Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Sunday

Sergio Aguero returns to the scoresheet and the Fantasy Football radar, prompting many to hit the transfer trail as City’s early season form continued in style with a 3-0 win over champions Chelsea. Meanwhile, in the Arsenal camp, Alexis Sanchez compounded the need for squad surgery with a performance at Selhurst Park that reminded us of his own Fantasy appeal. Here’s the notes from Sunday’s encounters…

Aguero Paves The Way For City Victory

Sergio Aguero announced his return to the starting lineup with a goal as Manuel Pellegrini’s side recorded a convincing 3-0 victory over Chelsea.

Last season’s Golden Boot winner carved out a wealth of shooting opportunities at the Etihad, with no striker mustering more attempts (seven) than Aguero this Gameweek. Non-owners will doubtless now be clamouring to recruit the 13.0-priced marksman ahead of City’s excellent run of fixtures (eve, WAT, cry, WHU, tot, NEW, BOU) – particularly when the league’s other top-end forwards (Wayne Rooney and Diego Costa) have yet to find their groove.

Indeed, Aguero’s performance provided the catalyst for a frenzy of transfer activity which has seen him claim over 100,000 new owners in the Gameweek to this point. This is likely to lead to the Argentine’s first rise in price in the next 24-hours.

David Silva carded a brace of assists to compliment his assist against West Bromwich Albion – earning two bonus points in the process – while Yaya Toure combined well with Aguero to set him up for City’s opener. Both players currently sit around the 10% ownership mark, with Raheem Sterling (19% ownership) still the more favoured route into City’s attack. Sterling’s ownership is, however, in decline having sustained almost 50,000 sales in the Gameweek so far as a result of Silva and Toure’s recent returns.

Having failed to register a single goal last term, Vincent Kompany powered home his second header in as many outings, boosting his points tally to 25 for the season. In light of Chelsea’s faltering rearguard and the absence of Leighton Baines, the talismanic captain is emerging as a prime pick among the premium defenders. Kompany has claimed almost 80,000 new owners as price teeters on the brink of another FPL price rise to 6.2.

On that note, Aleksandar Kolarov (5.5) is becoming more difficult to ignore as an alternative. The Serbian’s rampaging runs look certain to harvest attacking returns given his propensity to join the attack and his service from a dead-ball. Gael Clichy’s return to the bench might deter potential investors due to the threat of rotation, with Pellegrini’s teamsheet at Everton of keen interest.

Blues Exposed As Hazard Falters

Eden Hazard blanked for the second Gameweek running as the Blues’ defence was picked apart by Manuel Pellegrini’s troops. Only Sunderland (26) have conceded more shots inside the box than Chelsea over the opening two Gameweeks, prompting Branislav Ivanovic’s 30.4% ownership to weigh up their options.

Hazard missed a golden opportunity to equalise with what was only his second attempt at goal across the opening two fixtures. In the wake of Alexis Sanchez’ starring display against Crystal Palace, some Hazard owners might be contemplating a straight swap for the explosive winger. The fact that Chelsea face off against West Brom and Palace in the next two Gameweeks bolsters the appeal of holding tight. However, Hazard has already been sold more than any other midfielder in the Gameweek to this point and is second only to Wayne Rooney in overall sales.

John Terry – who played every single minute of the previous campaign – was replaced by Kurt Zouma at half time, having struggled to contend with the pace and movement of City’s elusive forward line. Although that tactical decision is unlikely to portend a severe reduction in playing time, this new threat of rotation is certainly worth factoring in.

Sanchez Return Inspires Gunners Win

Olivier Giroud bounced back from a listless performance in Arsenal’s season-opener to open his account with a sublime first-time finish as Arsenal ran out 2-1 winners at Selhurst Park.

The France international was again favoured over Theo Walcott in the lone striker role, much to the dismay of the latter’s 6.8% ownership – who will now certainly be engineering exit plans – over 50,000 have sold Walcott on in the Gameweek with his price already dropping to 8.9.

Alexis Sanchez marked his first start of the campaign with an assist, after his header was diverted into the Eagles’ net by Damien Delaney. The Chilean livewire was a constant menace to the home defeat and, based on his display, is surely likely to cement “untouchable” status on the Arsenal teamsheet. Sanchez is still owned by under 10% of FPL managers to this point, despite heavy investment overnight.

