Team of the Season – John Terry

Having been written off by fans and pundits alike before Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge, John Terry has silenced many a detractor in the last two seasons. Since the “Special One” made his way back to Chelsea, Terry has been named in our Team of the Season in consecutive years and been honoured in the PFA Team of the Year for his exploits this campaign. Although a line has been drawn under Terry’s England career, the Blues stalwart is exhibiting few signs of dotage on the domestic stage.

The Statistics

Despite going undefeated in their first 11 matches, Chelsea recorded just three cleans sheets over that period. With nothing in the way of attacking returns to bolster Terry’s output, though, his value depreciated from 6.5 to 6.3. The Blues’ subsequent seven matches restored our faith in his big hitting-potential, in light of the London club’s six clean sheets and Terry’s back-to-back goals in Gameweeks 17 and 18 that delivered successive 15-point hauls. A further eight shut-outs in 20 starts ensured that Terry remained at the forefront of the defender discussions in the second half of the season.

While Branislav Ivanovic’s spate of attacking returns (two goals and four assists in nine starts) upon the turn of the year rendered him the premier Chelsea defender for much of the campaign, two goals and three bonus points in his final five fixtures meant that the Blues captain finished just two points shy (177 points) of Ivanovic’s total score (179 points), while stretching his lead over third-placed pair Nathaniel Clyne and Phil Jagielka to 35 points.

In fact, Terry – who spearheads the defender scoring leaderboard with five goals – ranks seventh in the full Fantasy Premier League (FPL) roster, after surpassing his 2013/14 tally (172) with two fixtures to spare.

Although Terry picked up more bonus points (14) than Ivanovic (13), both defenders surprisingly fall short of Cesar Azpilicueta’s tally (19). Terry’s initial price tag (6.5) was pitched a tier below the marauding Ivanovic (7.0), yet the pair are more or less identical for points per game, with 4.7 and 4.8 ppg respectively. On a lesser note, Terry chalked up eight fewer yellow cards (two) than Ivanovic (ten) this term, keeping the negative points to a minimum.

The Prospects

One of only four outfield players (along with Ivanovic) to play every minute of the 2014/15 campaign, Terry’s guaranteed pitch time could well earn him a price hike to 7.0 next time around, putting him on a par with the Serbian.

Mourinho clearly has no concerns over Terry’s fitness right now and it was perhaps telling that, when Kurt Zouma was occasionally handed minutes in the heart of defence, it was Gary Cahill who dropped out to accommodate the youngster. With Cesar Azpilicueta and Filipe Luis still battling it out for the left-back berth, Terry’s security of starts offers a solid route into the Chelsea defence.

The Blues’ resilience under Mourinho saw them produce more clean sheets (17) than any other side and also saw them concede fewer goals (32) – a pattern that looks likely to continue for the following campaign due to Jose’s pragmatic approach.

Terry’s consistency of attacking returns also serves to strengthen his case for investment. The Premier League’s all-time top-scoring defender has netted at least three goals in the past five campaigns and scored more times (five) than any other defender this term.

For those Fantasy managers prepared to shop in the premium bracket next time out, it’s difficult to look beyond the Chelsea defence as a reliable source of returns. Providing he can steer clear of injury, Terry looks likely to push Ivanovic all the way for our attentions as Mourinho keeps faith in his skipper to lead the London outfit to a successful title defence.

Top posts get substantially more views than bottom posts. In reality all posts are equal, but sometimes an innocuous comment such as this one is top post. Admittedly far more football discussion has resulted from it than OCProdigy probably expected.

Norwich got 10 cleansheets last time out which is on par with Burnley this season.

Burnley were good value though as even when they conceded apart from WBA away where they tried a new formation they never got properly dicked.

    Who is Happy?

Just looked at my team and saw that I have got a second consecutive red arrow, following my incredibly poor decision to remove Mane on the penultimate week of the season for a hit. But I am still very happy. I ended up with my highest ever ranking, in the top 10k (my target, this year) and won a few hundred quid in mini league.

Looking back on your season, and what you aimed to achieve at different points of the season (we all set out to win it at the start, didn't we?) are you happy now?

My aim was to win it, my more optimistic aim was top 500/1k, and my realistic aim was top 5k. Managed to just sneak into the top 5k, so pretty happy with that. There's definitely a sense that I could have done better after a lot of 50/50 decisions that I got wrong, but after being 15k GW29 I have to be pleased.

It feels like you'd have to get every 50/50 decision right to win this thing, doesn't it?

Yeah I think to win it everything needs to go right and then some. Even if I'd got every decision I made right, I wouldn't have won it; there will have moves Simon March made that I wasn't even considering.

It's an easy game to play, but nigh on impossible to win.

The thing with FPL is that everything looks obvious/silly in hindsight and along with good judgement, you need a lot of luck! You were just unlucky with Mane, nobody saw a hat trick coming. Still a great rank and something to build on next season.

I had a fair few bad calls/bad luck over the final month or two, but thankfully everything came together in the last GW with Walcott (c).

Yeah I felt whilst it was high risk, it could give big rewards and something was urging me to go for it. I've had lows on the final GW in previous seasons, like dropping out of top 1k after being there most of season, so it was nice to be on the other side of the coin this time 🙂

Not me. I had a very similar season to last year. Started badly, took a few weeks to swing it around, then slowly been getting back up the ranks. Ended on 23k. Last week was highest rank of season 22k.

