Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round-up

David Moyes wins his first match in charge at Sunderland, Jordan Mutch continues Crystal Palace’ unbeaten summer run and Middlesbrough cruise to victory in the Spanish sun.

Here’s the latest from a low-key day of action…

Stade Nyonnais 0 Sunderland 2

Two penalties from Duncan Watmore handed David Moyes his first win as the new Sunderland manager blooded eight Academy players.

Watmore, priced at 5.0 and listed as a midfielder in the official Fantasy Premier League game, was used up front as Jermain Defoe missed the match with a niggle.

As highlighted in our Budget Midfielder article, Watmore could offer great value if he is deployed in advanced positions by Moyes, and he did his case for a forward berth no harm in Switzerland.

He earned the first penalty himself and slotted home the second just before half-time following a foul on George Honeyman.

Moyes recalled Billy Jones and Lee Cattermole after they recovered from minor knocks and fielded Jack Rodwell as a makeshift centre-half, but otherwise used his more senior players sparingly in the hot Alpine conditions.

Sunderland XI: Mannone, Jones, Ledger, Rodwell (J Robson 46), T Robson (Borini 76), Cattermole (N’Zogbia 46), E Robson, Honeyman (Van Aaanholt 76), Gooch (Khazri 76), Watmore (Asoro 64), Greenwood (Lens 76).

Colchester United 0 Crystal Palace 1

Jordan Mutch’s sweet strike from a Jason Puncheon assist made it three straight pre-season wins for Palace.

Alan Pardew gave 20 players a run-out and, having trialled a 3-5-2 in the previous friendly, opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation with Connor Wickham as the lone striker supported by Andros Townsend, Puncheon and Yannick Bolasie, who managed just under 60 minutes in his first start of the summer.

Mutch and Hiram Boateng anchored the midfield and Pardew gave Alex McCarthy the full 90 minutes in goal.

Wilfried Zaha, James Tomkins, Bakary Sako and James McArthur all missed out, with Pardew confirming pre-match:

”They just have minor knocks that they’re not really ready for the game, so we’ll see how they are on Wednesday ahead of Wimbledon.”

Crystal Palace XI: McCarthy, Ward, Dann (Kelly 70), Delaney (Croll 70), Fryers (Binnom-Williams 78), Boateng (Jedinak 59), Mutch (Ladapo 85), Puncheon (Lee 59), Bolasie (Kaikai 59), Townsend (Berkeley-Agyepong 70), Wickham (Campbell 45).

Middlesbrough 2 Al-Ahli 0

Middlesbrough ended their time in southern Spain with a 2-0 win over Saudi champions Al-Ahli.

Second half goals from David Nugent and a fine individual strike from Julien de Sart sealed the victory for Aitor Karanka’s team.

Viktor Fischer provided the assist for Nugent’s goal, with Karanka again using the Danish international winger in the No10 position, although he later partnered Nugent in attack.

Eleven changes were made for the final 20 minutes, with Alvaro Negredo and Jordan Rhodes used up front, and Karanka also experimented by deploying left winger Adam Reach as a full-back as he seeks cover for first-choice left back George Friend.

The coach was happy enough with his side’s Spanish trip, saying:

“We have three weeks to fix one or two things. We still need players like Dani Ayala to recover – I don’t think Grant (Leadbitter) will be ready – but it’s good that we have three weeks to work at home.”

Centre-half Ayala, who has not featured in pre-season due to an ankle injury, is still ‘a week to 10 days’ away from selection, Karanka added.

Middlesbrough XI: Konstantopoulos (Mejias 70), Nsue (Barragan 70), Baptiste (Morris 70), Jackson (Gibson 70), Reach (Friend 70), Forshaw (Clayton 70), De Sart (de Roon 70), Stuani (Ramirez 70), Fischer (Negredo 70), De Pena (Adomah 70), Nugent (Rhodes 70).

Fantasy Football Daily Hot Topic - Form or fixtures?

Form or fixtures is a big topic of conversation between Fantasy Managers throughout the season and one that never goes away.

At the beginning of the season we don't really have any form to go on, aside from pre-season form. How much of pre-season should be taken into account when choosing your GW1 squad?

Or do you just go for fixtures alone and wait and see how different players and teams start performing?

For example, West Brom have fairly decent opening fixtures - cpl - EVE - MID - bou - WHM. A lot of people are looking at one defender at least. Would you also go for someone like Rondon based on these fixtures or would you look at last seasons attacking form (second lowest scorers in the league) and assume it's going to be the same?

