Moving Target

Moving Target – Micah Richards

Following the expiry of his contract with Manchester City, Micah Richards signed a four-deal with Aston Villa on a free transfer last week. The right-back sought the promise of first-team football, having recorded just ten appearances on loan at Fiorentina last term.

The History

The Birmingham-born Richards trained at Oldham Athletic’s youth academy for one year before making the switch to Manchester City at 14 years of age. After spending four years in their youth system, Richards earned his first senior appearance for the Sky Blues in 2005, replacing Danny Mills in a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. He went on to make a further 15 appearances in all competitions that campaign, netting his first goal in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Richards established himself as a regular starter over the next couple of seasons, tallying 63 appearances and one goal in all competitions. His cachet rose as a result of his commanding performances at right-back, earning him consecutive nominations for the PFA Young Player of the Year award in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 campaigns.

Richards’ best season in the top flight arrived when City sealed the Premier League crown in 2012; the robust full-back was nominated for the Manchester outfit’s Player of the Year award and notched more assists (five) than any other defender in the league. From the 2012/13 season, however, Argentine international Pablo Zabaleta became the first-choice right-back at the club, demoting Richards to bench duties.

Having chalked up just nine league outings in the previous two terms, Richards joined Fiorentina on a season-long loan deal in September 2014, ending his City career with nine goals and 14 assists across 246 appearances. Unfortunately, the manager at that time, Vincenzo Montella, elected to employ three centre-backs in a 3-5-2 formation that season, limiting Richards to just ten Serie A outings.

Off the back of three appearances for the England U21s, Richards became the youngest defender (18 years, four months and 22 days) to start a match for the senior squad when he played in a friendly against Holland in November 2006. He went on to record 11 caps during Steve McClaren’s brief tenure as the Three Lions boss, before falling out of favour when Fabio Capello was at the helm. To date, Richards has registered one goal and two assists in 13 appearances for England.

The Prospects

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Villa head coach Tim Sherwood cited Richards’ adaptability as a key factor in his acquisition:

“He is a player who can play in a number of positions. He can play right-back, centre-half and also in a three man defence so his versatility is another real positive. When I spoke with Micah it was clear how determined he is to get his career back on track and I’ve every confidence he will recapture the form and quality he displayed before he moved over to Italy. He had a lot of choices but I’m delighted he chose Aston Villa.”

In his last full season as starter, Richards notched one goal and six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions. Considering that he’s still only 26, there’s every chance that Richards could rediscover the form that had him earmarked as one of England’s top defensive prospects.

From a Fantasy perspective, Richards could well present an enticing route into Villa’s rearguard should he rediscover his best form under Sherwood. For all their failings last season, the West Midlands club still managed a reasonable ten clean sheets, so there’s scope to invest in a low-priced Villa defender when the fixtures are favourable.

In spite of the fact that Villa have two right-backs on their roster (Alan Hutton and Matthew Lowton), Sherwood preferred to deploy winger Leandro Bacuna in that role during the final stretch of last season. Although the Netherlands U21 international served as a potent attacking outlet – notching five assists in ten starts – his relative lack of positional training often left spaces for opposing offenses to exploit.

Certainly, Sherwood’s tactics afford his full-backs plenty of leeway in terms of attacking and given that Bacuna admitted last month that right-back wasn’t his “top position”, Richards’ rampaging runs down the flank could quickly become a feature of Villa’s play. Alternatively, he offers an option in the heart of the backline, though it’s fair to say that there are no shortage of centre-halves for Sherwood to choose from, with Ron Vlaar looking nailed-on, providing he remains injury-free.

Having conceded the third most number of goals last season (57), it’s likely that Villa’s defensive starters are likely to remain around the 4.5 mark. If Richards is placed in the same bracket and plays a prominent role in pre-season, Fantasy managers might be tempted to snap him up early, with the opening schedule smiling relatively kindly on Sherwood’s side. Aside from a home tie against Manchester United in Gameweek 2, the Villains boast a strong opening six fixtures (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) that could allow them to hit the ground running in their first full season under the former Tottenham manager.

This is what happens when you keep the asking price that high!

Sky sources understand that Aston Villa have received no offers for striker Christian Benteke.

Villa are still hoping that the Belgian international, who still has two years left on his current deal, will sign a new contract with the club.

Isn't this what they want to happen? I'm sure Villa will lower the asking price if he still hasn't signed this time next season

        exactly

why have Liverpool set Sterling's asking price at £50m

They don't want to sell and don't think anyone will pay that much, but if someone is mad enough

        *coughs* *City* *coughs*

        then they will sell

Good news, Jonty. If Rafa can get his weight down (unlikely) then you'll be a dead ringer - then simply wander in to the Bernabeu on matchdays and they'll let you in for free.

      a) oo expensive a keeper rotation
      b) WBA can keep a CS v anyone rotating them could be a risk
      c) Sunderland defenders could be 5.0 which isn't ideal in a rotation
      d) would like a 3rd team (though Bournemouth could be cheap enough)

I still think it's the best way, Panti will be top scoring keeper IMO and he's too damn upredictable to rotate

The issue with him is Don Vito likely to be 4.5

Sunderland are preparing a bid to tempt Stewart Downing away from West Ham, reports the London Evening Standard.

