The Digest – Gameweek 14

Alexis Sanchez breaks the rules, a five-star Spurs get drowned out and Sergio Aguero prepares to split the Fantasy Football community. We say goodbye to possibly the most extraordinary Gameweek of the season so far.

The Player

The policy is that no single player can claim this spot in consecutive articles but, such is the impact of Alexis Sanchez’ 23-point haul, there could be no denying the Chilean.

Arriving in the same Gameweek as Sergio Aguero’s dramatic capitulation, Sanchez has perhaps signalled a shift that will influence our entire seasons.

More on that in a moment.

For now, let’s revel in the brilliance of Sanchez, who seems to defy the modern theories of football and produce devastating performances when firmly stalking in “the red zone”.

He’s a player who, physically, appears to operate on a different plane.

He boasts an endurance and robust strength that can carry through match after match, bouncing off challenges and recovering from tweaks and niggles that perhaps would derail lesser talents.

On his current trajectory, it’s difficult to see Sanchez stalling.

Olivier Giroud remains a factor, but Arsene Wenger would be taking a risk turning to his “Plan B” option at this point. It might yet arrive over the busy festive schedule but, as of now, Sanchez looks to be a force of nature that can only punish us further should we attempt to resist.

Park the debate surrounding Eden Hazard – he remains a key figure ahead of Chelsea’s ridiculously obliging fixtures.

We need to find a way to accommodate both – a seemingly impossible task last month, now made all the more obtainable by Aguero’s misdemeanours.

The Team

In any other Gameweek, the performances and output of both Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane would have snatched the headlines.

Added to this, Son Heung-min sneaked back into form with a spectacular goal, backed by an assist.

With Mauricio Pochettino also claiming a sixth clean sheet in the demolition of Swansea City, it’s clear that we are dealing with a team that can provide solutions for our squads across all positions.

Harry Kane’s form is undeniable. Firing five goals in four outings since his return from injury, he has provided an all-too-convenient solution in the light of Aguero’s combustion. It’s no surprise to see his ownership and price ascending at pace.

But Eriksen and Son may just go unnoticed as a result.

Up until Gameweek 13, the Dane had been a frustrating figure who had failed to deliver on his impressive underlying numbers. But three goals and an assist in his past two Gameweek appearances have seen him bubble up.

Son could also enjoy a renaissance.

The South Korean has only this week stated that his recent form has been blighted by injury, a factor that may explain his decline in output leading to him slipping back under the radar.

Reduced to just 7.2 ahead of last weekend, Son has since enjoyed an increase in ownership and, while rotation could be a concern, he may yet present a profitable complimentary asset to Kane as our striker.

At the back, both Danny Rose and Kyle Walker remain mainstays.

Both could see rests in Gameweek 16, which could see us switch sights to a fit-again Toby Alderweireld.

Now down to 6.3, the Belgian is a class act, a likely ever-present and a menacing goal threat at set-pieces.

Alderweireld has big scores to come and, should he prove his fitness tonight or at Old Trafford on Sunday, he surely has to be a new target heading into the White Hart Lane meetings with Hull City and Burnley.

The Talking Point

We surely have to rethink our stance on Sergio Aguero.

Just as Diego Costa is a different beast, so it seems we are left to contend with a new version of Aguero – one that still threatens goals but also comes packaged with a streak that can render him sidelined.

While we were perhaps willing to walk a tightrope for a 9.5 Costa, once again, we have to re-assess Aguero in the light of his price tag.

If Sanchez, Kane, Costa and Hazard can deliver over the festive period while the Argentine sits in the stands, it’s difficult to imagine many rushing back to re-install the City striker.

Typically, the fixture list smiles kindly on Pep Guardiola’s men on Aguero’s return from contention.

Clearly, the temptation will be great and, with winter Wildcards in play, we are likely to see a huge split in the Fantasy Premier League community.

Aguero was designed to be a fire and forget option. A one-stop signing and captaincy candidate, only to be replaced when the hamstrings gave way.

