Scout Notes – Pre-Season Friendlies – Tuesday

Liverpool open their summer schedule in convincing fashion, with Divock Origi finding the net on his debut. Cameron Jerome continues his fine pre-season form for Norwich, Moussa Sissoko nets for Newcastle, whilst Bournemouth put four past Philadelphia Union.

True Thai Premier League All Stars 0 Liverpool 4

Brendan Rodgers fielded two different XIs in each half of the Reds’ victory in Bangkok, handing debuts to Adam Bogdan, Nathaniel Clyne, Divock Origi, James Milner and Joe Gomez. The Northern Irish manager deployed his charges in a 4-4-2 midfield diamond from the start, with Lucas Leiva shielding the defence, Joao Carlos Teixeira and Jordan Rossiter playing just ahead, and Lazar Markovic operating from the tip behind a strike duo of Rickie Lambert and Danny Ings. Teixeira delivered an inch-perfect pass for Markovic to latch onto and score the opener, before serving up an accurate corner for Mamadou Sakho to double the lead.

After the break, Rodgers then tinkered with his tactics and rolled out a 4-3-3 formation, with Origi leading the line as a lone striker. Adam Lallana added the third after being introduced in the second half, while Origi capped off the scoring with a close-range header from a Jordan Henderson corner.

Post-match, Rodgers praised Origi’s performance, with the Belgian also striking the woodwork twice prior to finding the net:

“I thought he was excellent. You can see his movement and what really pleased me tonight was his persistence. He had a couple of chances that he missed that he would want to score. But he kept going, he was very positive, and obviously he showed how good he is in the air. [It was] a great cross into the box and it was a good header that he scored, so we’re very pleased for him.”

Hitchin Town 0 Norwich City 10

Alex Neil’s outfit dispatched of the seventh division side in clinical fashion, boosting their goal output to 17 from just two pre-season fixtures. Neil elected to name two unique XIs either side of the half, with the first wave of players lining up in a 4-3-3 formation. Jamar Loza and Josh Murphy supported central striker Cameron Jerome, with Alexander Tettey, Graham Dorrans and Louis Thompson manning the midfield. Jerome (5.0) once again made the difference in the early exchanges, bagging a brace in the first half to send the Canaries into the dressing room 2-0 up – he’s now scored five times in two matches, albeit against lower level opposition.

The second half saw Gary Hooper spearhead a 4-2-3-1 set-up, with Tony Andreu, Wes Hoolahan and Jacob Murphy forming the three, and Youssouf Mulumbuu earning his debut in the double pivot. The Canaries scored at ease after the break: Andreu netted a hat-trick, Gary O’Neil recorded a brace, and Hoolahan and Steven Whittaker grabbed a goal apiece. After the encounter, Neil confirmed that Norwich are not contending with any fresh injuries while revealing that his players will be afforded increased pitch time from here on in:

“It’s just a case of making sure that we get good quality work in without picking up injuries. Our quality at times was fantastic throughout the game, but we need to step up again with the opposition that we’re going to face. The game on Friday will see everyone go from playing 45 minutes to playing 60. We’ll gradually bring it up to the 90-minute mark.”

Philadelphia Union 1 Bournemouth 4

The Cherries cruised to victory in their pre-season opener, with manager Eddie Howe handing minutes to 24 players. New signing Joshua King produced a cool finish after 20 minutes to break the deadlock, before Calum Wilson extended the visitors’ lead with a side-footed effort. Marc Pugh popped up for Bournemouth’s third with a curling strike, while a converted penalty from Tokelo Rantie rounded off the scoring after Pugh was felled in the box.

Howe was quick to talk up the performances of three debutants (Sylvain Distin, Christian Atsu and Tyrone Mings) after the final whistle, highlighting Mings’ attacking threat in particular:

“I thought all the new guys really put their mark on what they are going to bring to the squad. Sylvain (Distin) with his experience, Christian (Atsu) with his ability and flair, and Tyrone (Mings), while he was on the pitch, was marauding and looked a real threat, so I was delighted.”

