Dugout Discussion

The Dugout Discussion – Swansea vs Liverpool

A dire Gameweek 29 limps to its conclusion this evening as Swansea and Liverpool go head-to-head at the Liberty. Brendan Rodgers returns to his former club having guided the Reds to a 12-match unbeaten run since moving to a 3-4-2-1 formation and the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge have the chance to get amongst the points against a defence with a single shut-out in six in front of their own fans.

At the back, the visitors have been a consistent source of clean sheets in recent matches. The Merseysiders have kept out their opponents in six of the last eight Gameweeks and have Martin Skrtel available after the Slovakian recovered from a head knock that forced him off on a stretcher against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup stalemate last time out. Mamadou Sakho also returns as one of three centre-backs as Dejan Lovren drops to the bench. Rodgers has made further changes in the wing-back roles, with Glen Johnson and Lazar Markovic dropping to the bench: Alberto Moreno is recalled on the left while Raheem Sterling looks to be deployed on the right.

The hosts, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back from their 3-2 loss at Spurs in Gameweek 28. Prior to that defeat, Garry Monkโ€™s men had registered back-to-back victories and earned three points in their previous match at the Liberty, courtesy of a 2-1 win over United.

Gylfi Sigurdsson was back in the goals last time out and has the upcoming fixtures to earn himself a place in our five-man midfields again, whilst Ki Sung-Yeung has notched three times in the last five and, at 5.1 in FPL, is staking a claim as a cheap budget option.

The teamsheet finds Monk forced into one change as Jordi Amat comes in for Federico Fernรกndez who misses out for family reasons. Up front, Bafetimbi Gomis is available to lead the line after recovering from his collapse at White Hart Lane in the previous Gameweek.

    Morning all,

    Thinking of replacing with de gea with ospina to free up funds for Terry to Ivan. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

    @Innsie

    The one time i ever captained a defender was Coleman vs FUL. Netted a nice 10x2, They conceded in injury time aswell if i recall correctly. Could've been awesome.

    Go with your gut if you want to go Fonte.

      Would not say essential for Giroud. Saints double can work out very well. Though it would be great if you have the like of Che, Wba, Ars,Liv for coverage over the next few GW's.

                  Yeah he seems to love having Ramsey in the side to link up with. I still wouldn't call him a "clear" best captain option this gw though.

    A)Sanchez + PVA + sturridge > Ivan + Silva + giroud (-4)

    Some advice sought - first priority is to fix the defence, get rid of PvA and find a way to get Ivan in. Wrong GW to get a Liverpool defender, I think.

    Panti - Hamer
    Terry - Clyne - Dawson - Baird - PvA
    Hazard - Øzil - Eriksen - Silva - Boyd
    Aguero - Giroud - Kane

    1FT, £2.5

    For upcoming GW, looking at following use of FT:
    a) Clyne + Pva -> Ivan + Alderweireld -4 pts
    b) Terry -> Ivan
    c) Pva -> Alderweireld , and get Ivan next GW.
    d) suggestions ??

    For anyone interested I've been using the 3/5/2 format since GW22. I've now done the maths and in that time I have amassed 432 points. I am now chasing a 35 point deficit in my ML as apposed to having a 45 point cushion. So this GW week I will revert back to 3/4/3 and remove Cisse and welcome Giroud to the team.

    It's going to be a pretty template frontline though of Kane Augero and Giroud. And I can't help but feel like mixing it up by removing Aguero for Costa. Could be a bad move. A very bad move. But at least it will make it interesting. And that's what this game is all about taking risks, mixing it up, rightly or wrongly. Because when it's right it great. And when it's wrong, well we don't talk about that!

      I think people have to realise that there isn't that much in it between Costa and Aguero right now. Yet you look at the ownership levels in the top 10k and its like what? why is it so lopsided. Costa is an excellent SAFE differential right now.

                Ryan, I wasn't commenting on you or your team, don't take it so personally. Just making a fairly innocuous general observation.

                Austin, Hutton, Given, Pantilimon, PvA, Sterling, Coutinho, Moreno, Skrtel, Sturridge are all players that quite a few people own.

                A lot of chickens will come home to roost in GW33. That's all I'm pointing out.

                    • 9 Years
                    9 years, 3 months ago

                    PvA is massively owned. Hutton is popular. Many have 1-2 Liverpool. Austin is highly owned. Add 3 Arsenal and you have a problem.

                    But my actual observation is about benched value in GW33. Sanchez+Giroud+Bellerin+Pantilimon is around £29m on the bench if you have 3 Arsenal and you then have to remove any others from the 6 teams mentioned if you want to field 11.

                    That's why I think bringing more Arsenal in now is quite short-sighted for many managers, especially if they are taking hits to do so. Can't see anything so controversial about that.

                    1. Ryan

                      Yes they are highly owned when you view them as individuals but they certainly aren't highly owned as combinations. If they were then said teams would be in a crisis right now and obviously luxury transfers wouldn't be wise.

                      The mistake you are making here is there are still a good few GW's to go before GW33. You are focusing on 1 GW and neglecting GW30, 31 and 32. Then of course you are neglecting the extra fixture in GW34 assuming that is a DGW. Who is short sighted now?

                        Eh, how was my last comment personal? If you are suggesting to people with loads of players from that list of dreadful FPL teams then I agree with your point.

                        However a lot of peoples teams are actually alright and can afford to have an extra Arsenal player. Benched value is also irrelevant in GW33 if you look at all fixtures between now and GW34

                    Yes, you are correct. Assuming you just stick the £3m in your bank and never use it. I guess that's the strategy I must be missing.

    innsie quality post on kane before. I often look at formation effects as well as personnel but i'd overlooked this one. makes perfect sense too you'd expect that effect from 3 cb's. food for thought on my armband.

    Ivanovic Clyne Naughton Moreno VanA
    Fab Sanchez Boyd Downing Eriksen
    Aguero Kane Giroud

    Got 2 FT and 0.5 in the bank

    Thinking of:

    B Aguero + Downing ----> Costa + Mane

      Henderson is a real option. Would be interested to know if he's done better since Gerrard has been out. And with Stevie returning, what affect that could have on Henderson.

        Henderson is just lucky.

          That luck has taken him into the top 10 midfielders though - consistently lucky?. And at 6.4..

            I agree, Im just pulling the leg of a top 300 overall poster this morning that was shooting down Hendo because of his SiB and playing position.

        Yeah I'm sure he was still taking the set pieces when gerrard came on yesterday. Although Manes fixtures are better and doesn't blank in 33.

        I can't understand why people are still going on about Siggy.
        I must be missing something. What about him do you like? Surely, Henderson is a better option.

        For me it's between 2 and 4.