Likewise - Liverpool have fairly difficult opening fixtures - ars - bur - tot - LEI - che, but have a range of attacking options and were the 6th highest scorers in the league last year. If Sturridge or Origi start firing and Mane kicks on from Southampton could we see players hitting form straight away even with the bad fixtures?

Will you be going for form, fixtures or a bit of both? How does your style change as the season progresses?

Try as hard as possible to ignore pre-season form.

Largely operate on fixtures to begin with and a few gut feelings here and there

I'd say use common sense. Yes, pre-season is a bit of a "Lego League" where teams build and play around to get players fit. Obviously if somebody stands out or do horrible it would affect your judgement.

Very different come gameweek 1 though where players give everything and teams line up with their strongest squads.

      A bit of both.

        So past form then? 🙂

That's fair enough - Aguero top of that list I suppose. Who next?

After least season i took keen interest in finding a correlation between end of last season form and the start of new season because of how Mahrez and Vardy started the season.

These are the top scorers from the last 8 GWs of the last season.

      GK
      Mannon 45
      Schmiechel 40
      DDG 40
      Darlow 38
      Lloris 34

      DEF
      Bellerin 58
      Morgan 53
      Kos 49
      Fuchs 48
      Monreal 47
      Kone 46
      Valencia 42
      PVA 42
      Simpson 41
      Toby 40
      Moreno 39
      Baines 38
      Kaboul 38

      MID

      Alexis 69
      Mane 62
      Tadic 51
      Townsend 49
      Eriksen 49
      Fabregas 47
      Ayew 45
      Alli 43
      Siggy 43
      Noble 43
      Wijnaldum 43
      Lamela 42
      Payet 41
      Hazard 38
      Mata 38

      FOR

      Kane 64
      Aguero 63
      Pelle 53
      Caroll 48
      Sturridge 45
      Deeney 44
      Giroud 42
      Martial 42
      Long 40
      Iheanacho 40
      Vardy 39
      Defoe 38

Now i know there are lot of factors in play. Primarily with respect to what teams have to play for but i am keeping this watchlist in mind.

100% agree with this. In general looking at the last 8-10 weeks of points scored, weighted for fixtures gives a decent prediction of points over the next 6 weeks of games.

Definitely a bit of both approach for me Andy. Mixture of last years form balanced with PS performances (although allot less weight given to the latter). Fixtures however probably play their most part for me early doors as obviously form is not there in a competitive new season sense and then as we progress form over fixtures will start winning out.

The league is so competitive now that fixtures are becoming really tough to predict. I usually go for Fixtures, but I might be inclined to go for the In Form players this year.

      for me
      1) nailed on, 95% will start in gw1
      2) proven
      3) fixtures
      4) pre season form

i try to opt for nailed on proven players with good fixtures
      eg foster, siggy, kun

i will take pre season form with a pinch of salt

I think I've got this one cracked Andy...

Use form/past performance to identify potential targets, then apply a filter of fixtures to select from your shortlist.

Seems to me that if you use fixtures as your starting point, you end up with some poor selections -believe me, I've been there!

Opening day fixtures are in my mind. Aguero, Long and Gray all at home. Heaton and Keane for a Burnley double up at the back.

Also covering Spurs with Eriksen and Utd with Shaw and Mkhi. Firmino is in though so it's a bit of both. I like players that are sure to start from not playing internationals over the summer as much as anything. Also keeping an eye on EL and CL qualifiers too.

Looking at fixtures *is* looking at form. It's the form of the opponents.

If you can't predict the form of players then how can you predict the form of the opponents players?

Do you think Feghouli is going to
        1) be nailed
        2) deliver anything meaningful from an FPL perspective?

Undeniable talent. But never scored more than 6 in a season and looked a bit all over the place last few seasons.

        I like Fisher though.

Redmond is probably worth the .5 more than Feghouli in my eyes. Should shine in a stronger team, with better finishers.

Got lost on the previous post.

I don't know how teams set themselves up to wildcard in a particular week. That's just plain rubbish as a strategy imo. How are you so sure that your teams will need a wildcard the week you plan to play it?

I know we have a lot of unanswered questions and lots of news will emerge by GW3-4 but back yourself to get lucky/give yourself the best chance to get lucky in the first few GWs. I really don't get how one sets themselves up for an early wildcard. You give your team the best chance to get lucky and they either you need it or you don't. Wildcards have always been a fall back/fix or a chip playing tool for me(last season).