Mesut Ozil edged ahead of Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla in the contest between Arsenal’s 8.5-priced midfielders, chalking up an assist and two bonus points for a seven-point haul. The German playmaker is arguably the least prone to rotation among the trio but has registered the fewest attempts at goal (three) in these early stages.

Hector Bellerin reclaimed a starting berth on his return from the treatment room. With match-ups against Newcastle United and Stoke City in the next three Gameweeks (LIV, new, STO), the Gunners should stand a decent chance of securing their first clean sheet of the season.

    Re Wildcards

Worth noting that former FPL champion Matt Martyniak (aka SpiderMatt) played his early.

    https://matthewmartyniak.wordpress.com/2015/08/14/its-wildcard-time-already/

He has four top 1,000 finishes by the way including his FPL crown.

Thanks for the reply - think I may have to ditch Sagna. Gomez might be worth it at the price if he's rotated even as one of 4 £4.5m.

Good point re Ward, may exchange for Richards or Bassong whose fixtures are better.

Cheers for the reply - I figure Mourinho will sort the defence out eventually and Courtois and McCarthy is only now 0.4 more than a £4.5 rotation - take the point though, was considering Hart or even Butland and McCarthy which enable Yaya in midfield over Ayew.

not sure if you've watched United play yet, but Rooney has been truly awful. Game against Villa was one of the worst performances from his in 2-3 years. Offside lots, lack of control and generally detached from the match....hopefully this helps if you haven't seen us play.

?? I'm not sure about this actually, most of my opponents have way more in defence than myself with still a very decent midfield, whereas I've got polar opposites in every position e.g mata/hazard vs Anya in mid. So far it hasn't worked out well for me at all, and doubling up on Leicester and Bournemouth defence really was a shocking mistake, even if they were cheap and starting. I now wish I invested a small amount more in this area.

Right guys here is my wildcard team.

    Any good?

    Ruddy
    Kolorov Shaw Richards
    Sanchez Silva(vc) Payet Mahrez
    Aguero(c) Gomis Pelle

    (Rudd, Huth, Hoolahan, S.Taylor)

    0.3m in the bank

Kolorov a good attacking option aswell as cleanie potential. Yes i know he is a rotation risk at times.. But i feel huth is good enough to come in as a sub any way.

    Hows it look?

  6. Wildcard Template

WC Template front 8 is shaping up with something along the lines of Sanchez, Silva, Payet, Mahrez, 4.5, Aguero, Gomis, 1 other forward.

Besides from the template front 8 for WC teams that everyone is considering, I'm also thinking about certain other very viable options.

Giroud - think he's a great option for the next few and contemplating picking him over Alexis and using the money elsewhere (e.g. Instead of Alexis + Gomis, there is scope for Eriksen + Giroud)

Other Arsenal mids - Ramsey and Ozil both looked very good and we're unlucky not to get more points (or points in general in the case of Ramsey). With Kun being such a convincing captaincy option, this may dent the appeal of Sanchez and suggest that the other cheaper Arsenal mids can prove better value.

Eriksen - has looked very good so far and is always good for a goal, offers an alternative to Chadli and Kane, the latter not being 100% yet.

Yaya - most, myself included, prefer David Silva as an option but Yaya is still a great pick and the 1.5 saved can mean having Benteke/Giroud as your 2nd forward instead of Gomis/Diouf.

Sakho - had some good chances on the weekend and on another day could've had a goal/assist (for the pen). Cheaper alternative to Gomis

Ayew - has looked very threatening so far with some strong stats, again a cheaper alternative to the more popular Gomis if combined with another player (e.g Ayew+Sakho vs Payet+Gomis). Gomis of course has the advantage of penalties. Interesting to see that out of Gomis' 6 shots, 5 were from GW 1.

Southampton - Mane's stats have been good in the past 2 and there is a lot of scope for points with the next 2-3 fixtures, good value as well if picked up at a 0.1m discount. As for Pelle, he's a bit of a donkey as we all know and personally I wouldn't pick him, but seeing as he's the lone front man, it wouldn't be surprising if he outscored popular picks like Gomis in the next 2-3 weeks.

Chelsea? - Have looked completely out of sorts but surely it's a matter of time til they pull their finger out - Hazard of course still a top pick.

