This Much We Know – Gameweek 25

As the dust settles on the midweek matches, we take a look at some of the lessons learned. Arsenal’s pair of playmakers and the upturn in forward options at both ends of the price brackets give us plenty to contemplate.

Ozil is stealing Santi’s limelight…
Handed another start on the left as Arsene Wenger opted for Alexis Sanchez up front against Leicester, the German’s form continued with a pair of assists in the 2-1 triumph. Since recovering from injury, Ozil has started each of the last three Gameweeks and has produced returns on every occasion for a total of 32 points, courtesy of two goals, three assist and six bonus points. Cazorla – the only other Arsenal heavy-hitter to also start the last three – seems to have tailed off by comparison and after producing a converted penalty and two assists against Villa, has delivered back-to-back blanks as Ozil becomes increasingly influential for the Gunners in the final third.

N’Doye could save the Tigers…
A vital home win over Villa suggested Hull have the appetite for a relegation scrap as Steve Bruce’s side scrambled clear of the bottom three. Fundamental to Tuesday’s triumph was the decision to partner Nikica Jelavic and new boy Dame N’Doye up top as the Tigers tore into their lacklustre visitors in Paul Lambert’s last match in charge. Prior to their midweek result, no Hull forward had played a part in more than one goal in any given Gameweek – on his first start for the club, N’Doye delivered a goal and assist and with QPR, Sunderland and Leicester in the next four, has the chance to fire the Tigers up the table.

’Arry’s exit might keep the R’s afloat…
Few, if any, gave QPR a fighting chance as they made their way to Sunderland. Having lost every away match under Harry Redknapp, the loss of top scorer Charlie Austin suggested they’d offer little resistance at the Stadium of Light but it seems that their former manager’s departure may be a blessing in disguise after Chris Ramsey orchestrated a shock 2-0 win. Ramsey’s task has been made that bit tougher after midweek scorer Leroy Fer was ruled out for ten weeks with a knee injury but his tactical tinkering proved decisive on Wearside. With Fer and the likes of Niko Krancjar and Matty Phillips fielded in their favoured positions and Rio Ferdinand alongside Steven Caulker at the back, Ramsey’s QPR already has a different feel about it.

Sturridge is back in business…
With Raheem Sterling sidelined through injury, the forward was handed his first start since Gameweek 3 as Liverpool edged past Spurs in a five-goal thriller at Anfield. Sturridge may have failed to score but his pair of assists served up an eight-point haul and brought him back onto our radars as Brendan Rodgers’ side continue their relentless climb up the table. As we noted in yesterday’s Technical Area article, Sturridge’s underlying stats since returning from injury are superior to last season’s and suggest that the Fantasy returns should be on the rise if he can start to stick away his opportunities.
as is Aguero…
A two-goal haul at Stoke last night finally brought the City striker’s barren run to an end. Having managed just two assists in four appearances prior to the Britannia visit, Aguero had disappointed since returning from injury but his sparkling display – allied with the return of Yaya Toure – bodes well for Fantasy managers ahead of clashes with Newcastle, Leicester and Burnley in the next four. With Diego Costa now free from suspension and Sturridge also in the mix, the battle of the premium priced strikers is set to intensify.

Chelsea lack bite without Costa…
There’s no question that the Blues suffer in the final third without their star striker. Jose Mourinho’s side may have won four and drawn two of the six league matches without Costa on board but, as we saw against Everton last night, they struggle to put away opponents and have triumphed by more than a single strike in just one of those four victories. Chelsea have notched 1.7 goals per match when Costa has been missing but that average leaps to 2.4 when he’s around – potentially good news for owners of Eden Hazard after the Belgian managed just one goal and assist over Costa’s three-match suspension.

