoming clashes with Southampton and Burnley.

Arsenal’s Calum Chambers continued his recent ill-disciplined form, and earned a sixth yellow card in just eight Premier League starts for the north London outfit, earning his owners zero points in Sunday’s away loss to Swansea.

Finally, as many as five players return from one-match suspensions in time for Gameweek 12. Both Sunderland’s Lee Cattermole and West Brom’s Craig Gardner toppled off the tightrope in Gameweek 10 and, having sat out the previous round of fixtures, are back in contention for matches against Leicester and Chelsea respectively.

Chris Smalling is available for United’s trip to Arsenal, Palace midfielder and spot-kick taker Mile Jedinak is in the frame as Neil Warnock’s side host Liverpool, whilst Jonjo Shelvey returns for Swansea’s testing trip to the Etihad.

Yep, assuming both remain reasonably injury-free, there's no doubt in my mind.

FPL is all about goals, and Fabregas has rarely looked like scoring.

Hazard has had a mediocre start, Fabregas has been really good, yet the difference is a mere 7 points.

Valid points. Still though Fabregas has retuned in 8 of the 11 games so far. Hazard has in 5. I don't think there will be much between them but wouldn't be able to call who will finish on top.

Fabregas will continue to churn out points at a reasonable rate, but Hazard is likely to score 10-12 goals at least and it'll take a lot of assists to keep up with that.

southampton won't last, they don't have the squad to compete. Injuries to pelle, tadic, or any other key player is going to hurt.

Likes of united, liverpool, arsenal, spurs, everton can only improve. They will improve and southampton will go through a bad spell. I would say they would be lucky to finish top 6

I don't think they will just all of a sudden capitulate, but I expect a natural regression of results, CS returns with the tougher fixtures etc...

Just thinking out loud, but it will be interesting to gauge the effect of a long term injury to one of their defenders, they might struggle to adapt to a reshuffle and become less resolute as a result...

I'm not convinced they have suitable replacements in each position to maintain the same quality...

5th is entirely acheivable, I think if Utd don't get their finger out then 4th could be within reach if they are lucky with injuries...

They have started much like last year, everyone else is doing worse so they seem to be doing better. They really struggled once they got tougher fixtures. Chelsea, Citeh and Arsenal look certs for top 3. Saints have a decent chance of top 4, much will come down to their tough run just ahead. I would rate their players FPL wise at Everton of previous seasons

In FF points scoring (and stats) terms Siggy more like Fabs and Chadli more akin to Haz. Depends what type of player you want. Regular player likely to chip in with assists and on set players or a player who is in the box shooting more. I dont see Siggy having the goal scoring like his first stint, Monk far more conservative than his predecessors.

Downing arguably a better option than both considering WH form and fixtures.

I think any sport can be simplified in that fashion. No doubt the drinking culture and the pub style theme are also drawcards. It's the event of it all or in other words the hype. It's a very smart strategy to get people coming along. Somehow it works, you just have to advertise it like a big party.

It has to be a party atmosphere cos otherwise theirs nothing to keep your mind fixed really. There is no strategy to Darts. You try and score the highest points and if you miss you just repeat the same thing. Theres nothing to talk aboutm nothing to discuss. You cant really say ' I wonder what Taylor is going to do now?' He's going to go out and do the exact same thing. Try and hit 180 lol

Fantasy Football Fix has started to list their accuracy rate in price rises (95.4%) and price drops (92.8%) If it wasn't for Costa the other night rising, bet the % rises would be much higher.

Well, maybe FPL can fine tune their parameters for price change during the season.

Honestly I had the feeling he dropped way too quickly recently compared to his slow rise at the beginning of season. Probably because everybody got him at the same time, and price weren't allowed to follow then. The regular increase in Aguero's owners is much better for the TV.

    Damn,

Have 3 players on 4 YC's - Fabregas, Costa, Schneiderlin
Have 3 players flagged with injuries - Wilson, Saylor, Fabregas

and only 1 FT after the international break.

What to do? Please advise. 0.1m ITB.

    GK - Heaton, Schmeichal
DF - Chambers, Clyne, Saylor, Naylor, Wilson
MD - Fabregas, ADM, Siggy, Schneiderlin, Mane
    FW - Aguero, Costa, Welbeck

Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Scored a good goal against Chelski, scored against City, on pens and QPR take a turn for the good. Sakho had a great opening stint but will that continue now that teams are aware of him, he is arguably the more unproven entity than Austin. Also Andy Carroll coming back to fitness, BFS might change things that could affect his output.

Overall a toss up but there is some logic behind Austin's fan club

Dayum, I just realised that I will have exact cash in gw13 for a chambers>Azpi -4... Worth it?

Chambers fixtures aren't great an Debuchy and Koscielny are back soon. Would leave me with BAines Azpi Clyne Naylor Wisdom

Fair assessment, but don't get rid for a hit.

eh? I'm not against the trade if that's what you wanna do. Just don't throw away points on it.

Fair point. Was just testing how much people like Che to keep CSs! 🙂

I've been literally amazed at their inability to keep clean sheets so far and their propensity to give up one late goal so many times. I think it's just a matter of time before the clean sheets start coming in.

I wouldn't. Chelsea having trouble with clean sheets and the -4 doesn't help.

You may catch a break with no price changes and can do after next gameweek.

I'd rather have chambers and use the money elsewhere, definitely would not take a hit

Didnt think to check selling price.

Mines 101.8 so not a massive rise since the start in terms of funds available

I also had a slow start missing siggy and fab though that has freed me up to get in early on other bandwagons more recently without losing all that value