Probably my confidence dictating this but i still don't get it.

The logic is that by actually planning it, you don't HAVE to use it. What it does is help you focus on the early weeks, and if, like you say, get some luck and things go well early on you may not need to use it.

Just helps with not planning too far ahead I guess

I guess it's a little different since the new wildcard rules where we have one to burn in the first half of the season, but I agree I wouldn't plan to use it on a specific GW. I'm setting my team up HOPEFULLY for the long-ish haul, but if the start of this season is anything like last season, most here will obviously want to use the first WC early again.

That's a good point and definitely worth considering.

I guess I think of my first WC as more of a safety net that I'd like to keep as long as possible and use when the time feels right (too many injuries/suspensions, too many players I don't have performing well etc.), but I can definitely see your approach paying off, if well-executed.

I have wildcarded in the first few weeks every year so it makes perfect sense to actually plan for it this year and give myself the best chance of a good start by only picking players with the best early fixtures. Calling the idea 'plain rubbish' typifies your arrogance

You set up yourself for a good start planning short term is a great tactic. But are you saying you will definitely wildcard gw4 if you have the inform players either way. Start of the season is a bit like gambling but if you get lucky you don't need to wildcard and thats the reason why im saying i can't get my head around a definite gw 'x' wildcard strategy.

I don't see where either myself or anyone else has said we will 'definitely' play the wc regardless. It's simply about giving myself the best chance of a good start based on the fact that I have wildcarded early every year

Not pointing. Infact this was a discussion had on a whatsapp group that i thought i should take on here where a few folks had made up their mind about which gw the wc would be used.

People tend to plan their wildcards in the beginning by just looking at the fixtures really. There's no form to go on. There are surprises every week and for that reason, I am not planning a WC in a given week of course, I'll use it when I think I need it.

Of course. I just thought people were hell bent on plonking an early wildcard and i was wondering if its an FFS norm that needs questioning.

            1. Ruth_NZ
              • 9 Years
              7 years, 10 months ago

It's not a FFS norm for me, I don't care what anyone else is doing.

              I'll give you some reasons.

              1. Prior to last season there was a legitimate choice to be made between early and late (DGW) wildcard. Now you can do both.

              2. The benefits of going early are to help build TV and to re-arrange the squad after seeing some actual games. This season there's an international break after GW3 and the transfer window closes then as well. It's an obvious time. Though my initial selection will be good for GW4 as well and I might possibly hold on an extra week.

              3. The benefits of committing to it (as opposed to 'keeping options open' which is no strategy at all) are that you can draft an initial team for 3-4 weeks only and with no regard to long-term structure.

              4. This means I don't need to bother with teams who have new managers or with players new to the PL. I can get them before GW4 if they look right. This eliminates some of the guesswork.

              5. I can also use the opportunity to engineer an early BB (which I will probably play in GW1). I don't want the BB compromising my 2 actual wildcards but ideally I'd like unlimited transfers to set up for it. By committing to a GW4 wildcard I can use my initial selection for that purpose and know I won't be stuck for very long with a sub-optimal squad structure.

              6. Some will say that I am getting less value for my BB if played outside a DGW. I say that I am preserving the (much greater) value of my 2nd wildcard by de-coupling it from the BB.

              7. If circumstances change, I will adapt my plan. But the mindset of 'keeping options open' is something I want to avoid, it is a recipe for mediocrity. 🙂

                    Counters.

1 - Your strongest argument. Cannot disagree here.
2 - Building TV can happen with a few quick transfers and if you pick well long enough. Infact the way i see it, there's a fair amount of congruence within teams have a good first 3 and a good first 6. I'm picking my team based on the first 3 and ignorning Everton assets whose fixtures pick up GW3. Also, i think to maximise TV, a GW2 wc is better than a GW3 wc. Movement for prices is infact very slow in the international break IIRC.
3 - Your long term structure won't be very far off from your short term if you get your big hitters right. You have to work towards this. What i do to keep the flexibility is get the right price brackets. For example, Costa/Michy/Lukaku are not the most appealing options to me but they will be my second striker place holder so that i can jump on a Sturridge/Kane/Vardy/Ibra if they hit form. Same with KdB and the Mahrez/Sanchez bracket. Hence i instead of 'committing' to a wildcard get my structure right so that i'm as flexible as possible. Infact i do a lot of permutations in terms of how 2 transfers can help me jump onto 2 appropriate attackers if options emerge.
4 - If you pay enough attention here you could get the price changers in GW1. (This is why i'm with your short term strategy). I'm trying to place my bets on players most likely to get a haul irrespective of new manager or not. I got lucky with Michu and a Fulham striker gw1 3 years ago and want to try scoring that luck here.
5 - Great point. Hadn't thought about it. My argument though is I'll still probably hold it for the second half of the season because i want to build some TV so that my bench is actually a good one.
                    7 - As long as you aren't stubborn i'm okay. 🙂

