Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Jack Grealish

The defining feature of Tim Sherwood’s managerial stint at Tottenham Hotspur was his willingness to promote youth – bringing talented youngsters like Nabil Bentaleb to the fore. Sherwood maintained that trend on his arrival at Villa Park, as the precocious talents of midfielder Jack Grealish were handed the opportunity to impress.

Grealish’s displays played a key role in Villa’s end of season form which saw them escape relegation and book their place in the FA Cup Final. Villa fans and Fantasy managers alike are now expecting more from Sherwood’s latest protege.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder was afforded his first Premier League start under Sherwood and has since gone on to excite with a composure and confidence that belies his years. Speaking to the press last month, Sherwood insisted it was no surprise that Grealish had made such an instant impact, given that he’d earmarked him as one to watch during his spell as Tottenham’s youth team coach:

“He’s always been like that ever since I’ve seen him play from 16 years of age in youth teams. He likes to show everyone that he’s a top player. He makes the difference. But you don’t really get the credit for it until you do it in front of 39,000 fans.”

Sherwood clearly has a “project” to work on in Grealish; an array of off-the-field concerns have surfaced as a result of recent alleged incidents. If the Villa boss can quell these issues and nurture his undoubted abilities, Grealish could well emerge as a handy Fantasy asset next term. Here’s why…

Key Factors

    • Having forged his way into the Villains’ starting line-up for their 3-3 draw against Queens Park Rangers in Gameweek 31, Grealish impressed enough to cement that berth for the subsequent six matches. Although Grealish was tested in a central role, Sherwood primarily deployed him as the most advanced left-sided player in a 4-3-3 set-up, with Christian Benteke leading the line and Charles N’Zogbia or Gabriel Agbonlahor occupying the opposite flank. In spite of this attacking assignment, Grealish is expected to retain his midfielder classification in next season’s Fantasy Premier League, which bodes well for his prospects in the budget bracket.

    • Notwithstanding his influential displays during Aston Villa’s run-in (particularly in their 3-2 defeat to Manchester City), a single assist across 822 minutes should ensure that Grealish’s value stays in the budget bracket next term. Having started last season at 4.5, he looks likely to rise to around 5.5 – a scenario that could entice a healthy number of Fantasy managers to snap him up as their fifth midfielder.

    • One of Sherwood’s chief assignments upon taking the reins at Villa Park was to get them scoring again, following an eight-match winless streak that harvested just one goal under Paul Lambert. Having netted just 12 times in their first 25 Gameweeks under the Scot, the West Midlanders went on to chalk up 19 goals in the final 13 fixtures – on a par with United and Spurs and surpassed by just five outfits. With the emphasis very much on attack, then, there’s every reason for being optimistic that Villa could offer us value for money in the final third of the pitch next time around.

    • Although Grealish served up a paucity of Fantasy returns, his underlying stats improved considerably upon Sherwood’s arrival. The youngster’s minutes per shot quickened from 84.7 to 62.6, whilst his frequency of key passes also sped up, from 63.5 minutes to 44.7. Indeed, as mentioned in our recent members article on Sherwood’s Villa, Grealish’s average of 1.8 chances created per appearance under the new manager was more than any team-mate, whilst he sat joint-fifth in terms of goal threat, averaging 1.2 attempts per league outing.

    • Villa’s opening set of fixtures also look promising for the youngster. Sherwood’s side face trips to Bournemouth, Palace and Leicester in the first ten Gameweeks and with home encounters against Sunderland, West Brom, Stoke and Swansea also on their agenda, the Midlands side square up to just three (MUN, liv, che) of last season’s top six over that period.

I really like Jack Grealish. If he's 5m he's in my team.

Gotta say I'm really surprised Southampton are happy to let Clyne go for £12.5mil....

I mean seriously, who else in the league is better defensively than him? I can't think of many others, apart from Azpilicueta able to excel in that area noticeably.

Home-grown too and in his prime. Thought it would've taken closer to the £20mil mark to get him.

I suppose contracts run down and the value of players diminish every year

Still think Clyne is easily the best RB in the league, and could warrant a higher offer especially for an English player.

Great business for Liverpool, all they need to change is that wretched way BR is using his fullbacks now

I can see the appeal for Coleman

I don't think he's better defensively than Clyne but he's extremely good at getting back after being so high up the pitch after attacking

I can see why a lot of people would like that too, they are quite similar

I said Coleman when I replied, but that was in a FPL context. As for reality, it's a close one.

Mmm - good point. Having said that, if he was after a stronger defender maybe it's surprising LVG hasn't pursued Clyne. Maybe Clyne's heart was set on joining his mates at Liverpool.

If Coleman moves to Old Trafford would he be on your shortlist? He would on mine if he's below 7.0.

