Fantasy Eliteserien – Gameweek 3 Preview

After a five month long winter break the new season of Norwegian’s top flight football kicked off with a bang with two Gameweeks within a few days.

With Gameweek 3 starting on Saturday there is little respite for the clubs, and more importantly, us Fantasy managers. Gameweek 2 saw a lot of frustration as key assets were either benched or taken off early with the tight schedule in mind.

FFScout League Standings

The FFS community has shown an overwhelming interest for this fringe league, with 476 already having entered the FFScout main league (3769-1041).

On top with 135 points we find Norwegian Red (Oieiao) – perhaps fittingly – an Englishman.

In the FFScout  H2H league 16 managers have won both their matchups, with Ned Ryerson and Riski Virksomhet being joint top thanks to their superior points tally. Ned Ryerson features again on top of Phil Dagger’s Last Man Standing.

Stock Check

Ahead of looking at the risers and fallers from the two Gameweeks so far it is worth checking out Goktugerce‘s excellent statistical review of the first two Gameweeks, looking at team statistics, average positions and expected goals & assists. Meanwhile, Niemi took an in depth look at the good and bad players so far in every position.

Rising

Vegar Hedenstad (6.5) – Two clean sheets and an assist. On some set pieces.

Mike Jensen (10.5) – Two assists. Easy on the eye, which means he will be a favourite of ‘the man in the stand’. Already has 4 bonus points.

Milan Jevtovic (7.6) – A goal and an assist. A possible injury to Elbasan Rashani means Jevtovic could be nailed on going forward.

Nicklas Bendtner (12.5) – Two goals. The Dane is yet to find the groove but nonetheless has managed to find the back of the net in both games. Will score a lot of goals purely because of the sheer amount of chances Rosenborg create every game.

Sigurd Rosted (5.6) – Two goals. Not only is he a massive threat from set pieces, Sarpsborg play 4 out of their next 6 fixtures at home. Last season they kept an impressive 9 clean sheets in 15 games at home.

Patrick Mortensen (6.6) – Two goals and an assist. Sarpsborg have scored the joint most goals so far and the fixtures are favourable.

Gilbert Koomson (7.5) – Dubbed ’Siggy of Eliteserien’ by some of the FFS posters, Koomson showed some of his potential by scoring a penalty in GW2. The top assister from last season is yet to assist this campaign but that looks like a matter of time.

Bendik Bye (5.5) – Two goals and an assist. After a potential season ending injury for strike parter Ole Sveen, Bye should have done enough to nail down a permanent starting place.

Ifeanyi Matthew (6.1) – A goal and an assist. 4 bonus points already, including full points in a game his team lost.

Ibrahim Shuaibu (5.0) – Two goals and two assists. Incredible form and value.

Frederik Gytkjær (7.5) – Three goals. Mistaken for his brother who was the league’s top scorer last season, a lot of casuals have enjoyed the early investment of the younger Gytkjær.

Ohi Omoijuanfo (7.0) – Hat-trick in the first home game. 3 of the next 4 fixtures are at home.

Marco Tagbajumi (7.6) – Two goals. Going somewhat under the radar compared to his expensive strike partner Marcus Pedersen. Favourable fixtures.

Jylian Ryerson (4.5) – One goal. Listed as a cheap defender, Ryerson has played both games in an advanced midfield position. Will probably drop a bit deeper once Adegbenro is back. Ryerson is a jack of all trades and due to Viking’s extremely thin squad we could hope to see him OOP for longer parts of the season.

Falling

Ghayas Zahid (10.5) – Tipped by many to be in contention for player of the year, Zahid has nothing to show for so far. Consistent returns are vital for players with a premium price tag. Does however face the bottom team at home in GW3 so those patient enough to keep could finally be rewarded.

Mohammed Abdellaoue (9.4) – An impressive pre season was followed by an anonymous opening GW before being ruled out for GW2 with an injury. Is very injury prone.

Lars Vilsvik (6.0) – Viewed as a full back with big attacking threat, the only thing Vilsvik has produced so far is an own goal. The fixtures are however still good.

Rafik Zekhnini (8.5) & Fredrik Nordkvelle (9.0) – Although the former registered an assist after coming on as a sub, he was benched due poor work ethic in the previous match. The latter is yet to return attacking points.

Samuel Adegbenro (7.5) – After missing the first game through illness, Adegbenro returned to training ahead of GW2. But he missed the second game as well, and now await four of the toughest games Viking will play all season.