We could not have foreseen the events so far this season or the fact that Aguero would influence our campaigns not with his points, but by serving us uncertainty and dilemmas at regular intervals.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Sanchez has 7 shots in the box, 6 on target in total and 5 goals over the last 4 gws. Considering one of these was clearly offside and he has benefitted from some shall we say dubious goalkeeping is he really as essential as people are making out or has he been over achieving?

His shots in the box stats are on a par with lamella, can and tadic. He does have impressive creativity numbers but I don't think you spend that kind of money on an assist machine.

My take is he has been rather fortunate to get the returns he has and he is far from essential. Any thoughts?

Ps Walcott has only three less shots in the box than sanchez over the same period and it looks like he is really suffering while bellerin is out as he is putting more of a shift in defensively.

There are obvious errors in just looking at the stats, though. Vs West Ham Sanchez was clean through but squred a pass for an easy tap in, and later Walcott could have squared for an easy tap in but chose instead to shank it wide. Walcott wins as far as stats are concerned because he had a shot in the box, but that doesn't mean he's been the player more on form.

I agree pasq, I'm not trying to compare one to the other at all. I just think 5 goals from you shots on target is just ridiculous conversion rate and considering one was clearly offside are we getting carried away by outcomes rather than looking at what he is likely to achieve over the next 4 gws?

It is not that long ago since he went 6 gws only scoring in one of them and with those kind of stats I can see why.

I'd say you have to hit the streaks when you can. Kane's got terrific accuracy stats, but half (at least) of his recent goals have been penalties, so it's hardly surprising. Costa's shots on target are on a par with Sanchez's. There's more to it than the stats. The eye test shows Sanchez and Costa in brilliant form, and Kane well on the way.

Again hard to argue he is in form pasq but a more realistic output from those stats would be 2 goals not 5 as 40% conversion of shots on target is more of a normal rate. If he had got 2 goals would people be ripping their teams up to get him in?

I'm not saying he is a bad option, far from it. I'm just saying I don't think he is as essential as people are making out after two lucky gws.

Again that was more to do with his lack of quality as a player meaning he couldn't keep it up. Sanchez is clearly quality and will end up with 18+ goals this season imo. Will that be enough to make him essential? No I don't think so.

Sanchez is good, but he is not three times as good as Messi. That's what the sustainability of his conversion rate is about.

True sink but the 5 goals from 6 shots on target is unsustainable no matter who you are playing. He did the same trick at Sunderland a while back with 3 shots 2 on target 2 goals. He is a good finisher but not that good. Nobody is that good

Sanchez is a wonderful player capable of wonderful goals. Arsenal did not play that well in November - honestly, I think their West Ham and Basel performances were a cut above what they've managed for a long time. I expect that improvement to continue, and I think we will see far better underlying stats from Sanchez over the next few GWs.

He needs to be in your team, because he is a great finisher. He will score more goals than Hazard, comfortably, and every other midfielder on the game. That was case before the weekend and it is still the case after. He is explosive and a form player, and assists will keep him ticking over when he is not scoring. His points were great in the previous two seasons and this time he is playing consistently through the centre. Without injury, he will comfortably break the 20 goal mark, and without injury he will end up as the highest point scorer in the game.

Interesting and compelling argument but why would I not feel comfortable captaining him then? If as you say his stats rise to more like kane/kun/Ibrahimovic levels with circa 5-6 shots per game (which would be double his recent output) then I'd agree with you. Until he does I'm afraid I can't.

I'll go back to his 5 blanks in 6 gws just before this hot spell. Those stats are just not good enough to sustain this kind of returns.

He's blanked 4 out of the last 10, 2 of which were Utd and Spurs.

That's while dealing with the exertions of European games too.

He is a good finisher, alright, not really exceptional, but good or very good, but there's no way on earth that he keeps up a 71% conversion rate on all shots and 83% on shots on target.

