This Much We Know – Gameweek 10

Harry Kane returns to form in resounding fashion as Spurs take advantage of Bournemouth’s defensive frailties. Mesut Ozil strengthens his case for inclusion as Arsene Wenger rotates up top again, Odion Ighalo continues to bring home the points, whilst Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher throws his hat into the ring as a budget alternative for our three-man frontlines. Here’s the lessons learned from this weekend’s action….

Kane has made a statement…
The Tottenham forward threw his hat in the ring as a contender for our three-man frontlines by racking up a hat-trick against Bournemouth’s leaky backline. Just like Alexis Sanchez, Kane finally backed up his underlying numbers after a frustrating first few months and with his confidence on the up, he now welcomes managerless Villa to the Lane. Granted, he has Arsenal, West Ham and Chelsea to follow but as we’ve seen last season, a Kane is fixture-proof when firing on all cylinders.

Rotation leaves the door open for Ozil…
Olivier Giroud was finally rewarded for his displays off the bench last Saturday as Theo Walcott’s run of six successive league starts came to an end. The Frenchman’s opener against Everton – his fourth in the last six Gameweeks, despite limited pitch time – vindicated his manager’s decision and with the Gunners level on points at the summit, Arsene Wenger’s rotation up top is clearly paying off. Mesut Ozil showed just why he’s becoming increasingly popular amongst Fantasy managers with a seventh assist of the season against the Toffees and with Walcott’s minutes once again a concern, the German’s security of starts will surely turn a few more heads.

Ighalo is the five-man midfield enabler…
The Watford budget frontman just keeps on delivering. Ighalo provided assists for both the Hornets’ goals in a surprise 2-0 win at Stoke as Quique Sanchez Flores’ side brought their hosts’ three-match winning streak to an end. Ighalo has played a part in 100% of Watford’s goals when on the pitch and has now risen to third in the FPL forward standings – at just 5.3, his acquisition looks a no-brainer for those determined to free up funds to splash the cash in midfield.

Big Sam needs to keep Fletcher fit…
It’s two goals and an assist from the Scot in the last three Gameweeks now as Sunderland’s fight for survival starts to finally pick up pace. Fletcher’s notorious fragility has limited his minutes in recent seasons but, as evidenced by his record between 2010/11 and 2012/13, where he served up double-figure goal hauls in three successive seasons, he’s more than capable of producing. If Sam Allardyce is to steer his new side to safety, the Wearsiders need to somehow keep Fletcher out of the treatment room.

Carroll could yet be a factor…
Emerging from the bench to grab a late winner at home to Chelsea, the Hammers frontman is edging ever-closer to a first start under Slaven Bilic. West Ham’s superb start to the season has seen them score 22 times – second only to City – yet first-choice forward Diafra Sakho has played a part in just four of those strikes, courtesy of three goals and an assist. Carroll already has a goal and assist in just 83 minutes off the bench but as he builds up his match sharpness following months on the sidelines, it surely won’t be too long before he’s handed a first XI opportunity.

Schlupp and Simpson are becoming Foxes options…
Leicester’s 5-2 home loss to Arsenal in Gameweek 7 has clearly had an impact on their defensive set-up. Since then, Claudio Ranieri has started Danny Simpson at right-back in each of the last three league matches and, at a price of 3.9, he offers us the cheapest starting defender in the FPL game. Meanwhile, the installation of Christian Fuchs on the opposite side of defence has allowed Jeffrey Schlupp an out of position berth on the left of midfield. One clean sheet in ten is hardly worthy investing in for their defensive potential alone but Simpson and Schlupp’s appeal is clearly on the rise.

The Cherries are the new whipping boys…
It’s five goals against in each of the last two Gameweeks as life in the top-flight suddenly gets grim for the Championship winners. With his side decimated by injuries to the likes of Callum Wilson, Max Gradel and Tommy Elphick, Eddie Howe is struggling to strike a balance as Bournemouth slip precariously nearer to the bottom three. A weekend trip to Southampton hands Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle the chance to wreak havoc and with Swansea, Everton, Chelsea and United also in the next six, Howe has a task on his hands to keep his side out of the drop zone.

