Scout Scribbles – Van Persie Inspires Dutch Demolition

Robin van Persie recovers from a knock to spearhead Holland’s win over Latvia. Daley Blind is forced off for the Dutch as fears of knee ligament damage escalate, Asmir Begovic turns out for Bosnia after overcoming a groin complaint, whilst Sunderland and Newcastle have injury concerns over Steven Fletcher and Mehdi Abeid respectively as we edge towards the weekend deadline.

VAN PERSIE ON TARGET IN HOLLAND ROUT

Robin Van Persie recovered from a knock to start for the Netherlands in their Euro Qualifier thrashing of Latvia last night. The Man United forward opened the scoring before providing two assists as the home team ran out 6-0 winners.

The Scout Says: Whilst he’s only scored once in his last five outings with United, Van Persie will be buoyed by yesterday’s display and, despite the potential return of Radamel Falcao from injury, the 12.4-valued Dutchman now looks poised to retain his starting role for the trip to Arsenal’s porous defence this weekend. Two promising home fixtures follow the Gunners clash (HUL, STO) and Van Persie will be hoping to prove worthy of selection over the Colombian to Louis van Gaal, though unless he steps up his output significantly, there’s still no chance the Dutchman will persuade Fantasy managers to overlook Diego Costa and/or Sergio Aguero in the premium bracket. Encouragingly for United, Van Persie sits third amongst forwards for shots inside the box in the last four Gameweeks – only Aguero and Graziano Pelle have managed more – underlining the fact that his team-mates are still handing him chances aplenty to get amongst the goals.

Blind Panic for Van Gaal

Van Persie’s club team-mate Daley Blind was withdrawn after 20 minutes of the Latvia encounter with a knee injury. Post-match, Netherlands’ coach Guus Hiddink was rather pessimistic over the United midfielder’s prospects:

“It doesn’t look good. I think it’s his medial ligament. It could be a strain, but it could also be a tear.”

Later, Blind took to Twitter to celebrate the victory, though remained vague over the extent of his injury:

“I’m proud of my 25 games for the Dutch national team, but I’m so gutted with my injury… I’ll stay positive and will come back stronger! Nevertheless a great win, 6-0!”

The Scout Says: With Michael Carrick also a doubt for the weekend trip to Arsenal after suffering a groin problem in training with England, Van Gaal’s issues in central midfield continue to build. The United boss has recently deployed a 4-1-4-1 set up with Blind in front of the back-four but the suspension of Chris Smalling saw the Dutchman partner Paddy McNair in central defence last time out, with Carrick taking on the screening role. If both miss out, Van Gaal could turn to Ander Herrera for the first time since he was replaced at half-time by Marouane Fellaini against Everton in Gameweek 8, though Darren Fletcher is perhaps a more industrious option. Van Gaal could, yet again, change tactics to deal with the situation but, having admitted he’s tinkered with his system “too much”, he may be reluctant to restructure yet again. With the likes of Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Marcos Rojo all still sidelined, Blind’s likely absence could see Smalling and McNair face up to Alexis Sanchez at the Emirates, then – a situation which will raise hopes of a profitable Gameweek 12 amongst the Chilean’s growing band of owners.

TOON FACE ABEID ABSENCE

Mehdi Abeid is likely to be sidelined for two weeks for Newcastle after injuring himself whilst in training with Algeria’s national side ahead of their African Cup of Nations tie with Ethiopia.

The Scout Says: Afforded the full 90 minutes in central midfield in each of the last two Gameweeks, Abeid’s defensive duties in front of the back-four have been pivotal to the Magpies’ recent turnaround in resilience . His ball-winning ability has helped his side chalk up clean sheets in both of those fixtures, and with Cheick Tiote also a doubt for Gameweek 9 clash with QPR with a calf complaint, they may now struggle to maintain their recent defensive showings. One option for Alan Pardew would be to move Moussa Sissoko from his recent role in “the hole” to a deeper position, and this would, of course, seriously diminish the potential of the 5.8-priced Senegal international just when he was beginning to win us over as a feasible differential pick.

BEGOVIC TURNS OUT FOR BOSNIA

Stoke’s Asmir Begovic overcame a groin problem in time to feature for Bosnia yesterday in their 3-0 loss to Israel.

The Scout Says: With the Potters’ backline having only kept two clean sheets all season, it seems quite remarkable that the 4.9-valued Begovic currently boasts a higher ownership than West Brom’s Ben Foster or Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski, who have managed four and five shutouts respectively. Begovic does, at least, offer his owners a potentially profitable home clash with Burnley in Gameweek 12, though Stoke’s fixtures turn dire thereafter (liv, mun, ARS, cpl, CHE, eve) and Mark Hughes’ men are likely to continue to struggle for further defensive returns. With that schedule in mind, the 7.5%-owned stopper is likely to be sold on by a number of Fantasy managers over the coming weeks.

