Team of the Season – John Terry

Having been written off by fans and pundits alike before Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge, John Terry has silenced many a detractor in the last two seasons. Since the “Special One” made his way back to Chelsea, Terry has been named in our Team of the Season in consecutive years and been honoured in the PFA Team of the Year for his exploits this campaign. Although a line has been drawn under Terry’s England career, the Blues stalwart is exhibiting few signs of dotage on the domestic stage.

The Statistics

Despite going undefeated in their first 11 matches, Chelsea recorded just three cleans sheets over that period. With nothing in the way of attacking returns to bolster Terry’s output, though, his value depreciated from 6.5 to 6.3. The Blues’ subsequent seven matches restored our faith in his big hitting-potential, in light of the London club’s six clean sheets and Terry’s back-to-back goals in Gameweeks 17 and 18 that delivered successive 15-point hauls. A further eight shut-outs in 20 starts ensured that Terry remained at the forefront of the defender discussions in the second half of the season.

While Branislav Ivanovic’s spate of attacking returns (two goals and four assists in nine starts) upon the turn of the year rendered him the premier Chelsea defender for much of the campaign, two goals and three bonus points in his final five fixtures meant that the Blues captain finished just two points shy (177 points) of Ivanovic’s total score (179 points), while stretching his lead over third-placed pair Nathaniel Clyne and Phil Jagielka to 35 points.

In fact, Terry – who spearheads the defender scoring leaderboard with five goals – ranks seventh in the full Fantasy Premier League (FPL) roster, after surpassing his 2013/14 tally (172) with two fixtures to spare.

Although Terry picked up more bonus points (14) than Ivanovic (13), both defenders surprisingly fall short of Cesar Azpilicueta’s tally (19). Terry’s initial price tag (6.5) was pitched a tier below the marauding Ivanovic (7.0), yet the pair are more or less identical for points per game, with 4.7 and 4.8 ppg respectively. On a lesser note, Terry chalked up eight fewer yellow cards (two) than Ivanovic (ten) this term, keeping the negative points to a minimum.

The Prospects

One of only four outfield players (along with Ivanovic) to play every minute of the 2014/15 campaign, Terry’s guaranteed pitch time could well earn him a price hike to 7.0 next time around, putting him on a par with the Serbian.

Mourinho clearly has no concerns over Terry’s fitness right now and it was perhaps telling that, when Kurt Zouma was occasionally handed minutes in the heart of defence, it was Gary Cahill who dropped out to accommodate the youngster. With Cesar Azpilicueta and Filipe Luis still battling it out for the left-back berth, Terry’s security of starts offers a solid route into the Chelsea defence.

The Blues’ resilience under Mourinho saw them produce more clean sheets (17) than any other side and also saw them concede fewer goals (32) – a pattern that looks likely to continue for the following campaign due to Jose’s pragmatic approach.

Terry’s consistency of attacking returns also serves to strengthen his case for investment. The Premier League’s all-time top-scoring defender has netted at least three goals in the past five campaigns and scored more times (five) than any other defender this term.

For those Fantasy managers prepared to shop in the premium bracket next time out, it’s difficult to look beyond the Chelsea defence as a reliable source of returns. Providing he can steer clear of injury, Terry looks likely to push Ivanovic all the way for our attentions as Mourinho keeps faith in his skipper to lead the London outfit to a successful title defence.

If only Remy had more gametime- when on the pitch he scored or assisted 53.8% of Chelsea's goals - compares with 45.1% for Costa and 32.4% for Hazard

Fair point. I wonder how the season would have turned out if Liverpool had gone through with signing him for £8m instead of wasting twice that on Balotelli.

You could argue that, position by position, Arsenal don't NEED anyone. They don't have any bad players, but there's a reason they aren't in the top 2, and it's often because Wenger sees one decent player in a position as enough. As with Fabregas, if a player as good as Vidal is available, you go and get them. He is better than anyone in Arsenal's squad as a central midfielder, and if Arsenal don't buy world class players, they won't get close to winning the league.

That is, of course, presuming it doesn't prevent them strengthening elsewhere. For instance, Fabregas would have been a fantastic signing for Arsenal, but if it had to be Fabregas OR Sanchez then they made the right call.

That is ine position arsenal do have more than enough players though. Cazorla ramsey wilshere arteta. Vidal sure is better but would certainly limit potential signings elsewhere

where would they be better investing though?

the only weak position they have is goalkeeper. Ospina looks good but not for a title challenging team

Arteta is past it (and was never really up to it as a central midfielder at that level, he was better in an advanced playmaking role at Everton), Wilshere is permanently crocked and has stalled massively, Ramsey is also very injury prone, and Cazorla, like Arteta, isn't really at his best in central midfield. It's fine against weaker teams, but in Europe they'll get found out again.

