Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 8

There were no new victims over the weekend, and no red cards either, but the Suspension Tightrope sleeps for no man, and, after a flurry of cards, it duly snapped up a glut of unwilling funambulists to head into Gameweek 8.

Villa’s Ciaran Clark, Sunderland centre-half Seb Coates and Leicester left-back Jeffrey Schlupp all survived the week unscathed, though the former pair’s causes were helped by the fact they were both unused subs for respective clashes with Liverpool and Man United.

That trio were joined by four new protagonists, who all picked up their fourth cautions of the season in the Gameweek 7 match ups.

The first couple were served up in an action-packed lunchtime clash at White Hart Lane, as Spurs overcame table toppers City with an energetic display that saw five of their front six players booked once they took the lead in the second-half. Goalscorer Eric Dier and his centre midfield partner Dele Alli took their tallies to four for the season for fouls on Fernandinho and Patrick Roberts respectively. Dier has already been drafted in by over 42,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers since the weekend, making him the fourth more sought-after player of the Gameweek.

Next to don the soft shoes and prepare for an acrobatic stint was Sunderland’s Billy Jones. The right-back is no stranger to these parts, with eight bookings in two of the last three seasons, and at least four cards in all of the last five years, despite his failure to secure a regular role at West Brom or Sunderland in that time. Jones scythed down Memphis Depay to earn himself a first taste of the ’15/16 Tightrope.

Finally, the seventh of the current crop of Tightrope walkers – and perhaps one of the most familiar faces of recent times – was Newcastle’s Jack Colback. The combative midfielder joined the party after a first-half booking picked up for a foul on Loic Remy. Fortunately for Jack, injury interrupted his second-half, so he’ll have to wait until at least next week to see if he can add to his growing collection of cards.

True fans of the Tightrope will be more than aware of Colback’s “previous”. Nurtured under the wing of Lee Cattermole at Sunderland, the ginger-haired battler learned quickly from his mentor, picking up a single card in his debut season, upgrading that to three bookings the next term, then five in ’12/13 and seven in his final season with Cattermole on Wearside. A switch to neighbours Newcastle saw Colback blossom into a full-scale disciplinary menace and, in ’14/15, he duly upped his output to 12 cautions – a total bettered only by former team-mate Cattermole (14) last time out. Four cards in just under 650 minutes this season is no surprise, and puts him high on the list of those expected to fall into a ban in his next outing.

Below those players, there are 16 faces currently sitting on three yellows. Branislav Ivanovic, Jose Fonte, Oriol Romeu, Jonjo Shelvey, Yohan Cabaye and Erik Lamela are the new names, having collected a third caution of the campaign over the last two days.

There are no newly-suspended players so far this week, with only tomorrow’s Hawthorns clash between West Brom and Everton remaining.

Arsenal’s Gabriel is available for selection again, having served a one-match ban in yesterday’s 5-2 win at Leicester. Three players still remain suspended for Gameweek 8. Diego Costa, Kevin Mirallas and Valon Behrami all serve the last of three-bans against Southampton, Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively.

Apologies, reposting due to an incorrect team link, which I have now resolved:

If YYT is out, I'm thinking Ayew > Sako to fund YYT > DeBruyne. Got Gomis up front anyway and got 2FT. Make sense?

Also, who would you bench after this out of Ighalo and Sako? I'm thinking bench Sako and play a 3-4-3

If Yaya is out ( should be fit in my opinion ), bench him, play Ayew and transfer out Gomez.

Can i also promote this! I have had to skip it this year due to time constraints but was great fun last year, love the draft format style.
Reminds me of playing Fantasy Football the old way when we would meet for an auction once a year and then send teams off to the Telegraph newspaper.

Will do. Was tempted this year as i love the auction so much but its not really on if i only look at every 2 weeks or so after that. Better to let someone else enjoy the vacant spot more fully.

  4. Time To Sell Alexis 'Hat Trick' Sanchez?
    Enzo the Baker
    • 10 Years

    Time to sell Alexis ?

