The Digest – Gameweek 17

Our final glance back at the Gameweek gone by pays tribute to QPR’s penalty-box predator and the rising fortunes at White Hart Lane, whilst we also assess the possible shake-up of Louis van Gaal’s first XI as the injuries ease for United.

The Player

Charlie Austin’s outstanding start to life in the top flight shows no sign of slowing down after a weekend hat-trick took the QPR frontman to 11 goals for the season.

Having steered his side to promotion with 17 strikes in 31 Championship appearances, Austin got off to a slow start in the top flight and netted just twice in the opening eight Gameweeks. Since then, though, his turnaround in Fantasy fortunes has been remarkable – the 6.0-priced forward has racked up nine goals and a pair of assists in his subsequent eight appearances.

Undoubtedly, his home performances have held far more weight. With his side continuing to toil on their travels, Harry Redknapp has ensured the onus is very much on attack at Loftus Road and Austin has been the chief beneficiary – averaging 7.7 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points per appearance in front of his own fans. Granted, just two goals on his travels highlight QPR’s issues away from Loftus Road, but bearing in mind those strikes were at St Mary’s and Stamford Bridge, he’s still more than capable of delivering on the road.

Indeed, in spite of his side’s away struggles, Austin climbed to second in the FPL forward standings on the back of his weekend treble. At a time where Fantasy managers are scouring the market for Sergio Aguero alternatives, his home form alone is worth the investment – three double-figure hauls in his last five at Loftus Road underline his impact, and with Redknapp determined to steer his side away from trouble, Austin’s impact is unlikely to dry up any time soon.

The Team

A home win over Burnley earned Spurs a third straight victory in all competitions as they finally start to settle under Mauricio Pochettino. Once again, Harry Kane was amongst the goals against the Clarets as the youngster continues his remarkable progress as a Fantasy force – he’s now notched 14 times in all competitions this term, the same number as Tottenham’s top scorer in 2013/14, Emmanuel Adebayor, managed over the entire season.

With an output like that, it’s easy to see why few managers subscribe to the idea that Kane’s starts will be managed over the festive period – with over 42,000 transfers in this week in the FPL game, the 5.2-priced frontman is second most popular to Austin. It’s not all about Kane, though; Christian Eriksen’s superb recent form, allied with the first-team return of Nacer Chadli last weekend, affords us options in the centre of the park, too.

At the back, Pochettino finally seems to have decided on his first-choice options. With Kyle Walker returning from injury, the Argentine has a solution to the problematic right-back berth, and with Ben Davies edging past Danny Rose on the opposite flank, Jan Vertonghen and Federico Fazio have been afforded the chance to forge a partnership in the heart of the back-four. Indeed, only last week the Belgian admitted that this consistency of selection has been key to his side’s recent fortunes.

A Boxing Day trip to Leicester affords Spurs the chance to maintain their momentum before Man United and Chelsea roll up to the Lane – with confidence high, though, they could pose that pair plenty of problems, and with Palace, Sunderland and West Brom following directly after, Pochettino’s troops have the chance to step up their bid for that elusive top-four finish.

The Talking Point

It’s credit to Louis van Gaal that, in spite of a terrible run of injuries during his first few months at the Old Trafford helm, United sit in third spot – ten points off the summit.

A draw against Villa may have ended a run of six straight wins for the Red Devils, but with fit-again Radamel Falcao handed a first start since Gameweek 7 and Angel Di Maria back in action after a hamstring injury, Van Gaal’s growing number of attacking options could hand Fantasy managers a festive boost.

Earlier this month, Van Gaal confessed that Robin van Persie had been “a lucky boy” not to be dropped during his lean spell of scoring, with Falcao’s lack of fitness affording the Dutchman guaranteed pitch time. With the United boss now convinced of the Colombian’s sharpness, it was perhaps telling that it was Van Persie who made way on 60 minutes at Villa Park – in spite of his recent scoring form, this was the earliest he’s ever been withdrawn this term.

Falcao’s goal, supplemented by the maximum bonus, came at a time where Wayne Rooney continues to be utilised in central midfield. Encouragingly, the South American has earned points in each of his four league starts, and with the fixtures falling in United’s favour, he could present us with a far more budget-friendly option, at 10.5 to Van Persie’s 12.6.

Similarly, Di Maria’s return to action could spell trouble for Juan Mata once again. The Spaniard has impressed in his fellow midfielder’s absence but Van Gaal has been ruthless with Mata’s pitch time already and there’d be no real surprise if his run of five straight starts came to an end at home to Newcastle on Friday.

With ownership levels of just 2% and 13%, there’s no doubt that, if they can steer clear of further injuries, Falcao and Di Maria could quickly emerge as big-hitting alternatives for our 15-man squads. As the festive fixtures fall in their favour, the United new boys have the chance to help cement their club’s top-three position and play their way back into our Fantasy plans.

My tactic is usually to get 3 expensive strikers, ~2 expensive mids, then fill the rest with in form value players. But this season is different, and it makes me uneasy. There are so many value forwards around and few heavy hitting ones. It makes captaincy more difficult, and a reliable stream of points from the front 3 is missing. My starting front line of Rooney Costa Sturridge all scored GW1, and I thought I was on to a winner, but it quickly broke down as the season wore on.

