Scout Report – Jose Manuel Jurado

Watford’s summer overhaul continued in earnest with the capture of Spartak Moscow attacking midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado last week. The 29-year-old – who played under Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores during his spell with Atletico Madrid – expressed his delight at the chance to fulfil his dream of playing in the Premier League:

“I am very happy to come to Watford and I want to play right now. The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and it’s a dream for a player to come and play here. I am happy to be with Quique again and I hope this season is good for everybody. I want to play in England and Watford is a good opportunity to play in this league, and I like this opportunity.”

The History

Born in Cadiz, a province of Southern Spain, Jurado began his footballing education at Real Madrid, where he spent three successful seasons turning out for the B side. Having netted 13 goals in 95 appearances for the reserve outfit, Jurado earned his league debut with the senior team in October 2005. After notching a further couple of La Liga cameos in the 2005/06 campaign, he made the switch to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2006.

By virtue of injuries to Maxi Rodriquez and Martin Petrov, Jurado was afforded a regular starting berth during his debut term at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, bagging one goal across 33 outings. After finding his playing time drastically reduced the following campaign (three starts), the Spanish playmaker was shipped out on loan to Mallorca for the 2008/09 La Liga season.

Jurado enjoyed the best period of his career to date with the Balearic club, chalking up nine goals and ten assists in 35 appearances. He subsequently enjoyed an increased role upon his return to Rojiblancos, featuring in every single league tie of the 2009/10 season while amassing seven goals and five assists. A solid attacking output wasn’t enough to earn Jurado a starting berth at the start of the 2010/11 season, leading to his sale to Schalke.

Managing just three goals and six assists from 31 appearances over two years in the Bundesliga, Jurado made the switch to Spartak Moscow in September 2012 in the pursuit of first-team football. An initial loan deal was made permanent just two months into his stay in Russia’s capital, as the former Real Madrid starlet went on to bag three goals and four assists in 18 appearances (30-match season). The 2013/14 campaign proved to be Jurado’s most profitable in the Russian Premier League, harvesting eight goals and two assists across 29 outings. After earning just ten starts in his final season in Russia, Jurado opted for a change of scenery this summer.

The Prospects

The versatile Jurado has typically operated from a central attacking midfield role throughout his career, but he’s also spent a fair amount of time stationed on the flanks – particularly the left. Having played as a number ten for all but six of 32 outings during his debut campaign with Spartak, he alternated between a variety of roles (attacking/centre mid, winger and support striker) in the 2013/14 season, before occupying a left flank berth for nearly half (13/28) of his starts in the previous campaign.

Handed his debut by the club just three days after signing, the Spaniard made an instant impact by providing the assist for Troy Deeney’s winner against Dundee United. Tellingly, he was the only Watford player to be handed 90 minutes on Saturday, which suggests that Flores is keen to build up the playmaker’s match sharpness ahead of the season kick-off.

The Spanish boss has now employed a 4-2-3-1 in all but one of his side’s matches and it’s fair to say there’s plenty of competition for the three slots behind lone striker Deeney. Ikechi Anya and Odion Ighalo also started at the weekend, though the likes of Almen Abdi, Matej Vydra and new boy Steven Burghuis are all tussling for starting berths.

Jurado’s previous stint under Flores may well work in his favour and at a price of just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he could stake a claim as a viable cheap midfielder. From a Fantasy perspective, Anya – at 4.5 – would be the more budget friendly option, whilst Vydra and Ighalo’s classification as forwards somewhat lessens their appeal.

The Hornets’ early schedule (eve, WBA, SOU, mci, SWA, new) sits on the tougher end of the spectrum, which might deter interest in their favourably priced assets. Indeed, Watford are rated bottom for attacking potential for the first six Gameweeks by our season ticker. For those who fancy Flores’ side to quickly find their feet, though, they alternate home/away with fellow promoted side Bournemouth if you’re looking for a rotation pairing to consider.

I'm thinking about it. The thing is that I just don't know how often I would captain him. He scored a lot of points last year, but he also played more minutes than any other midfielder. He got a lot of bonus points, but the bonus point system has changed. He did not have any multi-goal games. Not even a brace. I am not saying he is not a great player. He is. But it seems to be more about consistency than pure explosiveness. Not having him does not scare me. Compare that to Aguero who 4 braces, 1 hat trick, and 1 four goal game. Sanchez had four braces. Costa even had 2 braces and a hat trick. Not having one of those scares me. I am more likely to captain one of those types of players because of the potential for a multi-goal game.

Get Toby if you want to go for spurs defense, attack is quite light. Probably you'll captain Hazard week in and week out doesn't look like a good strategy tbh

Good keepers, but probably .5 too high ... Prefer 4.5s
Don't like Spurs defenders, not sure Yoshida nailed (assuming Neil not Steven Taylor)
      Like midfield, assuming 3-5-2
Would spend the 1.5 to upgrade one forward to Sakho

With Bolasie now talking about possible suitors he may leave behind Cabaye in the number 10 role and Zaha nailed on....Oddly though he takes a lot of appeal away if he leaves. Any thoughts !

Cabaye will be #10 whatever happens. That's what Pardew did with him at Newcastle. Bolasie may not like the idea of playing wide right.