We had no way of negotiating. Only Liverpool were interested, and his contract is expiring. We either sell at the highest price we believe we can get out of Liverpool or let him go for free.

On a serious note isn't it annoying that the best fixtures until international break are for SOT, SUN, AVL and LEI. Worst fixtures for CHE, WBA, EVE and NEW. Do your plans still have a CHE, WBA/EVE and a cheap NEW defender?

I think Chelsea defenders will outprice their points return this year compared to other options

I'm considering Liverpool defence instead considering their CS returns last year for such a disorganised backline. If they can get it together this year, they could be a great option.

WBA,definitely. Pulis can defend against pretty much anyone

Chelsea defender for sure, I don't know if Felipe is going to stay but if he leaves I'll go with Azpi. Ivanovic under 7.5 would still be a great option though

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

U21 - strategy for the final.

How did the semi-finals go for you? Can you now field 11 in the final with your remaining transfers?

Who will be the key players for the final?

And what strategy will you adopt- all or nothing, or hedge your bets? I'm assuming those who put their faith in Denmark and Germany in the semi-finals will have some serious thinking to do.

6 players out, but 7 FTs

Being Portuguese, should go all portugal, but if i want to have a chance to climb in rankings need to go in a different way. But national pride don't let me pick a team with only Sweden players.

Probably will copy Jafooli team 😉

Had Guidetti (C) plus Hiljemark,Silva,Oliveira,Guererro & Sa. Only Downside is that i benched Mario.

Ballsed it right up yesterday and well out of the running now
Backed the wrong two heavily yesterday and it seriously backfired
With just the Transfer Hub ML to play for now, ( gone from decent lead to 3pts adrift)
and WC intact , i'll be fielding mostly Portugal with Guidetti,Thelin and Tibbling i think
      May go Periera captain

      55 points (50 from the 6 Portuguese)

Went with 4 Sweden on the bench, so no problem in fielding 11 in the final.

I'm going 9 Portuguese (max possible) and Thelin and Tibbling.

On 198 pts (32 OR) so got to captain a differential.
      Maybe P.Oliveira or I.Cavaleiro.

Who would be more important to Arsenal/utd, cech or Schneiderlin?

    1. Lucy.

Cech. Arsenal needed him more than United needed Schneiderlin, IMO. Now had it been Schneiderlin at Arsenal, I'd have said he was a more crucial signing than Cech.

Schneiderlin to United is massive .. They need a long term replacement for Carrick and he is the man for the job. With his premiership experience he will do really well at United. I think cech to Arsenal is a massive transfer for them and one that could possibly be the difference in finishing above United. But I think Morgan's move to United would be a more important one as he will be at the club for a lot longer than Cech will b at United

Youtubers only prefer some selective action to make a video out of players; so I personally find it most of the time misleading.

Markovic need more time, he's playing time was totally restricted and usually used in alien position. I'd reckon he;s one for the future.

Sound fair - There is clause for Germans team (25M Euro / £17M) for Firmino.

Hoffenheim didn't want to sell to Germans club and decide to sell him for more money to us. We paid £22M + 7M add on / £24M + 5M (depend on sources).

Personally think we not really overpaid.

How will you deal with the South American players like aguero/Sanchez possibly missing the start of the season? Will you be leaving money in the bank to upgrade straight away? Take a couple of hits after one or two weeks, or planning an early wildcard? Maybe bony/ramsey could fill the gap...

Yep, ive played a few (finished in top 50 of the fantasyleague.com one this year). Its brilliant fun. Its my personal favourite way to play fantasy football. Auction Day is class. Some key things i learned is that you want players who play, not chelsea midfielders who sound good but see one game every month. You need solid defenders (as you lose a point per goal in that game and there are not appearance or bonus points, so losing points hurts). Weve added some additional rules, like every person must have two players (total) from the three promoted teams combined during the season. Makes for a more interesting auction and ups the value of those promoted players.

Ive played three and won three auction leagues. Ivanovic and Aguero have been vital to me both years. Good luck!

By "players that play", I mean those not prone to rotation compared to those who are. Saw too may friends buy players that were overpriced considering their gamtime was under question. Those risks can pay off, but Id rather not take them unless I have to.

The original comment wasnt meant to sound as patronising as it looks to be now i read it back. sorry! #facepalm.

It wasn't patronising at all! I was pretty happy to hear from someone with experience in an auction like this - basically nothing on the web for football (our football that is).

And yeah, I agree - I went for late picks of Downing/Siggy last season in my draft. Paid off far more than people picking up bit-part players.

I'd be tempted with a Willian kind of fellow though - assuming Chelsea don't buy anyone else there. His numbers should increase if he plays as much as he did this season.

Awesome! The system we're following is a nominate and bid system for each player. The biggest issue I'm having right now is trying to figure out what my maximum bid for each player should be - do you have any thoughts / tips on that?

