The ScoutCast – Episode 159 – Inactive

Only one FPL manager could withstand a 52-point hit and walk away with a smile on their face. In this week’s ScoutCast episode we tell the extraordinary tale of the FPL champion’s “inactive” Wildcard, whilst looking back on Granville’s own, rather more successful squad refresh.

We tackle all the usual regulars, as Jonty arrives armed with another array of quizzical requests from you, the community. We look forward to the Gameweek 37 double Gameweek, assess the role of end of season motivation and recall the moment that Jamie Vardy’s girlfriend turned our world upside down. No really.

This week’s episode was published live on Monday via Google Hangouts. You can view the full, uncut footage in the larger player below or via our YouTube channel.

If you prefer the slick, slimline audio edition, you’ll need this link or the first player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Bench 3 of the follow:

    Terry - Ivanovic - Schlupp - Clyne - Bellerin
    Ramsey - Hazard - Henderson - Sterling - Sigurdsson
    Murray - Aguero - Kane

I'm thinking Murray, Schlupp and Bellerin?

Captain thoughts this week, primarily split between Haz and Kun?

Anyone suggest any differential captain punts?

Funny thing, all the journalists in England sound scared and insecure when they're asking questons at press conferences, while the managers sound quite determined and even arrogant. I think the journalists kind of lack balls and authority in England.

I am not sure if everyone's or anyone's aware about Absinthe here.

This is what Triggerlips has on his blog.

Simon Humber, one of the original members of Transfer Hub passed away today. He had been suffering from ocular melanoma, which came as a great surprise to many, as he was always cheerful and never lost his great sense of humour. Taken far too soon, he leaves behind a young son.

Many of us on Transfer hub will remember him for his rotation spreadsheet which he was keen to pass on to the group. He was also a regular poster on Fantasy football scout, where he posted under the name Absinthe.

Around a month ago he posted in the Transfer Hub group , asking which players would be good to buy until the end of the season. Many didn’t realise the significance, but he knew he wouldn’t be around to manage his team, but still wanted a good finish. Dedicated until the end. Next season our league will be named the Simon Humber cup , there will also be a trophy in his honour.

    RIP Simon

If this is true, we've lost a gem.

first and foremost it's incredibly sad. too young too soon. thoughts are with his family. that post a couple of weeks ago was very moving, puts things in perspective.

i note on his team page he played 4 transfers last week. it's oddly comforting to think one might still be thinking of football / fantasy football while staring death in the face.

Just seen this......how sad. I had a very similar experience last season when the founder of our work mini-league tragically passed away with half dozen gw of the season to go. My reaction was to form 'The John Dunn F.P.L. Cup' which were all playing for this season. He too left a child behind and our lives will never be the same.
Fantasy Footy is clearly nothing compared to real life trauma but i can only applaude Triggerlips for his gesture with the renaming. All we can do is honour their life, their passions and our friendships with them in the best way we can come up with.

RIP, quite inspirational that he continued posting until the end. Many do not stay that active as the illness progresses. Perhaps this may sound crass and I do not intend it to, rather its how I have dealt with the loss of others but in a cruel world where many die young, to reach middle age and beyond should be celebrated, as that is more than millions have been able to.

This is tragic news. We were preparing our own post for the morning but I'll say here that all at FFS are deeply saddened by Simon's death.

He was someone I met in person in a previous job, years before FFS and we became friends on Facebook immediately he turned up on our pages. I was very proud to have him contribute to the community.

In my limited time meeting Simon and from his posts on our site, he was clearly a very smart and funny guy and we're all going to miss him in our little part of the world.

That, of course, is nothing compared to the tragic loss this is to his son and other family - our thoughts are all with them.

We're going to think on a way to honour Simon, in memory of his contributions here on FFS.

      Words fail me...
Almost two years ago, reading through pre-season transfer talk, I was shocked by a message from him announcing that he'd just lost one eye due to cancer. But he mentioned that his second eye was not in danger and has always been making an impression of a positive person since then, so I thought that that was it. And now it turns out that there was way more behind that... that's a tragedy... rest in peace, Absinthe...

In remember him asking for transfer suggestions a couple of weeks back, in fact the very day he made the post about his illness.

I alongside others such as Ryan, Innsie gave our own piece of advices to him on that as he wanted to take in a GK. I also wished him all the best, saying that his health will improve just like Doos' had in that thread. That was our first ever interaction and sadly we can have no more.

Cannot even fathom how brave one has to be to still be cheerful while staring at the face of death. Thinking about football and even playing the fantasy game. I see he made 4 transfers last week as well, incredible, words fail me to be honest!

Deeply saddened by the loss of such a great guy.

      Rest in Peace Simon.

Absinthe was a great contributor to this site. His pre-season articles were excellent and he was always keen to open up a discussion and explore different aspects of FPL. He was a real pleasure to have around in the dead zone and I thoroughly enjoyed his insight. Such a shame that a young lively man such as he has been taken so early. My heart goes out to his family and his young son, I hope his boy can get to know him somehow in his own way as he grows up. Absinthe was an inspiration to us all with his positive outlook while staring into the face of adversity. The fat lady has sung, the bitch has taken him.

      Rest in peace Simon

Please forgive me in advance for this long post.

Like many others here, I didn't know Simon beyond the exchange of a couple of posts. But I saw his post a couple of weeks ago regarding his prognosis and found it very touching. It revealed the kind of man I wish I had gotten to know. May he rest in peace.