Benteke - if he fires today then obviously he will be on WCers' radars, hence pushing them to reconsider some options like Alexis (less need to captain with Kun back) or go for the cheaper combos as mentioned earlier with Ayew + Sakho.

Diouf - 3 good fixtures coming up for Stoke and he was very good against Spurs.

The point about reconsidering options like Alexis if Kun is perma-captain is fantastic by the way.

I think one can find alot of success by leaving the armband on Kun, carefully pick one of Sanchez/Hazard/Silva and use the remaining cash wisely.

I see alot of WC teams trying to fit Sanchez Silva Aguero in and it just looks quite unbalanced. Team structure is completely shot.

OK, I'm in a resistant mood today so I hope you don't mind if I put some counter arguments. Nothing personal.

First thing is that this "wildcard template" may be no better than the one most people started the season with. 😕 What do we actually know after 2 weeks? I'll take your picks first, then some options you didn't mention.

      1. Your "wildcard template" front 8 includes Sanchez. He's no value at 11.0 as you said. So why is he in there if people will be captaining Aguero every week? Arsenal's fixture run is very mixed in any case and they haven't looked comfortable so far this season.
      2. Silva and Aguero (and/or Yaya) I can't disagree with - good form and City have a great fixture run upcoming. But Aguero doesn't have a good goals record against Everton and won't rise by more than 0.2 at worst this week, no rush there.
      3. Payet and Mahrez look good value and have good fixtures for a while. Wouldn't argue with them either. Incidentally my team already includes both.
      4. Gomis and Swansea have mixed fixtures. Does everyone know that Swansea started pre-season earlier than almost everyone else in order to get a jump? The effect of that relative to other teams will wear off over the next weeks.

So far I only want 4 of those and have 3 plus Ozil without wildcarding. Aguero I am perfectly happy to wait till GW4 for. Then I will have the 4 that I want.

      5. The additional options you mentioned are mostly guesswork. Giroud could suffer benching as Walcott has. Does anyone think they now know what Wenger will do? How will you feel when Giroud is benched for Walcott? Who will you call a troll then? Te Arsenal attack is a dangerous lottery and only Sanchez (over-priced) and Ozil are probably safe.
      6. Eriksen is a good option, I said that before the season started, and Spurs have decent fixtures. But if he is then Kane is too. A lot will be taking Kane out on wildcard. Will they regret it? I have him under suffrance because Costa and Lukaku were injury risks at the start of the season. But I am in no rush to remove him now I have him.
      7. Ayew - same situation as Gomis. Very debatable. Everyone can see the points he has already scored. Whether that continues (and how long for) is another matter. Swansea started very well last season too but levelled out after 3-4 games.
      8. Southampton haven't started the season well. But do we really know enough yet? I have Pelle and am not ready to make any decision about him, especially when Southampton have 3 nice fixtures upcoming.

OK, that's your options. Now some considerations of mine.

      9. The key thing is we don't know enough yet for a wildcard now to be much less of a punt than our original selection was. The transfer window is not yet closed. Especially this is important in the defense (which you didn't discuss).
      10. WBA for example. They have a kind fixture run from GW4 to GW11. Quite likely their defence will be valuable. But we don't know what the personnel will be yet. They may sign a GK. The back four is unsettled and there may be more signings there. In attack, Rondon may become an excellent option at 7.0 with those fixtures, especially if Berahino leaves.
      11. City have the great fixture run. But which defender do you want? The expensive Kompany who possibly already has his goals for the season? Mangala may be out on loan if Ottamendi comes in, he could be a good option and might even be 5.5. The fullbacks are rotation risks I think but I'd love to have Kolarov if it became apparent he was 1st choice. We don't know enough. We don't even know enough about the City attackers if De Bruyne arrives. Silva as #10 and Silva as a winger is a different thing.
      12. Bournemouth have a run of great fixtures till GW8. They were flavour of the month before the season began. Ritchie has already seen a price drop. Francis and Wilson may soon follow. For me these are attractive options. I don't mind Coates dropping to 4.4 if I can replace him with Francis at 4.4.
      13. Stoke and Sunderland also have kind fixture runs. Is it impossible that Sunderland's fortunes turn after 2 games? I'm happy to have and keep Lens until I know more. I'm interested to see how Shaquiri will look. I'm interested to see if Hughes settles with his current back 4 and whether Stoke can start keeping some clean sheets.

