The Stock Check – Gameweek 1 – Sunday

A stunning performance from Philippe Coutinho at the Emirates overshadows even Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Premier League debut as Liverpool hit four in Arsenal’s backyard. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches.

On the Rise

Philippe Coutinho
We thought the debate on Jurgen Klopp’s midfield was settled. However, Coutinho’s display at the Emirates already threatens to change matters and have us reconsider Roberto Firmino as our top target.

Coutinho simply sparkled, fetching a pair of breathtaking goals and is likely to end the Gameweek as the leading points scorer. He is already officially first transfer bandwagon having soared to the top of the “transfers in” ranks.

Worryingly, he limped off in the second-half having dealt the damage, although Jurgen Klopp has since confirmed that his withdrawal was caused by cramp rather than a hamstring injury.

We’ve always had concerns on Coutinho’s consistency as an FPL asset but should he profit from the trip to Burnlye in Gameweek 2, he will already become difficult to ignore.

Sadio Mane
Mane also came out of the Arsenal victory with plaudits. A superb solo effort capped an effervescent performance and offered a reminder of his explosive qualities. Mane looked at home in Klopp’s line-up on the right of a front three and, like Coutinho, if he delivers again at Burnley, his stock will close further on Firmino.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
It was almost inevitable that Ibrahimovic would score on his Premier League debut. Again, the Swede often dropped deep at Bournemouth and both his attempts on goal were from outside the box. That won’t bother his 42% ownership or the 21% who handed him the Gameweek captaincy.

Wayne Rooney
While Ibrahimovic will get more attention, the United skipper emerged from the Vitality Stadium with a goal in a busy display of some promise. We’re not convinced just yet but, based on these early signs, it’s possible that Rooney could outperform his 9.0 price tag.

Anthony Martial
Another stand-out performer in Jose Mourinho’s ranks – Martial looked sharp and positive on the left-flank and came out with two assists and a share of the maximum bonus. With Henrikh Mkhitaryan used from the bench once again, if Paul Pogba’s raids are curtailed by a role in the double pivot, Martial could yet be the most attractive of the United midfield.

Antonio Valencia
Once again the Ecuadorian offered far more going forward than Luke Shaw on the opposite flank, confirming that he is our favoured route into the United backline. Eric Bailly was impressive but Valencia’s quality going forward is enough to keep him firmly in place at the top of of Watchlist, despite United’s failure to earn a shut-out.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
Let’s not panic. However, there’s no doubt that the performances of Coutinho and Mane took a nibble out of our confidence in Firmino. It’s possible that we have to live with every Liverpool midfield asset taking turns to come to the fore. However, if Klopp’s side win at Burnley in Gameweek 2, Firmino really needs to get amongst the points to restore our faith.

The Arsenal Defence
The injury troubles were well publicised and we expected today’s encounter to test Arsenal’s resolve. However, the nature of the Liverpool performance indicated that it could take several weeks for Arsene Wenger to restore stability. Hector Bellerin at 6.5 and with 30% ownership already looks a liability.

Alberto Moreno
If it wasn’t clear that James Milner was Klopp’s first choice at left-back heading into today’s game, Moreno’s performance at Arsenal fixed that. The Spaniard’s desperate lunge on Theo Walcott went unpunished when the penalty was saved but, just a minute later, Moreno was exposed for Arsenal’s opener. He is surely destined for cameo roles this season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Negredo or Carroll (depending on how he looks tomorrow) might not be a bad move. Looks slightly weak upfront with unfavourable fixtures for Gray and Long.

Tadic had a very good game and should be amongst the points soon. If you're set on getting Ibra I do prefer this move to the Firmino/Coutinho one but I don't think you should be taking a hit for Zlatan right now. Kane could easily outscore him next week.

Early thoughts on Kane vs Ibra for captain GW2 ? (assuming you don't go with Kun)

    Ibra :
+ Home debut for utd, on direct FKs as seen today, full BPS if he scores
+ Owned by 42% : second highest in the game
    - Sot'n have a solid defense, esp. if Fonte is back
    - Utd have a poor record against Soton at home in last couple of years (2/2 losses)

    Kane :
+ Still on penalties and averages 20.8 min per chance at home last season : highest among fwds except Aguero : so you know he will get chances.
+ Palace look poor and might lose what little creativity they have if Bolasie moves : Spurs should dominate
    - Does Janssen help or hinder Kane output ? Is the "Dembele effect" real ?
    - Lower ownership, 19% and many unlikely to captain him after this week, so even if he gets a haul and you don't captain him - you will climb in OR

True, but he produced the goods. He isn't the kind of striker that dominates a game -- he lies dormant most of the time, but still manages to score. He did the same thing against Leicester in the Community Shield.

Yeah all he needs is one moment in a game and its 9 FPL points in the bag.

I doubt if VvD and Fonte can be bullied off the ball and in the air as easily as most teams though. Although I did think the same about Wes Morgan before the Community Shield game too ..