And let's not get too "politically correct" about this: Arsenal have been absolutely fecking awful. And if there is a turn to better, and not just two matches against opponents who just can't play atm, then Sanchez's shot numbers may take a turn to better too. But the court's still out, the opponents were weak and literally gifted Arsenal those chances, so I wouldn't just expect that things take a turn to better now.

Ps just to back up these stats I had a look at goal conversion from non panalty shots in the box this season.

                Kun 14%
                Costa 25%
                Defoe 20%
                Kane 27%

                SANCHEZ 37%!!!!!

I agree Sanchez is class but I wouldn't have said he is a natural finisher luke these guys and even then I'd say Costa, kane and defoe are overachieving to a certain extent.

Well, I've had him in since he was 10.9 but he's playing as a forward, so you have to think of his price tag as if he were a striker.

Not much difference between him and Kane/Costa and costs MUCH less than Aguero. Everyone says Aguero is essential, but Alexis costs less, has more points, is more consistent and is deployable in a midfield position in FPL rather than a striker and is apparently not essential? Sounds like bitterness/bias to me.

Before his recent lucky/form spell (I say lucky as he wasn't converting at these rates before the last two gws ever in his career) he had 6 goals in 12 appearances which you would probably expect from him based on his recent stats.

His points per game over this period was 6ppg so say 34 games he gets 204pts for the season. Sorry that is not enough for his price imo.

He is the most expensive because he will score the most goals.

If you had a Costa, Kane, Ibra strikeforce I could understand going without Sanchez even though the likes of Defoe could easily keep up with Zlatan

He is most expensive as it was predicted he would get the most points of all midfielders. I'm not saying he won't score goals his that I don't think he is essential as the money saved can be used to buy other players that will match his price. Two lucky gws shouldn't be enough for everyone to kneejerk.

Does nobody look at the 12 preceding gws? 6ppg is not enough or just about enough to justify his price tag but certainly not outside the realms of possibility of other big hitters matching it.

But he's the highest scoring player in the game Dino with a large ownership.

I don't know about you but I have the highest scorer in the game in my team regardless of price.

This is not Capoue level of flukiness. This is a player with an excellent past history and an average of (I think) nearly 1 goal in every two games for Arsenal from the wing.

I understand he is expensive but he is the highest scorer - surely he should be priority

Tbf he is one of the priority players of course but I just don't think he is essential. Put him on pens and I think that changes but to me hazard is more essential due to his pens and predictability.

Congrats on the points it's nice when you get them like that but for example kane's numbers much better this gw and he didn't get those points. Luck does play a part too

I listened to the West Ham match on the radio and Sanchez was involved in every attack and a constant threat throughout, whereas Walcott was pretty anonymous for long periods of the game.

Sanchez won't get 23 points every week, but he has already had six double-figure hauls, and his PPG of 7.9 is well ahead of all other players (currently his closest challengers are Costa with 7.1, Hazard with 6.9 and Kane with 6.7).

He also had an outstanding record in his previous 2 seasons in the Premier League - 207 points at 5.7ppg with 9 double digit hauls in 2014-15 and 167 points at 5.6ppg with 5 double digit hauls in 2015-16. These are stats that cannot be ignored, and if he reverts to the norm then his norm is exceptionally high.

In 2015-16 he went through a spell of 10 games without scoring, and this season he had a poor spell lasting 4 games, but when he is on a hot streak as at present it is extremely unwise not to have him in your squad.

I watched the Sanchez wonder show from start to finish on the telly.

The stuff in this OP about lucky points is ridiculous.

And a comparison on underlying stats of Sanchez v Walcott for West Ham is pointless because Walcott was frigging brutal.

Next season we could be looking at Sanchez as a striker with a crazy price possibly the biggest in the game but definitely close to Aguero territory.

West ham are a mess probably not wise to base your predictions on what you saw in that game. Even though one of the goals was offside and two were gk mistakes imo. All he can do is put the ball in the net though so fair play to him for taking advantage.

