Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 31

Southampton’s in-form frontman spearheads a dramatic win over Liverpool. Norwich’s bid for survival takes a step in the right direction, whilst Riyad Mahrez and Harry Kane stake yet another claim to remain in our wildcards plans for the run-in, despite the lack of a double.

The Player

A goal and two assists in Southampton’s stunning comeback win over Liverpool continued Graziano Pelle’s recent return to form.

Having bagged a brace in a 2-1 win at Stoke in the previous Gameweek, the Italian served up a 15-point haul on Saturday – his highest of the season – to take his tally to nine goals and seven assists in 20 league starts.

Pelle’s weekend haul means he’s racked up 28 points in the last two Gameweeks – put into perspective, Sergio Aguero has produced 30 points in his previous seven.

Granted, the Saints’ lack of a double Gameweek is a major deterrent for any would-be investors with wildcards in hand right now. Nonetheless, Pelle’s penchant for going on scoring streaks – he racked up four goals and five assists in five outings between Gameweeks 4-8 – suggests he could still thrive as a Fantasy option over the run-in.

Sitting just four points off fourth spot, the Saints’ testing trip to Leicester is then followed by a trio of encounters with Newcastle, Everton and Villa’s dodgy defences. With a Champions League spot still in the balance, the Italian’s renewed confidence may well prove decisive as Ronald Koeman’s side look to build momentum on the back of their weekend win against the Merseysiders.

The Team

Whilst Newcastle and Sunderland had to settle for a point apiece in the Tyne-Wear derby, relegation rivals Norwich distanced themselves from the bottom three with a vital away win at West Brom.

Having ground out a goalless draw with City the previous weekend, Alex Neil’s men managed to nullify a Baggies side that had picked up ten points in four, thanks to a trio of wins over Everton, Palace and United and a draw at the King Power.

With their confidence on the up, Norwich are showing they have the stomach for a fight and the stats show they have tightened up considerably at the back, conceding just one big chance over their last four matches. For those who have already played their wildcards, the likes of Timm Klose – with five bonus points collected over the last two – is emerging as a late-season budget enabler at 4.2. Wes Hoolahan, with two goals and a pair of assists in his last four home fixtures, and weekend goal hero Robbie Brady (two goals in his last four starts) may prove influential in the absence of the injured Nathan Redmond.

Up next for the Carrow Road club is a trio of fixtures that may ultimately determined their top-flight status. The Canaries entertain both Newcastle and Sunderland in a pair of proverbial six-pointers, with a trip to Selhurst Park – where Palace have lost six on the bounce – sandwiched in between.

With a double Gameweek 37 offering back-to-back home encounters against United and Watford, Norwich may yet harbour some Fantasy appeal as Neil attempts to prevent a slide back into the Championship.

The Talking Point

Last week’s double Gameweek announcements give us plenty to plan and prepare for over the current international break.

As we look to assemble our squads to take advantage of the remaining schedule, there’s a concern that going “all in” on the double Gameweek sides, and using a bench boost chip to field 15 players with a pair of fixtures, may be a little overzealous.

This is compounded by the recent showings of Riyad Mahrez and Harry Kane, who are becoming increasingly crucial to their side’s title bids.

Whereas Jamie Vardy has scored just once in the last seven Gameweeks, Mahrez has averaged 6.7 points over the same period and netted Leicester’s winner in two of the last three. Kane 16-point return at home to Bournemouth, meanwhile, means he has delivered successive double-figure hauls for the first time this term. At a time when Sergio Aguero is struggling for form, the Spurs man has proven a very capable armband alternative.

The Gameweek 35 schedule, where six teams – including five of the sides with doubles in the previous round of fixtures – also has to be factored into our planning. Whilst the likes of West Ham, Everton and United face the weekend off, Leicester and Spurs are both handed home comforts, with Mahrez hosting Swansea and Kane welcoming West Brom to the Lane.

Given that the duo are two of the three most popular players in Fantasy Premier League, with 68% and 46% ownerships respectively, parting company won’t come without risk – Mahrez has 11 double-figure hauls to his name this season, whilst Kane is now up to seven, highlighting their explosive potential.

