Moving Target

Moving Target – Christian Benteke

Following weeks of speculation, Liverpool finally announced the arrival of Christian Benteke in a £32 million deal. The Belgian became the Merseysiders’ seventh new signing in a summer of transition as Brendan Rodgers’ side looks to put last season’s disappointing sixth-place finish behind them.

Speaking to the club’s official website just minutes after putting pen to paper, the 24-year-old thanked the Reds’ upper management for sanctioning the move, before lauding the Merseysiders’ storied past:

“I’m very happy to be here and I would like to thank the owners, Ian [Ayre] and of course the manager for their massive effort to bring me here. It’s hard to show your emotion when you’ve just come from doing something [like this] but of course I am very happy. I know Liverpool is a big story. They’ve won [many] league titles and the Champions League five times and of course the UEFA Cup and a lot of trophies. I know it’s a big club. I think there are quality players, a lot of good players with big names of course. I’m happy to be part of this team and will [try] to help this team reach its goals.”

The History

Born in Zaire (DR Congo), Benteke’s family emigrated at an early age to Liege, Belgium. A two-year stint at the youth academy of Standard Liege was followed by a move to Genk in 2006. The striker earned his first start for the Belgian club during the 2007/08 league campaign and went on to notch two assists in seven appearances. After making just six starts (three goals and two assists) in the next full season, Benteke was shipped out to fellow Belgian Pro League outfit K.V.Kortrijk in the summer of 2009.

Benteke excelled in his new surrounds, tallying 15 goals and nine assists across 36 outings. Nonetheless, the robust striker spent the following campaign on loan again, teaming up with top-tier side KV Mechelen. Having bagged seven goals and one assist in 25 appearances, Benteke was finally afforded a run of starts for Genk in the 2011/12 season, notching 16 goals in 32 league outings. Alerted by his impressive strike rate, Aston Villa landed the Belgium international in August 2012.

Benteke’s debut season for the Villains served up 19 goals and four assists in 34 appearances, trumping Dwight Yorke’s record (18) for the most goals amassed in a Premier League season by a Villa player. The former Genk marksman was subsequently named as the runner-up to Gareth Bale for the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Knee, groin and Achilles complaints limited Benteke to 24 starts in the 2013/14 season. A run of 11 blanks from Gameweek 5 marked a downturn of form that saw him chalk up a less eye-catching haul of ten goals and three assists across 26 appearances. This lack of rhythm carried over to the season just past, with Paul Lambert’s more pragmatic tactics seeing Benteke fail to score in 14 of his first 18 appearances. The appointment of Tim Sherwood in the Villa Park hot seat then triggered a dramatic upturn in fortunes, with Benteke recording 11 goals in as many starts to close out the campaign.

On the international stage, Benteke represented Belgium at every youth level from Under-17 to Under-21, scoring 24 times in 37 outings. He has subsequently found the net in seven of his 24 appearances for the senior side.

The Prospects

With Daniel Sturridge still recuperating from hip surgery undergone at the end of the previous campaign, Benteke looks set to leap ahead of Danny Ings, Divock Origi, Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert to spearhead Liverpool’s attack in the campaign ahead. The Merseysiders’ pre-season encounters so far suggest that Brendan Rodgers will favour a 4-3-3 system next term, though the Reds boss has also briefly trialled a midfield diamond formation in the early stages of the summer.

Certainly, Rodgers will be looking to Benteke to improve a stuttering attack that ranked seventh for goals scored (52) in the previous campaign, tallying 48 fewer than during the 2013/14 season, when Luis Suarez and Sturridge tormented top-flight backlines.

Aside from the £32m outlay, the underlying stats also reinforce the notion that he’s the prime selection for Rodgers in Sturridge’s absence. Benteke’s shot conversion rate (16.3%) far surpassed any of Liverpool’s forwards last year, with fellow new boy Ings next in line with 11.3%. Given that he’d scored 18.3% and 14.9% in his first two years in the top flight, the big Belgian’s record suggests he should prove a reliable source of goals, providing he’s given the chances.

The main issue, though, is whether Benteke will fit Liverpool’s possession-based style of play. In his three years in the Premier League, his aerial ability was key to his success – in terms of successful headers, the big Belgian sat second amongst forwards in 2012/13 (with 269) and 2013/14 (with 220) before moving up to first in 2014/15, with 187. Given that Liverpool ranked second-lowest and lowest for crosses over the last two seasons, it’s fair to say he has some adapting to do, with the Reds unlikely to play to his perceived strengths. In saying that, it’s worth noting that only 13 of Benteke’s 42 Premier League goals have came from headers.