                  Lol. This is wonderful stuff.

So don't base it on the west ham game, and don't base it on current form/points?

If you don't think he's worth the money that's fine, but stats saying he's lucky? Please.

Look, I don't know what is with the defensive/aggressive tone of your post you are welcome to have a different opinion ofc but I am not the only one that looks at stats to try and see if a player can maintain output.

You don't think getting a goal from a blatant offside is fortunate? And that is beside his ridiculous conversion rate recently?

                    1. Still Unsure
                        7 years, 4 months ago

                        Not aggressive at all.

Looking at stats is fine, and yeah an offside goal is fortunate, but sometimes you just have to see a player and realise he's in great form, and when players are in great form, they do tend to get breaks going their way.

Is he essential for the whole season? No, (but then I'd say no-one is).
But right now, on this form, IMO whether or not he's justifying his price tag is irrelevant as he's scoring the most points.

Fair enough, reasonable logic and if you think it is worth the surgery to fit him in for his hot streak then fair enough. I agree players in "form" will do better than normal conversion wise but does this make them essential?

Ps for future reference when you start a post with lol which is totally dismissive of someone else's point of view it can come off as defensive/insecure/aggressive, no hard feelings though.

This is probably the most sensible response imo. If you accept he has hot spells and he is likely to revert to closer to the 6ppg he had for the first 12 gws you then have to ask is it worth ripping your squad to pieces to fit him in? Is he worth 11.5m for 6ppg?

                Is he essential? No imo

In 2014-15 he got 141 points in his first 20 games (7.1ppg) and 66 in the remaining 15 (4.4ppg).

                  In 2015-16 he got 17 points in his first 6 games (2.8ppg), 46 in his next 3 (15.3ppg), 24 in his next 10 (2.4ppg), 63 in his next 7 (9.0ppg), and 17 in his last 4 (4.3ppg).

His scores this season have been 2-3-16-1-10-14-3-5-3-13-2-1-14-23.

Sell him during his barren streaks if you must, but once he starts a hot streak he is pretty essential. And, although he does not score nearly every match like Costa, he has not yet had a prolonged barren streak so far this season.

Excellent post again RL. My problem is his price and as per my response to your last post he requires major surgery to take in and out of your team. I just think the evidence is there currently to say he is essential.

Spurs CF 11.1m, Chelsea CF 10.8m, United CF 11.2m, Arsenal CF 11.6m. That doesn't seem so far our of kilter when you consider that he's getting 1 point extra per goal and a point for a CS, which the others aren't.

People love to obsess over the last 4 weeks stats. They barely interest me. I don't need stats to tell me about Sanchez' potential or value.

Fair enough Ruth, the one thing he hasn't got is pens though.

He is probably close to being on a par with some of the options you mentioned imo when you take account of the extra point for goals and cs but they can't all be essential.

Sure, none of them are essential until Captain Hindsight arrives.

Of the 4 it's Costa I'm most happy to leave out. He doesn't have pens either of course.

I think kun is as close to an essential player as we have currently and he is priced at a point that makes even him not essential imo.

"My take is he has been rather fortunate to get the returns he has and he is far from essential. Any thoughts?"

At the moment he is the highest scoring player in the game. Playing OOP, and for a side that has great attacking qualities. When watching arsenal games he truly is a standout in most matches- serving great balls (25 throughballs, almost twice the amount of the second place in the league) and finishing them ( 11 goals tied with costa).

Looking purely at numbers ,its easy to confuse luck for quality. For me, he is easily one of the best picks at the moment.

Hey Dino. You should google the Internet Archive Wayback Machine and look up DBRonaldo on FFS.

Now, there was a man that could fight off 17 different posters at once, a bit like a doomed gladiator in the Coliseum. You didn't manage that this time, I'm afraid.