The 30-year-old started his career in the North east at Middlesbrough, and Sunderland believe they can lure him back.

Sky sources understand the Hammers have bid £14million for Marseille midfielder Dimitri Payet, which could pave Downing's way to leave the club.

Swansea and Stoke were top 10 last season so will both likely be very expensive (relative to the bottom half of the table teams).

It could work for a rotation of attacking players though if there are any reasonably priced.

Cech is a fantastic signing for Arsenal

a top keeper is worth at least 9-12 points a season and Arsenal haven't had a top keeper since Lehmann. United would have been nowhere near top 4 last season without DDG

Makes Arsenal defence (namely Kos) a much more interesting prospect for me next season

I see. But I don't think it is a case of him not being good enough for Arsenal, it is just the fact that they now have stumbled across a truly top keeper in Cech.

I think Ospina absolutely could do well for us and he is a lot cheaper then Lloris so would give room to sign a youngster like Leno.
Cillisen would also be great imo

"I’ve every confidence he will recapture the form and quality he displayed before he moved over to Italy. "

Sherwood really has got no clue. I would have thought that he wanted Richards for the form he displayed _at_ Fiorentina, and not for the "form" he displayed for several years before it on City's bench.

Read the rest of the article, he was twice nominated for young player of the year and in 2012 was nominated for city's player of the year after they won the league and he had more assists than any other defender in the league.

Form in Italy is worse than useless as a guide to how a player will do in a top league.

      1. Camp No No
        • 10 Years

2012 is not quite the form "he displayed before he moved over to Italy", it's the form he displayed before he moved over to bench at City.

He also played EL successfully with Fiorentina, and last time I checked Italian clubs did better than English ones in Europe anyway. PL is way overrated.

Italian teams did better in EL this season but Serie A is clearly a sub standard league now at a not much higher level than the French league.

As for PL being overrated? It is hard to know, the league is so even and physically demanding with such rewards for doing well in it that the English teams generally don't take the European competition (outwith the CL) that seriously.

Another point is that Financial fair play really disproportionately hit the PL compared to the Italian league. All the top EPL clubs had to cut their wage bills rapidly leading to a lot of experienced squad players leaving and younger players on lower wage contracts coming in. I think it is showing signs of evening out now but it has taken a good five years to get to this point and I think it will be another two or three before you see an EPL team in the CL final again.

          1. Camp No No
            • 10 Years
            9 years, 2 days ago

No, those are really bad excuses. I've shown it many times that PL is not more even than most of the other big leagues Rather the opposite: the difference between the top and the bottom is wider than in Germany, Italy and France (only Bayern and Juve excluded).

In Italy, France and Germany you also get more money for league success than for EL success so teams have little incentive to play EL. It is true that Italian teams that cannot play CL take EL very seriously, though.

PL is definitely the one league that has been the least hit by the FFP, except perhaps for the Bundesliga that is super wealthy.

You can't exclude the top team in the league because it suits your argument though?

              France top to bottom 54pts,
              Spain top to bottom 74pts,
              Italy top to bottom 68pts,
              Germany top to bottom 48pts,
              EPL top to bottom 57pts,

I am actually surprised that the EPL is not the best for the difference between top and bottombut Bayern had a very strange year this year where they dropped a lot of points once the league was won very early on and it is only a 34 game league also so if you pro rata the difference it is more like 54pts.

I don't know how you would measure how good a league is I just know that any player that has looked quality in Serie A looks rubbish when they come to the EPL and the only way I can explain it is by saying that the quality of the teams right from top to bottom is much higher in the epl than in any other league. If you look at it on wages alone you can see that the bottom teams in the epl are spending a hell of a lot more than the mid table teams in some of the other top leagues and wages buys quality players.

Re FFP the new money clubs in the epl like city and chelsea suffered severely with chelsea having to offload a whole host of experience players to chop the wage bill and city would have invested a lot heavier in the playing side for quality players if their hands were not as tied. Since these were the Marquee clubs in the EPL the epl has suffered by comparison to other leagues especially as these teams were in the CL every season.

They aren't great keepers. They're good. But they are a long way from Cech's quality.

They both performed very well last season.

People point out one or two blunders that they made over the season, but Courtois allowed Charlie Adam to beat him from his own half, and everyone thinks he's great.

Szczesny definitely did not perform very well, not even well, not even okay last season.