Gameweek 3 Picks

Scoring the winner in his debut game, Bård Finne (9.1) will look to continue his good home form when Vålerenga welcome the bottom team Sandefjord. With Abdellaoue being a doubt for Sunday, Finne might benefit from a central striker role.

When it comes to attempts, midfielder Ifeanyi Matthew (6.1) is second only to Bendik Bye with 4 shots per game. The Nigerian will certainly fancy his chances at home against what currently is the joint worst defence in the league.

Marco Tagbajuni (7.6) is on top for average xG (expected goals) per shot. Although a small sample size, this suggests he has so far been on the right place at the right time. Up against a shambolic Aalesund defence, the rather budget friendly striker could potentially even be trusted with the armband.

It's interesting to see Kind Mikalsen pushed out to LB again (his best role) and Kippe back as CB for Lillestrøm. Kind Mikalsen scored 4 goals and 3 assist last season as a left back. Scored an overhead kick last GW in his first match as a LB for the season. If Lillestrøm actually look like they can keep a CS again, I might get him on my WC.

Våge Nilsen OOP as a CM and Riski OOP as a ST.

Haha, similar stats for sure. Meling had 4 goals and 3 assists for Stabæk last year as well. This year he's at Rosenborg, could see good returns there. Only worry is they have another decent left back as well.

I'm playing this as a semi-casual... Not been going too well, but I have been tapping into some of that classic casual luck 🙂 F.e. Played Dyngeland this week as I never got around to getting rid of Fernandes. That being said, think its time to wildcard. Something went wrong, and I'm feeling vulnerable in terms of Rosenberg cover

    Dyngeland Fernandes
    Hedenstad Ruud Vilsvik Ryerson Moe
    Svendsen Midtsjo Adegbenro Trondsen Njie
    Sigurdarson Omo Shuaibu

    5.3 ITB

What to do? No matter what I transfer, nobody produces 🙁 . Not going to get every week saved by Dyngeland after all.

Odd at home seem quite good so not sure about Vilsvik. With 1FT I'd maybe transfer Ruud but not sure who to.

(But I have other things to fix really - Helland, Shuaibu - & he hasn't been that bad compared to my other defenders, and fixtures ok).

What do you guys think should be a good aim for overall rank at the end of the season? I'm aiming for top 500. That's like top 30k in FPL. If you want top 10k, then you should be in top 175 in Eliteserien.

Wonder if there might be a higher percentage of active players in eliteserien? I.e. People signing up because they are into fantasy football rather than loads of PL fans signing up to FPL for leagues with mates etc. then forgetting about it after a couple of weeks ? Just speculation ...

Aiming to win the Finland league. Currently 5th at 305p, 1st at 339p. Not really too fussed about OR, just trying to have fun, which is not always easy with such low averages every week.

Just seen that 7.5% of teams in the top 10k are Norwegian, so I guess Norwegians have a thing for fantasy football. I guess there are fewer casuals in Eliteserien Fantasy in % compared to FPL.

3 red flags for next gameweek (Fernandes, Ruud, Jevtovic). Not keen on shipping either outfield player but I run a risk of playing with 10 men, who would you ship?

I guess you could argue that he made the right decision doing a "Suarez", but still it's a bit odd. 🙂 Haven't seen many games so it's hard to argue too much with the bonus given so far, but just based on results it looks mostly ok. In GW1 it seemed like for some of these experts that as long as you played play well for the first 60 minutes, it didn't matter what happened in the last 30. Abdi got bonus after his red card cost his team the game and Odd defender picked up bonus in a 3-0 loss. Maybe this was something that was addressed after GW1 because it hasn't happened after that.

Didn't see the game, but apparently he were outstanding until he got sent off and you could argue he actually saved them a point by getting sent off.

Really having a hard time deciding which strikers to get. We could use an extra spot!

Ohi is the top scorer, most owned player and likely to score. I simply can't go without him.

Sigurdarson is my personal favourite. Pretty much in form and plays for one of the best teams.

Mos is so consistent. Scoring pretty much every game. Doesn't play for the most exciting team, but he's such a clinical finisher.

Sarpsborg are one of the most attacking, in-form teams right now. Mortensen is the best goal scorer, but Lindberg has been outshining him lately. Mortensen is a more clinical finisher and gets more chances, but Lindberg has been quite unlucky not to score himself. Add to that his great assist potential. Takes loads of corners and free kicks, and I believe he's on penalties. At 5.5 he's outstanding value and free up way more fund than the others.

