This Much We Know – Gameweek 25

As the dust settles on the midweek matches, we take a look at some of the lessons learned. Arsenal’s pair of playmakers and the upturn in forward options at both ends of the price brackets give us plenty to contemplate.

Ozil is stealing Santi’s limelight…
Handed another start on the left as Arsene Wenger opted for Alexis Sanchez up front against Leicester, the German’s form continued with a pair of assists in the 2-1 triumph. Since recovering from injury, Ozil has started each of the last three Gameweeks and has produced returns on every occasion for a total of 32 points, courtesy of two goals, three assist and six bonus points. Cazorla – the only other Arsenal heavy-hitter to also start the last three – seems to have tailed off by comparison and after producing a converted penalty and two assists against Villa, has delivered back-to-back blanks as Ozil becomes increasingly influential for the Gunners in the final third.

N’Doye could save the Tigers…
A vital home win over Villa suggested Hull have the appetite for a relegation scrap as Steve Bruce’s side scrambled clear of the bottom three. Fundamental to Tuesday’s triumph was the decision to partner Nikica Jelavic and new boy Dame N’Doye up top as the Tigers tore into their lacklustre visitors in Paul Lambert’s last match in charge. Prior to their midweek result, no Hull forward had played a part in more than one goal in any given Gameweek – on his first start for the club, N’Doye delivered a goal and assist and with QPR, Sunderland and Leicester in the next four, has the chance to fire the Tigers up the table.

’Arry’s exit might keep the R’s afloat…
Few, if any, gave QPR a fighting chance as they made their way to Sunderland. Having lost every away match under Harry Redknapp, the loss of top scorer Charlie Austin suggested they’d offer little resistance at the Stadium of Light but it seems that their former manager’s departure may be a blessing in disguise after Chris Ramsey orchestrated a shock 2-0 win. Ramsey’s task has been made that bit tougher after midweek scorer Leroy Fer was ruled out for ten weeks with a knee injury but his tactical tinkering proved decisive on Wearside. With Fer and the likes of Niko Krancjar and Matty Phillips fielded in their favoured positions and Rio Ferdinand alongside Steven Caulker at the back, Ramsey’s QPR already has a different feel about it.

Sturridge is back in business…
With Raheem Sterling sidelined through injury, the forward was handed his first start since Gameweek 3 as Liverpool edged past Spurs in a five-goal thriller at Anfield. Sturridge may have failed to score but his pair of assists served up an eight-point haul and brought him back onto our radars as Brendan Rodgers’ side continue their relentless climb up the table. As we noted in yesterday’s Technical Area article, Sturridge’s underlying stats since returning from injury are superior to last season’s and suggest that the Fantasy returns should be on the rise if he can start to stick away his opportunities.
as is Aguero…
A two-goal haul at Stoke last night finally brought the City striker’s barren run to an end. Having managed just two assists in four appearances prior to the Britannia visit, Aguero had disappointed since returning from injury but his sparkling display – allied with the return of Yaya Toure – bodes well for Fantasy managers ahead of clashes with Newcastle, Leicester and Burnley in the next four. With Diego Costa now free from suspension and Sturridge also in the mix, the battle of the premium priced strikers is set to intensify.

Chelsea lack bite without Costa…
There’s no question that the Blues suffer in the final third without their star striker. Jose Mourinho’s side may have won four and drawn two of the six league matches without Costa on board but, as we saw against Everton last night, they struggle to put away opponents and have triumphed by more than a single strike in just one of those four victories. Chelsea have notched 1.7 goals per match when Costa has been missing but that average leaps to 2.4 when he’s around – potentially good news for owners of Eden Hazard after the Belgian managed just one goal and assist over Costa’s three-match suspension.

We can’t write Ings off…
Harry Kane aside, there are few forwards quite as consistent as the Burnley forward right now. After finding the net just once in the opening 11 Gameweeks, Ings was slow in making his mark in the top-flight but eight goals and four assists over the subsequent 14 rounds of fixtures underlines the transformation. Impressively, Ings’ midweek strike at Old Trafford means he has produced points in ten of his last 14 league appearances and it’s fair to say if the Clarets are to get any joy out of a brutal next few matches (che, SWA, liv, MCY, sou, TOT, ARS), he needs to continue that form.

Pardew’s spoilt for choice…
The Palace boss has a couple of substitutes to thanks for salvaging a point at home to former club Newcastle. Fraizer Campbell had played just four minutes of Pardew’s first four matches in charge but, after being sent on as a replacement for the injured Yaya Sanogo, fired the equaliser courtesy of a Yannick Bolasie assist. Eased back into action after returning from the African Cup of Nations, Bolasie looks poised to challenge Jason Puncheon and Wilfried Zaha for the wide roles, whilst Campbell’s strike – allied with the decision to bench Dwight Gayle – look set to cause Fantasy managers a real headache.