I'm not sure I can argue with any of that - maybe no. 7 to a degree - like I say, stubborness is bad so flexibility is very necessary.

However, my 'plan' would be to possibly take no more than a couple of hits early doors and still end up with the basis of the team that everyone is wildcarding to. This seems to me advantageous over throwing the WC in too early. Of course, this means I have to make some pretty good selections for my GW1 team which is easier said than done. But my backup plan to this would be to WC if I need more than a few hits, so this leaves me no worse off. I am then protected against injury crisis and can take advantage of fixture swings later in the first half of the season.

Another variable that does need to be considered is my minileague. It's also a massive advantage to me if I can see what others in the minileague have wildcarded to - again it comes with a risk as their WC, if played well, will give them an advantage as far as score goes. So here's also a valid reason to maybe wait.

Yes. I'm not saying that my strategy is the only valid one. I think the benefits outweigh the disadvantages but without the benefit of 20/20 hindsight no-one can know for sure.

I agree about stubbornness. A FPL manager needs to be reactive as well as strategic. But that doesn't mean having no strategy at all - which 'keeping options open' often amounts to. Options are open anyway. 🙂

It's a bold strategy for sure, I'm quite intrigued by the idea. Two issues I have with GW1 BB: first, it allows no margin of error with respect to GW1 starters, and I think it's reasonable to expect a surprise or two; second, I'm not quite sure how big of a wildcard-compromising factor post-wildcard BB is--it's definitely something worth looking into since it's such a widely used strategy.

Personally, I'm leaning towards coupling an early wildcard with an AOA in GW1. This will allow the inclusion of (at least) one 4m defender who need not even play, and a 4m keeper while spending the extra funds for a very strong front 8. Going back to the first point above, with GW1 BB you can't really risk having, say, Wilson or Jakupovic in your squad. Besides, I haven't been able to figure out a better time to use AOA anyways...

Clearly nobody would wildcard on a certain ham week if they didn't need to....even if they planned to pre season. I plan to wildcard week 3 every season and usually end up doing it week 1 or 2. Win my mini league most years and finished in top 600 last year so......

Agree completely. Stubbornness is the enemy of the FPL Manager and to stubbornly state you're going to WC in a certain week would definitely fall in to that category for me. But I do think between GWs 3 and 4 is not necessarily a bad time to do it because of fixture changes. But I'm with you - I'll make that decision in GW3 and not before.

Apart from Courtois and Jak (use Heatster) and Evans (use McCauley) it's a decent stab.

Got my first draft together. It seems a wee bit different to others on here

    Foster / Jaku
    Terry / Stones / Shaw / Friend / Evans
    Cazorla / Cesc / Ayew / Middelsborough midfieder @ 5.5 / Højbjerg
    Kun / Ibra / Lukaku

Obviously toploaded, but have tried to fill the mid wth 3 'seasoned performers' who should tick over

I have 0.5 ITB - Cazorla could be the one to make way if fiddling, as Arsenals fixtures are hardly gold, but he's a cracking differential, who's well rested .

    Any thoughts?

To be honest, while i like going for differentials I wouldn't start off with so many. A lot of those players are rotation risk (Terry, Stones, Caz, Fab, Højbjerg). All could well be regular starters but with new managers etc it's hard to tell.

Put that alongside a pretty weak midfield puts me off. I would downgrade Lukaku at the very least and upgrade a midfielder.

Lamela would be if we could get any confirmation he's nailed. Played well towards the end of the season.

Pedro is interesting due to price tag, but he didn't really do anything to warrant a place on our teams last season besides a flash in the pan here or there. I find Hazard @10, Fabregas @7.5 and Costa @ 9.5 much more interesting for my Chelsea slots than him.

Cazorla depends if he's playing deep, and how his role evolved when all the senior players are back. If deployed further upfield it definitely boosts his appeal. He's also on penalties. If in the double pivot however It's not too my liking.