I'm currently on Ohi, Sigurdarson and Lindberg, but feels wrong leaving Mos out. Any input?

I hate comparing Eliteserien to Premier League, but Sarpsborg for fantasy purposes seem like Man.City without an Agüero choice, it's just impossible to pick out who will grab points in a good full sack of options.... for this reason alone I'd advocate Mos as your third choice.

I went with Sigurdarson (+ Ohi/Mortensen). Mostly on stats basis - more shots per game (six yard box/penalty area), more key passes. And just looks good. But as you say Mos is more consistent, and probably has better fixtures although this league's not so predictable.

Ohi and Sigurdarson are both expendable for me.

Sigurdarson because he is injury prone in a very intensive schedule, while also facing Brann and Odd away. Sogndal at home is a sweet game in GW9, but it's 16th of May. Every top team have a nice home game that round.

Ohi looks solid himself. No competiton. Top scorer. No injury history. His underlying stats are great. The fixtures are dreadful though, and you have to ask if a relatively easy schedule is the main reason he has looked far and away the best option.

Mos to me is the safest choice out of anyone right now. He has scored in the most games out of any player in the league. He ended the previous season well. He shouldn't have any competition for his spot. No injury history. His statistics aren't at the level of Sigurdarson and Ohi, but he is a renowned poacher. The fixtures are good, and AaFK are looking better for every game.

That's true. I won't drop Ohi though as he looks solid AND has high ownerships, especially among those at the top. If he continue to score I'll get further behind. Maybe I'm boring, but I don't think I'm willing to go without him right now.

Fair points on Sigurdarson, but I won't drop him because he's injury prone. He's the best striker in Eliteserien for me right now and I'm not dropping him on my WC.

So it's Mos vs. Mortensen vs. Lindberg for me. Mos seems like the best choice, but it comes down to value I think. Not an easy decision.

Have the exact same struggle myself. A front three of Ohi, Mortensen and Sigurdarson looks great, but left me with zero returns this weekend. Of course, considered getting Mos, but Molde's statistical derby dominance convinced me not to. Oh, well.

Regarding funds: Is it just me, or is money not really the issue when it comes to Eliteserien Fantasy? I mean, the big hitters don't live up to their price tag (Haugen, Svendsen and Sigurdarson are closest), but let's face it – no player worth 10m or more is essential. At least for now.

I find it extremely hard to pick consistent players – maybe because they are fewer and further between in Norwegian football, at least when it comes to fantasy returns. Value picks have outscored the big hitters, but how long will it continue?

A couple of weeks on the sidelines... GW9 is kindof a big deal in Norway, and especially for Rosenborg, so they are hoping to make that or the aniversary game in GW10... keep an eye on GW10 btw, Rosenborg will have an intense desire to completely dominate that game...

It's connected to the 17th, sure, but the 16th of may round has a status in Norwegian football as the big festive football round.
Think status kindof like boxing-day in PL. Common for most 16th of May rounds is usually that the big teams with large stadiums get home-games and usually fill up, with the added effect following, that the opposision is usually of a very beatable sort.
It is an intregal "head-start" to our national day celebration the day after.

Of those, Midtsjø.... Jevtovic still has one more game ban from his red card, and won't be ready until GW9.

Note that also Rashani is expected back around GW9 or GW10, makes the winger-choice very open again in Rosenborg with 3 out of 4 coming back from injury and ban at the same time.

Tempted to get an FPL style of team and pump my money into the starting XI with a weak bench.

                  Leceijewski
                  Rolantsson - Reginiussen - Seck - Moe - Steiring
                  Zahid - Haugen - Midtsjø - Svendsen - Sødlund
                  Sigurdarson - Mos - Omoijuanfo

Sødlund bench fodder, with Seck/Moe rtating every week with Steiring maybe starting every now and then. Always a home game except in GW9. Steiring should be nailed now after all the injuries at Sogndal, but won't expect clean sheets from him. Moe and Seck good attacking potential from in-form teams.

I'm not sure. He's cheaper and racking up bonus points. Playing very well. Hedenstad doesn't take that many set pieces with Helland on the pitch, but he's probably take quite a few corners etc. now when Helland is injured. I'm not sure who's the better pick, but I don't think you can go wrong with either at the moment.

Now that we know how this league works 🙂 and we have a little bit experience I would like to start another H2H-league. It starts with GW 9 and is limited to 12 teams so that every team plays twice against each other.
