Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Sturridge Could Be Out for Season

Daniel Sturridge could miss the rest of the season for Liverpool. Hull could welcome back Mo Diame for this evening’s encounter with the Merseysiders. Diego Costa remains a real doubt for Chelsea’s trip to Leicester, whilst Nigel Pearson considers ringing the changes against the champions-elect.

Sturridge return doubtful this campaign

Daniel Sturridge’s season has been hit hard by a bevy of injuries – the latest of which could keep him sidelined for the remainder of the campaign. Speaking on the English striker’s ongoing travails in yesterday’s press conference, Brendan Rodgers insisted that the club would strive to get him back to full fitness but wouldn’t compromise his long-term health.

“When he’s been fit he’s been brilliant for the team, the key now is to see if we can get him back fit and consistently playing. We’ll see if that’s going to be this season or the pre-season. We’ll do what’s in the best interests of him; we have to protect Daniel and make sure he’s going to be here over the next number of years, playing and playing to the level that we all know he can.”

The Scout Says: In the absence of even a tentative return date, it looks increasingly likely that Sturridge will play no further part this campaign. Raheem Sterling had been the player touted to assume the goal scoring mantle in his stead, yet that didn’t transpire on the weekend, with the fleet-footed winger failing to fashion a single shot against West Brom at the weekend – as compared to Philippe Coutinho’s nine efforts on goal. Those who handed Sterling the captaincy over Eden Hazard will hope that Hull’s defence is more obliging than the Baggies’ rejuvenated rearguard. There’s promise in that respect, given that Steve Bruce’s men conceded the fourth-highest number of big chances (eight) in the last four Gameweeks, shipping eight goals in the process.

Mourinho eschews heavy rotation for Foxes tie

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho does not intend to name many alterations to his starting line-up when the Blues roll up to the King Power Stadium tomorrow night for their second match in four days.

“I don’t plan to make many changes. I know Leicester played on Saturday and we played on Sunday, but we will try to recover the players as best we can. We will leave the young players here to play their cup final against Man City so we don’t take them with us. Our squad is very short with the injuries we have and so there is no space for a lot of rotation.”

Speaking on the fitness of some of his key stars, the Portuguese boss admitted he’s unlikely to take a gamble on playing Diego Costa – in light of his propensity for injury setbacks – while Oscar was discharged from the hospital and slept at home following a serious collision with Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina on the weekend.

“I don’t know about Diego Costa. I have to think about if it deserves a gamble or if we wait a few more days to be completely sure. If it was a player without an injury history I would play him tomorrow, but because he is a player with a history I have to think about that. I really don’t know how Oscar is but the most important thing is that he is not in hospital. He went immediately to his house yesterday, slept at home, and he should be arriving [today].”

The Scout Says: Considering that Costa sustained a fresh hamstring injury the last time Mourinho took a calculated risk starting him, next weekend’s home clash with Palace now appears to be a more realistic return date. As the Blues manager showed against Arsenal, though, he has no qualms over utilising a false nine system to deal with his lack of strikers, with Loic Remy also missing out this evening. Indeed, there’s a possibility that if Chelsea clinch the title by the weekend, Mourinho could use Costa sparingly for the remaining matches in order to rest his dodgy hamstrings – a real concern for the forward’s 28% ownership.

Diame could return for Liverpool clash

Hull City manager Steve Bruce could welcome back Mo Diame and Andrew Robertson to his squad for their home tie against Liverpool on Tuesday, with no new injury complaints to report.

The Scout Says: Although Diame, at best, will only be afforded brief minutes in a potential return from injury against the Reds, his reinstatement would be good news for the Tigers’ chances of survival beyond this double Gameweek. The Senegalese midfielder’s eye for goal – as demonstrated by his four in five starts at the start of the season – would augment the assist potential of the likes of Ahmed Elmohamady and Dame N’Doye, who were both subject to investment spikes last week. Owners of the duo now watch on as they attempt to unlock a Liverpool back line that’s recorded clean sheets in four of their last six. On the flipside, the Merseysiders’ relative impotency at The Hawthorns offers hope for owners of Hull’s defenders that a shut-out is on the cards at the KC this evening.