I'm starting with him. The way I see it is he's a slight gamble due to tough opening fixtures (besides the 1st game) but he's decently fixture proof and could be a differential, at least among the FFS community. I wouldn't look too much into the hattrick because 2 were penalties and one shouldn't have even been given. Being on pens is a plus though

Curious... anyone starting with both Aguero and Hazard in their initial squads? I've tried several times to construct a team with both and I really don't like what I am left with. So of the two, if you were to only have one - which? For me it is Aguero. As much as I love Haz (and he has done so well for me the last several years), I really think Aguero is the better option.

Would anyone like to have a guess as to how Watford will line up?

    ------------------------- Arlauskis/ Gomes ----------------------
    Nyom -- (Prodl/ Angella/ Britos/ Cathcart)* -- Holebas
    ------------------------------ Capoue ---------------------------------
    Berghuis ------------------------------------------------------ Anya
    ------------------- (Jurado/ Ighalo/ Vydra)** -------------------
    ------------------------------ Deeney ---------------------------------

    * Two from these four centrebacks
** Two from these three attacking mids

Personally I think Anya will start at LM. Possesses a lot of pace and stamina, with the ability to beat an opponent and get a cross in or go alone. Great option for 4.5. Might swap sides with Berghuis from time to time.

I reckon Ighalo could be a real threat if he beats Vydra/ Jurado for a start. Could possibly see him deployed up front with Deeney with one of Jurado/ Vydra in the hole.

Toughest team in the league to predict. They've signed ten new players, all from different countries and have a ridiculous amount of options in wide areas.

To put things into context, there's a fair amount which you haven't even mentioned. For example, Valon Behrami should be a starter - very good ball winner.

Meh I watched him and he wasn't great but he did have a good partnership with Capoue so that could be a deciding factor.

Perhaps they will play with two DM in tougher games at the expense of an attacking midfielder, and vice versa with easier home games...

I think until Vydra and Jurado do something outstanding to impress, Ighalo should be first choice behind Deeney

Also Watson and Abdi didn't impress much, so they should act as cover alongside Murray and Tozser

I've watched him too, every week last season for Hamburg. They had a truly awful season and he's maybe not the most glamorous player but he's good at what he does, and that's break up play. No doubt for me he should be a starter for Watford, long term anyway...

You've also still failed to mention Juan Paredes, who was the regular RB last season, so Nyom can't even be labelled a certain starter either. Just showing how difficult they are to predict due to the insane amount of options they have, there's only around 5 that are obvious starters really.

4-2-3-1 with Behrami and Capoue in DM positions and Deeney as lone striker, that's for sure 😉

    like

    kasper and 4.0 GK

    Cedric Azp O'Shea Ward Mings

    Hazard Silva Henderson Depay Walcott

    Kane Deeney Wilson

Basically play a 3-5-2 rotating deeney and wilson

Wow, what a midfield that is.
Defense looks OK... Ward has unfavorable fixtures FYI so maybe start w/someone else.
Your front line could be a big problem if you find yourself wanting to chase an in-form Rooney/Costa/Aguero. Think 4pt hits to liquidate a midfielder.

Here's something different. What do you make of this?

    4.5 - 4.5
    Kosc - Ivan - PvA - Prodl - Francis
    Cabaye - Ozil - Sterling - Sigurdsson - Wanyama
    Giroud - Rooney - Benteke

    1. Sparrer
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 10 months ago

Fabianski - Hennessey would be my GK pairing of choice. Not sure Cabaye and Siggy are worth running in the opening team though given fixtures. Do you not fancy downgrading PVA to O'Shea and turning Cabaye and Siggy into Ritchie and an 8.5?

      1. Pepereina Pizza

Sigurdsson home fixtures are great, and he likes to do it on the road.

PVA attacking fixtures are top 3 for first 8 gw's, and I'm not taking chances on non-defender promoted-team assets.

            new keeper
            Clyne gone
            Schneiderlin gone
= no Southampton for GW1, thanks. I'll monitor and opt in later.

I like this a lot, always a risk with no Hazard but some good differentials in here. Siggy is a reliable FPL player but i think his price has just put people off him, if he was .5-1 mil cheaper a lot more people would have him

I've seen a lot of people "planning" how they will get Aguero in for week 3 but isnt this a pointless exercise, what if the players you planned to transfer out bang a load of goals/assists in, then you would just be bringing Aguero in for his name, you have to play it week to week surely?

I don't think we realise the impact of no 4m defenders. Picking a backline is tough at the best of times, but now it's even tougher. One minute the 4.5s look solid, particularly as you can't go any cheaper and then you see a Cedric or a Kolarov with far more upside and potential for tantalisingly just that little bit more. Last season was pretty poor for cheap defenders but, Southampton and Chelsea aside, all the options were pretty unsatisfactory.

When you consider a premium GK is now within reach too...

Schmeichal/Hennesey - (I'm torn here on wha to do, Kasper was awesome for me last year. Hennesey to WB would be nice for a bit

Azpi = value, Ash Wiliams, Huth, O'Shea, Targett - the D overall seems weak.
Fabs, Depay (he's looked awesome to me in preseason), Ozil (solid, maybe a Wally switch in the near future depending on Aug 2 cup game), Ritchie (dunno... Fixtures are there), Anya (open to suggestions (looking at aarons but want a 4.5 for now)

LeDonk (Gru - at least for the opener), RoonPig (as the main striker, I have to have him), Costa (until I need Hazard or Aguero he scores)

    leaves .5 ITB
