Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round Up – Sunday

Romelu Lukaku bags a hat-trick as Everton breeze past Hearts. Theo Walcott boosts his Fantasy stock as he snatches Arsenal’s winner against Wolfsburg, Newcastle new boy Georginio Wijnaldum nets again, whilst Palace taste defeat at the hands of Sporting Lisbon. Here are the notes from Sunday’s pre-season encounters…

Arsenal 1 Wolfsburg 0

Arsene Wenger made ten changes to the XI that swept aside Lyon 6-0 on Saturday, with only Mesut Ozil retaining his place. This saw Petr Cech handed his home debut between the posts, with a back-four of Hector Bellerin, Gabriel, Calum Chambers and Nacho Monreal. Mikel Arteta and Santi Cazorla were stationed in the double-pivot, whilst Jack Wilshere, Ozil and Jeff Reine-Adelaide tucked in behind lone frontman, Theo Walcott.

Reine-Adelaide supplied the pass for the only goal of the match, as Walcott strengthened his claim for a central berth by slotting home just five minutes after the break. Wenger made five alterations over the course of the second period, with the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Olivier Giroud afforded further minutes off the bench.

Post-match, the Gunners boss had plenty to say over Walcott’s performance in an interview with the club’s official website:

“Another goal for Theo and I’m not surprised by that because I played him through the middle. I’ve always said that he’s a goalscorer because he has the movement, he has the timing of the run, the speed for the finishing, and he has an eye for taking his chances at the right moments. When he gets into these positions he finishes well. Yesterday he nearly scored when he came on as a substitute, today he scored. I believe that Theo will score goals. In his ideal world he would like to play with a strong guy next to him, a player who is very strong physically, and he play off him. We have so many offensive players which makes that very difficult to combine all of them together.”

Wenger’s line-up for the Community Shield on Sunday will clearly give us the clearest indication on his thinking ahead of the season opener against West Ham. Walcott appears to be in the driving seat to claim the striker’s role, leaving Olivier Giroud potentially frozen out to the bench in a repeat of Arsenal’s previous Wembley appearance for the FA Cup final. While Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla remain clear early midfield targets in the light of Alexis Sanchez’s expected Gameweek 1 absence, Walcott has emerged as potentially the most explosive option. He has currently claimed 7.8 ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Hearts 1 Everton 3

A Romelu Lukaku hat-trick steered Everton to victory at Tynecastle as the muscular Belgian showed poise from the spot to convert two penalties. Gareth Barry was fouled in the box to allow Lukaku to strike home his first goal, while Seamus Coleman’s assist then set up the striker for his second to hand Everton the lead. Kevin Mirallas was then brought down to allow his compatriot to complete his hat-trick.

Significantly, the 3-1 victory marked the first pre-season appearance for Leighton Baines – confirming the fact that Lukaku is now ahead of the left-back in the pecking order for spot kicks.

Baines took his place in a first-choice back four that was made up of Coleman, John Stones and Phil Jagielka playing in front of Joel Robles in goal. Roberto Martinez deployed his side in an attacking 4-3-3, anchoring the midfield with Barry, James McCarthy and Leon Osman. An attacking trio of Lukaku and Mirallas, flanking Arouna Kone through the middle, provided the threat.

The likes of Tom Cleverley and Ross Barkley were reduced to appearances from the bench. Bryan Oviedo was also amongst one of the subs introduced in the second period as he made his belated return from injury.

It remains to be seen if Martinez maintains the new attacking 4-3-3 setup, although post-match the Everton boss was clearly enthused by his side’s display…

“Going forward we looked a threat, but then we always kept a good balance and only a lapse in concentration early saw us concede from a dead ball situation. Apart from that I thought we kept our defensive duties to a good level.”

Sporting Lisbon 2 Crystal Palace 0

The Eagles ended the inaugural Cape Town Cup with a 2-0 reverse at the hands of Sporting Lisbon. Alan Pardew again kept faith with the 4-2-3-1 setup but shuffled his pack following the 4-0 win over Supersport United two days ago.

Alex McCarthy made his Palace debut in goal following his move from QPR; he played behind a back four made up of Joel Ward, Scott Dann, Damien Delaney and Pape Souare. James McArthur and Johan Cabaye were deployed in the double pivot, with Jason Puncheon, Jordan Mutch and Dwight Gayle in the attacking three, supporting Glenn Murray up front.