Pearson may shuffle squad for Blues visit

Nigel Pearson hasn’t ruled out enacting a few changes to Leicester’s starting XI for their match-up against Chelsea. David Nugent and Jeffrey Schlupp are still touch-and-go for the Blues clash, while Jamie Vardy needed an injection in his foot before the Burnley fixture. With the Foxes facing Newcastle United in Saturday’s early kick off, Pearson is wary of further injuries given the quick turnaround of matches:

“My focus is Leicester City, we will always do what is best for us. If we need to freshen it up, we will. We’ve picked up some injuries in games. The likes of Nugent and Schlupp will have to be assessed to see whether they are going to be available for this one (Chelsea) or the weekend… Vardy had an injection in his foot just before the [Burnley] game. We will assess it. It’s not too bad getting players prepared for this game, but of course then it becomes the situation of we have a game played earlier on a Saturday having played on a Wednesday, but that’s how it is. Of course we have to keep an eye on [the Newcastle game]. It would be remiss of us not to do that because we work heavily in conjunction with the medical and sports science aspects of the Football Club. The considerations are about our players and the turnaround of games. I’m not too concerned about other people’s thoughts.”

The Scout Says: Pearson’s soundbites don’t dispel the notion that he could rest a selection of key players ahead of the more winnable Newcastle visit on Saturday. Although the Foxes will fancy their chances against any outfit at home in light of their ongoing four-match winning streak, owners of Wes Morgan, Robert Huth and Esteban Cambiasso will pray that the head coach doesn’t spring a surprise and make a raft of changes. The fitness of Schlupp and Nugent remains a concern looking beyond the double. Leicester close out the season with an agreeable run-in that includes three home clashes (NEW, SOU, QPR) and a trip to Sunderland – validating the tactic to heavily back Pearson’s side in the first place. The Magpies encounter is certainly one that Schlupp’s ownership would be loath to miss out on, given that the Tynesiders have notched a pitiful five goals in nine Gameweeks.

Advocaat considers omitting Johnson for Black Cats run-in

Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat is considering keeping Adam Johnson out of the matchday squad until the end of the season in response to his off-field issues, citing the winger’s current mental state as a primary concern.

The Scout Says: Save for the ongoing investigations surrounding Adam Johnson, the Black Cats winger would’ve been a prime candidate for their double Gameweek 37 (LEI, ars) had he played himself back into form with a run of starts. In his absence, Fantasy managers may well turn their attention towards Jack Rodwell (two goals in seven) and Sebastian Larsson (three goals, four assists this season) in their search for midfield differentials. Connor Wickham (two in two) reaffirmed his position as a strong selection with his goal against Stoke City on the weekend, while Jermain Defoe (three in nine) will be on a few radars across the next two rounds of fixtures.

I think Arsenal need a new manager. They're far from their ultimate goal of Champion's League.

It's like Liverpools "next year is our year".

You can't call it, but Liverpool + Arsenal enjoy not winning imo.

Yeah Liverpool have gone backwards a lot but they're making changes to try to get back. Arsenal have been too comfortable with 4th. I think City need a new manager too.

Arsenal aren't gonna finish fourth, and will probably win the FA cup again. Not backwards at all. Better than last season, which was better than the season before.

Sadly, it basically depends on how many injuries they get next season.

They could mount a "title challenge" as he says, but a fair bit of work and change is needed if they're to win it. They are turning into also rans a bit which is sad; it's very hard to compete with the financial muscle of City and Chelsea, but Arsenal can spend big sums. They are a bit of a parody of themselves now, wilfully refusing to address the areas that clearly need addressing.

Like the great center back they signed or brining Coquelin back who has been IMMENSE? Or dropping Sczez.. or Giroud completely upping his game? Which areas?

Coquelin is not enough, he gets injured (hardly unlikely with Arsenal's record) and they're stuck with a 60 year old Flamini as their only real holding midfielder. Same at centre back; even if Gabriel proves a great player, Mertesacker is getting on and there is not enough cover. Attacking midfield is sorted, but striker is the same story again. Giroud gets a knock, who's stepping in there? Finisher extraordinaire Danny Welbeck?

I know it's easier said than done, and great players aren't exactly growing on trees, but don't kid yourself that Arsenal have a complete squad. There's a reason they always have a bad spell in the season, they need cover in areas. Schneiderlin would be a good start.

