Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 3

On a busy transfer deadline day, we bring the curtain down on Gameweek 3, pondering the prospects of City’s renaissance man, whilst surveying the options in the light of yesterday’s FA bombshell.

The Player

Alexis Sanchez deserves a mention but, for his continued ascent under Pep Guardiola, we have to doff our caps to Raheem Sterling.

Having simmered with a pair of assists in his opening two Gameweeks, Sterling’s contribution in Sunday’s win over West Ham United was emphatic.

An extra yard of pace, a renewed willingness to take on his defender – Sterling was already rekindling past performances from his bygone Liverpool days.

Now with two goals to his name, the City wide man will surely be flowing with confidence ahead of the biggest stage of all – a Manchester derby.

We should have reservations when discussing what is still a developing talent.

Sterling can go missing, he could quickly swing back to mediocrity but the underlying numbers and the role he’s playing in Guardiola’s system certainly provide room for optimism.

Now priced at 8.2 and rising, Sterling’s form is out of the bag and the masses have caught on.

Experienced heads may resist being turned by a unpredictable talent, but Sterling appears to be key component of Guardiola’s plans and in a fluid attacking system, is producing statistics to rival even the top bracket strikers.

The Team

After picking up one point in the first two Gameweeks, Arsenal finally found their mojo with a 3-1 destruction of Watford on Saturday.

Alexis Sanchez’ 16-point return, courtesy of a goal and two assists, served a timely reminder of his talents as the Gunners prepare for an inviting run of fixtures that will surely invite investment.

Mesut Ozil also notched at Vicarage Road and looks the likeliest to rival Sanchez for our affections. His consistency on his way to a 19 assist return last season is still fresh in our memory – he’s the plodding Fantasy talent to Sanchez’ explosive but unpredictable returns.

In a season where new grappling laws have already boosted the number of spot-kicks, Santi Cazorla – as evidenced on Saturday – may also emerge as a viable option if, as expected, he cements his start.

Then we’ve got the impact of new signing Lucas Perez to consider – a potentially intriguing option as an 8.5 forward.

Suddenly the Arsenal attack is alive.

At the back, there’s also room for optimism, with fellow new boy Shkodran Mustafi expected to shore up an uncertain and unsettled rearguard.

We remain sceptical on their title credentials given the strength of the opposition gathering, but Wenger’s side are certainly back on the radar as a source of Fantasy talent.

That begins in Gameweek 4, where Sanchez and Ozil present viable captain options.

The Talking Point

Whilst deadline day is a major distraction, news of Sergio Aguero’s FA charge for an “alleged” act of violent conduct is still sinking in.

It seems likely that the charge will be upheld and that Aguero will accepted a three-match ban which will see him sit out the Manchester derby and the Gameweek 5 Etithad clash with Bournemouth.

His 51% ownership must now consider their options.

Benching Aguero over the next two Gameweeks is one route available, but having his funds in reserve is surely debilitating when there will be those re-investing his millions back into their squads.

In addition, Aguero’s price will likely drop, possibly by 0.3 or more by the time he returns for Gameweek 6. By benching him, we would be turning down an easy route to making perhaps 0.2 in funds; even that little could prove precious over the season.

The Wildcard looks the way to go. Without it we can swap out the Argentine but we can’t maximise the funds he liberates without a second free transfer or by taking a points hit.

With a Wildcard active, Aguero’s cash can be used to perhaps land Diego Costa or Romelu Lukaku, with change available to upgrade a mid-price midfielder to either Sanchez or Ozil.

That’s an intoxicating possibility that’s hard to resist which perhaps also offers up a new Gameweek 4 captaincy option.

The only danger is that we will get used to having Aguero’s funds distributed throughout our squads, paving the way for us to start questioning re-acquiring the Argentine for Gameweek 6.