A brief discussion on Sanchez last page got me thinking : We've all seen Sanchez's attacking stats leading up to the last game, and an explosion was imminent. The thinking was that Leicester at home would attack and that would open up space for Alexis - which ended up happening and many of us banked 20 points or more.

I'd like to make a case that its now time to take our Sanchez points and run. Here's why:

Arsenal's next 6 fixtures are : MUN wat EVE swa TOT wba

If you sort teams by least goals conceded this season the top 5 teams are... you guessed it : Spurs, Mun, Eve, Wba, Wat.

(If I'm giving away Members stats then you can also sort by Goals Against here : http://www.soccerstats.com/latest.asp?league=england)

    Some more thoughts:
MUN : solid at the back under LvG, good record against Arsenal
wat : will sit deep, and play on the counter. No space like Lei gave away
EVE : 3 CS in 3 Away games so far
swa : Solid especially at home, know how to shut down arsenal like they showed most recently in May 1-0 at emirates
TOT : Second best defense in goals conceded this season
    wba : Tony Pulis.

Also, Alexis goals last season were against :
lei, MCI*, HUL, sun(2), BUR(2), swa*, SOT*, QPR, STO(2), qpr, LIV*, hul(2),

Out of his 16 goals, only 4 (starred) were against top half opposition, and in no game against top half did he score a brace or more.

If Kun gets injured, I don't see myself captaining Alexis in the next 6 games, but I would captain a premium Sanchez replacement like Hazard or De Bruyne/ (Silva?).

TL;DR I think its a good time to move Sanchez -> Chelsea or Man City premium mid

I see your point, and if he blanked this weekend, then it would have been a tempting move.

But his stats were always good, throughout his drought, and do you really want to sell one of the few big hitters who has actually started to fire?!

Sorry Enzo, this is clutching - lost interest after the first line but decided to give you benefit of the doubt and read on.

The fact that he's capable of braces is reason enough to keep him. He could easily get big scores against any of those teams you've listed and he is one of Arsenal's main goal scorers. What other alternatives do we have? Chelsea are rubbish, City have goals spread across the entire team.

Imagine if such thinking swayed you away from Sanchez this current GW in the first place...

      1. Enzo the Baker

Cheers Shifty, glad you gave it a read.

I genuinely think Hazard is looking deadly over the last two games, and De Bruyne seems worth the outlay. I need to choose between Alexis, Hazard and KdB for 2 out of 3 premium spots in mid (to go with Payet and Mahrez) - and I think its time for Sanchez to go.

        1. Shifty
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 8 months ago

Alexis KDB easily. Hazard is just not worth the outlay at the moment.

I think with the Arsenal style of play, goals are guaranteed. With Chelsea's shocking defensive form at the moment though, they will be looking over the next few games to really focus on defence imo.

This post is very relevant if we have the luxury of spending every FT on Sanchez in/out depending on the opposition.

However, we don't. Perhaps a better comparison would also be to look at how Hazard fared against his upcoming opponents in previous seasons? If it really favours Hazard...then there's a decision that has to be made.

Okay then here we go. Chelsea's next 6 fixtures are : SOT AVL whm LIV sto NOR

          Last season :
          SOT : 0
          AVL : 0
          whm : 1 goal
          LIV : 0
          sto : 1 assist
          NOR : no data

Looks a pretty poor case for Hazard. (However, he did score in the reverse fixtures against Sot, Avl and West ham if it counts for anything...)

I still do believe he is more likely to be involved in Chelsea's goals than Alexis in Arsenal's, and on penalties, captaincy material and better fixtures.

It's an interesting read and perhaps if you have no other pressing issues anywhere else then Sanchez -> Haz/KDB could be a good short term move.

I'm an extremely biased Arsenal fan though so lalalalalalala

True, my other pressing issues are Yaya, Depay and Gomis but the Sanchez -> Haz switch is top of my list I think

Hmmm, even after taking my Arsenal cap off, with those three issues I would not be using a transfer on Sanchez.