Reading all the preceding comments led me to this thought: Is there some way for this community to let his son know (through his wife, of course) how much his father was appreciated and respected here, how much he contributed and how much he'll missed? If so, my sense is it will be a very meaningful gesture to him - perhaps not immediately, but definitely at some point down the road.

I say that from experience, having been 11 years old and an only child when my father died. Years later, and having forgotten or not known many small facets about who he was in the world, I found a box filled with condolences, papers and other seemingly insignificant stuff containing information related to him that I either hadn't known or had completely forgotten about him. The memory of the time spent going through those items is wonderful and bittersweet, and I still have many of those items.

If my dad had been a member of a club in which his "handle" was Absinthe, I'd have loved to know that, and to know about how he participated in it. Maybe not when I was 11, but certainly when I was 21 or 41 or 59, which is my age. And I'll bet Simon would be happy if his son knew it.

So what's my proposal? I don't know, but my hope is that Simon's son and wife are made aware that he touched us and mattered to us, which he obviously did.

I'm not sure why AK's post hit me so hard. Then again maybe I do.

Agree and understand your sentiment. I'm the only child of parents that died simultaneously in an accident when I was 27. Going through their things and speaking with their friends after they passed, I came to know them differently and better.there is a time when it is nice, comforting and enriching to come to know your parents as complex interesting humans and not simply as your beloved parents.

I am sure a print out of our community's thoughts for Simon in a nice box would hold something for his son later well.

All the best to all who Simon cared about for the coming days and years.

Here is a copy of a message i recieved from one of Simons Occular Melanoma group

I only knew Simon through our Ocular Melanoma community. I would ask each of you, whether you have eye symptoms or not, whether you wear glasses or not, to get a DILATED eye exam soon if you have not had one in a year. Risk factors are fair skin, blue or green eyes, blonde or red hair but anyone can get ocular melanoma. It cannot be detected without a dilated eye exam. 50% of us with it die. Yes, it is rare, 5 or 6 cases per 1 million people but Simon would want you diagnosed early so you could possibly have a better chance

    Chelsea scored 3 goals yesterday...

Hazard had 0 shots on target,
    And 0 off target,
He created 2 chances, and one appears to be a 50 yard shot from someone so hardly a real chance,
He had 4 touches in the box...

This does not seem like a runaway captaincy performance?

P.S I do think Hazard is class etc, just want to give this one some proper thought!

Chelsea at home for the game that could win them the prem, just seems to hard to pass! They could easily make showcase a lot of goals, as we saw against leicester they can turn it on when they want, then again they could play defensive but against palace I see a high scoring (imo)

I honestly can't see how Aguero is not the captain favourite, City (and especially Kun) have put so many goals past Spurs recently. And Kun looks back in some kind of form. And Spurs look pants defensively. And City need to win. And yeah those Haz stats...

This is true. But they've played 1 up front a few times recently, and even with Bony fit you'd think (hope) he'd played a system/side that has proved so immensely successful against Spurs... And if not, I still fancy the psychology of the reverse fixture this season to come into play!

It's too much of a gamble with keepers, I wouldn't overthink that one. If it was me I would go Myhill as Leisecter have more to fight for really

Very true. I used the form guide to decide and then West Brom pissed all over it! I don't see either of them keeping a clean sheet to be fair.

Whats a safe ML lead now? 100 points? 150? I'm 110 clear with 5/6 same players as rival. Still catchable ?

Don't say that - reaching the last 8 of the Members Cup has been the highlight of my season so far.

Luck plays a part, of course, but there must be an element of skill too (unlike the lottery, which is pure luck).

And there are probably quite a few decent players who aren't in the FFS Leagues - some might even be lurkers who use our site or other ones but haven't bothered to join our Leagues - I would be surprised if there are many dead teams still in the FPL Cup.

In my mini league head to head, I can only lose the league if I lose all my last 4 games and my rival wins all his 4 games.

Any tips on how to 'ride it out' in a mini league?

If you know you are very likely to lose one week then take a hit or two so you are very likely to win the following week. You may as well lose by a lot than a little in a H2H....it's still just 3pts.

What do people think will happen to Chelsea's potential rotation if they win the league on Sunday?

I was thinking taking Terry out my team and potentially Hazard?

Is this too much of a risk, I reckon Haz won't get full games after winning the league

Right, when are we gonna call time on the old video versions of these scoutcasts?

No offence to those involved but the quality of the casts decreases dramatically when more people are introduced, and that includes the audio version as well.

I for one find the Mark/Granville dynamic awesome when it's just the pair of them discussing the previous gameweek and the usual topics.

With Jonty (and others) added, there is constant talking over one another and the whole thing looks/sounds really unprofessional.

I think that if you're going to continue doing this during the second half of each season then maybe you need to upgrade equipment so everything sounds and looks better.

I know what you mean, but I think Mark is very good on it and holds the structure well. Obviously it could be improved though -they prob just need more practice at this format, bear in mind that you comparing it to mark and granville at the end of a long run of just the two of them doing audio.

I have decided I want Tekkers over Kane after this GW and will go -4 in GW36 which option looks better for GW36 and going into GW37

A Vardy Kane Sterling >> Tekkers Wickham Ozil/Ramsey

    Or

B Vardy Kane Sterling >> Tekkers Larsson Giroud

    Current team

    Pants
    Ivan Terry Skrtel
    Hazard Sanchez Coutinho STERLING
    Aguero KANE VARDY

    Myhill Bolasie Bellerin PVA

I still have Coutinho and Sterling and I'm keeping both this week. But are there even any (better) alternatives atm? Already have Hazard and Sanchez and I'm going with Giroud and Koscielny on the dgw so 2 spots left but no potential replacements it seems...?