Anyone else uncomfortable with the lack of big strikers?

No, though the power houses usually are. It's someone that returns almost every week, especially in a favourable fixture. A worry free captain. Bony blanking against QPR, benched against Hull, and lack of an explosive score doesn't put him at that level imo.

It makes it harder - certainly makes captain calls tricky. I've snuggled back under the RVP comfort blanket twice in the past couple of weeks (and managed to miss all the hauls in the process, which learn me). Having said that, the midfield choices seem much more limited; almost all the teams I see on here have a selection from Sanchez, Downing, Hazard, Siggy, Yaya, Boyd + a couple of others. The forward lines are much more variable.

Yes and no. Yes I'm uncomfy with lack of obvious big strikers because it makes choosing ones attack more difficult. No I'm comfy because that difficulty of striker choice is spread to all, and makes the game more of a challenge. Those players who do careful research, visit these boards, etc., should wind up making the correct choices more of the time. Theoretically speaking (writing).

loving the lack of big strikers.....never seen so many different striker options in FPL before which is more fun than everyone having the same big hitters

It makes a good differential. People will captain low priced strikers thinking they are beating the big guys. But the low price strikers play for teams who don't have to score. Top teams have to. Hazard/yaya are very good captaincy choices when people pick the lower priced players.

I agree, the small teams don't consistently score goals. Mids aren't as consistent as strikers usually either, so I'm not sure Haz and Yaya are at the same level as a main striker for a team gunning for the title.

I understand. Bu 1 goal from a midfielder is close to 2 goals from a striker in terms of points. So a midfielder with penalties from a top team is a decent pick

Yes I am. The problem with cheap performing strikers is it makes the game too easy for everyone. Cheap strikers mean people can just blow their cash on whoever is performing in midfield and defence with no real restrictions. Expensive strikers mean careful thought has to go into using a budget more effectively and I think that is one of the areas that requires the most skill in this game.

I agree with this! Cheap strikers means captaincy is more of a gamble and everyone can afford the same big hitting mids. Not an ideal scenario for us with the tactical edge.

Now is the perfect example of form over fixtures. Downing and Austin have tricky fixtures but their form is great. Whereas the Liverpool team has great fixtures but no one is in form. Do most on here make transfers based on form of fixtures. This week I did Wisdom-->O'shea mainly do to Sunderland's defence looking solid (and a few nice fixtures).

Sanchez imo has a big risk, but I still think he's a good chance of 60mins.
Haz will play if oscar is back, fabs back deep and costa could earn a rest due to poor form so he's ready for away tougher fixtures.

    Hey guys. How's it going?

I like my team and so far I'm thinking I'll save, thoughts? Of course if anybody is ruled out that might change, but I reckon they'll all make it.

You'll probably need to lose Yun soon, maybe next GW when you can decide which of RVP and Costa you are happier to lose. Or even Alexis.

Just one of them. The bench is quite weak and Yun will be gone soon. Easy to raise some money selling one of the forwards but even something like Sanchez > ADM would raise enough to buy most defenders. Chances are you'll be needing that bench in a week or so.

I have no clue what to do this GW, so any suggestions would be appreciated. Fell out of the top 10k for the first time all year last week, from 6k to 14k now. Still leading in three of my MLs at least.

    Heaton (McCarthy)
    Azpi, O'Shea, Wisdom (Duff, Moore)
    Hazard, Sanchez, Sterling, Siggy (Marney)
    Costa, Rooney, Benteke

1 FT, no WC, 0.3m in the bank

I was thinking Moore --> Hutton, but not having Downing/Austin is directly what killed me last GW. What would you do?

    1. Wilshere Knowledge
      • 10 Years

      I'd do Duff to Hutton.

      Moore may play with rotation.

I'd swap benteke with austin. I'd go further and either swap siggy with downing or use the money from austin swap to upgrade marney to downing.

I have Welbeck at 7.0m in my squad. He's listed as 7.2m in the game, and fplstatistics have him to fall tonight.

When he falls to 7.1m, will he reduce to 6.9m in my team? Or is this 0.2m acting as a buffer?

    Hazard, Sanchez, YaYa, Siggy, Albrighton
    Benteke, Costa, Austin

Not doing their checks and posting results. Especially when asked.

Thanks Spat. Feels a little scary. I know though I want Boring Milner for the next three anyway and that will give me the time to get 2 FTs

Want to bring in Silva for Boyd. Should I go for:

    A) Baines -> 3.9 bench fodder (leaving me with Ivan, Zaba, Bertrand at the back)
    B) Rooney -> 7.5 (Kane?)

I think if you look more closely, Giroud is a gamble this week if your wasting you FT. You will need him to score more than 6 points to make the move worthwhile and captain him. Then your playing catchup over the following GW's.

He is only essential this week, I would regard Benteke, Bony/Jovetic and Austin solid choices after Friday. Maybe a United striker might make it into the mix also.

The midfield and defence will be fairly template I think. There isint many choices to add to it.

Silva - probably the best bet playing with the most in firm team but unlikely to hit that haul again
Sterling - Dubious over him, poor finished, playing in a poor team
Eriksen - Good fixture this week but that's it similar to the Giroud situation

It's a long road don't take the shortcut or you'll end up getting lost

Giroud is essential for 1 week?