We can’t write Ings off…
Harry Kane aside, there are few forwards quite as consistent as the Burnley forward right now. After finding the net just once in the opening 11 Gameweeks, Ings was slow in making his mark in the top-flight but eight goals and four assists over the subsequent 14 rounds of fixtures underlines the transformation. Impressively, Ings’ midweek strike at Old Trafford means he has produced points in ten of his last 14 league appearances and it’s fair to say if the Clarets are to get any joy out of a brutal next few matches (che, SWA, liv, MCY, sou, TOT, ARS), he needs to continue that form.

Pardew’s spoilt for choice…
The Palace boss has a couple of substitutes to thanks for salvaging a point at home to former club Newcastle. Fraizer Campbell had played just four minutes of Pardew’s first four matches in charge but, after being sent on as a replacement for the injured Yaya Sanogo, fired the equaliser courtesy of a Yannick Bolasie assist. Eased back into action after returning from the African Cup of Nations, Bolasie looks poised to challenge Jason Puncheon and Wilfried Zaha for the wide roles, whilst Campbell’s strike – allied with the decision to bench Dwight Gayle – look set to cause Fantasy managers a real headache.

Ideye may be Pulis’ main man…
With Victor Anichebe calling off due to yet another injury, the Baggies summer signing grabbed his chance as the lone striker in a crucial win over Swansea. Having notched as a sub in the previous Gameweek, Ideye’s goal and assist in the 2-0 victory means he’s now played a part in three of West Brom’s last four strikes. With Sunderland, Villa, Stoke and QPR in four of the next six, the Nigerian – who had scored just a single goal due to limited pitch time under Alan Irvine – is suddenly another name to consider in the budget bracket.

I don't take the game seriously and a good/bad score isn't important to me in any way. I guess I am.

Tbh I will probably go for Haz as a think he will be buzzing with the new contract thing and will really want to show he's worth every penny and with Cesc back he could really explode.

It was going well until I went on holiday over Christmas and didn't pay any attention, plummeted down the rankings. Hovering around the 10k mark now so it could still end up OK.

Man that's still a good rank. Potential for a solid top 5k finish.

I'm currently ranked 15k. Had an awful period at Xmas where I couldn't catch a break. Hopefully things turning for the better.

    Morning chaps,

So, I need to get rid of Duff and Wisdom urgently as they aren't playing and we have a blank gameweek coming up where we will all need to bench circa 3 players so will need playing subs, ideally with ok games,

It's most likely that our 4th and 5th subs will be called into play. Some of you will have this in order but a lot won't so please let's brainstorm for some good options in the cheap price bracket (4.5 and under):

    FIXTURES FIRST
Stoke - GW27 Hull at home followed by EVE wba CPL che whm - GOOD
Hull - GW27 Stoke away followed by SUN lei CHE swa sot - OK
Villa - GW27 Newc away followed by WBA sun SWA mun tot
WestHam - GW27 CPL at home followed by CHE ars SUN lei STO - GOOD/OK
Newcastle - GW27 AVL home followed by MUN eve ARS sun liv - OK/tough
Burnley - GW27 SWA home followed by liv MCI sot TOT ARS - OUCH! no thanks
Swansea - GW27 Burnley away followed by tot LIC avl HUL EVE - GOOD

    Options:

    Stoke:
Philipp Wollscheid - 4.5 - Looks to be nailed on
Marc Muniesa - 4.4 - less nailed but an option

    Hull:
Bruce or McShane - both 3.9 - which is more nailed on? Any other options here?

    Villa:
Jores Okore - 4.3 - seems nailed on, but its still Villa.....

    Westham:
James Tomkins cheapest at 4.8 - too expensive for me

    Newcastle:
Massaido Haidara - 4.1 has played last few
Michael Williamson - 4.3 - played last few
Who is more nailed, who will lose out when Dummett comes back?

    Burnley:
Michael Keane - 4.4 - could be useful for a one game stop gap GW27 but not long term

    Swans:
    Kyle Naughton - 4.3 - looks a good option

Any other options? What are you doing? Thanks

Was wondering if anyone can answer this question about the fantasy cricket game for me ?