FLETCHER FORCED OUT OF ENGLAND ENCOUNTER

Sunderland are sweating on the extent of the ankle injury picked up by Steven Fletcher on Friday, after Scotland manager Gordon Strachan confirmed that the forward will miss his side’s friendly against England tomorrow evening.

The Scout Says: With four goals, an assist and six bonus points accrued in his last five appearances for Sunderland, it would be fair to say that Fletcher’s contribution could prove vital for the Black Cats’ ambitions this season, and given his injury history, this recent setback will come as a real concern. The Scot played a part in five of his side’s seven goals across that five-Gameweek period, and without his presence at the spearhead of their attack, Gus Poyet’s side may even struggle to find a way through a Leicester defence next weekend that has conceded in ten of their eleven outings so far this campaign. Connor Wickham will likely be trusted to take up Fletcher’s central position, though Jozy Altidore may also be in contention for what would be his first start of the season. However, with the schedule turning poor from Gameweek 13 onwards (CHE, MCI, liv, WHM, new) few will be considering any of Wearsiders’ attacking assets anyway.

Maybe (B) with Yun instead of Caulker, that should give you some nice cash to play with.

I don't see the point in dumping Curtois because his fixtures are good and it's a bit close to Jan WC to be wasting a transfer on GKs, imo.

Your front 7 looks great so sorting out your defence looks wise, then you don't need to worry about Albrighton because if you need a sub, one of your defenders can step in.

If I do B) with Yun, it'll leave me with:

        Courtois 4.0
        Baines Naylor Wisdom Saylor Yun

With 1.0 ITB, anywhere I can improve? Defense still looks shite, really.

If you are not happy with that defense then you should rather keep Clyne.

Im considering keeping Bertrand through his difficult run.

          My defence is:
          Heaton
          Duff-Hutton-Baines-Bertrand-Naylor

And yes, I play both Heaton and Duff when they are at home.

It's worked 2/4 times so far with CS vs Sunderland and Hull.

I dont think selling Curtois to enable the Azpilicueta transfer is worth. Sure hes got more point potential, but not that much that id want to use a transfer on it, and hes the same price. Wouldnt get Chambers either, after his shocking performance v Swansea and the fact that Debuchy is returning soon.

As I said to Tina, Azpi takes up a defensive slot, meaning I don't have to rely on the other tosh as often.

        Fabianski Guzan

It kinda does to me, too. But with it beeing so close to the january wc i think spending 2 transfers to shift out Curtois for Azpilicueta (in reality that is what youre doing), is just not worth it. Obviously if you have no other issues youd want to resolve over the next 3 transfers, then by all means, go ahead.

Tbh, if you have a "dead" midfielder or defender, its not that big of a deal if a) you have other bench players that are "working" and b) theyre not dropping massively in price. And the thing is, although its virtually impossible to do so, keeping on to that extra FT could REALLY come in handy down the line come christmas.

It's a FT, yes but it doesn't feel right to leave Pelle this GW. Fancy Welbeck to do well against that United defence & also don't have funds for direct swap to Costa there so Pelle is the only route to welcome Costa. Will (C) Kun. I've Tadic so may be he'll cover if Pelle scores with an assist? Costa on 4 YCs is a worry, though. Still you think it's worth it?

I looked at Soton's fitures again and apart from the City and Arsenal games, I can see maybe 2-3 CSs from the following 4 which are Utd at home, burnley away,Everton at home and Palace away. Is getting rid of all Soton defensive cover now really necessary for those doubling up or 1 enough for now?

1? That doesn't add up to what we have seen from them defensively so far. The only way this would make sense is that you predict that they get hammered bu City and Arsenal and their confidence to be shattered. They will keep out 1 or 2 of Arsenal,Everton and Utd imo.

Yep. None of these three teams are exactly running teams over at the moment, and when youre in that defensive zone, you can do it against anybody. They shut down City during their fantastic run a season or two ago, when City scored at will against every team.

I haven't watched QPR in a while tbf but i did when i had Caulker. They had a worrying knack of aiming for Caulker on set pieces and then asking him to head the ball back across goal and they were looking to pick up on the scraps/2nd ball, rather than letting him attack the ball and try to score!

Not sure if this is still the QPR set piece tactics but if they are it's a major problem for Caulkers goal threat imo

-8 is pretty much never worth it. Looking at it individually, i dont see either of your transfers beeing worth a hit and i think thats the way you look at it, imo atleast. You should make no assumptions about Sturridge/Sterling/Liverpool.

      1. Coaly
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 7 months ago

clyne chambers to baines azpi surely worth the hit of pelle to austin (MCI vs. LEI fixture)

then if Sterling shows form then a further -4 to free up the remaining .8 i'd need and gain value doesnt sound too bad with fab on 4 yellows, no?