Now, everyone else (or most) may be so unsettled by a poor start and impending price changes (which will be less volatile than most think because so many wildcards are in play) that they feel compelled to wildcard. I don't. I don't know enough yet and I only get to use my wildcard once. I can manage a (slight) loss in TV if that's what it means. Not a problem.

If anything, my average start to the season causes me to hold off on my wildcard. I planned it for between GW4 and GW5. I still may go then but I'm now more inclined to play a long game and wait till GW13. I want to get a jump with it and I won't do that by using it now to get the same team as everyone in front of me. 😕

This week, next week some of the players the wildcarders are removing will score big. Then there will be more laments on here. There is almost no doubt of it.

For all their ooze, so far Aguero and Sanchez haven't scored big yet.

Having said that, I have an active wildcard, and I think you have to judge your picks on actual performances. Both Kun and Alexis look explosive and eager to score. It's hard to resist them even if Mane and Hazard have slightly better fixtures (GW3).

If player A looks better than player B - go with A and don't be too mathematic about it.

But I agree on one thing - the templatization of teams is a bad thing. Very few managers had any City players before the start, just because it wasn't the thing, and look where it got them.

Think most was prepared to start bringing City players in for their great run, and it made sense to wait given their tough opening fixtures. Can't predict everything, you will be surprised, and no one would foresee a 3-0 City win over Chelsea. But now that it happened it shows City are in great form and players should be brought in immediately rather than waiting for GW4.

Seemingly, if you look at first 3 gw's, Chelsea had the fixtures of same difficulty (WBA and City away), yet everyone jumped to get at least 2 of their players, and Community Shield warning sign hasn't influenced any of that.

Sometimes we overlook the obvious and set our minds too much on the collective decisions, even if they look doubtful: Depay, Walcott, Ritchie... we all knew from last season that Sunderland defence was crap, yet many (me including) picked Coates anyway! Why?! 🙂 Because collective "fantasy logic" told us so.

You do make som great points, and sure, I've been burnt before and will be burnt again by tunnel vision. Choosing Ivanovic from the off was always gonna be a bad idea, but he was the main reason I won a cup last year and I really do love him.

All 4.5 defs are crap IMO. And I'd have no problem holding Coates and keep rotating him if it wasn't for the mass selling. Now everyone jumps on Richards forgetting how crap Villa def with Sherwood was last term.

True about Villa. But since GW1 I saw that Whittaker has attacking potential, keen to play 1-2's into the box or simply make that final pass.

So for me, he's now the first 4.5 option. Simply because I actually saw him being good.

I knew Mahrez was good, I admired his performances last season, I knew he was nailed on under Ranieri and started playing in a more advanced/direct position, yet I ignored this obviousness and chose the hyped Ritchie, whom I never saw actually play, and reentering the first team football Sinclair instead.

I agree with most of your points Ruth, and I'd originally preferred to wait till GW4/5, but that 'slight loss in TV' was quite frankly about to become huge. For example you mention a Coates to Francis switch with both being 4.4. Well I owned both. Then add Ivanovic, Hazard, Walcott, Depay, Mane and Rooney to that mix and I'd possibly been looking at a drop in TV of about 0.6-0.7 with Agüero and City mids going in the complete opposite direction of my players price wise.

Yes, I understand the problem. I had Coates and Ivan and Rooney too (though Coates is now gone). Starting with FFS template selections is dangerous if they fail because people here tend to move as a mass.

For me I don't expect to lose more than 0.5 by not wildcarding and I'll live with that, I'll live with 1.0 if need be. I'll still have a TV around 105.00 by Xmas. But price shifts probably won't be as volatile as most think.

My view is jumping between strikers in the same price range.
Lets take Pelle 8, Lukaku 8, Gomis 7. I would consider them all strikers who can get red hot for a time and then have a period where they cant hit the goal from one meter away.
So my plan was to try to own the one who's hot and jump between.
Don't like any of them for a whole season though.

You will know by the time Evertons horrible run of fixtures are over

Was hoping to have atleast one starting 4.0 def by now but looks like there won't be any.

Worth having Oxford as a bench fodder who might get odd starts now and then or should I invest that 0.5 to have someone who plays?

Problem is that there isn't much 4.5 defs that I would want.

You will never know when Oxford gets the odd start though so for me he is a no go.