Pardew was again without Yannick Bolasie through injury, while Marouane Chamakh was also absent and Wilfried Zaha was limited to a cameo role from the bench following a recent knock. Post-match, the Palace boss bemoaned the lack of creativity from wide areas…

“We lacked a little bit of width today – Zaha hasn’t been fit and only trained for one day this pre-season so that was his first 10 minutes of action and Bolasie was injured in training on Thursday and it’s a shame he wasn’t involved because we probably missed a little bit of his x-factor.”

This would suggest that we’ll see a different attacking three take to the field against Fulham on Saturday, in a line-up that is most likely to reflect the teamsheet at Norwich on the opening day.

Sheffield United 2 Newcastle 2

Steve McClaren continued with a 4-2-3-1 formation for the trip to Bramall Lane. A back-four of Daryl Janmaat, Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor and Massadio Haidara sat in front of Tim Krul, with Jack Colback and Vurnon Anita stationed in the double-pivot. Further up the field, Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum and Ayoze Perez took up the attacking midfield spots behind Papiss Cisse, with new signing Aleksandar Mitrovic yet to be involved.

Wijnaldum (7.0 in FPL) netted his second goal in as many appearances for the Magpies, courtesy of a Papiss Cisse pass, before Siem de Jong – one of seven second-half substitutes – notched his side’s second after slotting home a flick-on from a Colback corner. Although Steven Taylor (4.0 in FPL) started at centre-half again, McClaren is clearly determined to strengthen at the back – the Magpies have agreed a deal for Anderlecht centre-half Chancel Mbemba, with the FA expected to confirm the transfer on Thursday.

The Newcastle boss also played down rumours of a move away for Fabricio Coloccini. The Argentine has yet to play a part in pre-season due to injury and has been linked with a move to Palace but McClaren is clearly keen to keep him:

“We want him playing. He has got a little niggle, which he has every season and that has to be taken care of. He is working on conditioning. In America he was out most of the time because of the surface in the last game. We are still working and have time. He needs to have a good week and needs to play Saturday. We need him in the team. I have come in and they have told me to assess the squad. Colo has come in and I have been delighted with his attitude and the way he is around the place. That’s great – but we need him on the field. I looked at Coloccini in training and he’s one of our best players. I know things were difficult last season but I want him out on the field in a Newcastle shirt. He’s great for the team.”

After the match, new signing Wijnaldum admitted he’s still suffering from jet lag after arriving late to the club’s tour of the US before returning to the UK just a few days later:

“It is always hard to play after a flight of 10 hours but what is harder is that a lot of players still live in the time that they have in America, so most of the time I wake up at four o’clock and I can’t sleep any more – today I had the same problem. I am always pleased to score goals and always happy if I make goals. I’m always looking for that one chance and today I had that one chance, when you get it you must be ready.”

Who is the best 5.5 goalkeeper?
I don't see cech and courtois getting too many save points/bps. Am I correct?

Thank you for all of the help so far, I have appreciated it 🙂

I don't think people like 5.5 million goalies . They are seen as too expensive and will not pick up save points . I think the main reason is expensive defenders tend to pick up bonus points which adds to their appeal and they have a goal scoring threat eg Ivan , Kosc , Terry etc . I have Pantilimon and a 4m cheapie and most people have rotating cheapies like Butland and Ruddy

last season it worked out great. arse away 0-0, pool away 0-0, everton 0-2. of course you dont expect much from these away games but the total seems to match or top the best rotation.

it's not only that you wanna save 0.5 with rotation you can actually harm your points total and lose your mind when rotating. panti every week last season was great. if you would have rotated panti, you'd have lost over 50% of his clean sheets.

You asked about Brighton a few days ago, I had had to go so no answer then.

If the new loan Scot from Spain brings in the attacking returns we have so badly missed for the last couple of seasons we might make mid-table. We were lucky to escape relegation last year and played the most awful football which has led to a slump in gates.

Posted this a week or so ago:

Over the last 3 Seasons how many Goals, Assists and Clean Sheets do you think Ivanovic has got in those 9 games? So 1st 3 games of 14/15 + 1st 3 games of 13/14 + 1st 3 games of 12/13.

5 Goals, 1 Assist & 5 Clean Sheets. Even without adding bonus points in that would be a total of 71 points over 9 games (when including 2 points per game for the 60+ mins).

That averages at 7.89 points per game. Was the first name on my team sheet myself!

