Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 22

Sergio Aguero’s one-man demolition of Crystal Palace brings Fantasy managers racing to acquire his services. Newcastle’s recent upturn in attacking potential also arrives on our radar, whilst Riyad Mahrez’ stock is on the decline after another miss from the spot sees him stripped of Leicester’s penalty duties.

The Player

A 16-point haul at home to an out-of-sorts Palace, courtesy of two goals, an assist and maximum bonus points, showed why Sergio Aguero remains peerless amongst premium-priced frontmen across the Fantasy games.

In a week where the likes of Harry Kane, Diego Costa and Wayne Rooney all gathered up the points, it was the Argentine’s virtuoso display that has many non-owners reconsidering their stance.

Gradually eased into action by Manuel Pellegrini over the winter period, Aguero welcomed Alan Pardew’s side on the back of two goals and a pair of assists in four matches across all competitions.

That weekend brace means Aguero has scored every 108.1 minutes this season – substantially quicker than any other frontman and not far off last term’s 101.6 minutes, where he netted 26 times.

In a season where only one of the top five scoring FPL midfielders is priced over 7.5, budgetary issues certainly shouldn’t be a concern when freeing up the cash to draft in the Argentine. Also bearing in mind that City’s most popular Fantasy pick Kevin De Bruyne has now scored just once in the last eight Gameweeks, it’s difficult to overlook a fully-fit Aguero as the primary source of attacking points from the Premier League’s most prolific scorers.

Already subject to a price rise since his weekend endeavours, Aguero has been drafted into 80,000+ FPL sides, with his ownership sitting at 20% and rising.

Providing Pellegrini can keep his star striker out of the treatment room from this point onwards, Aguero’s weekend output sounded an ominous warning for those brave enough to still overlook his talents from this point onwards.

The Team

A 2-1 win over West Ham boosted Newcastle’s survival bid as Steve McClaren’s charges finally show some signs of their attacking capabilities.

Having salvaged a 3-3 draw with United in midweek, the Magpies put an end to the Hammers’ eight-match unbeaten run thanks to talisman Georginio Wijnaldum, whose goal and assist took him to third in the midfield standings. Like Aguero, the Dutchman has also been subject to a price hike and at just 6.9, he looks an ideal candidate for our five-man midfields as the Tyneside team step up their efforts in the final third.

Although Wijnaldum’s output has justified the underlying numbers, Aleksandar Mitrovic is bubbling under as a cheap third forward – the Serbian has scored just once in the last six Gameweeks but has registered more efforts inside the box (20) than any other striker.

Indeed, over the last two Gameweeks, Newcastle have produced 23 shots inside the box – a tally bettered only by Spurs and City, with 24 apiece, whilst in terms of efforts on target, they sit at the summit with Tottenham on 16.

Further back, Daryl Janmaat’s assist against the Hammers arrived on the back of Paul Dummett’s last-gasp leveler against United on Tuesday evening, as McClaren’s full-backs start to benefit from a more offensive style of play.

With new boy Jonjo Shelvey pulling the strings in central midfield, there’s a growing sense of optimism that the St James’ Park outfit now have the confidence to stave off the threat of relegation. Upcoming clashes against Watford, Everton and West Brom offer a platform to maintain their momentum and play their way into our Fantasy plans.

The Talking Point

A second unsuccessful spot-kick in the last three Gameweeks by Riyad Mahrez has Fantasy owners considering their options as Leicester’s toils in attack continue.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Villa means that the Foxes have scored just twice in the last five Gameweeks, with Mahrez drawing blanks on each occasion. Given that Jamie Vardy has scored once in eight league outings, the Algerian’s ability to earn assists has also taken a real turn for the worse – indeed, he has created just one goal in nine Gameweeks.

Frustratingly, if Mahrez had tucked away his penalties, there’d be no issue of concern and we’d be revelling in his essential status. Instead – as confirmed by Claudio Ranieri yesterday – we’re now faced with a situation where the most popular player in the FPL game has been stripped of spot-kick duties in light of his recent failings.

Still sitting in over 65% of FPL teams, Mahrez’ winter malaise isn’t quite on a par with Eden Hazard’s fall from Fantasy grace, though the removal of penalties clearly dents his appeal, given that four of his 13 goals have arrived from the spot. Conversely, Vardy owners will be hoping his record of three successful spot-kicks in the top flight this term can bolster his own flagging campaign.

One look at the fixture list suggests the upcoming period could be a defining one in Mahrez’ season. The Foxes are set to face Stoke and Liverpool at the King Power before making their way to City and Arsenal – that’s three of the league’s top five defences in the next four Gameweeks.