Stats, schmats. Sanchez is unbelievable. That 3rd goal... when you have him in your FPL team and he scores a goal like that makes all peripheral talk completely redundant and makes playing this game what it should be.. nirvana..

he's just had his chadli v west ham/hazard v everton game where every shot goes in and every key pass turns into an assist. sanchez with confidence and a cf spot though looks most likely to get close to that once a season score

overachieving yes. he always seems to be a 2,2,2,16,14,10,2,2,2 type of player so no doubt the big scores are overachieving, just as the 2s are waiting for an explosion.

i assumed giroud would wiggle his way back in and hurt him but that injury has set any chances of that back another month surely. with giroud out the picture and aguero now out the picture too it seems hard to justify not having sanchez even if stoke have only conceded 5 goals in their last 9 games (massively worth monitoring the martins-indi injury).

stekelenberg falsely made hazard look like he had to be rushed in, now i think a perfect storm in the last 2 gw has made sanchez look likewise (there was the bournemouth defender playing him in 2 gw ago, then west ham going to old trafford a few days before last gw and getting the runaround, losing key players such as kouyate in the process, etc etc etc).

It really is, especially when all you are doing is looking at cold hard numbers.

A lot of people play this game with huge emotional investment though so I get it.

I take issue with the selective nature of this post. Those sort of averages are taken over a large sample size. Naturally players have short spells where they overachieve their average and under achieve their average. What Sanchez has done is completely normal, its a reflection of his current form where you would expect to overachieve on your average.

Put a half decent keeper in front of him and he has 10 points less the previous GW.

Same as with Kun vs Burnley when Heaton was out and Firminio last season vs CP.

                    Luck. People underestimate it.

The headline nails the baffling nature of this whole line of thinking. In a game in which 10 points is an achievement to be celebrated, and 20 points is a once in a season achievement, then Yes, 23 points must be considered an overachievement, as should 10 PPG over his last four matches.

So it is quite likely that getting him in now will mean that a new owner will be catching him on a downward trajectory where he returns to a more normal level of achievement.

But that misses the point -- the perfect time to get him in was before gw13, as hindsight tells us, or even before gw1, as the FPL Total Score tab tells us with him at the top of the list.

So because an owner can't get Sanchez in at the perfect time does that mean the owner shouldn't get him in at all?

I guess the question I was trying to pose was whether he was essential as people seem to be making out.

This season he had 43 shots total and a good to top player (kun for example) who takes a lot of shots outside the area will have circa 15% conversion of non penalty shots. This would put him on approx 6 -7 goals for the season. I don't think he has over achieved for just the last for gws but the last two gws in particular have pushed him well into the overachieving for the season realms.

Will he keep it up? Who knows, look what Mahrez and vardy did last season. The key thing is his price, even if he hit 20% conversion for the season he could be matched by two players that cost the same as him and a cheaper player.

Thanks for the reply, good on you for sticking around and fielding so many of the responses. I see what you are saying in that he is exceeding expectations, and if he produces more in line with the expectations than the unsustainable conversion rates than his price will be high. We'd certainly like to get a player in closer to his ceiling than his floor.

However, you have to take into consideration his ceiling as well as his floor when judging his price. His stats give a floor of 6 PPG as you say, but his ceiling is sublime as we are witnessing right now. A midfield full of the ubers of the month like Phillips, Zaha, etc. could certainly be the most cost effective and match Sanchez' floor, but who can match his ceiling? Not just 23 points, but multiple purple patches when he is rampant and a world class forward?

Your concern is with people using the word essential when stats are being disregarded and don't justify the tag, my concern (and some of the others in this thread) is that a false narrative might be emerging in which stats are being used to justify missing a haul. FPL points are the measure of success, xG and other stats are a tool to find those points, they are not success themselves.

Cheers, though, for sparking some conversation.

I do see all your points and see the merit in them and I don't doubt he will score very well this season but will even being top scorer justify his price?