Whilst the allure of the double Gameweeks is irresistible, maintaining a balance to our 15-man squads – in terms of both form players and fixtures – will be key. Obviously, opting for a double Gameweek player could pay off but given their current levels of form and reliability, is parting company with one, or both, an unnecessary risk too far?

    Feedback needed, guys.

I wildcarded, and this is what my new team looks like atm.

    GK: De Gea, Caballero
DEF: Smalling, Bellerin, Clyne, Janmaat, Evans
MID: De Bruyne, Sanchez, Firmino, Milner, Lanzini
    FWD: Aguero, Welbeck, Rashford

£0,1 itb, so not a huge buffer for emergencies.

Short comment: Caballero is in only if Hart medical tells us he is out for 1month+, The aim for this team is to rock the first DGW with BB. GW37 is TC, so I do not need that many DGW players then. Changes will be made towards GW37, getting rid of those with poor fixtures towards the end, and getting in some new DGWs. Aggy, KDB, Sanchez and Firmino will be captain alternatives.

So, what do you think? Any suggestions for changing up the team? With the aim of rocking FPL in GW34, am I gtg? Every comment is highly valued =)

Probably not the greatest idea to do transfers prior to international fixtures in future, KL - wait until after so you don't "waste" your FT on a player who could get injured.

Leave it for now til the Thurs/Fri so you can ensure all of your players are present and accounted for.

ps taking hits if you're chasing is never really advisable imo, puts you at a further disadvantage!

    I think I've cracked it.

    De Gea / Eliot
    Bellerin / Sakho / Collins / Nyom / Simpson
    Payet / Ozil / Sanchez / Coutinho / Mahrez
    Kane / Aguero / Rashford

Bit of a dodgy GW33, but then a bench boost GW34 with 12 DGW players, followed by a decent looking GW35.

Plans from 35 onwards will be to bring in Robles, Ighalo, Costa and probably Lukaku - giving me a pretty strong 9 or 10 players for DGW37.

Also gives me Ozil and Sanchez for Norwich and Villa, as well as their DGW.

Not sure if you have any thoughts or if this might help, but am finding this easier if I move back from 15 DGW players.

          Nice one dude.

          I'm on the following:

          DDG / Migs
Monreal 5.3 City Janmaat Delaney Olsson
          Payet Ozil Coutinho Marhez Lingard
          Lukakuuuu Kane Kun
          0.4itb

Unfortunately I need a budget midfielder cos my SV isn't as high as yours - I know I've invested a lot in goal but it seems the best way to chart those fixtures.

Wish I had your SV 🙂

              Hmm... very interesting indeed.

I do like Lukaku, though, as a more boring prospect, especially as he has THREE dgws coming up potentially - he'll just skyrocket in value, so I can't see past having the 3 big guns currently.

My GW32 tansfers as I need to use up 2FTs thinking of:

    Butland > Courtois
    Toby > Bellerin / Cresswell

Just as 'safe' punts to use free transfers before my WC in 33

    Silly or sensible?

*Likely to keep Alli and Kane, but not Toby

    1. Individual
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 3 months ago

Yeah, sensible! Bit boring as a punt, though!

I have a similar issue tbh, my defence is pretty cack for the upcoming GW:
Daniels (MCI) / Ivan (avl) / Fuchs (SOT) / Saylor (nor) / Dann (whu)
So I kind of feel like I should just do an obvious Ars defender in

But it just seems so boring pre-wildcard lol

Can you make a punt elsewhere? Maybe leave Butland in, do Toby --> Bellers (good to "lock" his value for your wildcard) and see in midfield if you can do something silly?

Am thinking either Eriksen -> Sanchez or Shaqiri -> Khazri myself lol

I'm playing very boring, I've no need for any fun punts to be honest.

          1. Individual
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 3 months ago

Fair enough!! And yeah if you have 2fts I'd be tempted to spend 1 on Bellers now - he's not in the Spain squad so it's very unlikely he'll be injured.