Whilst we’re not writing off a player who has served up nine double-figure hauls in 21 appearances, there’s no doubt that his downturn in output needs to be monitored. Should Mahrez’ early-season form fail to resurface over those next few matches, many may well be looking elsewhere as the competition for our five-man midfields intensifies over the run-in.

I find that a lot of my points are gained when I'm using less defenders for this very reason. If I get a CS along the way then all the better.

Yep, hence Lukaku, Kane and Kun up top.

However, the midfield is becoming increasingly harder to predict too!

    4.0, Mahrez, Bellerin, Wolly.

my thoughts are you''ll mostly play 4, and bench one
therefore its A) Ozil every week vs B) Barkly/Mahrez rotation.

I'm in the minority here with Bellerin. Norwich always score at home - Chelsea like to park the bus away at top sides. For attacking points, I'd say both are about equal going forwards, although Bellerin does have more assists.

Very off topic, but my fiancee and I are looking into moving to South East Asia to teach English (yes, this is some kind of quarter life crisis). I don't think I can do an office job in London for the next 40+ years.

Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions on where to go/what to do? I'm going to do a TEFL course, but other than that it's a blank slate, no real preconceptions on where we're going.

She isn't, but she has also done a TEFL qualification. It's not necessarily looking into teaching as a lengthy career, it's more a way to support ourselves while travelling. We both have good degrees and apparently, for anyone with a degree and a TEFL qualification, Asia has tons of TEFL jobs.

I can only go with my friend told me. He says the Thai boys are similar to over here, trying to act cool and impress the ladies, whereas the Korean boys are real hard workers. Even at that age, there's a lot of pressure on them to succeed, which is what he didn't really like.

Just been messaging my friend. He says you wouldn't find it hard to find a job in Thailand. Advises to not go through an agent and instead have a contract directly with the school. Says to look at ajarn.com - loads of info there.

Warning though, he says Thailand is great if you're in your 20's, but even better if you're not married!

I had a pre-midlife crisis and moved to Japan for 3 years in my late 20's so know the feeling.
I did my TEFL at International House in London which had a good reputation and then found a job in the back of the Guardian.
I think it takes a certain type of person to be able to do it for any length of time but is a great way to live abroad for an extended period.
Not sure about SE Asia but happy to tell more on Japan if interested.

SE Asia was just a starting point (trying to narrow down a search from "the entire world"). Japan is somewhere that we've often discussed and would certainly be interested in.

It is an amazing country but you'll likely work really hard with little holiday except those national holidays (two separate weeks in spring and summer). The language is really interesting to learn and it is really friendly and safe.
You'll always be an outsider but if you can deal with that then it's all good.
I earned plenty enough to cover everything - a flat is often included with the job even if rent is taken from your pay which eases transition. There are plenty of companies that have national coverage so if you found a city you thought interesting you could target there.
Most go to Tokyo but I spent two years in Hiroshima and one in a smaller city called Okayama.
I'd have no hesitation in recommending Japan as a destination for what your thinking!

Thank you very much for taking the time for that Peggs, Japan has always fascinated me (and also mildly scared me, primarily due to Lost in Translation) 😉

I'm happy enough being a bit of an outsider - being a scouser in London is like being a circus act at times. Japan will certainly be on our list when we begin to whittle it down (what we may do is, say, 6 months here and there in various cities/countries).

              Thanks again!

Lost in Translation certainly got me interested but with perspective it's a little racist tbh! You'll definitely be able to get under the showers 😉
When I was there (2004-2007) it was pretty easy to pick up contracts if you were willing to commit to 6 months (a year is better obv) but make sure to read forums for TEFL teachers (there's large communities) to help avoid the less reputable schools/companies.

Who is the best "5th midfielder"? Looking for someone for less than 5m, nailed on.

With Özil, KDB, Payet, Mahrez and Alli, I'm considering shipping Mahrez this week (and sticking with Vardy) for a cheapie, to do Özil to Sanchez once I know he's back in shape.

      Any thoughts?

      Hoolahan?
      Gosling?
      Drinkwater?

Never many CS that day, and I can take out an expensive defender to have a P5 midfield.

In GW38 there's normally a high chance of a forward player being rested - but at least then you haven't lost out by using the chip - a lot of people do.

I'm done deliberating. Charlie Daniels is in.

Only defender in the league that takes pens (first choice). Only 4.5. Sunderland and a goal shy Palace up next. No other stand out defender options as I don't trust Everton for cleanies.
