Pre-Season

Sleeper – Mesut Ozil

Having arrived at the Emirates for fee thought to be in the region of £42 million, it’s fair to say that Mesut Ozil’s career at Arsenal has fallen short of expectations. Furthermore, the German playmaker suffered a downturn in his Fantasy output in 2014/15, ensuring he emerges as the latest player to feature in our pre-season Sleeper series.

After making an encouraging start to his Arsenal career, scoring five goals and providing ten assists in 2013/14, expectations were high for the playmaker ahead of last summer.

The arrival of Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona, allied with Aaron Ramsey’s improved form, meant that the German international struggled to capture the attention of Fantasy managers as the campaign got underway.

Valued at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the same price as the Welshman, Ozil made a slow start to 2014/15. Rested for Gameweek 1 due to his exertions for Germany in the 2014 World Cup, he registered attacking points in just one of his first six appearances, bagging a goal, assist and full bonus in the 3-0 win against Aston Villa. In the last of those six outings against Chelsea, the former Real Madrid man suffered a partial knee ligament tear, which would rule him out until the New Year.

Ozil returned to action in Gameweek 21, coming as a late substitute against Stoke, before reclaiming a starting berth in the 5-0 win against Aston Villa two matches later. He repeated his 13-point haul from the reverse fixture, and would then find his best form of the season, scoring twice and grabbing four assists in his next seven appearances.

Unfortunately for Fantasy managers, Ozil’s season would end as it had started, with no attacking returns from his final seven matches. He finished with just 103 FPL points, to his name, down on the 137 he accumulated during his first year with the Gunners, although he did make four less appearances.

When comparing Arsenal’s midfielders, Ozil fared well in terms of creating chances, teeing up a team-mate every 27.8 minutes compared to Sanchez (39), Santi Cazorla (40.5) and Ramsey (44.9). Indeed, his frequency of key passes was quicker than any regular in the Premier League, with City’s David Silva the closest on 29.5 minutes.

Furthermore, Ozil’s goal conversion rate of 13.8%, which was more than Sanchez, Cazorla and Ramsey, is also impressive, though bearing in mind he fired an effort every 67.2 minutes, it highlights the fact that the German is more inclined to play in a team-mate rather than fire off a shot himself.

THE PROSPECTS

With so many options for Fantasy managers to choose from the Arsenal midfield, the pricing is going to the crucial as to how we view their assets. Sanchez is sure to be the most expensive, with a price tag of around 10.5 to 11.0 expected, but with the Chile international possibly set to miss the start of next season due to an extended rest following Copa America, the battle for our attention may well be between Ozil, Ramsey and Theo Walcott. While Cazorla has penalty duties and shares set-pieces, his role alongside Francis Coquelin in the double-pivot makes him a less attractive option, particularly as he is likely to be priced similarly to the aforementioned trio.

Walcott may well earn plenty of suitors after finishing the season strongly as a central striker but with Olivier Giroud also in the mix, his security of starts still remains an issue. Ramsey has spoken of his desire to play in a more central role after spending much of last season on the right flank but the versatile Welshman may find it tough to nail down a regular spot in his preferred position, with Ozil’s presence in the centre looking set to continue.

What plays into Ozil’s favour is that he should benefit from an extended summer break following the exertions of the World Cup last year. Speaking ahead of the FA Cup final, the German international admitted he felt tired at the beginning of last season:

“I had the World Cup after my first season here. It was such a great time but when I came back, the fitness coach said that even though I felt fit, the freshness was missing. I continued to give everything to help the team and that’s how I got my injury.”

Also, his playing time from last season, when fit, suggests he is less prone to rotation than others, completing the full 90 minutes in 16 of his 22 league appearances, and appearing only once as a substitute. If Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are both fit for the start of next season, along with any further new additions, there is going to be a real squeeze on the midfield slots, making Ozil’s relative security of starts all the more valuable, while the German also takes plenty of Arsenal’s set-pieces.

Having netted nine times in the 2012/13 campaign for Real Madrid, Ozil has shown he can score at the highest level. Last season, David Silva enjoyed his most prolific campaign in England, netting 12 league goals, and although there is less competition for places in the City midfield, that leap made by the Spaniard is certainly one that Ozil has the potential to rival. If he can add goals to his already high assist potential, he could become a viable alternative to Sanchez and provide an unlikely value route into the Gunners midfield.

Repost from yesterday, as I think it's worth to share this great FPL related story again:

I've read yesterday an interview with Mariusz Fyrstenberg who finished last FPL season 6th OR. During the season I've seen his name being mentioned many times in FFS articles (for being ranked in TOP10) and I knew the name but was thinking it's only a coincidence.

Now I'm sure that this is indeed Mariusz Fyrstenberg professional tennis player, who is one of the best doubles players in the world, and has just been knocked out from Wimbledon after coming back from injury 🙂 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariusz_Fyrstenberg

In this interview he mentioned that was talked in to FPL by other tennis players (Including Andy Murray) and he is playing in a private draft league against them, which he won twice in a row.

Fyrstenberg was laughing that once he went in a bid war against Murray to get Rooney in to his team, and Andy dropped out suddenly. He mentioned later to Mariusz later, that he backed out after finding out during a phone call with Wayne, that he is injured

Apparently FPL realized that Fyrstenbger is quite a successful tennis player and they've also contacted him to arrange an official interview for the website.