And this isn't all about personnel. The Man City game was exactly what Arsenal should be doing in big games, but then they just revert to type in the Monaco first leg. I'm a Wenger fan, but he can be tactically naive for such an experienced manager.

I think Welbz needs to go, definitely. For the handful of great goals he's scored this season, he's missed so many more. Could have won the Chelsea game for us. Frustrating.

Coq isn't enough, I agree! We need another one, but Coq shouldn't be dropped by any means.

Chambers still has potential to be great CB backup. Not RB though, I don't trust him there. He was great at CB early in the season. I'm hoping Gabriel and Kos is the pairing next season. They could be so dominant!

All of that said, I actually think they've had a good season. They always have a spell where they're the best side in the country, they just need to sustain that for a whole season (much easier said than done).

Agree on all except CB. Gabriel looks like a great signing. Would love a solid LB that doesn't get injured all the time, and Scheid would be awesome. Think Coq should still get games though. Potentially play both in tough games, etc.

I think Arsenal can win the league with this team, if they can stay fit (Özil, Ramsey etc) and besides that, Wenger finally figured out who his best defensive players are with Coquelin, Ospina, Monreal and Bellerin making the backline much more stable, they're still the best team of 2015.

As a general rule, if you're concerned about whether someone's nailed on, then they aren't. I don't think Debuchy is even first choice, so very very far from nailed on.

First 4 or 5 episodes, admittedly not a lot. I think it's just a bit of a mental block with supernatural/fantasy things, I really don't like Lord of the Rings either.

Though Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favourite films, so who knows eh.

I wouldn't put GOT above any of those, but as a massive fan of all those shows, I do love GOT.

I think the books are more engrossing and rewarding though tbh.

The season has been so disappointing to me so far.. and I can't even vent to the people I know because they haven't read the books.. The character development bits are so.. clumsy. Not to mention slow. If you're going to do the back story and character development thing.. the audience shouldn't really be so aware that it is happening. And it shouldn't bore them! And some of the characters are just bewildering to me.. in ways they never were in the books.. I could go on but I won't.

I've read that something shocking happens next week, and I'm actually looking forward to it because the only bit that has really excited me is Tyrion talking back to the Guard outside the brothel.. That's been like.. the highlight of the season so far. 😯

Without spoiling anyone else let's just say the Sansa/ North plot is bewildering to me.

      2. Klopp's Kids
        • 10 Years

I agree 100% Tyrion getting caught was the most exciting thing to happen.
It was easy to see where Sansa was going and the character development didn't add anything to the characters but Jon Snow...but very minimally.

        1. ellelelle
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 1 month ago

Yeah the Jon snow was handled a bit better than the rest.. but I thought his election seemed almost.. anti climatic?

The Stannis aspect baffles me.. My impression of Stannis Baratheon was that he was kinda immovable when it came to codes and laws. Stubborn, obstinate.. kinda sickeningly so.. but that's what I always imagined. He enforced laws and the crueler the more strongly he seemed to feel about them. I can't get why he'd put pressure on someone else to break a code of honour. Especially someone in Jon's position. He's not just a steward! Like Stannis would go down in history for creating a Lord Deserter. But maybe it's a test. Maybe he will respect Jon more. Or he is just that desperate. Don't get it.

I can only hope the Bronn/Jamie partnership might get more interesting. I generally like when two characters are thrown together like Arya and the Hound were.. Varys and Tyrion was disappointing, except for Tyrion's disappearing and foul mouth to guard. Brienne and Pod is painful.. actually painful. And this sad face Cersei is just weird. The Cersei I thought I knew would be like.. gunning for blood by know. Walking around all meek and letting herself be humiliating by Margaery? Don't get it.

Yeah I don't remember Stannis asking Jon to do that in the book, did he? Very uncharacteristic of him.

They seem to change the characters personalities whenever they need to advance a plot on the show.

This is my problem with what is going on now.. it's rewriting so many of the characters we thought we knew and trying to pitch it as "character development" but i'm struggling to buy it. I'll reserve judgement til end of season. But the main reason I loved Game of Thrones was all the reckless, chaotic characters.. and the true neutrals, the schemers, the doggedly noble or the doggedly .. dastardly.. That is probably the cheesiest thing I ever wrote. Maybe I should sign up to write for season six...