Club Atlas 2 Newcastle United 1

The Magpies tasted defeat in the first match of their US tour, with Moussa Sissoko supplying their solitary goal. Steve McClaren fielded his starting line-up in a 4-3-2-1 formation, with Sissoko, Siem de Jong (in “the hole”) and Yoan Gouffran playing behind lone striker Papiss Cisse. Vernon Anita and Jack Colback occupied the double pivot, while the back five was comprised of Tim Krul, Daryl Janmaat, Mike Williamson, Jamaal Lascelles and Massadio Haidara.

Sissoko cut the hosts’ lead just before the half, following two goals in quick succession from Club Atlas frontman Gonzalo Ruben Bergessio. The Toon came closes to equalising through Cisse – who saw his header saved on the goal line by the opposing keeper – but couldn’t breach the Mexican outfit’s defence in the second 45. McClaren enacted six changes with 20 minutes left on the clock, affording minutes to Rolando Aarons, Ayoze Perez and Gabriel Obertan.

Sacramento Republic 1 Sunderland 0

Dick Advocaat opted for a 4-4-2 set-up in the Black Cats’ second pre-season run-out. Wes Brown and John O’Shea formed the centre-back pairing, while debutant Adam Matthews and youngster Tom Beadling were deployed in the full-back berths. Jermain Defoe and Steven Fletcher played ahead of a four-man midfield comprised of Lee Cattermole, Jack Rodwell, Sebastian Larsson and Emanuele Giaccherini.

Fletcher proved to be the Wearside club’s biggest threat, testing the keeper with a low strike and clattering the crossbar with a header in the first half. Will Buckley, Connor Wickham, Danny Graham and Liam Bridcutt were also given minutes in the second half.

In terms of absentees, Patrick van Aanholt (injury), Sebastian Coates (extended rest due to Copa America duties) and Adam Johnson (visa issues) all missed out but are expected to join up with the tour at some point.

Finally, a reminder that we’re collating all the pre-season action via a dedicated section here as the action unfolds.

I would instantly swap ADM to Ramsay/Schweinie. Not too sure about JRod and the 3-5-2 line up... Plus I miss Hazard, or even Cesc

Wouldnt go Hart prefer Cech. Mata/Depay over ADM.if you want UTD midfield. Walcott is a risk after the first gw or two. I would also wait and see on Payet.

Weirdly I like it. 2 def from both CHE and ARS is not ideal if the attackers start banging them in you have to use a transfer to lose one def to get another attacker.

So probably better off swapping Azpilicueta and Koscielny for 2 £6m defenders from top teams?

Well it's still not a lot plus you won't captain Aguero every week if you have Hazard. I just can't decide if it's worth it. Decisions decisions......

It's not a choice between the two, it's a choice between Silva and Silva's midfield alternatives, and a choice between Aguero and Aguero's forward alternatives.

I think Aguero may get 30-40 pts more than Kane, Rooney, Costa and I can see Silva doing the same with his rivals. Would love both but it kills the balance.

Aguero gets that many more points but he does it in about 7-10 less games. When fit, he is by far the best player on this game and his injury periods are a good chance for differentials

Hi again everyone, I see it's pretty much the same faces around here 🙂

Just seen FPL has updated for this season, so I briefly whipped a squad together without really thinking to deeply about it, just going off my own predictions.

Taken a bit of a lazy approach if I'm honest and will play Hart and Ivan every week and two rotating pairs around them. The midfield might make you sick but that is unfortunately just what I fancy at the moment, 3-5-2 with flexibility up top. No Kun.

    Hart | Hennessey
    Ivan | Williams | O'Shea | Turner | Mings
    Hazard | Walcott | Deulofeu | Zaha | Atsu
    Rooney (C) | Costa | Hooper

    85.5m

No Hammers due to my affection for that nifty little cheap midfield trio. 🙂

Realistically, what are the must-haves in a GW1 team?

    Chelsea defence?
    Hazard?
    Arsenal mid of choice?
    Rooney?

There should be a distinct lack of a template team for 1 GW at least.

wouldn't say there are ever 'must-haves', just players with more favourable form/fixtures than the others.

Many different combinations of players could get you the highest score

No such thing. Hazard is never essential with Fabregas in the early stages. Chelsea defence normally starts slow, Arsenal mid is unpredictable with who plays and points are well spread out and United are never must-haves when there are other better strikers like Costa and Aguero.
The only time anyone is ever a must have is when Aguero gets a double gameweek against Bournemouth and Norwich both at home and everyone uses the triple captain thing.