I'm fully advocating having Aguero and Zlatan up front so I'm having to find value elsewhere. I think all three could be interesting and need monitoring. Fabregas certainly an alternative but was thinking Pedro might thrive under the new manager.

    Morning all.

Be good to hear some thoughts on MID picks. I've currently got Haz-Mkhi and Capoue (5th) and have 15 to spend. What's the best play:

    A) Another premium (9.5 Mah or Ozil?)) plus a 5.5 (Gradel/Ibe or maybe J Allen now as cheaper option)
    B) Eriksen (or Alli?) plus Townsend/Deflofeu?
    C) Two 7.5 (Siggy/Ayew plus Barkley/Tadic?)

    Thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

I kinda like having a 6.0m - 5.5m - 5.0m - 4.5m so it's easy to transfer someone in on a 1-to-1 replacement, if they become bandwagon, if that makes sense.

Sometimes saves on a second transfer to find an extra 0.5m

Yeah, I just reckon I'll be trying to fix my mids/forwards in the first few weeks. It takes a while for clean sheets to become apparent.

          I like 5.5 - 5.0 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5/4.0

How does the rest of your team look with remaining budget?

Chelsea getting Kante and selling Matic - good move or bad move?

I would actually want us to keep Matic. Matic, Fabregas and Kante are all very different players and one of the best when it comes to their strengths.

None will sit on the bench, imo.

Yes and lack of Europe games also means that we will play less number of games than we usually do, not a lot of scope for rotation.

Fabregas' role is unclear right now, but I can see Conte wanting to play him as he likes his players to drop balls into the striker's path and Fabregas does that brilliantly.

Matic on the other hand had a very bad season, although the ability is still there. I really don't know what plans Conte has for the midfield particularly in the center. Also, Hazard.

It's good. No CL football so no need for rotation, if they do get it next season I can see them struggling without backup for Kante.

In this boat too. As good as Kante was last year, Matic was better in Chelsea's title winning season I think. Plus Matic has proved it at CL level too.

Yep, choose one from each that you would pick. Think Redmond could be a bargain

If Arnautovic does sign for Everton then I would be tempted to go for this midfield to start the season.
    Mkhitaryan/Tadic/Ayew/Arnautovic
    Plus a 4.5

    Hows this for a draft?

    Foster Jakupovic
    Friend Paredes Shaw Coleman Macauley
    Mkhitaryan Hazard Bolasie Firmino Hojbjerg
    Costa Wilson Kun

I like it, very good structure which makes it easier to move pieces around when needed. Poeple forget how crucial that is at the start of the season.

That being said, Bolasie and Firmino are the question marks for me. Otherwise good effort.

Zaba will probably start the season so if he does well i think it's his place to lose. But for now, Sagna is ahead of him.

All the French/Portugese players are still on break and haven't featured in pre season, put that together with Sagna's age I think he's sure to miss the first few games.

Zaba is more attacking than Sagna as well which i think Pep likes so perhaps he will be first choice the whole season with a fair bit of rotation.

Mert's out aswell? who does that leave? Chambers? Oh dear. Arsenal's defense is usually pretty shoakey at the start of the season & that's at the best of times but with their three recognised CBs out? I'm tempted to double up on Pool' attack now.

I'm going for an early wildcard before Gameweek 4 during the international break so here's my team set up for the first 3 -

    Hart-4.0
    Shaw-Friend-Souare-Evans-4.0
    KDB-Mahrez-Mkhi-Ayew-Capoue
    Aguero-Long-Negredo

I usually find myself as a very conservative FPL player who almost NEVER needs his wildcard (I didnt use one of my two last season) so I'm trying to get ahead in the first 3 weeks and once the season kicks in properly, we have more info on line ups, bandwagons start to appear and Payet, Ozil etc. are back, I'll just watch my Value soar.

Remember, RMT only for the first 3 weeks.

Fischer is a good pick imo, but think we need to see a lot more from Sunderland to know if Watmore will play

    Rate my team please

    Foster - Jakupovic

    Shaw - Dann - Mori - Pieters - Amat

    Mane - Ayew - Hazard - Tadic - Watson

    Gray - Kun - Lukaku

    Thought please.

      Mane not a certain staerter.

Watson not certain (although who cares?)

I don't like Gray. Prefer Wilson or Long/Austin.

      Good balance though.