The Capital One Cup has its uses….
As many as nine players are facing one-match bans this week after an eventful round of fixtures. Luckily for all but two of those players (Newcastle pair Jack Colback and Fabricio Coloccini), those suspensions will be served in the midweek cup clashes – not only will the likes of Sadio Mane be available for the home clash with Bournemouth on Sunday, he’s be free to put his feet up in midweek when Southampton host Villa at St Mary’s. For as much as the extra schedule can wreak havoc with rest and rotation, sometimes the domestic cups can bail out our players and serve as a buffer for those pesky cards accumulated during league action.

Milner could kick on under Klopp….
The summer signing from City seems to have adapted immediately to Jurgen Klopp’s “Gegenpressing” tactic. Whilst Philippe Coutinho struggled to spark his side into life, Milner created five chances against Southampton and bagged an assist for Christian Benteke’s opener – he’s now served up points in three of the last four and is the Reds’ joint-top scorer in FPL. Milner’s dynamic displays look tailor-made for Klopp’s approach and his early performances suggest he’ll be one of the main beneficiaries of the post-Brendan Rodgers era.

Jagielka’s absence could force a Toffees reassessment…
The Everton centre-half was ruled out for around eight weeks earlier today after sustaining a knee injury in the weekend loss at Arsenal. The Jagielka news comes at a time when Roberto Martinez’ men are set to embark on a superb run of fixtures, with new boy Ramiro Funes Mori set to fill the space vacated alongside John Stones. Given that Jagielka sits amongst the top three defenders for CBI (Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions) this season, though, it remains to be seen just how much his loss will diminish their defensive appeal.

Think I've narrowed it down to Bony vs Lukaku for my Costa replacement.

Think Kane 'got lucky' vs injury ravaged Bournemouth.

    Team is:

    Butland
    Kolarov Vertonghen Huth
    Ozil Mahrez KdB (c) Mane
    Kane Lukaku Martial

    4.0 / Morrison Naughton 4.0

What should I do of these:
    A) DDG for Butland - crazy fixtures!
    B) VVD for Huth / 4.0
    C) Coleman for Huth / 4.0
    D) Big Bony in for Martial

My reasoning for not gettin VVD

In my situation I'm rotating defenders, for players like VVD and Cresswell who rely mainly on attacking returns, I think these players aren't as good if you are rotating as their attacking returns are so unpredictable and unless you are going to play them every week then your relying on luck a lot. It's just too unpredictable for my liking..

    Thoughts?

Im considering him and then would play him 5 of next 6(bench vs ManCity). No need to rotate him with so good fixtures.
But also like to get ManU defender but Smalling expensive, can we trust other nailed and fit(Rojo, Jones?)

      1. JamieLfc
        • 8 Years
        8 years, 7 months ago

Let's be honest, Southamptons defence probably isn't worth investing 5.5m into unless your going to get attacking returns, considering VVD will probably have 5 goals by the end of the season there is quite a low probability of him getting more than 1 goal in 6 games in which you bench for 1 of those...

    Hi guys,

First post of FFS, hopefully not my last. Need your help with three decisions for GW11. I have already done my FT for this week (Fabianski to de Gea).

    This my current line-up:

    de Gea (cpl)
Kolarov (NOR) Monreal (swa) Azpilicueta (LIV)
Mahrez (wba) Payet (wat) Sanchez (swa) KDB (NOR) Mané (BOU)
    Lukaku (SUN) Vardy (wba)

Bench : McCarthy (MUN), Ighalo (WHU), Sagna (NOR), Targett (BOU)

    1. Should I play Sagna instead of Azpilicueta? For the time being Pellegrini seems to prefer Sagna over Zabaleta and he is in good form. I also think that Man City is more likely to get a CS at home against a Norwich side without Mbokani than Chelsea against Liverpool. Or do you it is too risky to double up on Man City defence?