Love that kind of FPL related stories 🙂

I'd like to see arsenal buy a defensive midfielder... Someone like William carvalho or lars bender. They would then have enough to push for the title Imo. An upgrade on giroud is logical but maybe not essential what with Walcott being fit again (& preferable imo). I'm a liverpool fan but can't see us winning the league so would prefer to see arsenal do it this season. I've always admired the way they play & are managed.

It must be so frustrating to be an Arsenal fan. Always just 2-3 players short of being a complete team. On top of that, when everyone can see they need a DM, Wenger Will go out and buy a young unknown winger

Just on the article. I'd be tempted by Ozil as he's the only other Arsenal attacker bar Sanchez that's nailed but

"though bearing in mind he fired an effort every 67.2 minutes, it highlights the fact that the German is more inclined to play in a team-mate rather than fire off a shot himself."

Goals are an always will be king in FPL and I'm not sure Ozil scores enough to make him worth it as a stand-alone option from Arsenal

Sanchez, Walcott or Rambo for me, depending on price

Ramsey is in my thoughts for sure

not totally nailed but he's first choice so should play the majority of games and shoots more than Ozil

Issue is he doesn't seem to like the right wing role so if Wenger is sticking with Caz and Coq as CMs then Ramsey's appeal is dented a bit, he needs to be a CM IMO

Antalyaspor have declared their intention to sign Barcelona star Lionel Messi in five years after snapping up two of his old team-mates this summer.

Former Camp Nou forwards Samuel Eto’o and Ronaldinho have both made the move to the newly-promoted Turkish team in recent weeks. They are now dreaming of being able to persuade Messi to make the same move in the future.

Antalyaspor president Gultekin Gencer, speaking to LigTV, said: “I hope that the president who succeeds me is capable of bringing Messi here in five years’ time.”

      Valdes
      Puyol De Boer
Guardiola Stoichkov Luis Enrique Xavi Iniesta

To my mind he's not been the same since that miss late on in the Bernebau

Think a new striker will be signed, and we may be stuck with Hernandez for the start of the season now after his collarbone injury...

Not unless we have a decent striker lined up already. As someone said above, we can't go into the season with just 2 strikers when one is Wilson. If United can't sign anyone, they should keep rvp. He has a deadly finish which could still be useful.

We'd have 3 strikers on the books, you're forgetting Hernandez. He's out for around 2/3 months though after breaking his collarbone so we may be stuck with him for now.

Nobody is saying he'd be a starter. I was just pointing out to these that he's another striker we have, and may be stuck with for 6 months. One new addition up front would be just fine imo.

Then again Hernandez is not the type of striker who you can play 90 minutes after Rooney's imminent red card in GW2 and he won't be available anyway. I wouldn't trust Wilson to play 90 and Rvp is just the player who can do that. I don't mind losing him as long as we have a decent striker coming in, until then think we should hold onto him.

I'm pretty sure van Gaal wouldn't be willing to let van Persie leave without signing a new striker. 🙂 Not when there's only Rooney, Hernandez, Wilson on the books, and Hernandez is injured...

Losing RvP isn't a problem for United.

      Replacing him properly will be.

Rooney is going to be in their first choice team all season so they have to plan around him. That makes bringing in another suitable striker kinda awkward.

Also another position they definitely have to strengthen now. They need to do quite a lot of business at this stage.

United realistically (maybe more long term not this window alone) should pick up 2 CBs (one more about potential?) a RB, Schneiderlin as you say and possibly 2 Strikers, at least 1.

Following Ruth's post on starting the season with a 433 formation due to Value. I thought I'd have a look at a possible starting team going by last seasons Points Per Game and Value to see what is the best formation?

    Myhill 5m (5.1ppg) 4m
    Terry 7m (4.7ppg) Azpil 6.5m (4.6ppg) Koscielny 6m (4.4ppg) Bertrand 6m (4.1ppg) 4m
    Hazard 11.5m (6.1ppg) Silva 10.5m (6ppg) Mane 7.5m (4.6ppg) 4.5m 4.5m
    Aguero 12.5m (6.5ppg) Austin 8m (5ppg) Sakho 6.5m (4.3ppg)

Now I wouldn't mind starting with this side at all providing Austin is at a team with decent fixtures eg Leicester.

    Alternatives Costa 11m (5.8ppg) Kane 10m (5.6ppg) Cisse 6m (4.3ppg) Panti 5m (4.4ppg)

Beirut's such a lovely place from what I've heard. I've been wanting to visit it from some time now but the conditions there and other plans has not made it possible.

In turkey, you have to get a so-called Passolig card in order to enter stadiums. I don't know if you can get it from Lebanon. After you get that card, you have to check http://www.biletix.com for the tickets.

no. even the fixtures are not released yet. that passolig thing is totally bullshit. They built this system due to political reasons and hooliganism. They try to prevent anti-government groups entering stadiums. But you can come to CL games 🙂

"Boycotted by the various fan groups, the Passolig has also caused resentment from other fans. The system requires people to sign up and provide personal data such as national ID, photo etc. before they can purchase match tickets, which raises doubts about how this information might be used. The process of obtaining a card is also challenging, especially for foreigners. "

            Oh dear

*Ogbonna. And yes, he would be an improvement on Reid, Tomkins, Collins.

Do you reckon that real footballers rush to make an FPL account when it starts just to see what they themselves are priced at?
