Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Aguero Plays Down Injury Fears

Sergio Aguero dismisses worries over his foot problem. Reports build of a period on the sidelines for Alexis Sanchez, Philippe Coutinho returns to full training, whilst Everton have growing concerns in the centre of the park.

Aguero Allays Injury Concerns

After earlier reports had suggested that Sergio Aguero’s foot injury was worst than first feared, Manchester City’s leading marksman took to social media to kindly clear up the situation himself. Aguero revealed via Twitter that he’s merely contending with a bruised heel after being subbed off against Southampton on Saturday:

“For everyone asking, I’m fine. It’s just a harmless bump on the heel. Thanks, all of you, for the support!”

The Scout Says: Aguero’s reassuring words will be music to the ears of 150,000 managers that recruited him ahead of last weekend’s deadline. The ex-Atletico Madrid striker netted on his return from the treatment room against Liverpool but failed to impose himself at home to Southampton, managing two attempts (one on target) and four penalty-box touches. Next on the agenda for Manuel Pellegrini’s charges is a road tie against a Stoke City outfit that carded five clean sheets in their previous seven outings. Moreover, no team has conceded fewer big chances on home turf (four) than the Potters this campaign, ensuring that Aguero will need quality service to outfox the in-form Jack Butland. On that note, David Silva’s expected return to the starting line-up would serve as a major boost on the creative front, given that he boasts six assists across five league starts.

Sanchez Injury Fears Growing

Unconfirmed reports from The Mirror suggest that Alexis Sanchez has suffered a hamstring pull which looks set to sideline him for around three weeks. Santi Cazorla could also be ruled out of their Champions League match-up against Olympiacos on December 9, as the Gunners await further news on the extent of his knee injury, though Laurent Koscielny’s hip problem is believed to be a minor complaint.

The Scout Says: Whilst we await official confirmation from Arsene Wenger, the growing concerns around Sanchez’ availability have already seen over 120,000 FPL managers part company with the Gunners midfielder. Sanchez’ form – one assist in five – allied with Mesut Ozil’s displays (two goals and nine assists in eight) have persuaded many to snap up the German, who subsequently sits in over 35% of sides. Given that there are six Gameweeks between December 5 and January 2, the packed festive schedule ensures we cannot afford to carry passengers, with strong benches a necessity due to winter rotation. Sanchez still sits in over 32% of FPL teams but if he’s ruled out over the next few weeks, the exodus will pick up pace as we look to restructure our squads to cope with his absence.

Coutinho Back in Training

Liverpool confirmed that Philippe Coutinho returned to first-team training yesterday, as he steps up his recovery ahead of their League Cup clash against Southampton on Wednesday.

The Scout Says: As reported yesterday, Jurgen Klopp is confident that the sprightly Brazilian will be passed fit for the midweek encounter, lining him up for a start at Newcastle United on Sunday. Coutinho has emerged as the prime route into a revitalised Reds attack, notching four goals and one assist across his last trio of starts. Furthermore, he ranked top among midfielders for attempts (12) and shots on target (six) between Gameweeks 11-13, highlighting his license to almost operate as a second striker within the Merseysiders’ fluid system. Roberto Firmino presents the strongest challenge to Coutinho’s throne, having welcomed 65,000 new owners in the wake of his 15-point haul at the Etihad. He places third among his counterparts for shots inside the box (eight) across the last four Gameweeks, which bodes well for further attacking returns.

Central Midfield Concerns for Everton

Roberto Martinez has confirmed that double-pivot pair James McCarthy and Gareth Barry are both touch-and-go for Everton’s League Cup quarter-final against Middlesbrough tonight:

“James overextended his upper hip muscle, a little bit higher than the groin. It was quite sore yesterday, but we’ll find out more today. The same can be said for Gareth Barry. He had a really nasty knock in the shin area with stud marks and was finding it difficult to walk yesterday. Those two players will have to be assessed before we announce the squad.”

The Scout Says: With the likes of Tom Cleverley, Darron Gibson and Muhamed Besic waiting in the wings, the Toffees are not short of midfield options, negating the possibility of Ross Barkley dropping back into the double pivot. Nonetheless, both men have been mainstays throughout the course of this term, so their potential absences could impair Everton’s effectiveness as a unit this weekend. On the topic of their key midfield recruits, Barkley (three goals and two assists in two) and Gerard Deulofeu (one goal and five assists in five) have invited investment by virtue of their recent form, with Barkley currently serving as the more profitable pick-up. The underlying statistics also favour the former, given that he’s chalked up eight more attempts (nine compared to one) and four more key passes (11 to seven) since Gameweek 11.

Fellaini Stars for United Reserves

Marouane Fellaini bagged a goal and two assists for Manchester United’s U21s as they recorded a 3-2 win over Liverpool.

The Scout Says: The spread of Manchester United’s attacking returns, allied with the fact that they’ve carded the second fewest shots inside the box (77) this season has limited the appeal of their midfield and forward contingent. Fellaini has been a peripheral figure under Louis van Gaal and earned just one start all season, suggesting that last night’s display is unlikely to earn him a first-team recall in spite of his side’s struggles in the final third. The Red Devils’ rearguard – which has conceded two goals and claimed four clean sheets in the last six Gameweeks – harbours the most Fantasy potential, with Chris Smalling (6.8) representing the pick of the bunch due to his security of starts ahead of a potentially prosperous run of fixtures (WHU, bou, NOR, sto, CHE, SWA, new).

I lived in Bristol 20 years ago whilst at UWE. Brynland Ave Horfield by the cricket ground, then Cotham and Redland. Great days. Everytime I think about it I realise how much I miss it. Probably the best few years of my life!