    2. Should I give a starting spot to Ighalo against a leaky West Ham over one of the Leicester boys? And who should I drop, Mahrez or Vardy?

    3. Who should I pick as my captain? KDB, Sanchez, Lukaku, Mané, Payet all look like decent captaincy options. My head says KDB since I am top of my mini-league and most of the others have him and are captaining him constantly (we’re Belgians), but my guts says Mané. I think will do pretty good against Bournemouth while no one in my mini-league has him (yet).

      1. Definitely start Sagna
      2. Watford have only scored 1 goal at home all season so benching Ighalo makes sense. I'd probably bench Mahrez ahead of Vardy if you didn't want to double up on Leicester.
      3. I'd go for Mane if he is a good differential in your mini-league.

      Hey man 🙂

      1) Sagna against Norwich is sweet. Big pay off could be in the works. I'd double up - no need for the "coverage", and if there was ever a game to double up on City players and hope for the 12+ clean sheet this is it

      2) Tough one. Pulis' teams tough to break down, but you have Payet in your team equally. Mahrez+Vardy are combining well and are productive. Think you've just about got the right mix there mate

      3) Ohh I like your thinking with Mane (I have him too). Depends how far you are ahead but the trick to leading MLs is ensuring you choose the obvious option! It's not your job to take risks if you're in the lead. KdB.

        Thanks for all the replies!

I like that strategic thinking... However, in the match against ManU KDB seemed a bit tired from the mid-week game. He is not yet used to the high game rate of English football. Mané on the other hand will be very fresh and eager due to his red card... I'll make a decision after his minutes and performance in City's capital one cup game!

My game week was horrific this week. 32 points 🙁 Still in pain from it.

Next week the team looks pretty tasty fixture wise though - what do you lot think?

    Butland
    VVD, Kolarov, Bellerin
    Sanchez, KDB (C), Mahrez, Payet
    Vardy Pelle Martial

I was thinking Lukaku but it'd be for -4 hit. Lukaku's fixtures do look good for weeks though.

      So this is my team:

      Butland, Gomes

      Azpilicueta, Cedric, Francis, Bellerin, Dawson

Mata, Mahrez, Payet, Sanchez, de Bruyne

      Vardy, Pelle, Ighalo

Thinking of keeping it as it is this week since I've been taking a lot of hits lately and my team doesn't look too bad. But I'm tempted to take a hit to bring in Smalling and Barkley for Francis/Azpi and Mata. If I don't make any transfers, I'm going to bench Gomes, Mata, Francis and Dawson with the hope that Leicester manage to score a few goals away against West Brom like they did in their last encounter at the Hawthornes, and that Chelsea will keep a clean sheet since Mourinho likes playing defensively in the big games and this could be a decisive game for him and Liverpool aren't scoring many goals.

So basically, should I make transfers to get defensive coverage from United and bring in Barkley since he plays Sunderland at home, or just leave things as is and hope for the best, and then have the opportunity to make 2 FT the next week?

Different crowd so I'd like to gauge a few more opinions please.

      Pelle, Vardy, Ighalo

      Subs: McCarthy, Mahrez, Prodl, Richards

Its all about who you want to Cpt imo

Getting DDG limits your options to get Aguero back, Smalling too

Igloo to Lukaku or Kane and Cpt gives the most upside ?

Good team - MAYBE VVD? But I don't really see any need for a transfer.

