Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 11

The Suspension Tightrope claimed a new victim this week as United’s Matteo Darmian earned his fifth yellow card of the campaign in yesterday’s goalless draw at Selhurst Park. Owned by 18% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, the Italian now misses the home clash against West Brom and with Antonio Valencia still injured, Louis van Gaal has decisions to make at right back.

The Tightrope welcomed four new faces over the weekend, with 14 players now standing just one caution away from a single-match ban. Palace playmaker Yohan Cabaye, Swansea skipper Ashley Williams, Watford’s raiding right-back Allan Nyom and Liverpool midfielder Lucas are the latest recruits. The latter was perhaps a little fortunate not to earn a second yellow in the 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge after a foul on Ramires resulted in no more than a warning and proved a major post-match talking point.

Whilst Jose Mourinho was reluctant to comment for fear of FA disciplinary measures, Lucas, unsurprisingly, commended whistler Marc Clattenburg’s decision not to send him packing:

”They [Chelsea] will probably talk about it, it’s normal especially when you lose a game. The first three fouls in the first 10 minutes of the game probably were just fouls that maybe wouldn’t be a yellow card. Sometimes in my position you make fouls but more to stop the game and I think it was a good decision from the referee. He controlled the game very well, all the situations with the Chelsea players I think he dealt with it really well and I think it was a fair game.”

In terms of other new suspensions, Norwich will be without skipper Russell Martin for the Gameweek 12 home encounter against Swansea. The versatile defender was dismissed at City for denying a goal scoring opportunity – his handball in the box handed the hosts their first penalty.

Southampton will be devoid of Victor Wanyama’s services for next weekend’s trip to Sunderland. The Kenyan international avoided climbing onto the Tightrope after he was dismissed for collecting two bookings in this afternoon’s home win over Bournemouth – instead, he remains on three yellows and has been handed a one-match ban, thus returning in time for the Gameweek 13 clash against Stoke.

West Ham’s James Collins is set for a three-match ban after being dismissed for violent conduct during yesterday’s surprise loss to Watford as Slaven Bilic’s side lost for the first time on their travels this term.

After qualifying for the Europa League due to their fair play record, the Hammers have now received four red cards in the first 11 Gameweeks under their new manager, with Mark Noble (rescinded), Carl Jenkinson and Adrian the other parties concerned.

Bizarrely, this was the eighth red in just 11 Premier League matches involving West Ham. There has now been a sending off in each of their last four league outings, with Sunderland’s Jeremain Lens, Palace’s Dwight Gayle and Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic all seeing red in the three fixtures prior to yesterday’s trip to Vicarage Road. Taking all competitions into account, there has been 12 red cards flashed over West Ham’s 18 fixtures with Bilic at the helm – the London club have been culpable on seven of those occasions.

Finally, reports this evening suggest Diego Costa could be set to escape retrospective action following another spat with nemesis Martin Skrtel. The Chelsea striker appeared to dig a boot into the Slovakian’s chest after both fell to the ground during the Reds’ 3-1 win but it’s believed that referee Clattenburg saw the incident and decided to take no further action.

Given that Costa has already served a three-match ban this season, this will be a huge relief for the under-fire Jose Mourinho if confirmed. Taking his previous ban into account, another stint on the sidelines for violent conduct would have earned Costa a four-match suspension this time around and forced him out of the upcoming league matches against Stoke, Norwich, Spurs and Bournemouth.

Ultimate FPL.... I have Kane & Eriksen... Rival has Kane & Lloris. He will be Kane (c). I am 8 pts ahead but have (c) Pelle. Do I stick or twist. Was thinking changing to (c) Eriksen. If I change from Pelle, we'll be on the same points going into tonight. Thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm still not certain on moreno, a but like pva he is great going forward but terrible defensively so I wouldn't be surprised if he was dropped suddenly. That said he is first choice now and if liverpool can cover him defensively then maybe he can hold his spot in which case he is a good option.

Yeah I'm not saying he is under threat from another fb but both miner and can have plaued in fb in the past as has Ibe (I think with Ibe anyway).

The point is he is so poor BR felt he had to play a cb/rb kid in his place at the start of the season when they had no obvious replacement for him and I want to see if klopp comes to this realisation too before I make a decision on him.

Ibe has played wingback, not fullback.

Playing him at fullback would be a disaster, he is not a defender and would be more focussed on bursting up the wing

Fair enough, although Rodgers is an idiot. Can isn't a CB, never mind a RB. Milner perhaps, but I see that as a real last resort thing. Same with Connor Randall.

Ibe has played WB before, but he's not a defender at all.

AFAIK can had played most of his football at lb before he came to Liverpool but I could be wrong (not on a computer so can't check)

Henderson and milner would both be options at rb and would leave liverpool looking much more solid looking defensively.

I'm not saying any of this will happen but as with pva these players may be good attacking but are such liabilities defending not many teams can afford to play them.

I doubt Klopp would play a slow CB such as Sakho at LB. He loves attacking, fast fullbacks.

If Clyne played LB, then who would play RB?

I wil win £140 is these things don't happen

    Dier scores less than 12
Kane (c) and eriksen score less than 27

Kane, eriksen could happen if villa take a hammering. Anyone with more betting knowledge than me know how best to cover this? Or just ride it out and hope for the best?

Sorry, i'd like to answer but i've become quite confused by the 'don't happen' and 'less than' scenarios. You mean if Dier scores 12 or more and if Kane (c) and Eriksen score 27 or more?

        1. Black Knights

You'll be able to do Kane and Eriksen both to score, which i've just checked and is a disappointing 7/2.

It's similar prices for Kane (7/2) and Eriksen (9/2) to score in a Spurs win to nil.

Haha that is fantastic. It does throw up an interesting bit of proof for the age old is it better to spend money up front or at the back. Maybe the heavy hitter defence is the way to go. It also shows you can get by without Mahrez or Vardy!

Early thoughts about this week captaincy? Looks really tough to me.

Sanchez - could be tight game. Stats have been pretty poor in last two games for his standards.

Pelle - Sunderland defence is a joke but Pelle's away form isn't convinging.

KDB - my choice atm. Only 1 blank but will Villa tighten up with new manager?

Mahrez & Vardy - Good options aswell. Free scoring pretty much against everyone in pl. Watford have been relatively tight away.

Lukaku - will probably troll as once again.

Lukaku always scores against West Ham! Also considering mane, he could've easily scored a couple yesterday

Agreed. Mane worth considering as well.

Lukaku might score but I'm not expecting double digits in WH away.

It's tempting to bring in a crap midfielder just to avoid the benching headache every week.

      This!
      I always have a bench fodder - he's there so I don't have a headache every week.
I tend to always opt 343, so why add to the selection dilemma every week

It gives you more options and the potential to bench players you think could blank due to fixture/form.

It provides a decent backup in case of injury/knock/suspension/rotated by manager

You don't miss out on not owning a hot player who is scoring points and rising in price

You won't lose value on them unlike Wanyama and co.

Agreed to back up - but ideally do you really want someone on the bench who can score well every week? Always doubting yourself if you've made the right decision.

The more options is a shout, but you can only every play 11 and will kick yourself when you get it wrong, I try with a fodder that I know will play every week as a minimum, anything more is just a bonus.

Good point. As Santa points out above KDB downgrade could be an option, although ideally sanchez, ozil and kdb would be the way forward. That means losing players who are good value like mane, payet, mahrez.