The dives we used to frequent... Coseys, Thekla, Kickers, Whiteladies Rd cresta run, Steam Tavern, Highbury Vaults as mentioned above the Corrie Tap. And lunch at browns if you're parents ever visited lol.

Used to watch the Rovers and the rugby at the Memorial ground.

Anyone know if it's still there?

    Butland
    Smalling – Bellerín – Moreno
    Özil – Mahrez – Bolasie – Willian
    Agüero – Lukaku – Kane

    Hennessey – Ward – Simpson – Lingard

    1FT; 2.6 itb

Don´t want Barkley, maybe Firmino/Coutinho for Bolasie but not sure
Saving for rainy days is what i’m leaning

Bolasie-Coutihno feels decent if he's passed fit. Should certainly be far more consistent for you and has much better fixtures. I'd seriously consider, but waiting a week to get a better idea on exactly which pool mid you want might be best.

          Yeah, not easy.
Kolarov has attacking potential though, and is on FK.

Even better would be coming on for half an hour, I suppose? Less fatigue to recover from.

Even if he plays 90, looks a good bet for the weekend.

    Help

    A: Sell Depay for Barkley/Alli/Dembele/King
    B: Sell Bolasie for Barkley/Alli/Dembele/King
    C: Hold and save FT

    Team
    Cech (Butland)
    Moreno, Darmian, Bellerin (Pieters, Cedric)
    KDB, Coutinho, Ozil, Bolasie (Depay)
    Vardy, Lukaku, Ighalo

    1FT, 1,1 ITB

#1 in my ML, so I don't need to chase.

    Thanks

Ship Darmian/Cedric for Rose/Zouma with your FT.
If you don't start Cedric vs Villa at home, what's the point

        Haha I know.

I've just been stubborn and hoping for that miracle 😉 Started him for the first time in ages in GW 13 (over KDB), where he got a goal. Hoped that it would mean a starting spot (or at least a price rise here)

    Myhill (McCarthy)
    VVD Coleman Darmian (Toby, Saylor)
    Ozil, KDB, Coutinho, Barkley (Westwood)
    Kane, Lukaku, Ighalo

Plan is to shift Saylor, Westwood and Myhill in that order.

Incoming, some cheap defender, Alli, DDG or Butland.

    How is that plan?

Depending on the Ben Foster situation I would say GK needs to be higher priority. No plans for Aguero?

        No Aguero.

Too many good striker options to tie down that amount. He has also scored in three games only I think.

I decided against it a couple of weeks back, and it was nailed when I shipped out Sanchez last night.

I don't know about Foster. He is back soon then I take it. Then the priorities change.

I often see people going to a lot of trouble to compile a lot of statistical information and write some great pieces regarding fantasy football statistics. Recently we had the 'one stat to rule them all' article (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/10/01/one-stat-to-rule-them-all/) and a great article looking at the average number of goals per game varying between kick-off times (cna't find the link but it this week). However, one thing that strikes me is that these databases, that are so laborious to construct, have so much more data within them that could be analysed using more advanced statistical methods.

    STATS 101 (an aside):

There are two forms of statistics; descriptive and inferential. Descriptive statistics (like the 'average' or 'mean') can only describe data, inferential statistics (such as a t-test or regression) allow you to make (very careful) inferences about data. For example, with the data set in hand you could calculate the probability that more goals are scored at 3.00pm than at 12.30pm. If this probability was high (typically more than 95%) we could conclude that there are more goals scored at a specific time and plan accordingly. Other ideas include:

Do teams really have a Europa hangover?

What is the 'one stat to rule them all' regarding the previous four weeks statistics? (a more complicated version of the previous 'one stat to rule them all' project by using regression instead of correlation and assessing the last four weeks at a time, not the season overall)

I've always wanted to look at these problems but as I don't have the time to mine so much data. But as a community we could do loads. Plus there seems to be a wealth of data already out there mined that could be used anyway. What I'm suggesting is creating a statisticians team to mine data, create ideas and run analyses. No formal experience would be required, I could take on all the statistical tests (although any help would be welcome), just enthusiasm and a bit of time to gather some data. If 5 people could give 2 hours a week we could complete all the projects listed above in a month. Certainly it would be great if those who have already mined data could join in and make those data sets available. I'd love to get my hands on them and would be happy to report back as an article for all.

What do people think? Any ideas for analyses? Myths to bust?

For years I've wanted to do some proper hypothesis testing with t-tests etc People bandy about the term 'significance' with wild abandon without knowing that it has special meaning in the world of statistics.

The sticking point is the size of the datasets we're usually talking about. A few things, like the kick-off times analysis, would be very amenable to a test with a large sample size. But usually we're talking about sample sizes that would virtually preclude the emergence of statistically significant results, just because data from different seasons aren't usually comparable - different teams, squads, managers etc etc

But I love the principle and if you can find candidate analyses that work with large datasets then that would be wonderful 🙂

Thanks Roscola. I agree with your thoughts regarding the size of the data sets but theres a couple of ways we could get around it.

We could use a combination of parametric tests, non-parametric tests (that don't need the same large sample size) and an emphasis on estimation analysis (i.e. confidence intervals on point estimates). Couple these with a power analysis and we could make a decent prediction about the question at hand and also the relative accuracy of the question at hand. Statistical significance as a concept has had quite a beating the last few years and so this holistic approach could really help.

Considering the kick-off times analysis in particular I think we could argue that we could get a decent sample size anyway. If we had kick off times from the last five years that would be (very roughly):

          180 Saturday early kick offs
          180 Saturday late kick offs
          180 Sunday 1.00pm kick offs
          180 Sunday late kick offs
          140 MNF's
          950 Saturday 3.00pm kick offs.

          That's enough for any test.