2 shots, 2 shots on target, 1 goal, 2 big chances created, 3 bonus.

Away from home in his PL debut.

            Yeah he sucks! 😉

Good luck to those that go without him I say, lol.

Yeah he wasn't 'stand out great' today, but if Rooney had taken that 1 v 1 chance against Boruc, Ibra would have had an assist too. Great returns for a PL debut away, and encouraging signs for potential captainers

I actually thought Spurs looked pretty good -- they had a ton of energy going forward and created lots of chances, particularly in the 2nd half. Kane just wasn't involved in the attack. Lamela and Walker are the two best Spurs picks based on that first game.

          1. Enzo the Baker
            • 10 Years
            7 years, 10 months ago

Fair enough - yeah Lamela and Walker definitely look like the better picks at the moment.

I feel that Kane still presents a strong option though - Spurs doing well as a unit, inevitably means that he will get on the end of some chances. I am not sure how good/bad the Palace backline looked against Rondon and gang.

Agreed. If I had both, I'd wait until Kane produced the goods.

Nice GW by the way -- starting Capoue proved to be a stroke of genius.

I have Ibra, but if he hadn't scored I'd have gone Kane. He simply looked lazy at times.Vardy has 10x the work rate, and Aguero is somewhere in between, but definitely shades toward Vardy's effort level.

Aguero can often be seen strolling around then he bursts into action and the ball's in the back of the net. It's not lazy, it's lulling the defence into a false sense of security. I thought Ibra played really well today. Should've had an assist as well with a brilliant flick pass to Rooney

Too soon to say, I guess one strategy is to just stick with one of them for 4-5 weeks and you'll see returns like : 2, 15, 2, 2, 6 which still averages out okay.

I would probably never consider captaining any of Mane/Couti/Firm, so I don't minding the streaky unpredictable points.

It's nuts, really. Livermore made a great sliding block, and Vardy mishit one that actually was delivered sort of poorly from Musa. He easily could have had a brace, faces a shaky and slow Arsenal back line and then Swans--both at home--in the next two, and yet people are dumping him. (That said, as a Vardy owner I was gutted he didn't take the pen, and have to admit that it dents his long-term appeal.)

      Lamela Coutinho Deulofeu Hazard (Hojbjerg)

      Kun Ibra Gray

0 ITB, main worry is defense at the moment, stick with Cech or transfer him out? Willing to give Gray 2 - 3 more GWs

      Thanks!

        Arsenal are likely to concede.

Using a transfer on a GK after week 1 seems crazy. Don't forget the 'mare Cech had in GW1 last year. Be patient.

Exactly, I usually give my players about 3 weeks or so, but just worried about Arsenal's defense. Backup plan is to downgrade Cech to a 5.0 and upgrade Stones to a 5.5 (Walker, Clyne, etc..) but I'll stick at the moment.

I prefer playing Jakupovic instead of Cech this GW.

Have Alli & Tadic over Lamela & Redmond :(. Any same owners, how do you feel

        Eriksen and Tadic here.

Obviously far from ideal, but one week is a small sample size. Tadic was very lively I thought.

Eriksen and Tadic 🙁 I even had Lamela + Redmond but swapped teams on the day. Oh well, Tadic + Eriksen should outscore in the long run.

I went Lamela and Redmond over Eriksen and Tadic and would almost double up on Tadic based on reports of game

I think Kingsley will keep his place in the Swansea defence long term as well as Amat.

        Kingsley also will get assists.

Yes, particularly given their fixtures. You also might want to wait on Cout's status. I know it's "just" a cramp, but cramps can easily turn into strained muscles that you don't rush back from.

Not if you think both will score points.

If they continue to play like they just did then it's very possible two Liverpool attacking assets could deliver regularly and be a good option.

I'm feeling a save of the transfer this GW. Was 53 all out this GW.
      What're your thoughts?

      Foster
      Stones / Valencia / Friend
      Firmino / Lamela / Deulofeu / Tadic
      Ibra / Kun / Gray

      Heaton / Capoue / Morgan / Pieters

Suprised at how low Terry's ownership is. 4.7%. Thought he was a bargain myself at 5.5, considering Conte's pre-season praise.

Think Zouma will take Cahill's spot personally. But the WC is always there as a fall back if Terry is indeed dropped.

Yep, I agree. But he'll have to play well to keep his spot with Cahill at least being capable.

Terry seems perfect for how Conte likes to set his defence up. But we'll see. I factored in that risk when selecting my other defenders.

I don't think Conte will drop him; he's a leader of the team and Conte has gotten good defensive performances out of old players before. The reason I stayed away is because a lot of Chelsea fans had said that the defense looked like crap in preseason and they think they won't be all that solid at the back early on.

Couldn't resist WHM, wat, BUR early on. Think there's a good chance of a couple cleanies there. Chelsea looked extremely solid against Liverpool in preseason, but didn't pay much attention to their other matches to be honest. Just think Kante and Conte will tighten things up fairly quickly.