    Wc team

    Stekelenburg / jaku
    Valencia/collins/mcauley/mee/amat
    Hazard/Barkley/ozil/sterling/capoue
    Zlatan/costa/stuani

    Week 6
    Costa > kun
    Barkley > lanzini (possibly feghouli)

    Look good?
Funds will be tight for lanzini but aguero at 12.9 and a Barkley .1 rise should see it work

Isn't this literally extensively giving out the Opta data from Members Area, since you give pretty much all of the players data from this season? That at least used to be against our contract with FFS.

Spurs cooling their interest in Sissoko. Newcastle demanding £30m, no way he is worth that.

My point was obviously that Bolasie isn't worth £32 - but these are prices paid in PL today. Which in fact makes me think that the likes of Wenger have not woken up to the reality that the the high looking prices demanded for really good players are not too much, but almost bargains compared to how much you pay for the second and third row.

Hard to say with Sissoko. That player in France wasn't the one we've been watching.

ManU payed a billion for Pogba...Sissoko is almost as good

So 30 for Sissoko is not bad, if he plays like he did for France

      1. Camp No No
        • 10 Years

Sissoko isn't half as good as Pogba, and his performances for France are hugely overrated. What he did to get that hype, was that he repeatedly exploited the space arranged by great off the ball runs by his team mates (including Pogba) by taking a run in that space with the ball (the good part), and taking a selfish shot from too far (the bad part).

Only Swansea & Chelsea have tougher fixtures over the next 8 games. Doubling up has worked so far but times are changing.

Should Azpi owners be concerned by the arrival of marcos alonso ?

In the ned, if Chelsea does not sign a CB, Terry might be the most nailed defender of the back four and the cheapest too (with good goaling records too)

No, Azpi is their best full-back and they have no European football to worry about.

    Goalkeeper question;

    The best £4m option.

With Hull landing a keeper and Sunderland failing to land a keeper is Pickford the best option until January or will Jaku keep his place after the last few performances?

I'll only believe Sunderland haven't landed a keeper shortly after midnight

That said, I hope they don't - need Pickford to free up cash

If Sunderland don't get a keeper, then yes Pickford. I reckon they will though.

I see a lot of people who have on the whole really good teams.... full of the likes of Ibra, Negredo, Barkley, Hazard, Tadic/Redmond, Sterling, Shaw, Azpi Heason/Fos...... with not much more than some housekeeping to do playing their wildcards.

Obviously Kun has driven 'everybody' to reshape their team but if you have a decent team already.... is it not far better to make a straight swap for the next best option whoever that maybe (kane/teckers/lukaku/giroud) and save the wildcard for a really rainy day or use with a chip?

I know a lot iof people plan to use wildcard in the international break to set up with a template for the next half dozen gameweeks or so, but I can see a lot of people struggle to get Kun back in on return without hits.

I know you miss out on Ozil/Sanchez etc but for me the wildcard based on Kun alone is not the way forward (If you have a decent team anyway)

Enjoying looking at all the WC teams though

Honestly, it depends on your individual situation. If Aguero is your only issue, then don't WC. Your plan for a straight swap works well.

Lots who are WCing have multiple issues. Aguero, poor midfield, rotation issues etc.

You might be right. A lot of teams are wildcarding when they don't have to, and saving the early one to get Kun back after suspension might be the best way to go.

I planned to wildcard at this stage of the season before it even started though, and bans for Aguero, Grat etc just confirmed my decision.

Another who to replace Aguero with post:

I've got Barkley so don't want to double up on Eveton and get Lukaku
I've got Hazard so don't want to double up on Chelsea and get Costa
I've got Ibra so don't want to double up on Man U and get Rooney

So who best for a stright swap for the 2 GWs?
    A) Vardy
    B) Kane
    C) ?

If Sunderland lose Kone, fail to pick up a second keeper and don't get a decent mid, they're going to really struggle. Sending Lens out on loan just to reduce the wage bill, and with the guy plainly wanting to stay, is going to look stupid.

Moyes is clueless, nothing more than a steady job at Everton over a long period of time. He is finished.

Never won a trophy, nothing more than steady and consistent with a team he spent years working with. You won't see Moyes doing anything else in management worth talking about.