Ideye may be Pulis’ main man…
With Victor Anichebe calling off due to yet another injury, the Baggies summer signing grabbed his chance as the lone striker in a crucial win over Swansea. Having notched as a sub in the previous Gameweek, Ideye’s goal and assist in the 2-0 victory means he’s now played a part in three of West Brom’s last four strikes. With Sunderland, Villa, Stoke and QPR in four of the next six, the Nigerian – who had scored just a single goal due to limited pitch time under Alan Irvine – is suddenly another name to consider in the budget bracket.

Not having Chelsea (stuck with Cahill) or Saints (dropped Gardos for Aldy two GWs ago, paid for it dearly) defensive cover has killed me lately. Hoping Aldy is back soon, but with the blanks looming, would you...

    A. Swap Cahill for Azpi now and stop the bleeding
    B. Play Aldy/Bellerin/PvA next GW and save FT to fill empty spots without taking a hit

Cahill has to go, but if Toby is fit that transfer can wait a week given those three you can send out. Also probably worth starting Cahill anyway and just hope he gets the start at this point...although that 90' cameo last game surely weighs heavy...

Because he's on my team, mainly, and also because he's their number one target on set pieces and hasn't nicked one all season. Law of averages...and that...or he will just finish the season on zero goals and it will be stinky.

But Walters and Colback have HOME fixtures in GW27 (blanks) and Walters has a decente fixture this GW too.

Yeah I mean taking a second look at it, I wouldn't shift Sterling out if he is determined to be fit. Also probably wouldn't even bother doing the Wollscheid transfer, because in reality you are doing that for a hit since he directly leads to you taking a hit the following to bring in Costa and Eriksen. I'd rather start ten men and Wisdom and not take a hit in GW28, if that makes sense.

But isn't Wisdom a long term problem for him anyway?

It depends how often he plays Wisdom's replacement. He still has four defenders who are all quite good so he may well be able to get away with it a little while longer. Transfers so precious in front of DGWs...lots to work out.

Good point in Terry(blank) Pva/Bell/Clyne he has sure starters and Coolio is good for blank (bench Haz)
                Then he has Kane (blank)
                Which leaves him
3-4-2 ie 10 playing he (CA) could chance Bruce/ Wolly / Mcauley and have 11 out it may only cost 2pts and may pay for itself and also rids him of a problem like Wisdom-I would -4 wisdom tbh.

That sounds better. At least you have a bit more points potential there in midfield. But then again, you could just get Wollscheid and forget Walters entirely. You will have another good rotational cog in your defensive line and you will likely not play Walters again for quite some time if ever. Lots of choices! Quite a tricky time this is.

Looks great. Doing the same GW28 transfers myself without the hit, even if Chelsea don't have a double. Already own ADM, and the ADM-at-home-to-Sunderland-when-Chelsea-and-Spurs-has-blank-then-transferring-to-Eriksen-with-a-DGW-against-SWA-and-qpr is just perfect.

I would consider Haidara instead of Wollscheid btw.

Yes I can because I already have 2 FTs that I save previously.

So I save one more this week and I have 3, then I lose two to get Wollscheid and ADM and get one more from that week and I have two again to GW28.

Pretty sure you can't have 3 FT's at any time. 2 is the max one can have at any one time.

Why so? Blanked the last few "easier" games, or is it more of a case of Clyne being unlikely to keep a CS vs Liverpool?

Punchy has been close in each of the last two games. Could have had a goal in each easily. He's not in blinding form but he's not looked hopeless either. I really don't see a Soton clean and in that case I'd go with the attacker, personally.

Why would Clyne be unlikely to keep a CS vs Pool? We don't know how to break down a solid defence (ref the Merseyside-derby, C1C-semis and Bolton in the FA Cup).

I'd play Clyne. Playing him myself.

Liverpool just look like they are starting to click. They are creating sooo many chances, and they will be so up for this game. They really need the three points to push on for the top four and I can't see them being kept out. Just how I see it, mate!

Sure. I definately see the rationale behind it. And I would be more than happy to learn that you were right. It's just that we seem to run out of ideas early in the games when we play compact defences such as Soton's.

I also think we'll settle for a draw tbh. A loss here with a United win against a poor looking Swansea would be too much of a blow.