Been a slog, and a fairly enjoyable one as was chasing the whole time on mini leagues. Played the consistency catch up game which is dull!

Had someone told me my end of season rank at the beginning of the season, I'd have been overjoyed. However, since I had adjusted my targets, I am now disappointed because I failed 2 of my 3 targets (namely, failing to reach top 1k overall, failing to win my country league, but still winning my mini league by nearly 100 points)

You need to rest up and enjoy the break now.

Then in early july pre season starts and you need to start practicing complex future forecasting exercises to get your mind in good fitness for the season.

Then when the game opens its all out about testing out your squad, making plenty of changes and running spreadsheets of how they perform in practice games to build match sharpness.

Then in the last 10 days of pre season you need to start to settle down your first team squad.

Then and only then are you ready to start a new season

I've got to say, after playing fantasy football for 8 years, finding this site and using it regularly has been a revelation. Finished in the top 4k on FPL, top 600 on the Daily Mirror game, and top 2500 on both the Daily Mail and Telegraph games.

Top work to all those that contribute to these articles!

While I - and, no doubt, many others - really appreciate the articles detailing player and team stats, punts, captaincy options, post-game number breakdowns, and player reports, I think there's an glaring omission in the content FFS provides.

I, for one, would like a comprehensive breakdown of all the in-jokes, banned posters, profile name changes, mini leagues, and backstories that proliferate on here.

It can be v difficult/tedious to follow at times 😉

(also, a guide to smiley - or otherwise - faces would be great, too)

The less said about these horrible new emoticons the better 🙁

I'm not sure any articles, FAQs etc will ever be able to provide the underlying narrative of the site. I think it requires time on the site. The mini leagues (LAWR, FFS UEFA etc) could be elaborated on I suppose.

Yeah, the FFS UEFA comps usually start during international breaks to ease the monotony and create something to post about (and occasionally stir up a storm lol).

Although not sure how many, if any, FFS UEFA tourneys there will be next season as with ENR packing it in it's only myself left. And I can't do everything on my own 🙁

How is this fair play thing even judged? Least cards or fouls or something? Bit ridiculous that clubs get to participate in Europe based on that. In Holland a team that got relegated got it..

    1. goriuanx
      • 13 Years
      9 years, 29 days ago

The requirements need adjusting I think. For a team to get relegated but qualify for Europe is very questionable.

      1. Wouter
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 29 days ago

Agreed. A team like Wigan two seasons ago is understandable as they showed the quality to go on a cup run, but here in Holland a team called Go Ahead Eagles (yes, that is their actual name) won it and are qualifying for Europe, whilst losing to a second division side last week in a promotion/relegation play-off game.

    2. The Light Knight
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 29 days ago

Least cards (reds are worth 2 or 3 I think)

Sounds a good idea in theory, just not sure anyone really wants to be in the Europa anyway

      1. Give The Todd Some Love
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 29 days ago

        No English clubs anyway.

I think that's ridiculous though. As a fan, surely the one thing you hope for is a European away day? If you support a club outside the top 5 or 6, then the Europa league is brilliant. Even from the club's perspective I don't understand it. Go on a European adventure for a season, and potentially have a worse season in the league - so what? It's not like you're going to get relegated, your midtable position will just be lowered a bit.

        1. The Light Knight
          • 12 Years

For fans sure but managers are hired by owners to do well in PL which is worth far more money than the Europa

            • 12 Years
            9 years, 29 days ago

I just don't think that's true, the difference between finishing 7th and 14th is a few million here and there, nothing compared to the TV money earnt by staying in the division.

            1. The Light Knight
              • 12 Years
              9 years, 29 days ago

Still more than you get for progressing through Europa rounds.

And if you finish 7th, you get more prize money plus you pocket some appearance Europa money next season too before focusing on the league again 😉

                • 12 Years
                9 years, 29 days ago

That's the thing though, what is actually the point of the league if you're not in the top 6? Cups and trophies are criminally undervalued by most PL clubs, who chose to settle for the satefy of mediocrity year after year.

Exactly! A European trophy much more important than finishing 6th instead of 12th imo.

Also added bonus now of the winners auto-qualification to the CL. English media playing down the tourney is mad imo

Guess it depends on the league. I support a Dutch team (Feyenoord) and the highlight of the season has been our European games. I think the Europa League is mainly disliked by the English clubs tbh.

Nice to hear. 🙂 Was definitely great to be able to play against teams like Sevilla and Roma and even beating Sevilla once. Sadly we won't be in it next season after completely bottling it this season, getting 2 points from our last 5 games and dropping to 4th as a result..

Yeah it's a shame about the Europa play off. Do you think any of your players could become big names? Obviously Clasie is awesome, but I've always liked the look of Manu and Kongolo as well.

Yes, I did mean it from more of a PL viewpoint.
Tbh, I think they shouldn't give the fair play positions to leagues with 4 CL spots and 3 Europa already

We dream of getting a high FPL ID (or low, depending on your point of view).

        aguero 12.5
        hazard 11
        costa 11.5
        2x keepers 9.0
        2x 4.0 defenders, 1 x 4.5 , 2 combined 11.5
        1 fwrd @ 6.0
        1 mid x 4.5
leaves 21.5 for 3 other mids which could be 3 x 6.5-7.5 range or one higher and one there and one less