I'm not saying it is, I'm just saying if your gonna have a Chelsea defender I'd have Ivanovic.

He seems to start seasons flying, as seen by his stats from the previous 3 seasons.

The long and short of it is he's not exactly a bad player to have even without these stats is he?

The question was Terry or Ivanovic, the above is one of the reasons I will be going with Ivanovic.

Hows the below draft team looking gents?

    Cech/Hennessey
    Azpi/Huth/Francis/Cedric/O'Shea
    Caz/Haz/Mane/Richie/Payet
    Deeney/Benteke/Rooney

    Idea is to rotate Francis/Cedic & O'Shea/Huth (Bench Cedric & O'Shea GW1 / Bench Francis & Huth GW2)

Then to also rotate Deeney / Payet / Richie (Bench Payet GW1 / Bench Richie GW2/3 / Bench Deeney GW4)

At GW Decide between which has preformed best out of Payet / Richie, then downgrade 1 to get possible Aguero in for Roon

Yup.. They were great moving forward. Their defense was very suspect. Hence, why i mentioned defensive performance. A punt on Arnie/Bojan/Adam could work out great in a few weeks. Butland however will need a 4.5 partner

I like Ritchie.. However, he's not really lit it up for Scotland whenever i'm seen them play. So maybe he's not ready for a higher level right now. Could go either way tbh. Abdi at 1 million cheaper intrigues me more.. Fixtures scream for a Ritchie punt though. tough one

Probably the best player at Watford after Deeney.. it's only his injuries that i'm worried about. When fit he's fantastic. Seen a lot of him last season.. could be a bargain. Gave me goosebumps watching him in that Fulham game in December. Used to bet on him and Deeney a lot last season hence why i watched a lot of Watford games 🙂

It's not like a few years ago when you could pick up Brady on penalties for 4.5/5M.

Agreed.. 0.5 too expensive especially when there are proven alternative at just 0.5/1 million more. too expensive for a 5th and too much competition for a 4th mid. Planning a rotation with Sakho for home games though

I can't see how he's much of a risk.. Huge number of goals/assists last season, lovely fixtures, nailed on and I can't see you expecting much from any other 4th mids at 6.0 and below.. At worst, he picks up a string of 2s and you swap him out for the cheap player that does emerge.

Hi all. Really need some advice on my team and would appreciate any feedback.

    Ruddy Butland
    Azpi Cedric Huth Francis Coates
    Haz Mane Walcott Chadli Wanyama
    Rooney Wilson Benteke
2m in the bank to help fund Rooney->Aguero.
I would prefer Kane to Benteke but That will mean having to raise an extra 1m when getting Aguero in. It could mean a hit and means I will have to sell Chadli. Is it worth it?
Feel free to suggest any other changes to the team.

I've been wracking my brain as to which Man City Midfielder to go for. Sterling (+1.0) or Silva (0.0), up until now I have been in the Sterling +1.0 camp. My reasoning being the extra 1.0 should help as well as the chance of Sterling playing further up the pitch as a forward every now and again.

I thought I'd look at both of their contributions to their teams over the 2014/2015 Season:

Sterling played a part in 35 games, playing a total of 3053 minutes scoring 7 goals and assisting 8.

Silva played a part in 32 games, playing a total of 2666 minutes scoring 12 goals and assisting 11.

When you look at those stats I guess you'd say it's obvious, pick Silva. If you look at the number of goals Liverpool & Man City scored when Sterling and Silva we're on the pitch however and derive a percentage for the goal involvement of each player it's a lot closer:

In those 35 games Liverpool scored 47 goals, Sterling was involved in 15 of those (31.91%)

In those 32 game Man City scored 70 goals, Silva was involved in 23 of those (32.86%)

Yes Liverpool struggle to score last year and you'd expect Man City to out score them again this season. The question is would you expect Sterling to carry on getting as big a slice of the pie in a team scoring more goals? Or is Silva still the safe pick even though he's the more expensive?

    1. Mavric Marco
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 10 months ago

Sterling + 1.0 is better for me to start with, but if your talking all season long I expect Silva to out score him

    2. Boris Bodega
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I would definitely start with Silva, and monitor Sterling, who I would expect to start scoring in a team like City, I would be surprised if he doesn't flourish - but there is always the possibility of him fading away to bench fodder if he loses his confidence, you just never know.

Start with the settled player who has proven returns, and switch to the puntier player once they start scoring either big or regularly or both.