You seem to think his floor is 6ppg but I think his ceiling based on his stats so far this season is around 6.5ppg. Every big hitter in the game has a ceiling over a short period which is going to be much higher than their long term average. Before sanchez it was hazard who was essential, before that it was, coutinho, firmino, kdb before that it was Ibra.

We can't just jump on every big hitter that his form based on unsustainable stats and label them essential.

I am by nature a critical thinker and always challenge perceived wisdom so maybe I'm wrong here (I did call Leicester wrong last season) but I don't think challenging this sanchez essential narrative is a bad call.

I've had him a while, but looking at the crazy run of fixtures coming up (from GW18), I think he'll be an absolute must, and the rapidly rising price has made it a now or never thing for a lot of people.

I'm with you on this. I had the Alexis Theo double About 7 gws ago and decided to sell Alexis because he didn't look like an elite finisher and scuffed quite a few chances. Wally actually looked more dangerous in those games. He's suffered massively once Bellerin got injured. Stats back this up.

I don't have Alexis and still don't as i see this as a probable chance to catch up. Stoke, Everton and Man City are decent defensive sides and i'm taking my chance (one game at a time though. I won't be stubborn about it). Lots of goalscorers in the game.

It's not exactly sensational that the player who has taken the most FPL points this season has over-performed. It's essentially down to Sanchez having converted 38.5 % of his shots inside the box this season, versus a career average of 21.5 %. He has a (non-penalty) goal or assist 1.15 times per 90 minutes this year, significantly better than his career average of 0.74. That career average is in itself rather sensational though, averaging 0.47 goals per 90 minutes.

Nobody is questioning Costa though. He has 1.17 (non-penalty) goals+assists per 90 minutes this year, while in his career he has averaged 0.71 (less than the midfielder Sanchez). In particular he has scored goals outside the box at 10 times the average rate of his career. He has also over-performed in the assist department, with his chances created being converted at a 60 % higher rate than throughout his career.

I expect regression towards the mean for both. Still, the numbers clearly bear out the goal and assist threat from Sanchez, and though he is not on penalties, he is probably the midfielder in the league with the biggest goal threat overall.

Excellent stats and post overall Syntese. I actually do question Costa and don't have him for the very reasons you mention. If you see above there was some small conversation regarding Costa, Kane, Kun, Ibra etc regarding there stats too.

I put the latest burst down to serendipity as much as anything. As ab says above everything just fell for him right down to the offside decision going his way and the Bournemouth goalkeeper being injured the day Arsenal played them.

6m+ for a CB is way too much. I'd rather have Alonso who's playing in midfield for a better side.

LADS, really need some help here.

                    2.0 ITB and for -4:

                    A) Fuchs -> Alonso (means I won't lose value on Fuchs and I'd have a good back line BUT I'd have to start Allen/Diomande )

                    or

                    B) Diomande -> Iheanacho (means I can play 3 up front and demote Allen to the bench BUT Fuchs is gonna drop and I'd have to start him in my back line despite them playing City)

In situations like this I try to take the price drop out of the question. Imagine you woke up tomorrow morning and Fuchs has dropped in price - do you still swap him out for the -4? If yes, then there's no reason why you shouldn't do it now. If no, then you may as well wait for the next GW.

Sort out dimande and Allen later imo. Fuchs -> Alonso will get you better team value, and probably more point

Preferred option for a draft league chaps?

                    A) Mkhitaryan and Anichebe

                        Heaton
                        Alonso//Smith//Lovren
                        Mata//Alli//Hazard(C)//Sigurdsson
                        Ibra//Kane//Iheanacho

1.2 in the bank - did Rashford to Iheanacho.

Fact of the matter is I jumped from 1.1m to 600K this week and because I've had such a rubbish season to date I'm willing to risk it for a biscuit.

Stoke are very solid right now and Everton/City not easy fixtures.

I know I'm swimming against the tide but what can you do.

Fair enough, your team. I'd make a plan to get Sanchez in soon though, Mata isn't a great pick imo.
