Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Arsenal somehow manage to avoid a third consecutive Champions League opening defeat while Manchester City’s match (and the transport network) fall foul of the weather on a stormy night in every sense of the word.

Sanchez snatches point for Gunners

A 77th-minute strike from Alexis Sanchez (11.0) gave Arsenal a point they barely deserved from their Champions League opener in Paris.

Possession, attempts and shots on target stats might have been almost even, but the hosts were markedly the better side and should have won easily if not for their profligacy in front of goal.

The chief culprit was Edinson Cavani, who opened the scoring after just 42 seconds and then want on to waste three further chances as Arsenal struggled to find any rhythm throughout a torrid first half.

Arsene Wenger made three changes from the side that beat Southampton on Saturday, with Sanchez and Alex Iwobi (5.8) replacing Lucas Perez (8.5) and Theo Walcott (7.5), with the Chilean playing up front.

More surprisingly, Wenger opted for David Ospina (4.9) over Petr Cech (5.5) in goal. It was a purely tactical choice, the Frenchman insisted, which will be a relief for the 16.9% of Fantasy Premier League managers who own Cech – the third most popular keeper in the game.

“I have two world-class goalkeepers. I can give them both games. If they do not play, you can’t keep two world-class goalkeepers. But we have an in-house rule that the keepers know. It’s important to have clear rules like that. They know what the rules are for the season and, if they change, I’ll tell them. It’s down to performances whether he stays in the team but, on what he delivered tonight, David has the right to stay in the team for the next Champions League game.” – Arsene Wenger

Walcott’s omission, meanwhile, was precautionary for what Wenger described as a ‘very short term’ knee problem.

Arsenal, who looked porous at the back all night, improved after the break, but it took the introduction of Olivier Giroud (9.0) to change the course of the match. The move meant a return to the left flank for Sanchez and he thrived in that more familiar role, firing home a rebound from an Iwobi shot.

It’s two goals and as many assists in his last pair of starts now for Sanchez – he currently sits third in this week’s Captain Poll ahead of a trip to a Hull side that have conceded an attempt on goal every 4.6 minutes so far, quicker than any other side.

Giroud is yet to start a match this season, and he won’t be doing that in the Champions League any time soon having been sent off for a second bookable offence following a clash with Marco Verratti. That, conversely, could improve the striker’s domestic minutes if Wenger looks to rotate his squad for future European ties.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Monreal, Koscielny, Mustafi, Bellerin, Coquelin (Xhaka 71), Ozil (Elneny 85), Cazorla, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Giroud 63), Iwobi, Sanchez.

Pep’s European bow washed away

Torrential rain and a lightning storm that struck down Manchester’s tram network put paid to Pep Guardiola’s first group stage match as City boss.

There was time, however, to at least announce the team, with a number of decisions giving some pointers ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Bournemouth.

As expected, Sergio Aguero (13.0) was given the nod up front but remains banned domestically, while the in-form Kevin De Bruyne (10.5) continued in midfield despite limping off towards the end of the Manchester derby with what the local press had reported as cramp through fatigue.

Guardiola went for Aleksandar Kolarov (5.9) and Pablo Zabaleta (4.9) as his full-backs, which could indicate that Bacary Sagna and Gael Clichy (both 5.4) are being lined up to start versus Bournemouth.

And Nolito (9.0) was replaced by Jesus Navas (6.4), again suggesting that the Celta Vigo signing is being preserved for a run at the Cherries.

The tie was re-scheduled to this evening, leaving City with just two full days to prepare for the Bournemouth fixture, and Guardiola might well shuffle his pack further as a result.

Man City XI: Bravo, Zabaleta, Otamendi, Stones, Kolarov, Fernandinho, Navas, De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling, Aguero.

I think attempting to get Kun back in without using a WC is looking like a priority for me now. It also forces me to focus on a patient approach and think longer term about my squad instead of chasing short term performance or price rises. But I will admit having a WC in my pocket and imagining how I can use it every week has been fun. Still delayed gratification and all that. Anyone feel the same?

Im on my wc after a disastrous 25 point gw and i think i'm very likely to go both ibra and aggy less and do you know what, it feels damn good! I am sick of being held hostage by aguero and now ibra and the fun was being sucked out of the game for me trying to build a team around them and one of haz/sanch in mid etc.

Ditching them, my team looks loads better and I feel enthused again!

End of the day you can only cap one of Ibra/Aggy so as long as the cash saved on one of them can be spent elsewhere one one maybe two better players who will hopefully make up the 5-10 points you may lose out on from Ibra for example.

That said, i'm going without both of them and spreading the cash around the whole team.

It'll work or it won't. Live by the sword, die by the sword!