Gareth Barry has played in all of Everton's pre-season games, and he is 4.5M, a good 0.5m cheaper than Albrighton who I have as a fifth MF atm. Anyone have any info on his nailedness?

Should be nailed on, but he' much more likely to give you cards of different colours than any goals/assists.

RMT please guys, sorry for the long post, but wanted to sort of go through my thinking for some of my picks to help provoke some discussion, rather than just getting your standard number out of 10. This isn't meant to be gospel, it's just my own thoughts based on my own deductive reasoning, and I appreciate all forms of feedback.

    1.0 in the bank:

    Butland/Ruddy

Azpilucueta Huth Francis ( O Shea) (Jenkinson)

    Hazard Walcott Sterling Henderson (fletcher)

    Rooney Benteke Deeney

    GKS:

    Butland/Ruddy

I went for these two because I feel they rotate well/ there's so much value further up the field I didn't really want to invest more than 9 Million on my two GKS.

I've seen some RMT's take this to the extreme spending 8.5k with one non playing GK, however there isnt' IMO a 4.5 goalkeeper strong enough that I would be happy having him play playing every Gameweek.

    Azpilucueta:

Nailed on now that Filipe Luis isn't around. Has a lack of any real attacking potential, but IMO will provide a consistent stream of clean sheet points that I'm not sure a Koscielny will offer.

I feel a bit silly not having Ivanovic, but read that his and Azpi's PPM aren't that dissimilar from each other so think it's worth saving myself the 1:0m will be worth it.

    Huth/O Shea

Good rotation, decent fixtures over the first few games, and IMO each of them are the best 4.5 options for their teams.

    Jenkinson/Francis

Good rotation. I really like West Hams 2nd and 3rd week fixtures (Home vs Lei+Bou).

Cresswell is obviously the better option but feel the 0.5 saved can be used to improve other key areas in the team, help fund a GW4 transfer to Aguero.

Admittedly I know little about Francis, I'm pretty much hopping on a FFS bandwagon here, may potentially switch him to Mings, although picking 2 promoted team defenders in my side doesn't fill me with loads of confidence.

    Midfield

Hazard - One of the two best players in the Prem. Nailed on. Explosive. High Ownership. No brainer. I see lots of arguments here on Fabregas' inclusion, and the logic that he usually starts the season well, but I just feel there are going to be better options in the 8.5-9.0 price range than him/no way he can match last seasons assist total.

Walcott - I consider him to be the biggest gamble in my side. There seems to be a consensus here that he is nailed on, however I'm not 100% sure. His points per minutes, explosiveness, and the near certaintity Sanchez isn't around first week makes me feel he will probably start the first few GW's but is he really nailed on long term?

Sterling - I consider Raheem the most undertalked option. He was 9th top midfield scorer last season in a Liverpool side that weren't exactly firing on all cylinders.......now he's playing alongside Silva/Aguero and Yaya in an attack that has potential to be very explosive.

There's been reservations about his nailed on-ness but I don't believe City have paid £50m for Sterling to sit on the bench.............It's my belief that by mid-way in the season he will be one of the most selected players in the game.

    Henderson-

Best value in the game IMO. The 7th highest scoring midfield last season/On set pieces/pens and is now Liverpools main man in midfield with a price of 7.0 Million! Don't really understand the Milner/Henderson question that's being posted on the boards.

Fletcher - Solid 4.5 Option. Arguably a little less nailed on than Wanyama, but has more assist potential.

Rooney- A lot depends on the striker United buy/if they do buy one......but if he starts up front he is a lock to score goals. I plan to transfer him out to Aguero in GW4 after I downgrade Walcott in GW 3.

Benteke - With Hendo, Milner, Lallana, Firmino and Coutinho playing behind him I can't not see him scoring goals. YES I did think the same of Balotelli last season but there's a hunger in Bentekkers not present in Mario's.

Sakho- I really wanted West Ham attacking coverage with their glorious 2nd and 3rd week fixtures.

I am not overly enamoured with his long term prospects to be honest, however there always ends up being a surprise attacking prospect in this price range, and at 6.5 M, Sakho's price is going to make this quite a seamless transition.

I like your team and the reasoning. Midfield and attack are very similar to mine. Only difference is I chose Fab over Hazard, and spend that extra cash on the defence --> I've got Ivan and a premium goalie (Cech) + a 4.0.

Think you're good to go 🙂
