Pre-Season

Sleeper – Cesc Fabregas

After three successful seasons with Barcelona, Cesc Fabregas’ return to the top-flight proved pivotal to Chelsea’s 2014/15 title-winning campaign.

Snapped up by Jose Mourinho after former club Arsenal opted against reacquiring him, the playmaker delivered three goals and 19 assists in his first year at Stamford Bridge to leap back into Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers’ plans.

Chelsea’s disastrous defence of their Premier League crown in 2015/16 forced a reassessment.

The Blues simply failed to rediscover their cutting edge and despite replacing Mourinho with Guus Hiddink midway through the season, their big-hitters proved a bitter disappointment.

Having earned just two assists in the first 20 Gameweeks, Fabregas racked up five goals and as many assists in the final 18 rounds of fixtures but it was a case of too little, too late for the Spaniard.

Although he ultimately collected just 133 points, Fabregas was still only two points off Willian as the top-scoring Chelsea player in FPL and comfortably bettered Eden Hazard’s tally of 104 points, despite the latter’s late run of four goals in the final five fixtures.

The Prospects

Last term aside, there can be no doubting Fabregas’ potential as a consistent Fantasy asset.

Indeed, the 2015/16 campaign was the first time in his last seven active Premier League seasons that the playmaker has failed to provide at least ten assists.

Even when adding in last term’s tally, Fabregas has racked up 98 assists over that time frame – that’s an average of 14 assists per season.

Considering that reliable output, Fabregas’ price of 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League may well prove to be a bargain if he can remain a regular starter under new manager Antonio Conte.

With N’Golo Kante on board, Conte’s preferred formation is likely to dictate how we assess the Chelsea midfield. Conte had utilised a 4-2-4 in pre-season but switched to 4-1-4-1 for the Frenchman’s debut against AC Milan, with the new boy screening in front of the Blues’ back-four.

The 4-2-4 is perhaps the less enticing of the two. Kante certainly looks nailed on, which would leave Fabregas, Oscar and Nemanja Matic battling it out for the role alongside the former Leicester ball-winner.

Clearly, the latter formation offers Conte more scope with his central midfield selection and could allow Fabregas to benefit from Kante’s energy, affording him the freedom to dictate matters in the centre of the park.

Identically priced to the Spain international, Oscar is another contender who could also play his way into consideration. The Brazilian netted twice against Milan in midweek – including a converted spot-kick whilst Hazard was on the pitch – and, having started just 20 times last term, will be looking to establish himself as a viable option under the Italian.

Chelsea’s lack of European commitments – due to their tenth placed finish in 2015/16 – also limits the likelihood of rest and rotation this time around and affords Conte the chance to make his stamp on the Blues’ starting XI.

At present, Hazard’s two goals as a sub in a recent friendly against Real Madrid suggests the Belgian is gearing up for a revival under Conte. Should he be utilised through the middle – as he was against Madrid – there’s every chance that the former Lille man will emerge as the most enticing option at Stamford Bridge.

Nonetheless, Fabregas – who is currently owned by 8% of FPL managers – cannot be overlooked. Granted, he doesn’t have the same explosive potential as Hazard but, if he secures a place in Conte’s first XI plans, history suggests he could make a mockery of that very kind price tag.

I had a bit of a moment today when I looked at my team and realized I only have 5 players from teams that I figure will be in the top 6-8.

That got me thinking, should we go for good team coverage or fixture coverage?

Doesn't really matter, there are still high performing players in teams that don't finish top 8. Two defenders from big teams, 2 mids and a forward are more than enough. IMHO of course

Ayew if Swansea fail in their bids to get a striker..
      Otherwise Tadic 🙂

Keep an eye out for Oscar as an unlikely-to-be-nailed on option too.

Okay, so its finally FPL time again! I have been on football vacation and my knowledge of pre-season form and such is a bit lacking atm. I have also stayed as far away from the comment sections as possible to not fall into the "sheep-herd" mentality this year. I have, however, read through the scout articles on the potential of different players in all the categories and this is what I have come up with as a first draft:

    Cech Jakupovich
    Stones Friend Evans Souare 4.0
    KDB Hazard Tadic Deulofeu Fletcher
    Aguero Giroud Gray

That leaves me 0,5 ITB for when I'm out partying and hungover notice I've missed all the price rises 😀 Thoughts on improvements?

Cheers! Yeah might look at trying to upgrade one of the mid's. The reason behind the current picks is because:-

Siggy will be on pens and will be one of Swansea's main points scorers (but that does depend on how well the swans preform)

Oscar seems to be in favour with the new manager and has also shown some good form... plus is now on pens (I think Hazard is too over-priced, and there is no other midfield options which I like from Chelsea)

Barkley I have a feeling will preform well this season, however this might be the one that I will try and upgrade

Redmond is OOP as it looks like he will be playing upfront now (confirmed by the manager), so I thought for 6m he could be worth a shout

...and watson is just for the bench lol.

No need for the selection headache, especially with the 5th defender.

It is helpful to have a playing keeper to cover for injuries or rotation, though I have flip flopped between having a solid #1 with a bench fodder 4.0 (DDG + McCarthy last year) and it didn't turn out much different in points than the 4.5 rotation pair from past years.

Two solid defenders that play every week with a rotating pair and a 15th player that doesn't play (or need to be thought about) is the best way to start the year. A couple cheap playing 4.0's will emerge over the year and you can WC them in when needed.

I meant a 5.5 mid that should be in your FPL team most weeks

      Snodgrass - nailed
      Ramirez - nailed
      Fischer - nailed
Ibe - club record signing, likely to play
      Gradel - nailed
      Davis - nailed
Feghouli - nailed until Lanzini is back

Is Davis nailed, in fact? Fischer too, I haven't seen any conclusive sign that he would be nailed on.

And I have bad memories that Ramirez is mostly nailed to the hospital bed.

I would imagine so, he's far better than JWP and Romeu.

Really not sure about Fischer (or Middlesbrough in general) tbf..

Haha yeah heard he's a bit of a liability 😛

Cheers, between Fischer, Gradel and Feghouli for me. Gun to your head - who would you go with?

1 shot per game, what's the attraction?

Had the worst season of his career last season due to that horrific injury.. He came back but wasn't fully fit imo.

With a preseason under his belt and with ACON* coming up, he'll want to hit the ground running, did very well in France.

Plus Bournemouth are very attacking, unlike Middlesbrough.

*are Ivory Coast in the ACON?

Damarai Gray at 5.0 could even be an option! If he starts in the community shield he is one to look at

      After last night Kouyate!

I like Leko, if he can nailed down a starting role.

Don't love Cabaye. Better attacking options on Palace.

      Rooney :O

cabaye semi solid fk and corners. finished 6.4 last season and 6 now and palace have a nice few fixtures ive had zaha bolasi and townsend all in and dif times but keep going back to cabaye. Rooney a tough one I support utd and I think I just want him to do well cause of all the hate he gets

Alternating Bolasie/Gradel/Feghouli as a 5th midfielder with a third striker (Wilson, Gray, Negredo) ?

Offensive rotation (especially with 4 players) is way too frustrating for me. Nailed on to always pick the wrong guy to bench.

    A. Hazard & Ericksen

    or

    B. Kane & Fabregas

Please don't say "one is a midfielder and one is a striker"