Possible - to maybe upgrade Ighalo to Kane (2 good fixtures upcoming - I am feeling especially smug as I captained him this weekend)

B with your defender of choice. VvD seems like a Smalling type, but may not get as many clean sheets given the scores we have seen from Soton. Nonetheless, that would be my vote. We have similar teams (same front line; 3 of 5 same mids).

posted this yesterday but sort of got lost in amongst the post GW fuss, but I thought people might appreciate it

some thoughts for those looking at United players from now

DDG - will be a good option as we look uber solid but it depends on who you plan to sell

Jones - looking like 3 BAPs for today, but is well known for being injury prone and he didn't go forward at set pieces at all today so perhaps the goal threat is limited

      Darmian - avoid

Rojo - could be worth a shout, LvG praised him today, may well now be ahead of Blind but slight risk

Smalling - the priciest but the best option IMO. The only nailed on starter, usually the man for BAPs and provides attacking threat. Could easily have had a goal and/or assist today

Herrera - avoid IMO. Looks a good option, but you'll never be 100% sure he's starting

Mata - I have gone off him, subbed off early again and was poor, Herrera took a lot of set pieces of him and Lingard did well when he came on

Martial - the only realistic option in our attack atm. still did ok out wide but he'll be limited out there. I still don't think he's worth it despite our fixtures for the simple reason that we just don't shoot a lot. Playing centrally he's an option but it's hard to justify him over Lukaku, Vardy, Pelle or Bony

I agree. Probably sell Martial then he'll score a hatty.

Can't see him scoring a hat-trick until 12-19th of December when United face Bournemouth and Norwich.

        Good work

I doubt LVG will use Blind at left back but the only player I'd consider is Smalling

I'm scared of getting rid of Martial! I want Bony BUT I don't have any United "cover" if I remove him.

Do you reckon LvG will relent on Rooney's position?

You're scared about getting rid of Martial but not scared about being one of very few managers not to own Vardy?

Really, you're ditching the most prolific striker in the game with the best underlying stats (see http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/11658258)?

That's one hell of a punt, good luck!

Who will your third striker be?

So basically De Gea or Smalling.

I don't know if I can bring myself to get Smalling at 6.4m. May have to hope Jones can stay fit. Who's more nailed between Jones and Rojo?

United aren't an 'explosive' enough team to deserve the term 'cover' imo

I'd add to this that only Sunderland have taken less shots than us, which makes Martial hard to justify over the likes of Pelle, Lukaku, Bony, Vardy

I'm looking for a bit of advice on what to do with a spare transfer this week. My squad is

      Schmeichel, Gomes
      Kolarov, VVD, Janmaat, Francis, Martin
      Sanchez, KDB, Payet, Mahrez, Westwood
      Pelle, Vardy, Lukaku

      Options:
      1. Get a non terrible keeper (DDG?), but Schmeichel and Gomes actually have some pretty nice fixtures coming up and might be on for a clean sheet or two
      2. Get rid of Kolarov (Coleman?) before the Clichy-tation kicks in, but seems a bit risky given his next two fixtures
      3. Take a gamble and switch Mahrez for Mane or Ozil
      4. Give myself a benching headache and switch Westwood for Mane or Ozil
      5. Be irrecoverably dull and keep the transfer

Still have my WC intact, so no worries about leaving money in the bank for Aguero etc.

Seriously tempted by Mane at the moment, but would be interested to hear what others think.

Wouldn't be too worried about Kolarov. There are no report on Clichy back in training yet and he will need additional time to rebuild his match fitness (like Zabaletta). Moreover, City just managed a clean sheet away to United so no way Pelegrini is going to make changes to his defence.

Leicester's last couple of games were against strong attacking teams. De Laet has attackingly done very well early in the season, before Ranieri desperately wanted a clean sheet. Wouldn't be too surprised if he resurges against defensive blocks like West Brom and Watford.

      d) Keep and roll the transfer...

Lukaku has great fixtures and I got him for that reason. But his goals have been lucky and due to defensive mistakes. Bony is great short-term and Kane, not so sure about him.

Slightly assuring to see quite a few here have gotten Van Dijk, just like me. Hope it pays off and he gets a goal or two soon.