I think the prophecy is why Cersei is down. She thinks she can't control things anymore.

I think Stannis is desperate because he wants a true northerner just like Bolton does.

It still baffles me how idiot Sansa is.

Overall there hasn't been much progression since the season finale from last season.

Everything they did with Sansa at the end of the season made me think she was about to have a renaissance.. I thought the frustrating naive bits were over and a new hardened, bitter and dangerous Sansa would emerge. I think my hopes for that are basically dashed now.. she just contents herself to be a pawn in Littlefingers game? When she knows that is what he is doing? Like that would ever end well :-/

I can't see how a prophecy would stop Cersei from desperately trying to maintain her grip on the kingdom.. I think they are showing her as too easily and too soon defeated .. and I can't imagine her showing weakness even if it did scare her.. especially not to Margaery. It's almost like they want us to pity her? I know she's supposed to be mourning her father and son, and Jamie too I suppose.. but I think she always felt kept down and ruled by Tywin and Jamie has become a different person.. I should imagine she'd be bitter and angry? She was the son Tywin wanted and yet he favoured the Jamie who would disregard everything Lannister and go seek validation elsewhere? Maybe she will get Casterley Rock but she won't want it now. And I guess Tommen is growing away from her and they've showed that. They are focusing a lot on her sadness but I can't stomach how pitiful she seems.. She still has time to fight! I don't want to feel sorry for her if something bad happens.. I'd rather she went out fighting? She played the game.. she wasn't just a victim up until now!

    Oh righty then gents:

    A - Monreal, Bolasie, Sanchez

    B - Kosh, Henderson, Ozil

    Thoughts appreciated

    Davis/Hamer
    Ivan, Skrtel, PVA, Dawson, Naughton
    Hazard, Sterling, Silva, Eriksen, Puncheon
    Remy, Kun, Kane

    A) Remy and Eriksen to Giroud and a sub-6.7m midfielder (-4) is one option although undecided on the midfielder (thoughts appreciated).

    B) Alternative is that I have exact cash for Remy and Puncheon to Giroud and King. This leaves me with a save next week and then enough cash for Eriksen and Silva to Ramsey and Cazorla for Arsenal's double. Would probably play King over Eriksen

Considering I don't see any of the sub-6.7m midfielders as worthwhile potentials, I'm thinking B. Does that sound like a good option?

    Schmeichel, Ospina
    Terry, Ivan, Skrtel, Schlupp, PVA
    Hazard, Coutinho, Sterling, Sanchez, Grealish
    Aguero, Vardy, Murray
    (3.7m in the bank)

So, should I use my FT this week?
Selling Murray and getting Giroud is the obvious move.
Or maybe I should get Benteke instead, and then get another Arsenal midfielder in for Coutinho/Sterling next week?

    a. Giroud in for Murray
    b. Benteke in for Murray
    c. Another transfer

Looking forward to remaining weeks, and think it is likely that many will be looking to use their FT for a one week punt in GW38. Who, at this stage, are the likely candidates for a punt?

Benteke against an already relegated Burnley?
Cambiasso in potentially his final game for Leicester against QPR?
Ayoze against a West Ham team who will already have their flip-flops on?
Or a left field pick, someone like a Chelsea player like Cuadrado getting a start and taking his opportunity?

    Rickie Lambert.

Criminal the way BR has treated him IMO

I realise he paid a lot for Mario and feels obliged to make it work but Lambert has scored goals at PL level and Pool needs goals, yet he's started about 4 games all season

    Poor form from BR IMO

I agree. He was brought in to do a 'job' were the quotes earlier in the season. Exactly wtf was his job if not to play games when Sturridge injured. Very poor from BR, although I'm one of his biggest fans.

meh, he's a competition winner at liverpool. wouldn't really call him a goalscorer at this level at all (at least not a good one) but he was pretty good at bringing other into play at southamtpon, at least if liverpool played him over balotelli it would be like having 10 or 11 men instead of 9

Upon closer inspection, Ozil seems to be a better option than Rambo. Plus I get the feeling that he's more nailed on, which is absolutely essential for the DGW. Any Arsenal fans care to weigh in?

Ozil is more nailed and imo will start both DGW matches. I think Ramsey is the better option if he plays central which is far from guaranteed.