Yet to feature in pre-season, Benteke will need to step up his match sharpness with the new campaign just over two weeks away. Priced at 8.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Benteke will challenge the likes of Graziano Pelle (8.0) and Romelu Lukaku (8.0) for a position in our squads. All three suffered from prolonged barren spells last term, yet the former’s late spree gives us the greatest confidence heading into the new term. Certainly, with the likes of Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho feeding him, he should be afforded plenty of chances and may also stake a claim for spot-kick duties, which would certainly have a knock-on effect on Jordan Henderson’s Fantasy potential, given the latter looked at the head of the penalty queue prior to Benteke’s arrival.

The fixtures are somewhat patchy for Liverpool over the first few Gameweeks. Although trips to Stoke, Arsenal and United are less than appealing, the Reds host Bournemouth, West Ham, Norwich and Villa in the first seven Gameweeks, with such a schedule offering Benteke the chance to make an immediate impact. Certainly, Sturridge’s return will need to be monitored, though if the new boy makes his mark early, Rodgers is likely to ease the injury-plagued former Chelsea man back into the fold.

Most likely Stoke starting XI is:

      Butland
      Johnson, Shawcross, Muniesa/Wollscheid, Pieters
      Whelan, van Ginkel
      Odemwingie, Bojan, Arnautovic
      Diouf/Joselu

Adam may get the nod ahead of Bojan if he's still injured. Odemwingie could lose out to another right winger if we get one (hopefully Yarmolenko).
Not sure who will start between Diouf or Joselu.

      Hope this helps.

        This is appreciated.

The defence is what I thought. Would be nice to nail down Wollscheid or Muniesa because that's the 4.5 slot. I'm kind of assuming Wollscheid because they just signed him permanently. Wrong?

Any chance of Johnson wide right and Bardsley or Cameron RB you think?

Bojan shouldn't be fit GW1 right?

Any reply appreciated. You have a talented youngster on your hands in MVG by the way.

I think it'll depend who we are playing whether Sparky chooses Wollscheid or Muniesa. Really unsure to be honest!

Johnson definitely won't be playing RM I can promise you that. Odemwingie, Walters or whoever we are going to bring it, be it Yarmolenko or Adama Traore, will be RM. More likely whoever we buy will be nailed.

Bojan played 45 today and seemed okay but it's touch and go. I think he will be on the bench personally but I hope he will start.

Thanks again. I hope Hughes doesn't alternate Muniesa and Wollscheid, I'd really like a nailed 4.5 Stoke defender without that having to be Butland.

I don't like the Palace defence whatsoever so the 38/38 Butland/Speroni option doesn't interest me at all. I guess I could look at Sunderland/Stoke which is 28/38 for Pantilimon/Butland. But I really prefer the Stekelenburg/Ruddy 38/38 pair I have right now.

I keep seeing this statistic about Liverpool and crossing, and how they won't suit Benteke.

    1. Why would you cross when you have Sturridge / Sterling up front?

    2. They've just signed Clyne, Milner and Firmino - all should be able to deliver for Benteke.

I'm not saying Liverpool will start playing like Burnley or something, but it's an irrelevant statistic imo.

Ok, I'm focused now and I want to try and get an answer.

One of the Mods earlier, Andy I believe, was talking about Jenkinson.

The premise was that the fact that we know he wont be playing is an advantage, as It allows you to know your first sub will play.

I have asked a few times and no one really seems to know.

what is the value in this? I just dont get it.

You get points off the bench, so you can get a green arrow on the final day of the GW.

      • 10 Years
      8 years, 11 months ago

The idea is that you start Jenkinson. He doesn't play so your first sub comes on *for certain*.

Therefore, you can put a high-scoring player like Rooney on the bench. When the game does it's final update on Sunday/Monday night, Rooney comes in. You therefore get a bigger rank boost on the final change, seemingly making it a good weekend.

There is no *actual* benefit obviously. It's just psychological / a bit of a laugh.

That's it. No value. No benefit.

I didn't really understand either. But I think it assumes you rate West Ham as good for defensive returns up to the point you decide to play your first wildcard..... because if you have a good 4th/5th defender depending on your formation, then you'll get the points for that automatically, then have a 5m defender picking up points in future weeks that not alot of people will have chosen due to him being marked as 'unavailable' for GW1.

I recognize this is relatively weak defensively, but all these guys are guaranteed starters and I can rotate them early in the season. Please RMT overall.

    Schmeichel - Hamer
    Cedric - O'Shea - Huth - Bassong - Francis
    Hazard - Walcott - Sterling - Mane - Wanyama
    Rooney - Kane - Sakho

Six of one and a half dozen of the other. They are essentially the same, but I like Huth's stats a bit more and think he might have better bonus potential.

Trim that .5 from Mane or Sterling

        Fabregas 2 goals, 13 assists, one missed match (2x5 + 13x3 = 49 points)

        Hazard 6 goals, 5 assists, played all matches (6x5 + 5x3 = 45 points)

hey guys what you think of this ?