You can see the gameweeks which he could probably be rotated (one gameweek before and after the UCL game), and have a 4th 4.5 def who has good fixtures in those to cover it up for Walker

It means Pochettino, who favoured a similar 11 from week-to-week during their title challenge last term, expects Son and others on the fringes of the first team to feature more regularly. “We need to be conscious that we have a tough season ahead with the Champions League and different cups, and the Premier League is tough,” the Argentinian added.
“The depth of the squad is very important, they have to fight for a place in the starting 11; with seven games in 23 days, we need all the players ready to compete and play.”

Would you do Vardy to Lukaku this week? Both excellent fixtures but Lukaku cheaper price will allow me Barkley to Firmino next week. Just seems daft to sell Vardy this week though but a 0.1 increase on Lukaku means Firmino cant be afforded. Surely a wise move then right? And just play Barkley this week at home to Boro?

But I read somewhere that Stoke generally don'y concede headed goals, do they?

They haven't been that Stoke for a while tbh, and Teke can easily score with his feet too. Safe option is Ibra, this weeks Lukaku could well be Tekkerz

I agree tbh. Thought he had a case of the Sterlings, didn't seem to have the confidence to take on his man. With City now playing on Wednesday Pep might want to rotate a bit though.

Sanchez no, and Aguero could do, but I'm not so sure. 85% at the moment.

It is, I rate him highly in terms of talent but his mentality I'm not sure on. Could become world class (City really wanted him just a year or two back after all) United have chased him since he was young too!

In my mini leagues I can see plenty of rivals who haven't planned getting him back, so I hope he's fit and firing. I'll have an easy free move to bring him back with the rest of my team sorted. Hoping my rivals go without for a gameweek or two while I rake in the points

Ibra or Lukaku, the safe captaincy aguero offers trumps all other players. All those big hitting midfielders blank a lot, how confident are you that each week you'll pick the right one? The two favourites blanked this week (Haz, Sanchez) whereas aguero will score points no matter what

If you're going without them this side looks as good as any. i'd just somehow get KDB in instead of Sterling. Think come the end of the season he will have brought in some serious points.

Yeah I can see it being more interesting if a bit petrifying whenever United or City are playing. I just think you've probably got a bit too much in defence when you're still realistically only going to play 3 of them. If you're going Ibra & Kun less that midfield really needs to beefy.

looks ok for the next GW at least, long as you have a quick n easy plan to get Aguero back in the team. If Costa and Lukau continue to score on a par with Zlatan, then you won't miss him

Still radio silence on this Gray situation. I'm guessing the Burnley camp is waiting to hear back from the FA so maybe he sneaks through another week. Gotta get rid though pretty soon irregardless as their fixtures during Oct are a Murderer's Row.

Good shout, I lost Mane on my WC pre GW4 and he's the one player I'm most scared of not owning at the moment. Can see a hatty incoming

                                Current team:

                                Foster (Jaku)
                                Evans Shaw Stones (Friend Amat)
                                Hazard Alexis Barkley Redmond (Capoue)
                                Zlatan Kane Gray

1 FT and 0,0m in bank.

Save transfer or would you use the free transfer?

How are you getting Aguero back?

Barkley, Redmond and Gray are the weak links.

Kane and downgrade Barkley to Snodgrass/Puncheon

MGPT thinks the unthinkable - a season without Aguero.

Why can Capoue not be 4th mid? He's in great from, great fixtures. He's playing in a more advanced role than previously. I see some people having Snodgrass 4th mid instead but his fixtures in GW's 5,6,7 are poor and they will probably bench him and play Capoue anyway. Having Capoue now allows you to keep Haz and Ibra for now and get a playing front 7 of something like:

                                Hazard, Firmino, Antonio, Capoue
                                Aguero, Ibra, Lukaku

If after GW6 and GW7 he doesn't look like a good option anymore you can decide who to drop (Haz or Ibra most likely and upgrade your 5th mid to Snodgrass/whoever else)

Forgot to add Capoue was also scoring in pre season, which makes it less likely that he's a flash in the pan

He's not even that much more advanced than last season with Pereyra in the team, he just missed hundreds of chances last year.

Indeed. Something tells me that might not be entirely sustainable 🙂

He is genuinely a wonderful player to watch though.

Please could I have your opinions 🙂

                                Foster (Jaku)

                                Collins / Valencia / Stones

                                Sanchez / Hazard / Sterling / Antonio / Capoue

                                Lukaku (C) / Ibra

                                Jaku / Negredo / Amat / Friend

1FT and 0.3 ITB. Wanting to save that FT so i have 2 for next week to get Aguero back in (not sure who i'm losing to do that yet, will make that choice next week as who knows whats round the corner)