Unsure what to do with my 3rd striker spot.

    Currently have Aguero - Sakho - ???

??? is currently Berahino at £6.5, but I'm less than confident in this choice. Is there any merit in:

    A) Finding £0.5 to upgrade to Rodriguez/Gomis
    B) Downgrading £1.0 to Deeney/Wilson, and investing that money elsewhere

Stoke keeper, Haugaard, did very well against Everton....hmmmm at 4.5 he could be an option. But the question is who will be first choice between him and Butland. Time will tell.

Ighalo and Vydra will share gametime. New formation as well at the mo so may pan out differently to last season

    Is Deeney good value?

Lots of people have Deeney as their 'cheap forward' including me. I have had a look at how many goals we might expect from him this season, by looking at how other recently newly promoted strikers who came into the PL having scored a lot of goals getting promoted did in their fist season:

    Austin: Champ: 31/17 (apps/goals) vs PL: 35/18
    Ings: 40/21 vs 35/11
    Vardy 37/16 vs 34/5
    Murray 42/30 vs 14/1
(neither Hull or Cardiff had a high scoring striker)

Adding these figures up gives an average of 150/84 (0.56 goals/app) in the Championship followed by 118/35 (0.30 goals/app) in the Premier - i.e. 54% the strike rate once promoted.

    Back to Deeney:

He played 42 games, scoring 21 goals (0.50 goals per app). If we assume he follows the trend above and his strike rate is 54% of that (0.27 goals per app) - assuming he plays all 38 games, that would suggest that he will score 10 goals this season.

At 5.5, 10 goals compares favourably with all 5.5 strikers and most of the 6.0 strikers.

Conclusion: yes he appears good value!

From memory I think he picks up quite a few yellow cards but value? Yes, probably.

Correction - He appears a good punt. He will only be good value if he starts scoring points.

Rooney if you have Fab/Haz and no Mata/Depay

      Sterling if no Aguero/Silva/Yaya

      Sure Sterling will feature heavily

Same problem I'm having. Leaning towards Rooney and taking Depay out my team for Silva or Yaya.

Surely you would have to go for Kane if you were interested in Tottenham. Though some have expressed interest for Chadli

    Last on a previous thread.

    Thoughts on this:

    Ruddy, Butland
    Azpi, Johnson, Bassong, Richards, Francis
    Silva, Fab, Ozil, Cabaye, Wanyama
    Aguero, Benteke, Sakho

Do I need to double up on Norwich and Stoke? Decent rotation...
Thinking if downgrading Sakho to Bojan/Deeney/Wilson to upgrade Wanyama.

    Any suggestions welcome.

So.......this is where I got to

      Fabianski // Ruddy
      Coates // Lescott // Cedric // Clyne // Coloccini
      Henderson // Fabregas // Silva // Chadli // Hoolahan
      JRod // Kane // Costa

or should I swap JRod out for Deeney to free up cash to get into Man U's midfield?

      Thanks

Interesting, I've had Lescott and Cedeic in at one point. Cedeic is untested and Lescotti isn't a cheap as I'd like him to be.

JRod is also an interesting call, I think he's likely to play out wide, so is that a waste of a forward? Deeney is a guaranteed starter and will probably do alright.

Who is nailed in united team that will get attacking returns?

    Thoughts on:

    Butland - Ruddy
    Ivan - Lescott - Cedric - Williams - Richards
    Ramsey - Sigurdsson - Hendo - Hazard - Anya
    Kane - Rooney - Wilson

    OR

    Butland - Ruddy
    Ivan - Lescott - Cedric - Williams - Richards
    Sanchez - Bolasie - Hendo - Hazard - Anya
    Gomis - Rooney - Sakho

    Thanks.

Who thinks Aguero will start vs GW1?

My dilemma exactly! Drafted him in anyways so i dont have to bother wildcarding in GWK 4...would rather have to struggle to get Sanchez into my team when fit than Aguero after the season starts. Drafting in Aguero after the season starts is only possible with a wildcard imo.