He made a lot of errors, but every error improves a goalkeeper. He has the attributes to be a top keeper.

                  And 'that' touch against Hull.

Ospina has an 80% save ration this season, higher than Cech over the past 3 seasons.

He has made 1 error at Arsenal. 1. And we spend £11m and £100k a week on a 33 year old on a downward curve in his career, probably kick out Wojjy who, despite what some people say, has the potential to be a world class keeper.

I agree I think chesney was better than ddg the year before last and while he suffered last season I think the whole defence suffered due to Kosc missing so much. I don't think it was a coincidence that when Kosc came back that Arsenal def improved.

In the 24 games kosc played 60mins or more Arsenal had 11 cs and in the other 14 games they had 2 cs. It could of course be that because Ospina made more saves meant more cs for Kosc but I personally think players don't get as easy chance when Kosc is playing, they seem to be shooting under pressure or from angles when he is playing.

Its about now for Arsenal . we wont have this team forever , lets try and strike while its coming together .

Cech is a made man , and will bring huge solidity in defence . Confidence to assert himself in controlling that defence. Thats huge imo

                This is absolutely the point.

Petr will organise that defence, he's very vocal and has enormous stature with all he has won. The whole defence will be driven from behind.

He's a perfectionist and that extends to the whole team, not just his role as GK. He's used to playing behind defenders like JT and will expect that level of concentration and commitment in front of him. He will improve Arsenal considerably, no doubt of it.

A top CB and DM and Arsenal would be serious contenders now. The only one likely to sabotage it is your manager.

Hey. He's the one thats got us back. Arse only had money to spend 2 seasons back and has been spent very wisely, on a relatively limited budget. I am happy with what he has done.

Tactics. Has he learned his lesson? That's what I'm referring to.

If he's willing to adapt tactics for his opponents (as he began to do last season) then Arsenal will be very dangerous. If not they'll flatter to deceive again.

This is certainly what I am expecting / hoping for. I figure Chelsea had no option but to ,make Courtois number 1 last season , at risk of losing him. Cech still well up there as one of the best around. Strikes me as an intelligent guy and Arsenal really need to move fast to make the most of their best squad in a decade

He is a very intelligent guy and also a nice one. But fiercely professional, I imagine he'll be bringing Lollichon with him and those two test everything on a continual basis - reactions, agility, positioning... Cech has actually taken goalkeeping to a new level of professionalism and has set up a special goalkeeping programme inside his football academy.

Which good mid-table teams do you think will hold nailed on 4.5m defenders?

I'm thinking of Stoke, Swansea, West Ham, West Brom (expect them to be mid-table under Pulis) and Crystal Palace. I'd include Saints and Everton in this bracket but I think their options are bound to be too expensive. And if you think another club that struggled last season will be mid-table (kinda 14th-8th), you're welcome to include them.

Swansea, definitely. May have been one or two at Stoke. The other top 10 team was Palace and I don't think they did... though I am prepared to be corrected as this is all from memory.

Yeah I just had a look and it seems outside the top 7 (city, pool, chelsea, ars, eve, tot, utd) that the next up were saints, stoke and newcastle.

          Southampton had no 5.0 option.

The only ones Stoke had were because nobody knew who was first choice at lb and second cb so we had Wilson (Huth was presumed first choice and was 5.0m I imagine) and muniesa when he played but basically they were all 5.0m or more.

Newcastle had a few for some reason. Collocini and Williamson were both 4.5m and santon + yanga mbiwa were both 4.5 also. Personally I went with Collocini as I thought he was great value at 4.5 considering the price of the cb's in the rest of the top 10.

Based on that I'd say only possibly Crystal Palace will might have a 4.5m option.

      Hey Lucy!

I reckon all the promoted teams will have them as well as the majority of the bottom half teams. West Brom look unlikely and may come in at 5m min.

...and I obviously didn't read the post properly!! My bad 😛

Yeah I'm dubious about WBrom too. I was just listing teams I deem 'mid-table'. 😉 Wondered which of those will be 4.5. I'm not sure Wham will have 4.5 options either, come to think of it.

    3. Dino
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I'm doubtful any of those teams will have a 4.5m option unless it is a player that breaks into the team that wasn't playing last season.

If WBA get an unheralded lb or rb they might be 4.5?

Newcastle and Sunderland if their new managers can get them properly organised could be the value defenders this season.

Toon/Sun rotation back on the cards again?

Personally I think I'll be going lescott (as long as he is not over 5m) and either one or both of the wba gk's (depends on if their is a playing 4.0 option from another team). After that I don't know where I'll be going.

Really don't think he's good enough for a top 4 side (which is your aim), and he really doesn't suit your style.

Rodgers ditched Carroll in a click, so I don't see why he'd want Benteke, albeit he is more dynamic than that carthorse.