Yup, Aguero is a definite target for me though I feel like I'll let Ivanovic go to another bidder and pick up Azpi for cheaper instead. Expecting the price to be very high on Ivan.

I find the FPL prices can be a helpful start. I'll prepare a spreadsheet with my top 100 players and the costs id be likely to pay. The idea being that my team of 16 only contains players from that top 100, despite our 12 man league. Its not always possible, but it gives me something to work with.

Those prices are never on the money of course, when bids start flying around but its a good reminder on the day to pay so much for defenders and so much for stirkers etc. Especially helpful after your 5th pint I find...

I tend to take FPL prices and presume that defenders will be maybe 10-20% more than that and strikers up to 200% more than that (eg I paid £18m of my £100m budget for v Persie last year (ouch - thank god for aguero (27m bargain) and Ivanovic (8m!!) - almost half my budget on 3 players. You have to remember that many players at the end will go on frees. So I aim to create a good 6-10 player spine and then pick up the best people left for small bids / free as and when I can. You can spread your money about more, but you need to ensure you always either own a top striker or have enough to bid strongly for one. If you leave the auction without a goalscorer, you have pretty much lost yourself the league in my experience. We all say you cant win the league on auction day, but you can lose it.

I think I was somewhat on the right track then. We're doing an 18-man squad instead of a 16 this season but my thoughts were the same.

Way I had seen it, there were about 20 top tier players in the league. With a 10-team league - that would mean each team should get 2 of them. My first target would be to snare at least 3 of them. In addition, I was budgeting my entire bench at 2m each (1m would be minimum bid with a total budget of 200-250m) - just because I want to be able to have an edge over the people who've left 1m for those picks (and take my pick).

Ivan was a steal there! You know what, do you have a list of what values various players went for last season? My biggest concern is the budgeting for the top guys (say Aguero, Hazard, Sanchez) - that kind of list should give me a clear idea (also should help show me how the prices end up falling - in what kind of pattern etc).

              Cheers!

These are the ones that were on my list, I have added their FPL starting price and the price (I think) they ended up going for at auction. I had Auston on a free and let him go after a few weeks. Still Wont the league, but was gutted.

                D. Sturridge (LIV) £11.5 £26

One can hope but I would not bank on it yet. Nothing solid.

Really depends on how we play though - he could play in a pivot with Ramsey (together, they wouldn't really need a DM) or play instead of Coq or even play in place of Santi.

The beauty would be that we would be able to rotate Santi/Ramsey/Jack/Coq/Vidal using a variety of combinations depending on the opponent/match situation.

He is not a DM so doesn't replace Coq. I prefer Cazorla (even in CM ) to Vidal. Maybe looking at Wilshere's/Ramsey's place in the side

      Wishlist for FPL...

FPL make public, on their site, the transfers status as per TotalFPL
FPL have a rethink of UFPL to simply be a bigger and better version of FPL....including transfers

How can UFPL be a bigger better version of FPL? It would be the same game but you have to pay 😕 I Iike the UFPL system, much more like the real game. You pick your squad, can only make transfers in the two windows and if you get injuries/bans in between, tough, that's why you have a 25 man squad.

        1. Dr Dream
          • 11 Years

A smaller than 25 man squad with transfers as per FPL and continue with the existing in gameweek switches. For most people the transfers part of the game is the best bit...and they've taken it away for those daft loans.

I know you like it but it isn't working for most. A lot have looked at it and decided not to bother...so from the game developers point of view, and FPL, it's not working. It needs to be a game that the majority of folk want to take up as oppose to the minority....which it is now.

Most people gripes over UFPL are about missing deadlines. In gameweek subs would be a disaster for FPL due to different time zones/work commitments etc. It would ruin the game completely for many

Chelsea are favourites to secure the services of goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, according to Sky sources.

Would be a shame if he actually sits on the bench. He is a decent keeper and should play 1st tea football. But seeing the trend, he might leave. Would he go?

@Paddypower The Dalai Lama and Vidal are trending on Twitter. Coincidentally, Arsenal have equal chance of signing either of them.

Arsenal have agreed a deal for Arturo Vidal, just as Man Utd agreed a deal for him every transfer window for the last two years. #mufc #afc

They have a class twitter account! 😆

If our mens team are the Lion's and our women's team are the Lionesses that really does sound right, after all real lionesses do all the hunting while the lions just prance about looking tough

Using one team's success as a stick to beat another team is completely pointless.

Isn't the Babadook more about metaphorical references and inner psychological demons than an actual supernatural boogeyman?

I'm not saying the rumours are right or anything, but if you were Wenger with £25m to spend on a midfielder, you'd get Schneiderlin over Vidal, right?