On the fun punt thing: I'd just be tempted to get someone in with bigger upside than Courtois for your second FT, if you see what I mean? I can't imagine (barring a lucky pen save) the margin of points advantage would be especially good for you, especially if you're wildcarding next; I don't see Courtois making many saves, for example. I kind of think you can gain a much bigger advantage through a punt in midfield / up front on someone like Khazri, Traore, Lanzini rather than a keeper.

But it depends so much on your view of things - I play with the notion of calculated risk, hence my advice!
            🙂

    A) upgrading one of the mids to Firmino (if so, who)?
    B) Upgrading a defender to Smalling?
    C) Upgrading Elliot?

This is the first working draft I have seen which does not have Pool. Congrats. I might just copy this if I don't decide to get Sanchez.

I could go for Sanchez over Ozil.. but I just don't see any value in him at the moment for his price..

Any one else foreseen this possible scenario?

Man City finish 5th in the league but get to the final against Bayern Munich.
    Give Pep a big decision.

Serve him right for treating Pellegrini in that manner, very disrespectful imo. And also a classic case of ruining your predecessor's chances to make yourself look better when you take over.

Should everyone come out of the international break safely who would you bring in with 2FT & £1.8m ITB:

    A) Fernandez -> Azpilicueta
    B) Sigurdsson -> Chelsea (but who £8m to spend)
    C) Alli -> Only Traore affordable from Chelsea that could get points

Or does anyone feel another midfielder from a different side? I can't look past whoever plays Villa currently

All we need next week is

LVG: Why would i drop the most inform striker we have? He's young and he's banging them in. He stays.

If LvG says something to the effect that he starts anyway till the dGWs get over, it makes teams too easy. Everyone will have a great midfield and defence. And strikers. No fun at all

    RIght hows this for GW34:

    HART
    MORENO MONREAL Simpson
    SANCHEZ (TC) SILVA PAYET LINGARD/Mahrez
    AGUERO IGHALO kane

    HENNESSEY Lingard/Mahrez Wimmer Wollschied

Means I can play a pretty decent 11 in 35 and then WC.

any hits required to field that team KoL?

maybe deeney instead of Ighalo? and/or Firm/Cout instead of Silva?

        No hits required.

I already have Silva so Firm/Coutinho would cost -4.

I think we all going to have both Kun-Lukaku but Deeney for third striker spot would allow one extra big hitting mid. Problem is gw35

Seems most going for WC33 with BB34 in mind, But I'm toying with the idea of TC34 (Özil,or Sanchez) and BB37 with following provisional team:

    de Gea - Mannone
    Bellerin - Monreal - Reid - Simpson - Kirchoff
    Özil - Couthino - Payet - Lennon - Mahrez
    Aguero - Lukaku - Kane

which enables me to field following number of players if counting FT's right:
    GW34 11/11DGW
    GW35 11 (1FT)
    GW36 11 (use FT for GW37)
    GW37 11/14DGW (2FT)

    Good plan?

This is brilliant actually as a concept. I will need to evaluate this option for myself.

Not a fan of Lennon but I guess he is there because of budget issues.

Lennon for budget issues - depends on whether keeping Kane or not, might also downgrade DdG to Adrian.
Key to this is Kirchhoff + MAnnone, who I actually think might be decent options for DGW37 clean sheets, when they'll surely put up a fight to stay up

Need to use up 1 of my FT's to get in a DGW player. None of them of look that appetising for GW 32 and 33. Any early recommendations?

    A. Forster > De Gea (Everton, Spurs)
    B. Sigurdsson > Firmino/Coutinho/Lallana (Spurs, Stoke)
    C. Daniels > Sahko/Flanagan
    D. Vardy > Lukaku (Man Utd/Watford)

    Leaning towards A, or B.

At the moment, I have Ozil, Bellerin and Payet. Pretty tight budget for transfers, as I'm holding onto Kane and Kun. Might not be able to afford Cresswell, but West Ham are a good shout for the next couple of GW's. Cheers!