If I choose a power player (C) for the first game .. Nz vs SL and then choose another Power Player for the Aus vs Eng game which start the 3 hours after the first game. Do I get double points for both players in each match or only the one I choose at that time.

    I hope that made sense.

Excellent article. It's the lolers at others' misfortunes that really needle me.

It happened a couple of weeks ago where a lot of people had PVA on their bench (often due to having Panti in goal) vs Burnley. Burnley have scored 2+ goals in 5 of their last 6 now - that game excepted - so it was a good idea not to double up on Sunderland's defence.

After the event, everyone laughs that people haven't played PVA when he keeps a clean sheet and gets an assist, and I even had an argument explaining why it made sense at the time. Got ganged up on for being 'bitter' (even though I got his points anyway), even though I was just explaining it's easy to know the result after it's finished, and that no-one goes out of their way to make illogical decisions.

There is, because Toby has played every minute for Southampton when fit and has been one of the more under-the-radar successes of that Southampton backbone this season.

If fit, he plays, just like, say, Terry would for Chelsea.

                  Sorry, I'll re-phrase.

You can of course be confident, but I don't think you can be sure.

This is his first long lay off, and Southampton have just kept two clean sheets.

it's beyond the realms of possibility that Koeman will stick.

                    I highly doubt that.

Refer to the above statement. Southampton have kept clean sheets all season, keeping two in a row won't change who their nailed-on CB's are.

Yeah I genuinely don't think you need to worry about this. Toby slots straight in the moment he's had a week of training. Liverpool isn't a good game to buy him for anyway, but he'll be in from then on for me.

Fair enough, I too may wait a week anyway just because it is a pretty luxury transfer, may as well save in case there are any big injuries.

                        It probably won't, no.

By the way, I had a quick look on the Southampton forums earlier today and they all assumed he would walk straight back into the team when fit, some actually said that they desperately needed him back.

Young and Rooney... I guess that wasn't too bad - ok Young was just herd mentality at the time.

But we have all matured since then - I hope 🙂

I had Ashley Young, Alex Bruce who played 45 mins of a clean sheet and Kyle Naughton who got sent off while Spurs got a clean sheet...

Foster is the only player that I have kept throughout.

With many thinking of captaining Harry Kane, isn't it time for an appraisal of how good he is, and how we think his career will progress?

I really hope Chelsea have a DGW28 as i don't want 3 Spurs and don't want any Qpr players.
It would be Terry, Hazard, Costa, Eriksen and Kane.

why he risked him against Brighton at 1-3 for Arsnl? Just to be kicked and smashed several times and then to get this harmsting that ruled him out for a couple of weeks.. Wenger is a "genious"

    Wildcard holders:-

There been lots of talk about the potential DGW upcoming, with consensus being it will happen in GW34 for the semi final in GW33 rearrangement.

Most people are then hoping for arsenal, liverpool, United and the one big clubs to go through. I think this may be slightly flawed IF you still hold yor Wildcard.

Whilst undeniably those teams mentioned have the best players it's precisely that reason that Wildcard holders should be hoping that crystal palace beat Liverpool this weekend.

Palace have WBA at home in GW 33 and Hull at home in GW34. Baring in mind 33 will be a blank those without wildcards might struggle to fills with palace players whilst pushing that button cooks Max out for arguably the 2 best fixtures you can get.

There is a slight caveat in that liverpool also have awesomeness fixtures and the immediate fixtures after gw34 for palace are terrible.

Other teams are in the same boat. Leicester (SWA, bur) and Man City (WHM, AVL) are the others we'd want. Man City would need West Ham progressing as they are out.

Anyway, just a thought that some unsexy teams progressing could give us WC holders more advantage than the big 4.

I have my WC and WBA and HULL at home looks very tempting. Problem comes with the following games though. Chelsea, United, liverpool.

Pool would have the exact same 2 teams, hull and Wba, but away.