If Yaya is out then Yaya -> KDB if you can afford, Wally if not
If Yaya fit then Depay -> KDB if you can afford, Wally if not

            For me

Cheers Jins. Yep, both of your suggestions sound like good options but both require -4 for me which I really don't mind currently, haven't taken a hit for a while. Yaya -> KdB especially might pay off very soon.

I'm also considering Yaya to Pedro to get some Chelsea insurance ( oops almost said 'coverage' there :P)

Am grateful for Sanchez ofcourse, gave me a 300k rise inspite of a forced -8! I think you've got a very good point about selling him though, esp if you wont captain him anytime soon.

In your team, I'd probably sort out Yaya/Gomis/Depay first and get some profit out of Sanchez in the meantime.

Rule no.1 of fpl. You don't ditch one of the best players in the league the week after he scores a hat trick. He is going to tear Danny Blind a new one.

I argued the same yesterday and they I was laughed at. His hattrick was mainly because Leceister were stupid and arrogant thinking they can go all out attack on Arsenal more than Alexis being brilliant.

I would think that's a bit OTT to call Leicester arrogant (reminds me of Gary Neville talking about Wenger being either naive or arrogant). Lei have been very very good this season and they decided to stick to the philosophy that worked for them : if that Vardy header had gone in off the post we might be telling a different tale today.

But yeah I agree the 'Sanchez sale' is going to be a difficult case to make and we're both getting laughed at 😛

Very brave post. You make a good point imo, but like most i need to use my FT on Wilson. Only expensive midfielder i would want in my team is KDB, and not sure i would want him when Silva is back.
Ignore the one sentence nay sayers. Everyone was considering selling him two days ago despite his good stats for a Chelsea mid. but then they didn't get no deflection so no deal.

You make some good points but the guy has just scored a hat trick and plays for one of the best teams in the league, I'd be confident of further returns albeit not as big.

If anyone is in just a luxury position they can consider Sanchez out after a hat trick with one of their FTs then I'm really jealous! 🙂

If you were talking about, say, big chances or shots in box conceded then you might be, but goals conceded can easily be found from the Goals Against column of any expanded League table.

I see your point. But Alexis is one of the few big hitters in the league who just started to score goals & he'll definitely be hungry to score more despite the fixture since he is a fixture proof player. He proved that in his time with Barcelona, Udinese & his national team. Who remembers that wonder goal against Real Madrid? Yes he scored against weak teams last season but I can't see this season to be just like the last one. I can see him scoring more goals & getting more assists! I'm always patient with the big hitters like Sanchez, Kun, Hazard... Because I know after their blanks they'll explode in one GW and give you 15+ points!

Fair enough, I haven't followed Sanchez's career carefully before he moved to Arsenal, but last season's data suggests that in the PL, he's something of a flat track bully. Maybe the new post-Coquelin Arsenal will help him score more in the big games

this is exactly what i was thinking.

there was a point made by Ruth NZ a little while back about Sanchez's hauls last season coming when he was playing upfront when Giroud and Welbeck were injured.

the question now is whether Sanchez can rise again before KDB, so i can make some profit

Yes I remember Ruth_NZ making the point on Alexis in the second half of last season, that genuinely worked out well for the most part (except the away game at Hull).

I'm in the same boat as you, waiting for the 0.1 rise on Sanchez by friday (but for Haz instead of KdB i think)

I don't think it's a bad idea actually but I already have KDB and Chelsea haven't really kicked on as I expected them to after beating Arsenal. There's no real reason to get rid. May as well make some money if nothing else.

    5024 transfers out

Havent really got a point here but hope this kind people getting him push up that .1. Sadly that could really make a difference to me.

Why should that make any difference? The fact he has Chelsea away would put me off this week, from next week he has LEI, liv, BOU, sun, STO which is a lot better. That said, Chelsea aren't exactly great at the back at the moment

I doubt he will play in Senegal's match on Friday though, if you look at Senegal's fixtures in that same competition they have another game the following week even though it's not an international break then.

Did you read my comment or not?

I doubt the Senegalese EPL players will play their match on Friday for obvious reasons. Added to the fact that the particular competition seems an odd one since it is played even when there isn't an international break.