Not directly at you Doolittle just adding to thread, personally I think they need a GK, CB, Striker and possibly another defensive mid, though a CM mid to pivot there could do well. Mind, I'd only fill these personally if top quality was guaranteed.

Yep, it's cliched but they basically need a spine to the team. Don't get me wrong, they have a very good top 4 squad, but they are never going to trouble Chelsea, let alone Europe, with that side.

Most importantly, they need a mentality shift and the ability to adapt to different situations. There were signs of it this season, particularly with the City game, but matches like Monaco and Anderlecht need to be eradicated. It's matchplay awareness, and for someone with such experience, Wenger lacks it.

Indeed, still a slight worry he's too arrogant in terms of confidence of what he thinks his teams can do to others, but really a few quality additions, and probably some outs, and they'd be contenders on all fronts.

Aston Villa target Massimo Luongo could join a Premier League side before the end of the week, according to Swindon chairman Lee Power.

"Something could happen this week," Power said. "We have three substantial offers in from Premier League clubs and we need to sit down with Massimo and his advisors and decide what to do.

"The numbers being mentioned are around £3 million, which is good money for us and we'll be pleased with that.

"Mass has come from nowhere to become one of the key men in the Australian team and he will be a fantastic asset for someone.

"One day he will play in the Premier League – and it might be as early as next week. We are not going to stand in the boy's way."

      Yaya Toure to Inter Milan

Inter Milan honorary president Massimo Moratti has revealed he is confident Manchester City star Yaya Toure will join the San Siro side this summer.

"It could move forward well," Moratti, who was the club's president for 18 years, told reporters.

"I feel pretty confident in the Inter board. [Coach Roberto] Mancini likes him very much, I would guess that he'll arrive."

Sources in Milan claim Inter will submit a new bid to land the 32-year-old after he returns from City's post-season trip to North America.

      Morning all

Just a quick thank you to all of you who have offered an opinion and advice regarding transfers, team selection etc. this season.

It's a really friendly atmosphere in this place and your help was the difference in helping me win my ML and gain my highest ever finish - a modest 67k, but a real improvement for me.

I wish you all a happy summer and look forward to a full season with you all next year.

Esteban Cambiasso: Leicester boss will give midfielder time

Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson would "love" Esteban Cambiasso to sign a new contract but says they will not rush the midfielder into making a decision.

Pearson said: "Everybody here would love him to stay. He has been a really positive figure on and off the field.

"But we give him time and that is the respect he is due."

Far from it, the Pozzos are the best in the business. Jokanovic was only ever on a one year contract, and he wouldn't budge with his wage demands, so the owners were left with no choice. As a Watford fan it's sad to see him go, but this is his own fault.

06/07 I do not remember my OR
      13/14 302K
      14/15 35K

This season last 16 GW was good run for me. 14 green arrows and only 2 red. After GW22 my OR was 226K.

Next season my target is inside 10K. I think it's possible and realistic target.

      -less hits next season

Are hits worth it? I took 15 hits this season(my first)
I took a hit in the last week, Hazard->Yaya, since Hazard yellow(50%- Dental problems) and likely he would be rested. Yaya got 3 point and Hazard played and got 7 points. So my loss was 8 points. Was it a mistake since I didnt investigate enough about Hazard?
I only had Bertrand coming from bench so that was my other mistake (or unluck) that I had 2 nonplayers, Bruce and Gomez red). I was worried more players rested(like Koscielny)
I think I have gained some other times, like getting DGW-players. What is your strategy?

      A) Dont take hits, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, not worth the effort
      B) Only if major problems in team, injuries or suspensions (red players)
      C) I like it even though I sometimes lose on them

      1. Licky
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 24 days ago

Somewhere inbetween B) and C) for me, when done temperately and at the right times/or out of necessity can really give you a boost. Though I'm sure some would say prior foresight would negate them altogether.

hits are good for long term moves too. that;s why a hit on the lat day made no sense to me as it was a one match punt. if you take a hit it can often pay off over a few fixtures not just one.

benitez to madrid...sure why not, hes been a resounding success at Napoli! scraping into the CL in as piss poor an Italian serie a your ever likely to see.

they need someone who is more of a 'control freak' like Rafa. It's a big opportunity for him and be interesting to see how he does.

if he doesn't win the league or CL he will prob be fired next year.

I think the the only reason they kept Carlo last year was due to the significance of the Decima, Im not sure he would have been kept on had it been their 8 or 9th. I think they are an absolute shambles of a club and always will be with the control afforded to the President.