    Ruddy (hennesy)
    bellerin mings azpi (rose targett)
    mane toure hazard hendo ritchie
    rooney kane (jerome).

    A keep
B downgrade mane to wilshere which will give me 2.0 in the bank
C buy wilshere and upgrade elsewhere and if so to who?

I think targett is safe until bertrand returns and also i choose mings ahead of francis because he tends to get a lot more yellow cards. and also i think bellerin will get the knod ahead of debuchy.. only think i wish i could do is upgrade toure to sterling but mane fixtures are too good.. thought guys?

Just a note from me. I've seen Berhaino mentioned a few times today ahead of Sakho

Saido has pens in his favour but West Brom have a tough opening and I can't see them scoring too many. Sakho has much more favourable fixtures (at least at home) and at this point fixtures is all we have to go off. A switch from Sakho to Berahino or Mitrovic around GW9 or 10 could be useful

GW9 is also when I plan to wc, so all the better IMO

No, Demi, most have this wrong. Chelsea wanted to keep him, Mourinho wanted to keep him. The only problem was that (like Lukaku) he wanted to be a 1st team regular and wasn't willing to wait. He had had a successful loan season at Werder Bremen and thought he was ready. Understandably in a way.

Sulked a bit when he wasn't playing every week according to reports but no attitude problem apart from that.

It's a very difficult thing to bring players of that age into elite teams. Zouma has the character and attitude to learn and continue learning and not expect it all immediately. MVG appears to be similar. De Bruyne was a different character. Essentially Mourinho preferred Oscar and De Bruyne didn't handle it well.

            • 13 Years

Ah fair enough, makes sense. I can't envisage him having that problem at City now, if he were to move. Another year older, assume he's cut out the sulking now and he's shown his class for a full season in another league.

            1. Ruth_NZ
              • 9 Years
              8 years, 11 months ago

Well, that's the thing. He'd now come in as a star player and be more or less guaranteed 1st team football. Issue over.

If Chelsea could have kept him 18 months more, even on loan, that would have been great and he'd be entering this season as 1st choice at Chelsea no doubt. But De Bruyne didn't want that. I don't blame him for it and I don't blame Mourinho either. He'll doubtless be a big success at City if it happens.

I don't see it as "game over" though, very far from it. What about the City defence? The attacking flair was never the problem and while Sterling and (maybe) De Bruyne will strengthen it, that doesn't address the area where they are much weaker.

Very true. It's Chelsea's loss but these things are very difficult to handle (see above).

Luck plays a considerable part in things where young player emergence is concerned. If Adebayor and/or Soldado had started last season well where would Kane be now? He was lucky that a slot opened up, and Spurs were lucky that it did too. But Pocchettino had no intention of making Kane 1st choice when the season began.

Same with Coquelin. He was so far from Wenger's plans that he was loaned out, and not even to a PL club.

Superficially your team looks dodgy. Looking a bit deeper and understanding the tactics behind it, it is a good team. Similar to what I've got.

And don't worry about about the goallies, I have them as well (at the moment) and are good for atleast the first 17 games.

The set up with heavy in midfield, the same as I have ( Walcott, Caz, De Pay, Tadic & Lens) that may be tweeked still.

I'd give your team 8/9 and I have Pelle as well.

Thanks, I just like the thought that atleast one will disapoint, so thats who I will lose, and pick up the best 5mil mid

My thoughts are to drop a midfielder to a cheap one in order to adjust a striker to Kun. I'm also not starting with Costa, who may be a card collector against the Citeh defense. And if I have no urgent transfers or band wagons to jump on, a steady increase in defense.

Yaya may be good pick if he's on pens. Decent defence but I'd want all guaranteed to start and you won't get that in a 4m defender. Strike force is good but no Aguero may be an early issue for you.

Also prefer Ivan to Azpilicueta (despite price difference), but that might screw up the rest of your team.

All my tinkering has been teams based around having Aguero as my thoughts were he will miss one or two games tops (with possible sub appearances) and I was happy to take the risk and have transfers to use elsewhere. The two last midfield slots look too weak?

I know some won't like the Benteke pick but I reckon he will do well. Pelle too.

Any thoughts on a better 5.5 mid than Schneiderlin? Or better to downgrade another mid to get 4 decent starting mids?

    Ruddy Butland
    Ivanovic Bassong Huth Mings O'Shea
    Fabregas Cazorla Sterling Scheiderlin Anya
    Aguero Benteke Pelle

I like but as you can see from my team I went heavy in mid, I feel its gonna pay off. so two cheapish mids seems light to me, but then I went for 0 cheap mids. nice front line.