    Wisdom, Terry, Wasi, PVA, Dummett

    Boyd, Chadli, Hazard, Cazorla, Siggy

Placeholder for Eriksen as 4th mid, only for 2 GW, no chelsea, spurs or arsenal:

    A. Downing (tot,CRY)
    B. ADM (swa, SUN)
    C. Mane (LIV, wba)
    D. Walters (avl, HUL) if knee holds
    E. Others ? Yaya 0.1 too expensive..

not very excited by any of them to be honest, I'd give walters a shot, that is if we get news that he WILL play.

quite enjoyed the cricket World Cup opening ceremony last night. Now I'm not so sure about playing fantasy CWC. Ditto what Ryan said re: Elia. Haidara needs more than two games to be nailed, I think, and Dummett seems quite a tidy little player to me. Haidara seems first choice though certainly. I'm surprised Dummett hasn't come in for Williamson at center half.

What do we think of Arnautovic as a punt?

His underlying stats is brilliant, as shown by the many stats tables for midfielders on here. The excellent assist against City was long overdue, as it's pretty hard to understand why he only had one - 1 - assist given all his crosses, corners and free kicks. During the two FA-cup-matches in january he scored once and assisted twice. As we remember from last year he wasn't that productive in the first half of the season, before he showed his real class in the second half. The signs are now pointing at a possible rediscovery of this form as we're entering the final third of the season.

(Obviously, arguments could be made that Walters and Moses are better value, but let's say money is no issue.)

I thought he had regained his spot now? 60+ mins for eight gameweeks in a row (excluding when he was injured last gw). Bojan injured so he can play behind the striker allowing Walters to play wide, or vice versa. Can't see Crouch starting on a regular basis.

Arnie really is class when at his best, and surely good enough to be nailed on for Stoke. Even if it comes down to him vs Walters to allow Diouf and Crouch up top, he should play. Walters is a very limited player - the flukey hattrick doesn't change that.

I agree with you mostly here. He was dropped against Newcastle in favor of Ireland - could have just needed a rest though. The boy does have just two assists on the season and zero goals. Would be a bold pick, but if you see something there getting a player before a hot streak is what makes this game the most fun to me.

Wasn't dropped, he had an injury. I've been monitoring him. Late fitness test before the City-game, declared fit and played 90.

Yeah, it would be the definition of a punt. But again, as i mentioned in the original post, he has 1 goal and 2 assists in the last two matches in the FA cup to his name aswell. Tho that was against weaker opposition, of course. Hope he plays again this weekend so I can monitor further.

I had him in my GW1 team this year and he really burned me badly...so I haven't gotten over that yet. But as Ryan mentions they do have quite a few midfield options so his minutes are very much in question. I do like him though in general.

Got subbed off early v QPR and didn't play v Newcastle because of a minor injury, so stats from recent games isn't a fair way to judge him.

I fear for your defence if you have those two losers in. My guess would be Wisdom as he seems out of favour in a bit of an overrated defence.

My other defence options are Terry / Fonte / Bellerin, so not all bad.

He has flashes of being a really competent player but then has disastrous moments in games as well. Still learning on the job, but he is very much their future I think. Started last two over Fazio so seems he's a good shout for you in draft.

Alright DZ, one question. Who in your opinion should get the chopping block first?
    (2 FT's and 1.4 ITB_
    A) Andre Wisdom
    B) or get Sanchez

    1. crteer
      • 9 Years

Depends if you have coverage for the blank. Not many people do, and so if not, Wisdom needs to go.

Consensus now it seems, cheers Ryan. Guess I could gamble on going without Sanchez for one more week. For the record, I'd need 2 FT's to get Sanchez in. So I'm looking at Silva + Caz out or Silva + Clichy out

True, although he's always been though fwiw. I knew what I was getting myself into, and he has the creative threat in 30 minutes to warrant a spot on the bench IMO.

While we're at it. Been taking a long hard look at Dembele. Stats seem just so-so but I like watching him play and see him growing in confidence each game. Could be a nice pick for the double. It's only been a short run of games but it seems he's first choice now, I guess, with Chadli on the outside looking in. If Chadli came back in would it be more likely that Dembele drops or Lamela? Anyone have any insight on that one?

Yeah only two spots for Chadli Dembele and Lamela. I think Lamela is the worst of the trio, yet he is Poch's compatriot lovechild so he has that in his corner.

I am surprised he hasn't done already. It seems like such a no brainer to drop Lamela for him, but just no idea what Poch will do. Could well keep Chadli as an impact sub for all we know.

As you say, he's looked good despite his returns / stats.

Looking at Lamela on the other hand, has not looked his worth for quite some time.. Given this, I would say that he would drop to the bench in favour of Chadli/Dembele - but then again, I'm not Pochettino.

I may do JWP to Dembele myself for the DGW, I think I'd gather more info him before the deadline and have a more secure opinion on him by then. Good DGW option at 5.2 though for sure, one to keep eye on as a sneaky differential after the masses do midprice mid to Eriksen