        1. TeamSteam
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 7 months ago

Why? Chambers still keeps his place since Arsenal have no fit replacements for him, yet. Soton could very well continue to keep it tight. Taking hits for defenders in general are a mistake most of the time. I wouldnt take a hit for Austin over Pellè, either. And from a fans perspective, Liverpool have been utter shaite in most games this season, and Sterling looking nothing like his self of the last 6-7 months of last season. Not looking dangerous at all. Sturrdige coming back from injury doesnt immediately turn either of those things around. If youre worried about Fabs getting suspended, you should wait until he does before you lose him. The amount of yellows needed for suspension goes up to 10 around christmas (unsure of the actual date/gw), so its not like hes guaranteed to get suspended before then.

I posted this the other day:

So just how hard are Southampton's next lot of fixtures for their attack after Villa? Man City (h) - have let in 2 goals in 4 of their last 5 away games. Arsenal (a) - have blown leads in last two games conceding 3 and 2. Man United (h) - have not won away from home yet Burnley (a) - this might be their hardest of this lot! I might prefer their defence to the 3 above who have all sorts of issues at the back right now... I think you might consider losing Clyne but Pelle/Tadic/Mane and other mids might be worth keeping.... This coming from a guy that's done Tadic > Downing - I needed the money for Baines honest!

While this is true, the team as a whole are not comparable to last years one. Much of if could be because Suarez has left and the biggest threat is missing, but at the moment none of our players are really performing even close to par, and this is the problem. I dont think Suarez alone made all of them the players they were/are.

I think you're right but I also think it has been woefully underestimated how big an impact Suarez had on the output of other players.

I'll give an example, before the season started Sky Sports were discussing different teams and came to Pool. Phil Thompson was talking about Sterling and how big a player he'd be for them. He then cut to a clip showing 4 goals that Sterling scored last season, all lovely goals and nice movement. What wasn't pointed out by anyone on that panel was that all 4 goals were a result of a Suarez pass, one of them was a result of Suarez dropping deep, winning the ball and bringing it forward then picking out a lovely pass for Raheem's equally lovely finish.

I think that is a decent example, his impact on these players was very big but that's not to say it is the only factor involved.

Hes getting into scoring positions. Thats more than what you can say about most forwards in this league.

Doesn't mean he'll score. He'll be lucky to get half the chances that he's got so far this season, imo. Why keep a player who has those fixtures when you can swap to Austin/Sakho with better fixtures and similar form? With profit, too.

Doesnt mean he wont, either. Sakho doesnt tempt me at all, as ive stated previously. Austin does, however. Still on the fence if im selling Welbz or Pellè for him though.

Well you can rule welbeck out completely, but Aguero at home and with pens is the standout choice this year

Playing around with what I think could be a good "catch-up" team if you are far behind in MLs etc up untill January WC.. specially if Liverpool start firing with Sturridge back.. think it could do very well untill Jan-WC..

    Fabianski
    Caulker Moreno Cresswell
    Walcott Hazard Sigurdsson Sterling
    Agüero Sturridge Austin

    Krul, Downing, Dummett, Wisdom

Who do you think are the players that have the best possiblity of increasing their avg points significantly in the next gameweeks?

Three Liverpool players? Ive gone to lengths to sell the three i had in my team over the last 5-6 gameweeks. I wouldnt even want one at this moment in time.

I like that defense a lot. Not the popular picks on here so you'll probably get plenty of naysayers, but the stats and fixtures being what they are I think you will be getting some good returns soon from that group.

With that said, nobody can replace Baines, but you've got a collection of attacking defenders there with great fixtures who may well overcome his absence.

I like the enthusiasm with Walcott but I think it may be a bit premature. Until he plays consecutive 90 minute matches its one I'm staying away from. You need more nailed-on-ness from a 9m mid, especially during the December rotation

They have to show they can turn the corner first - Balo injury might just help by forcing a change of system and fostering some spirit. Surely Lambert has to get a run?

Clyne Chambers Fab to Baines Azpi Downing (-4) sound good?

Would mean keeping Pelle through their fixture downturn but to be honest apart from Sturridge there is no one I think is better than Pelle

There is always a way of getting a player. Players get injured, suspended, lose form etc.

Many will get hurt if Pele gets his scoring touch back vs the upcoming opponents, considering how dreadful he has been in the last 3.

If you have Forster, a 4.0 keeper, Alderweireld and a defense that can rotate well and you will sell only 1 of the Soton duo, who would it be?

Forster. You will play him all the time but depend on save points in the tough games.

Alderweireld. You can bench him in the tough games.

    What do you think?

Forster > Fabianski if you don't have Naylor.

I have forster and he has to go. 100% weak link in a team. As you said Alder can be benched. Forster cant and wont get you any attacking returns either

Gosh looks like the protests about water charges here in Ireland are getting a bit out of hand, bomb threats made to a minister's office.

I get people are unhappy about water charges obviously and that's understandable but basically attempting to use terrorism to get your way is much worse...

Baines probably out for one game at most but could still feature against West Ham

No real news on Fab. Will probably play

Colo went from being out for a month to being fine in the blink of a eye. Literally no idea which is true and which is a load of crap