It's likely that Mane will play the Wednesday game then fly back

    A) Walcott (MUN, wat), Sako (WHU, lei) & Sinclair (STO)
    B) Vardy (nor, sot) & Mane (che, LEI) & Pelle (liv)

    A) 13 + 9 + 6
    B) 9 + 9 + 6

Nor, Che, Lei, Liv are the teams with worst defence, aren't they?
while MUN, Wat are solid, WHU have not conceded any goal at aways games yet. Sako and SInclair are not nailed on.
I think Vardy + Mane can outscore A, let alone Pelle

Fair points. I guess I'm looking at alternatives the popular Wilson -> Vardy move.

Any better striker options for the next 2 weeks only?

Whilst Vardy and LEI look very attacking I'm not completely sold on (nor, sot)

He nearly had 4 V Arse (hit post twice) he's the most consistent striker in the league right now and close on fixture proof.

Yeah, I agree he looks superb this year. I'm most probably getting him, just exploring other options before pressing the button.

You fancy him to outscore Sakho/Rondon/Berahino over the next 2?

It's tight over two games, very hard to call that.
Wham on the road twice too (Leicester as well)
WBA fixtures seem better but they don't fill me with hope goals wise.
Vardy (form) edges it for me.

Was looking at these same options earlier. I'd say:

              Fixtures: Wba>Whu>Lei
              Chances created: Lei>Whu>Wba
              Accuracy: Rondon>Vardy>Sakho
              Value/Price changes: Vardy>Sakho>Rondon

I went with Vardy, coz I'd like to do Mahrez->Payet/Barkley in 2-3 weeks. (Not very logical I admit)

Does depend on how Rondon plays today though...

bookie odds also take into consideration popularity of best though...

for example if Team A plays Team B and true odds are both 1.7 and 1.7 (hypothetically)

But wince Team A has a much bigger fanbase they need to rework so they dont get screwed when everyone bets on Team A

Meaning... it would look like this Team A 1.4 Team B 1.8

Bookies dont try to take a side and make money, they work it out so any outcome will be profitable

I watched back the Leicester v Arsenal game again, boy was Vardy impressive-his pace and strength was unreal, he hit the bar twice - could so easily had 4goals.
Glad I got him tbh I can't see anything but a great relationship between us!

yeah. ridiculous. I feel like I should have deserved more from owning a hattrick scorer from midfield.

Then I look at my ML rivals and plenty have Vardy, Mane, Pelle, Mata. One guy even has Lamela.

My mini league leader played his bench boost with Cech, Mert, Komp and Mane, grand total 37 points. And hes still freaking above me!

I hope we have a 1-1 draw with a Myhilinho OG assisted by Dawson and a Lukaku OG

Brought in Jerome for Wilson. Must have raised a few eyebrows but I only need a playing striker in my 3-5-2 team to play in turns with Ighalo. Besides he is Norwich's main striker, with good fixtures..

Rate my team for the next GW.

    Butland

    Sagna, Kolarov, Richards

    Mahrez, Ayew, Sanchez, Hazard, Payet

    Aguero (c), Jerome

    ---

    McCarthy, Ighalo, Cedric, Gomez

Obviously needing to sort out the bench but not willing to take any hit... OR SHOULD I?

    Thanks in advance.

Looks fine. Murray would have tempted me as a cheap Wilson replacement but this season, much like John Snow, i know nothin.

No hits needed there. Gomez next out of course.

Thanks mate. Seriously considered Murray but Jerome (LEI, New, WBA) is a short-term punt only to be replaced by a decent striker perhaps Benteke when fit/ Martial when fixtures turn..

Gomez > Dawson will be next

Pappis Cisse expected to return 23rd of September on the fpl site? Any idea what's going on with him?

Don't think McClaren likes him. Blasted him for his performance against West Ham the other week. Mitrovic easily first choice, wouldn't be surprised to see Cisse leave in the near future

I was actually wondering about Cisse more so due to Ayoze. If Ayoze was nailed playing up top with Mitrovic in a 442 he would be my Wilson replacement. Only have 5.6to spend
